Summary

A teen girl disappears from her small town deep in the bayou, where magic festers beneath the surface of the swamp like water rot, in this chilling debut supernatural thriller for fans of Natasha Preston, Karen McManus, and Rory Power。

La Cachette, Louisiana, is the worst place to be if you have something to hide。

This tiny town, where seventeen-year-old Grey spends her summers, is the self-proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World--and the place where Elora Pellerin, Grey's best friend, disappeared six months earlier。

Grey can't believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened。 But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something - her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave。

When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou - a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town's bloody history - Grey realizes that La Cachette's past is far more present and dangerous than she'd ever understood。 Suddenly, she doesn't know who she can trust。 In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent--and La Cachette's dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart。

A nice book。 The Mysterious element was maintained but the book did not need to be this long。 I liked the magical mystic element。 The relationship between two soul sisters was beautiful。

I am a sucker for a supernatural book based in the Bayou。 It has been a very long time since I stayed up all night to finish a book。 But, here I am, getting ready to drag my exhausted tail through my day on very little sleep。

Coming from your south Louisiana girl, this book was on fleek! I loved it so much and it did ring true of what it can be like living down here。 Cajuns are known to be spiritually gifted。 This is about a fictitious town where they hail from all the way down the boot。 Loved all the Cajun references made! Do not miss this book!

This book was so beautifully written。 I loved the atmosphere of this book so much。 I was guessing the whole time as to who did what。 I will be reading more from Ginny in the future for sure。 I listened to the audiobook of this and there were some things added in that really just made the atmosphere so rich。 I loved it。

This one kept me turning pages for sure。 A very fun, dark romp, and I am so here for the new trend of finally setting stories in other places in the country besides the obvious ones that have been used a million times。 Magic, spooky, and while I guessed some twists, I certainly didn't guess others。 This one kept me turning pages for sure。 A very fun, dark romp, and I am so here for the new trend of finally setting stories in other places in the country besides the obvious ones that have been used a million times。 Magic, spooky, and while I guessed some twists, I certainly didn't guess others。 。。。more

This was such a well written atmospheric YA supernatural mystery that I absolutely loved! Blah。 I had higher hopes for this book。 It felt like every chapter just dragged on and on with Grey's grief, just so repetitive before anything happened in the last few pages。 A little bit of a surprise at the end but not much, and a little confusing。 I was so intrigued about magical elements in the Bayou of Louisiana but it was just missing so much。 Blah。 I had higher hopes for this book。 It felt like every chapter just dragged on and on with Grey's grief, just so repetitive before anything happened in the last few pages。 A little bit of a surprise at the end but not much, and a little confusing。 I was so intrigued about magical elements in the Bayou of Louisiana but it was just missing so much。 。。。more

Can’t help but dislike the redundant writing style - I mean, how many chapters do we have to hear about how Grey misses Elora or how many times do we need to know the weather in La Cachette is hot and humid? There were also so many characters (10/12 Summer Children!) but we barely see any of them save for Grey, Hart, Evie and one other - so what was the point? This is also another one of those books where the plot and drama is only kept alive because all the characters are lying / do not want to t Can’t help but dislike the redundant writing style - I mean, how many chapters do we have to hear about how Grey misses Elora or how many times do we need to know the weather in La Cachette is hot and humid? There were also so many characters (10/12 Summer Children!) but we barely see any of them save for Grey, Hart, Evie and one other - so what was the point? This is also another one of those books where the plot and drama is only kept alive because all the characters are lying / do not want to tell the truth because it will end the story early。 I mean, I know the book is called Dark and Shallow Lies but I totally didn’t expect it to be so literal - all the lies they tell are really dark and, dare I say it, shallow af - told only to protect themselves。Ugh。 。。。more

One of my favorites of the year。

Brooke,

I was torn between giving 3 or 4 stars but I went with 4 because it was fresh and unusual。 It felt completely believable while being wholly unbelievable。 Recommend if you want a less ferocious supernatural palette cleanser。

This story was so close to being great。 The summer children of La Cachette were all born the same year and each have their own unique gifts in the self proclaimed psychic capital of the world - but this story was pulled down by a predictable murder mystery that didn't feel unique or different。I think this story would be been better as a multi POV, so that characters like Sera and Sander could be developed better, as they ended up in the background。 It would have helped fill some of the time spen This story was so close to being great。 The summer children of La Cachette were all born the same year and each have their own unique gifts in the self proclaimed psychic capital of the world - but this story was pulled down by a predictable murder mystery that didn't feel unique or different。I think this story would be been better as a multi POV, so that characters like Sera and Sander could be developed better, as they ended up in the background。 It would have helped fill some of the time spent doing little to nothing, which was a lot of the book。After sleeping on it, what I'm mostly left with is a feeling of frustration。 These characters were so unique, so interesting, and we never got to see them fully realised, out of the murder mystery box they were put in。 Grey in particular only started getting to grips with her gifts during the book, and this was never fully explored。 I somewhat predicted what would happen at the end, although it tried for a plot twist。 A lot of this story relied on shock value, but went too hard to the point where I was struggling to take it seriously。 I also felt a lack of emotion for Elora, Grey's missing friend, and there was something about the way it was written where it felt like every character was there to interact with Grey, and they didn't really do anything when they left the scene。 。。。more

