Summary

Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?

Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you'll never have to do it again。 Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever。 The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results。 In fact, none of Kondo's clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list)。

With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house "spark joy" (and which don't), this international best seller featuring Tokyo's newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home - and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire。

I’ve gotten rid of 21 garbage bags of clothes that don’t “spark joy”

Inspiring read but unsure about the practicality of the advice Kondo gives。 I appreciated it for what it was, but I did not feel the need to follow the protocol。

I listened to this on audiobook and I think that is the only way I was able to finish it。 I commend this book because it did its job in inspiring me want to tidy up my home。 That being said, this book did not bring me joy。 It was ALL over the place and completely disorganized。 The same information was repeated over and over randomly and much of it was a little too far out there for me (such as thanking your personal objects aloud daily)。 If you are interested in this content, I would recommend t I listened to this on audiobook and I think that is the only way I was able to finish it。 I commend this book because it did its job in inspiring me want to tidy up my home。 That being said, this book did not bring me joy。 It was ALL over the place and completely disorganized。 The same information was repeated over and over randomly and much of it was a little too far out there for me (such as thanking your personal objects aloud daily)。 If you are interested in this content, I would recommend trying to find a summary online。 。。。more

This book found me exactly when I needed it。 It gave me the framework I needed to send off the possessions that had followed me around for most of my adulthood simply because they were there, but had long outlived their purpose。 I just took ten bags and three boxes of stuff to Goodwill, and am grateful for the new framework for evaluating my relationship to material things。

Would recommend to someone looking to downsize but doesn’t know how/where to start。 Good read for essentialism/minimalism。 Less is more。

I wanted to like this book more than I did。 While reading it I could definitely see how the specific process may resonate with some but not everyone。 I don't think her whole specific process is one I could use because I don't hold much attachment with most of my items。 I understand the theory that everything having its own spot in theory but I question the actual ability to do this in a regularly used household。 I understand that some individuals may be able to do that but I don't think the mass I wanted to like this book more than I did。 While reading it I could definitely see how the specific process may resonate with some but not everyone。 I don't think her whole specific process is one I could use because I don't hold much attachment with most of my items。 I understand the theory that everything having its own spot in theory but I question the actual ability to do this in a regularly used household。 I understand that some individuals may be able to do that but I don't think the masses can。 I could just be too close minded when it comes to organization as well。 I have a process and try to refine it but I have never fully created and followed something new。 I liked the book in theory but not practicality。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 It provides helpful ways of thinking through whether or not you really need or want to keep things。 I will say that at times some of suggestions were a bit much for me, but that did not take away from enjoying the book。

Just started reading the first chapter today。 A different philosophy of how to declutter and organize。 I look forward to reading more。

For the first half of the Book I was semi-annoyed by the “woo woo-ness,” which starkly contrasts my practical nature。 However, after opening my mind I was able to appreciate her drastically different perspective。 “Can you truthfully say that you treasure something buried so deeply in a closet or drawer that you have forgotten its existence? If things had feelings, they would certainly not be happy。 Free them from the prison to which you have relegated them。 Help them leave that deserted isle to For the first half of the Book I was semi-annoyed by the “woo woo-ness,” which starkly contrasts my practical nature。 However, after opening my mind I was able to appreciate her drastically different perspective。 “Can you truthfully say that you treasure something buried so deeply in a closet or drawer that you have forgotten its existence? I am a cleaning fanatic。 I love organizing anything and everything: books, desk drawers, make up, outdoor equipment, bathroom supplies…if it’s an inanimate object, prepare for it to be appraised, sorted, and put away in a carefully devised system of efficiency! I had heard of this book, and watched the author’s show on Netflix where she visited people for consultations。 I enjoyed seeing how she and her method worked, but never read her book。 Also, I have a confession to make: behind my facade of I am a cleaning fanatic。 I love organizing anything and everything: books, desk drawers, make up, outdoor equipment, bathroom supplies…if it’s an inanimate object, prepare for it to be appraised, sorted, and put away in a carefully devised system of efficiency! I had heard of this book, and watched the author’s show on Netflix where she visited people for consultations。 I enjoyed seeing how she and her method worked, but never read her book。 Also, I have a confession to make: behind my facade of a spotless desk and a meticulously arranged bookcase…I have all-too-convenient storage bins under my bed filled with miscellaneous things, clothes either stretched onto hangers or in miniature messy heaps in storage cube drawers。 I’m good at sorting and tidying things I know what to do with, that I have multiple of, that are easy to sort: books, pens, art supplies。 But I falter at tidying random little pieces memorabilia, items I don’t know why I keep, and also, the most dreaded items, gifts from people that know me too little to give me anything remotely my taste, but know me too well that I fear one day they’re going to ask me about the item。 So I have kept things out of guilt。 So, so many things。 After reading this, I am ready to hold all of my possessions and ask if it sparks joy, and ditch all of the guilt。 I also liked hearing about the personal records of how many hoarded items people had (60 toothbrushes? For one person??), how many bags of garbage they had at the end of their journey, etc。 I took notes while I read this book, and I found about 75-80% of it useful, which is fantastic compared to other cleaning/organizing books I’ve read。 Some of it will definitely help my mother, but I almost wish the author herself could help her! After reading reviews, especially one star reviews, I feel a little disappointed at seeing how many people make fun of this woman’s methods: calling her crazy, “she must be single with no kids if she has the time to do all of this!”, “She is using her mental problems to make a profit!”, etc。 Seriously? I think some people are just bitter about their own tidying habits and take it out on her。 I do agree with those that mentioned in their review that some advice will mainly affect solely Japanese people, such as having “Japanese closets” (I’ll have to google it later), folding kimonos, and owning Shinto or Buddhist charms to make a shrine on the top shelf of a bookcase, as the author recommends。 (Though I understand not all Buddhists are Japanese!)。 But I feel sad to see people criticize the author so scathingly over something that should be expected, (come on people, she is Japanese, and a large chunk of her clients are also Japanese!), with a few reviews bordering on racist。 I did take off one star because Marie Kondo mentioned throwing items out that seemed like they could be easily donated。 Landfills are already filled to bursting, so please, if you do the KonMari method, donate to Goodwill, second-hand book stores, etc。 or if it’s worth the hassle, resell a few items。 Do not just throw away 20 garbage bags worth of your possessions, unless every item in your house is moldy, moth-eaten into swiss cheese, or a family of skunks lived with you。 Ultimately, for me, this method of tidying sparks joy。 。。。more

This book is not simply about tidying up your home。 It's about the psychology behind all the clutter in our lives。 The KonMari Method, if followed faithfully, will help someone develop the habit of consciously choosing which things to keep in their life and which things need to be discarded or let go。 I like how she covers all the common internal dialogue people have with themselves when they are choosing not to get rid of something。 This book is not simply about tidying up your home。 It's about the psychology behind all the clutter in our lives。 The KonMari Method, if followed faithfully, will help someone develop the habit of consciously choosing which things to keep in their life and which things need to be discarded or let go。 I like how she covers all the common internal dialogue people have with themselves when they are choosing not to get rid of something。 。。。more
