Summary

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love this book so much。 Margaret Rogerson is excellent at including diverse, complex characters into her writing, like the main character of this book, Elizabeth, being a very tall, interesting teenager (with a sword!!!) and the love interest, Nathaniel, being the stereotypical tall, dark, and brooding character, but so much more depth included。 He is also probably bi because it mentions in the book that he had previously been involved with both girls and boys。 Hurrah for diversity and represe I love this book so much。 Margaret Rogerson is excellent at including diverse, complex characters into her writing, like the main character of this book, Elizabeth, being a very tall, interesting teenager (with a sword!!!) and the love interest, Nathaniel, being the stereotypical tall, dark, and brooding character, but so much more depth included。 He is also probably bi because it mentions in the book that he had previously been involved with both girls and boys。 Hurrah for diversity and representation!!! The romance was humorous and cute, I enjoyed the first half of this book a lot but it began to drag out for me a bit。 This is just a personal preference for me, but overall a great adventure and fantastic ending。

I was looking for a book to get back into fantasy and this was the one。 A perfect balance of world building without getting too heavy, and great characters and story line! PlotElisabeth has gone her whole life believing that sorcery is evil。 An orphan growing up in a Great Library, she;s spent her days proving herself to the warden in hopes of becoming one herself。 But then everything seems to go wrong。 The Warden is murdered, and while Elisabeth is convinced that a sorcerer was the killer, s I was looking for a book to get back into fantasy and this was the one。 A perfect balance of world building without getting too heavy, and great characters and story line! PlotElisabeth has gone her whole life believing that sorcery is evil。 An orphan growing up in a Great Library, she;s spent her days proving herself to the warden in hopes of becoming one herself。 But then everything seems to go wrong。 The Warden is murdered, and while Elisabeth is convinced that a sorcerer was the killer, she seems to be the main suspect。 Thrown into a world of secrets and hidden powers, Elisabeth is forced to work with a man who should be her arch nemesis in order to clear her name and stop what has become a series of serial attacks on the Great Libraries of her world。 CharactersThe characters in this book are like that couple you see on a coffee date and make you believe in soulmates。 Elisabeth and Nathaniel both match each others energy so well, and Nathaniel dry, sarcastic humor has yet again raised my standards。 Taking them individually, I really like both of their arcs。 With romance as a sub-plot, we're spared the cheesy "I'm changing my whole life's thinking or a boy" shebang, and we get to see Elisabeth navigate her conflicting thoughts and emotions。 It's a really nice representation of a growth mindset not equaling completely changing yourself as a person。Nathaniel, oh Nathaniel。 He's such a funny character, and the best part is, he doesn't even mean to be drop dead hilarious。 I think Rogerson did a great job of capturing a morally gray personality in such a young man, and justifying his motives without making our boy look psychotic。 Silas。 My baby。 What a lovely demon with a soul。 I think he's the perfect companion for Nathaniel, and a great friendly character for Elisabeth to lean on。 He's a semi supporting character to the couple, but again, since this book was written so beautifully, he never seems like a side pieces, or awkwardly thrown in。 Overall ThoughtsThis book far surpassed my expectations。 Despite it taking me a chapter or two to realize we were in the third person, I was fully absorbed。 The idea that books are alive has always followed me, and seeing it come to life (haha), even for just a few hundred pages, made all my childhood (and current) dreams come true。The pacing of this book, romantically and otherwise, I think was perfect。 There was enough setting and world building that I could feel the age of the libraries around me, but it never dragged on like some fantasy/magic books tend to do。 There was no boring, hundred page long history lesson about the emergence of magic, it was touched on just enough to understand, then just used perfectly throughout。I think the tension of the romance development was also really really good。 In a sort of dramatic irony, we saw a lot more of Nathaniel's affection than Elisabeth, but neither of the characters lacked complete self awareness, which meant that we actually had a few sane, understandably scenes of their growing connection。I take off a star, just because I wasn't fully fully drawn in。 There was some aspect of suspense that was missing for me during the first portion of the book, even though the end had me rushing to finish。 Talking about the ending, it also felt slightly abrupt to me, maybe another chapter before the epilogue could've rounded it out more, but then again, it also could've drawn it out too much。Overall, super happy I picked up this book, and would definitely recommend for a nice magical murder mystery with a cute, grumpy romance tied in。 。。。more