Wow, this book is phenomenal! The descriptions of the hot, sticky bayou took me back to the summers I visited family in Louisiana, but this small town filled with secrets was otherworldly。 This novel takes the classic "who done it" and gives the reader a mystical thriller that was tortuous to put down。 Every chapter had me questioning what I already knew and left me guessing。 I almost wish Sain didn't give us the epilogue; she should have let us fester in the storm。 Wow, this book is phenomenal! 3。5- it was fun to read and atmospheric but the plot was fairly basic, I would have liked the story to be more developed and less predictable, I also felt there was too much telling and not enough showing when it came to character relationships, particularly that of Grey and Elora- also the love interest was high key creepy and not in the way it was meant to be。。 that being said I did enjoy it

DNF @ 20% I just don't like this and I'm not sure I can even pinpoint why。 I don't care about the characters。 The atmosphere is good, but what even is this story? Like atmosphere alone isn't enough。 Give me plot, real conflict, tension, and characters who aren't dry, annoying, and utterly flat, but also full of irritating, unearned levels of angst。 DNF @ 20% I just don't like this and I'm not sure I can even pinpoint why。 I don't care about the characters。 The atmosphere is good, but what even is this story? la cachette always takes up space in my head。 it's like i never really leave the bayou。 not entirely。 my feet stay wet。 the smell of the swamp lingers in my nose。 and when i finally get back down here at the start of every summer, everything is just the way i left。 like no time has passed at all。it hurts to think about this book。 not in a bad way of course。 it hurts because nearly ever character scratched my heart and left a deep gaping wound, still bleeding and aching with every beat。 what mak la cachette always takes up space in my head。 it's like i never really leave the bayou。 not entirely。 my feet stay wet。 the smell of the swamp lingers in my nose。 and when i finally get back down here at the start of every summer, everything is just the way i left。 like no time has passed at all。it hurts to think about this book。 not in a bad way of course。 it hurts because nearly ever character scratched my heart and left a deep gaping wound, still bleeding and aching with every beat。 what makes it even more heart-wrenching is the fact that i could relate to every single one of them, in some way。 im so sorry for the 12 summer children and their fates。 there's an old story that thells how human beings originally had two faces, four arms, and four legs。 but god was afraid of being overpowered, so he split them all in half。 that's why we all have one twin soul out there in the world。 elora only had one wish her entire life she spent on the island。 she wanted to be free - from the bayou, the woods and the people in this town。 kind of ironic that she ended up being tied to the island and its magic forever。 way more heartbreaking is what happened to elora and her power being explained as herself being a witch of the waters。 it。 broke。 my。 heart。 one of the most exciting powers was gifted to case。 bilocation。 the ability to phisically exist in two places at once。 i know, it sounds super cool。 i loved it too, at first。 but imagine the hurt you're feeling when you're carrying around this gift and couldn't help the girl you loved the most because you weren't there。 mackey seemed chill, unbothered and calm the whole time and after the book has ended i may figured out why。 he has the power of appearing visions of someones death。 he called it out and he probably hated himself the most because elora played it off and accepted it。 sadly, there wasn't much more information of mackey - he ran tracks, went to a different school and thats it。 seraphine and lysander are twins。 carbon copies of each other。 the geminis of the town。 both of them are really talented, intelligent and have the brains (in fact, sera can speak around five or seven languages! also yes, sander is the only gay character who was mentioned)。 they share the gift of being able to visualize the future, the past, the unknown or simple visions they have。 and i wish they talked with the rest of their group what they drew。 if i had to point out who would be able to solve the mystery around elora, it would be them。 but they kept shut。 hart just hurts。 it hurts。 like, really really bad。 he has the most fucked up gift and i just feel sorry for him。 if you would meet hart in real life, there would be no need to tell him how you feel。 he already knows。 the burden of feeling the emotions of other people is heavy on his shoulders and there were times where i really hated him。 i hated him for what he did with greycie, i hated himfor what he did with elora and i hated him for being so broken that he manipulated and lied。 and then i just felt sorry。 at the end of the book hart was nothing but a overwhelmed teenager with too many emotions which didnt belong to him in first place。 evangeline grew up in an abusive household, the brother of her mother hurted her more times than she could count。 besides that, evie can hear the voices of the dead。 more than once evie said that the dead lied too, the death wouldnt prevent the lies。 and i wish that would be true because evie didn't know shit and she was blinded by hart being her saviour - the one who saved her from her uncle。 there wasn't really a another option than falling for hart, you know? maybe i would've gone insane too when i heard that many dead voices。 maybe i would've done the same。 just maybe。 but im just so sorry for evie, she just wanted to be loved。and im sorry for ember, orli and aeron。 number nine, ten and eleven。 zale appeared from the woods and brought thousands of secrets with him。 him being a good friend for elora。 him being the son of an accused killer。 him being a child of thunder and storm。 him being the one who made greycie feel galvanic。 zale lost everyone。 literally everyone。 im just thankful for greycie because she saved him。 and he did, too。greycie had it the worst。 she was eloras twin flame, unrelated twins and born at the same day, the same time, the same second。 grey had no clue about her gift and to be honest, as a reader we wont know either。 lets just say greycie saved herself and she is the one who solved the mystery around elora。 and when i think about grey then i think about her being in her bathroom, choking on water and vomiting dirty water from the bayou, nearly drowning because of a vision she had。 this scene jolted through my body and splitted my bones into thousand small pieces。at the end, they were six out of twelve。 "you don't know half of what i've seen。 the things i've felt。 things that would rip your guts out and send you huntin' a shotgun to put in your mouth。 things that live inside me every fucking minute of every miserable day。" his words are category 5。 。。。more
