Summary

‘Untamed will liberate women - emotionally, spiritually, and physically。 It is phenomenal。’Elizabeth Gilbert, author of City of Girls and Eat Pray Love

Who were you before the world told you who to be?

Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world, and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us。 From the beloved New York Times bestselling author, speaker and activist Glennon Doyle。

*****

For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her discontent。 Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love。 Three words flooded her mind: There。 She。 Is。 At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high but soon she realised they had come to her from within。 This was the voice she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions and social conditioning。 Glennon decided to let go of the world’s expectations of her and reclaim her true untamed self。

Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call。 It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live。 It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts。

Untamed shows us how to be brave。 And, as Glennon insists, 'The braver we are, the luckier we get。'

I will start this review by saying that this book took me forevvverrr to work through。 I always have trouble becoming invested in inspirational style books, but the author’s style and writing kept me interested in finishing her story。 Although not all of the author’s topics felt relevant to where I am in my life right now, I truly feel like I gained so much value from the added perspectives。 The writing was absolutely excellent, and I found myself bookmarking and sending quotes each time I picke I will start this review by saying that this book took me forevvverrr to work through。 I always have trouble becoming invested in inspirational style books, but the author’s style and writing kept me interested in finishing her story。 Although not all of the author’s topics felt relevant to where I am in my life right now, I truly feel like I gained so much value from the added perspectives。 The writing was absolutely excellent, and I found myself bookmarking and sending quotes each time I picked it up。 Because of this, I can now say that I understand the hype surrounding this book! I’ll end the review with one of my favorite quotes, because it feels worth sharing, “The thing that breaks your heart is the very thing that you were born to help heal。” 。。。more

I understand where this book was coming from I truly did but to suggest if you have work done, wear makeup, or are in a loving heterosexual marriage you are somehow being repressed is crazy to me。 Glorifying mental illness and suggestion that everyone is gay and unsatisfied in a traditional lifestyle really seemed the opposite of empowering。 Also you don't have to hate men in order to love women。 I understand where this book was coming from I truly did but to suggest if you have work done, wear makeup, or are in a loving heterosexual marriage you are somehow being repressed is crazy to me。 Glorifying mental illness and suggestion that everyone is gay and unsatisfied in a traditional lifestyle really seemed the opposite of empowering。 Also you don't have to hate men in order to love women。 。。。more

I fully expected to be disappointed by the hype surrounding Doyle's work。 I am elated to find how wrong I was。 This book found me right when I needed it to。 Thank you, Glennon, for helping me remember who I am。 I look forward to reading your next work。 (The mentions of Abby Wambach were a surprise bonus since I wasn't aware of the marriage between the author and one of my soccer idols!) As Roxanne Gay mentioned, I’m not the target audience but I appreciate Glennon telling her story。

I was resistant to this book for some reason。 Not sure why but I actually really liked it quite a lot。 Some of the stories resonated more with me than others but overall really enjoyed it all。

Loved it! Love how it’s laid out in short stories。 Will be dipping in and out of this one for sure

It is really hard to review self-help books。 They either resonate with you or they don’t, and the reasoning is usually deeply personal。 For this reason, after finishing this book, my book club has decided to ban self-help books from being selected for future meetings。This book did not resonate with me personally。 I did think there were some valuable insights, and though I did agree with many of the points the author made, the whole book had an air of pretentiousness that did not sit well with m It is really hard to review self-help books。 They either resonate with you or they don’t, and the reasoning is usually deeply personal。 For this reason, after finishing this book, my book club has decided to ban self-help books from being selected for future meetings。This book did not resonate with me personally。 I did think there were some valuable insights, and though I did agree with many of the points the author made, the whole book had an air of pretentiousness that did not sit well with me。 It felt like the author was trying so hard to be authentic, that she instead came off as inauthentic。 She overexplained her life decisions and although I am happy that she found happiness with her partner, it felt like she was trying to vindicate her actions through these long winded descriptions of their connection to one another。I know other people enjoy her style of writing, but bottom-line is, I was not the right audience for this memoir。 。。。more

1。 I just wanted to tell you something that somebody told me in the beginning。 It’s okay to feel all of the stuff you’re feeling。 You’re just becoming human again。 You’re not doing life wrong; you’re doing it right。 If there’s any secret you’re missing, it’s that doing it right is just really hard。 Feeling all your feelings is hard, but that’s what they’re for。 Feelings are for feeling。 All of them。 Even the hard ones。 The secret is that you’re doing it right, and that doing it right hurts somet 1。 I just wanted to tell you something that somebody told me in the beginning。 It’s okay to feel all of the stuff you’re feeling。 You’re just becoming human again。 You’re not doing life wrong; you’re doing it right。 If there’s any secret you’re missing, it’s that doing it right is just really hard。 Feeling all your feelings is hard, but that’s what they’re for。 Feelings are for feeling。 All of them。 Even the hard ones。 The secret is that you’re doing it right, and that doing it right hurts sometimes。2。 Like Westley from The Princess Bride, who said, “Life is pain, Highness。 Anyone who says differently is selling something。”3。 What is truest and the most beautiful life you can imagine? Put it all on paper4。 Brave does not mean feeling afraid and doing it anyway。 Brave means living from the inside out。 Brave means, in every uncertain moment, turning inward, feeling for the Knowing, and speaking it out loud。。。 Brave is not asking the world what is brave。 Brave is deciding for one self。 5。 Every truth is a kindness even if it makes others uncomfortable。 Every lie is an unkindness even if it makes others comfortable。 6。 There is no greater burden on a child than an unlived life of parents。 7。 Dr Maya Angelou。 Do the best things you can until you know better。 Then when you know better, do better。 8。 You don’t want modesty。 You want humility。 Humility comes from inside out。 。。。more

