To be fair to this book, I really should have read a description of this book before I started it。 This is because I expected this book to be about gender identity in young children (based on the title of the book) and I was excited to read a story about this, but this book has nothing to do with gender identity and as such, I was a little disappointed because it wasn't what I expected。But I will start with what I did like about this book。 So the plot of this book was exploring how young childre To be fair to this book, I really should have read a description of this book before I started it。 This is because I expected this book to be about gender identity in young children (based on the title of the book) and I was excited to read a story about this, but this book has nothing to do with gender identity and as such, I was a little disappointed because it wasn't what I expected。But I will start with what I did like about this book。 So the plot of this book was exploring how young children's behaviour is related to their emotional/psychological wellbeing。 The main character is a young boy who is always classed as the 'naughty child by teachers and other adults, but through his inner dialogue, you see he is a very anxious child and that is what causes his 'naughty behaviour and how he is perceived by peers。 So firstly this book is written for children/young teens and as such, I believe the plot of the book would be a good starting point to have a conversation with children about wellbeing and mental health。 Being that we live in a world where we are starting to realise the importance of mental health and how issues can start arising in young children this book can be used in educational ways to help children and young people understand more about this。 Furthermore, with the target audience being young people, I feel the writing style, dialogue and chapter lengths are all appropriate for this age group and could be an easy read for young people being that it isn't too long。Moving onto the aspects of the book that wasn't personally for me。 Firstly, as mentioned I was disappointed in the fact the plot wasn't about gender identity (but as mentioned maybe I should have read a description of the book first then I wouldn't have been disappointed)。 Secondly, I didn't like how the therapist character was written。 Now I will say I am a psychology student and have a big passion for mental health so maybe others will think I am a bit harsh on her character。 But I personally felt that it gave a bad idea of therapists。 She made some questionable decisions such as kissing the main character on the cheek when she was proud of him, which would be considered unethical in real life。 Additionally, at the end of the book, she becomes a primary school teacher, now these are two very different professions that require different education and training so it kind of irked me that this happened and didn't see the point of this。 When she left the school she was working at why didn't she just start a new therapist job, why did she change professions she wasn't trained for, it just made no sense to me。 Lastly, I felt like some things were brought up in the plot and then never explored again and were neglected。 Now to be fair this is a children's book so it wasn't going to explore loads of issues within one book, but personally, I would have liked a bit more exploration of these。Overall, I think for children/young teenagers, this book could be a great starting point for understanding the connection between emotional and mental wellbeing on our actions。 But this book is that just a starting point and so maybe boring and disappointing to older readers。 I don't think I will reread this book myself again but will appreciate the conversation it is trying to have。 。。。more

Not what I expected but beautifully crafted。 Bradley is a unhappy, lost little soul who doesn’t quite fit in。 Unlike the new boy Jeff who everyone instantly likes。 The school counsellor Carla Davis helps Bradley make sense of his world with kindness and patience and helps him realise that even though he’s different he can still belong。 Wonderfully poignant story about friendship and love。

چقدر قشنگ بودچقدر دوست‌داشتنیهیچ وقت کارلا رو از یاد نمی‌برم و فکر نمی‌کنم به این زودی شخصیتی رو پیدا کنم که اینقدر دل‌نشین باشه

Love life and it’ll love u back

I love this book so much and totally suggest to 9 yrs + although it does take a while to get stuck into it 。 Even though Bradly can be mean, hurtful and unkind he also can be EXTREMELY kind and is just misunderstood。

4。5 stars rounded up。Written for a reader that is much younger than me, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would。 That’s not because it’s a children’s book, there are many children’s books that I really enjoy, but more because of the subject matter。 I got hold of this one after noticing that it was another by Sachar, after enjoying Holes (which I also read for the first time as an adult), without really looking at the blurb and I wasn’t quite fancying reading a book about a bully in school 4。5 stars rounded up。Written for a reader that is much younger than me, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would。 That’s not because it’s a children’s book, there are many children’s books that I really enjoy, but more because of the subject matter。 I got hold of this one after noticing that it was another by Sachar, after enjoying Holes (which I also read for the first time as an adult), without really looking at the blurb and I wasn’t quite fancying reading a book about a bully in school。My main qualm with books of this theme is that I often feel that in trying to understand the bullies, with the notion that “there is an underlying issue”, there is often a disproportionate emotional line to the victims (my most recent experience of this being Onjali Rauf’s The Night Bus Hero)。 That was absolutely not the case here, I really liked that part of Bradley’s transformation not only involved finding himself but also recognising that he wasn’t always very nice to his friends, and the way that all the characters were written was actually quite mature。 I liked that they were kids – there were a fair share of tantrums – but the underlying writing tone was very neutral and that this was truly a story centred on learning to get along。 The ending made me cry, initially (view spoiler)[ at the party when Bradley’s gift was revealed, and then when Carla had left the book and a letter for Bradley。 I thought it showed how far he’d come even in the space of 200 pages when he not only wrote back but also included a toy that meant a lot to him as a gift (hide spoiler)]。 I thought the use of the bathroom scenes was a cute way to lighten up the atmosphere, and felt like a pressure release valve – every time the story got to a bit of a dark area, there was a bathroom scene to make me laugh again – and Sachar used it very effectively。This book, after Holes, really demonstrates what an amazing author he is! The language is obviously simpler to cater for a younger audience, but I thought there was enough depth to also engage adults。 The only thing I wish was for there to have been (view spoiler)[ a couple of chapters about Bradley’s backstory – how he got to being the outcast in the first place i。e。 where the book starts。 I had expected this to be eventually told in a flashback or similar, but it never came。 It’s alluded to that his father’s injury had something to do with it i。e。 the lack of punishment by the person who ruined his father’s career, but it could have been better expanded upon (hide spoiler)]。 。。。more

What the consistently supportive and enthusiastic reviews do not say is how well written this is。 The language is consistently at the right register for the story and its readers。 Sachar wastes no words and speaks clearly on complex issues without risk of misinterpretation, getting to the factual and emotional core without melodrama。

I read this book back when I was in primary school and recently dug it out of my old book collection so I decided to reread it for nostalgia purposes。 Reading this book now reminded me how much I loved it。 It has character growth, funny moments and very likeable characters。 It tackles helping a boy with behavioural problems become a better person and also shows the benefits for using counsellors to help children when they need。 Overall I really enjoyed this black from the past!

I truly believe that not only young kids and students need to read this book but all teachers and parents also do need to read it。 absolutely one of the best books ever。

This is a fun book about how much positive influence a good school counselor can have on students and families。 I like how it also shows how parents, though well-meaning, can be misguided in their efforts。