My second Margaret Rogerson book and my second 5/5。 I found my new auto-buy author 😍 Will try to make it spoiler free here goes。。Give me Harry Potter vibes - grimoires, sorcery, even the library takes me back to Hogwarts add Howl's Moving Castle - the setting, the binding with a demon, an ancient Wizard's name, and the subtle romance and a generous amount> of Kuroshitsuji - Nathaniel and Silas' master-servant dynamic just reminds me of Ciel and Sebastian (if you watch the anime) --> and I got th My second Margaret Rogerson book and my second 5/5。 I found my new auto-buy author 😍 Will try to make it spoiler free here goes。。Give me Harry Potter vibes - grimoires, sorcery, even the library takes me back to Hogwarts add Howl's Moving Castle - the setting, the binding with a demon, an ancient Wizard's name, and the subtle romance and a generous amount> of Kuroshitsuji - Nathaniel and Silas' master-servant dynamic just reminds me of Ciel and Sebastian (if you watch the anime) --> and I got the story about books and/or libraries as an epic fantasy I didn't know I needed。I love the world building。 I love the character development - of our protagonist Elisabeth growing up and realizing that the knowledge she learned growing up in the Great Library was limited prejudiced and outdated。 Her ignorance to the world was cringey but I also pitied her - gave that realization that you need to expose a child to a whole lot of things about the world so they'd be more than ready。 But she wasn't stubborn for more than necessary and so I felt like I grew with her also。 The love story is a subplot and did not felt like it was just squeezed in just to have something。 I got a good enough tension, an ok fluff and a couple。。。 that knows and learns how to properly support their partner。 You know, like if Howl and Sophie would have been given more screentime for some fluff。 But honestly, it's the master-servant relationship that got to me。 It just completed the whole notion 'nothing is what it seems' In the beginning it gave me a 'chosen trope' vibes other than enemies to lovers but as the story progresses。。 ot didn't feel that way at all。 At least to me。 。。。more

Not as compelling of a story to me as An Enchantment of Ravens but I truly loved the characters。 I find myself more intrigued by the dynamics between the demon servant Silas and his handsome sorcer master Nathaniel than I am for Nathaniel and Elizabeth。。。。 🤔

I loved her first book way more 。 It had a great start but not sure what happened in the middle 。

Well done。 This was a pleasant stand alone。 I loved the characters and they all have such great chemistry。 This is a book about scorcery, grimoires, sword fights, demons and a dash of romance。My only complaint is。。。。 i need more!

Thank you everyone that helped me pick the first winner of my new #BattleOfTheBacklist monthly thing。 I’m having fun with it so I hope you are too! I loved that aspect of it。 And learning the small amounts of the magic system in the book made me want to know more so was definitely invested。 But never got the pay off unfortunately。⠀I think that this was just a not for me book。 I didn’t love the characters and felt totally confused most of the time。 I read this author’s debut many years ago and didn’t love that either so I just think her books and I are not made for each other。 They have left me wanting more story and less description, if that makes sense。 It’s just a case of wanting more but also needing less。 A weird place to be。⠀TW/CW: violence, death of parents and a young sibling, others I can’t remember because it’s been so long 。。。more

i took way too long to finish this book, really, I couldn't immerse myself in it and After reading it, i wondered if I had read the same book as everyone else because omg I was so bored i just wanted to finish it for heaven sake and i never disliked a fantasy book before but it was just so bland。 here the stuff i liked:-silas, duh (the only person - demon - who i actually liked)-The world building was truly amazing。 The whole world was so well written!! it seems so beautiful-books and the librar i took way too long to finish this book, really, I couldn't immerse myself in it and After reading it, i wondered if I had read the same book as everyone else because omg I was so bored i just wanted to finish it for heaven sake and i never disliked a fantasy book before but it was just so bland。 here the stuff i liked:-silas, duh (the only person - demon - who i actually liked)-The world building was truly amazing。 The whole world was so well written!! it seems so beautiful-books and the libraries now stuff i disliked:-they should all be dead, end of story。-the explanation of why elisabeth was so special was ??? not an explanation ?? I was so disappointed。-elisabeth's naivety throughout led to a lot of info-dump world building。-Now now i thought it was ennemies to lovers?? humm did i miss something? anything? no? ok well please answer the question: When were Nathaniel and Elisabeth enemies? When did he oppose her? When did she oppose him? When did they display antagonistic attitude towards each other? This was deffinitly not enemies to lovers。-The plot twists were too obvious, i mean for real。 I could see everythingI really wanted to like this book - i really did。 But this book was sadly not for me, but it was ok, it’s a shame really because the cover is soo gorgeous 。。。more

That’s Right Five Stars!!!! This book took me on an amazing journey。 Being a stand-alone I always worry there will be lack of world building/history or be super confusing because they info dump and your brain just can’t process the info, but not this book。 The world is so perfectly thought out and info is giving to you in just the right amount over the course of the book。 So beautiful!!! I loved the characters, Silas being my absolute favourite, such a fun character funny and entertaining but lo That’s Right Five Stars!!!!