Even though this book felt like the author was writing to inspire others, and I will admit, parts definitely made me think of my ways of life。 I appreciate the effort and the relatability of some of the struggles the author went through, but at times it felt like she was trying to pat herself on the back and convince herself that she’s done a good job。 Ultimately parts were inspiring, uplifting, and made me want to challenge myself, but it just didn’t jive with me 100%。

I had no idea who Glennon Doyle was, let alone that this was a memoir。 I honestly thought this was a fiction book。 I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews, but in my opinion it’s actually well worth a listen。 I listen to a lot of memoirs as a way to learn more about others, and it opens your eyes to what people go through that you have no idea about, and some of which you can actually relate to。 One of the things Glennon says is, “It’s not about me preaching what to do, it’s about what you think you sh I had no idea who Glennon Doyle was, let alone that this was a memoir。 I honestly thought this was a fiction book。 I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews, but in my opinion it’s actually well worth a listen。 I listen to a lot of memoirs as a way to learn more about others, and it opens your eyes to what people go through that you have no idea about, and some of which you can actually relate to。 One of the things Glennon says is, “It’s not about me preaching what to do, it’s about what you think you should do。” So I’d say this book is more of a, take what you want from it。 It’s just one person's opinion, not a self-help book。 。。。more

This book was a hard one to stay focused on。 The author did have blurbs that were wonderful, but the writing was all over the place。 It reads more of like a journal in that whenever something popped into her head, she shifted topic。 I think that this book should have been edited better so that the topics of conversation were organized more。

I heard about this book on Instagram and blogs。 Everyone was raving about it, calling it “life changing” - But how good could a “self help” book really be? I grabbed the audio book from the library and a few chapters in I went back and purchased a physical copy of the book because I knew this book would be important to me。 Turns out it’s not really a self help book; It’s a memoir。 But I think she is so honest about her story and feelings that it acts as a mirror for the reader and so it helps that way。 Instead of a self-help book that says “don’t do this, do this”, the author says I messed up and did this and then this happened, and then I started doing this instead and my life got a little better。 I related to so many stories in this book, and it just changed my perspective on how I think about feelings。 For me this is a book I will read over and over again, taking notes in the margin and highlighting quotes。 In the midst of a horrible pandemic and year, this book made me feel good and strong。 The authors first book was about how she was an addict and overcame that and still learned to thrive。 She started a great career, married the perfect man and had amazing children。 Her second book was about how her husband cheated but through their families faith, they worked through it and overcame。 This book is about how she realizes she was in love with a women, left her husband, and is happier than she has ever been。 Life is journey, ladies and gentlemen。 This book is about becoming who you are and living your truth。 It’s about parenting, and fear, ups and down, happiness, standing up for yourself, faith and support and what they all mean to you, not to other people。 It’s about women who have been tamed by society in more ways than one and how we can all learn to be。。。 untamed。 I said I will read this book many times, which for me is the highest honor any book can get。 Not because it’s a self help book, not because I think the writers memoir is so fantastically compelling, not because it’s perfect, there are a few parts I don’t agree with - but because I have felt or gone through almost every challenge or revelation she has faced - I’ve just never called myself out on it before。 This is a very cool book。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

The thing I liked best about Untamed is the honestly with which Glennon Doyle addresses the bumps and curves in her journey。 I believe what she says about living beyond fear because I believe that she has been so so afraid。 Untamed contains meaningful essays about queerness, racism, parenting, addiction, and religion through a uniting theme that looking deep inside and following your truest heart will lead you though discomfort and pain and will keep you scraping your knees but will ultimately l The thing I liked best about Untamed is the honestly with which Glennon Doyle addresses the bumps and curves in her journey。 I believe what she says about living beyond fear because I believe that she has been so so afraid。 Untamed contains meaningful essays about queerness, racism, parenting, addiction, and religion through a uniting theme that looking deep inside and following your truest heart will lead you though discomfort and pain and will keep you scraping your knees but will ultimately leave you transformed and more whole。 She writes with humility。 。。。more

One of the most thought provoking books I’ve read in a very long time。 Doesn’t exactly read like a narrative, more so a series of anecdotes。 Countless well written concepts around life and society that momentarily give you pause and take a minute to sink in when you realize their truth

Jennifer Gyuricska

I enjoyed the audiobook and hearing the author read it herself。 Felt more like coffee and a conversation。 Worth the hype。

Delia

I enjoyed the first few chapters, but then things got very repetitive and I must admit I got bored, and gave up。

I liked this book, it’s a quick read and the stories are wonderfully written。 She takes you along for the ride。 She tells you the life lesson she learned from each story and touches on some important topics。 She just scratches the surface, but a great introduction to different topics。 She’s honest about herself and life。 It’s about family, love, societal cages and how you can give permission to yourself to change how you interact with them
