Summary

There is something terribly wrong in Wolf Ridge。 Every November, every teen is overwhelmed with a hunger for violence…at least, that’s the urban legend。

After Wyatt Green’s mother was brutally murdered last Fall, she’s convinced that the November sickness plaguing Wolf Ridge isn’t just a town rumor that everyone ignores…it’s a palpable force infecting her neighbors。 Wyatt is going to prove it, and find her mother’s murderer in the process。 She digs up every past brutal act she can find from Wolf Ridge’s past – from car wrecks, suicides, and unnamed victims turning up in rivers—and even reaches out to an out-of-state journalist that seems to believe her。 But all of her digging leads to nowhere。 Everyone in Wolf Ridge accepts that the November sickness is real, and absolutely no one will talk about it。

As Wyatt’s best friend Cash turns on her, and her friend is almost killed in a tragic accident, Wyatt panics – how can she keep her friends safe, and find her mother’s murderer, when no one believes her?

As the evidence stars to disappear, Wyatt wonders: is she just imagining everything? Is the sickness real, or are the people of Wolf Ridge just naturally prone to doing bad things?

Can Wyatt and her friends come out of the Violent Season unscathed, or is one of them going to be the next victim?

The Violent season was not the book I expected it to be, and not necessarily in a good way。Initially I was intrigued by the "mysterious illness" that supposedly befalls local teenagers in November。Sounds great, I am in!But then。。。。 when I expected horror, with gothic, supernatural elements, nothing comes of this story line, and it essentially gets abandoned halfway through the book。 I felt like I was lead to believe I'd be reading the type of novel featuring elements of magic realism and superna The Violent season was not the book I expected it to be, and not necessarily in a good way。Initially I was intrigued by the "mysterious illness" that supposedly befalls local teenagers in November。Sounds great, I am in!But then。。。。 when I expected horror, with gothic, supernatural elements, nothing comes of this story line, and it essentially gets abandoned halfway through the book。 I felt like I was lead to believe I'd be reading the type of novel featuring elements of magic realism and supernatural occurrences, but in the end it was just your run off the mill domestic abuse, rape, suicide, murder type of story we have all read countless times before。It just didn't work for me, mostly because I felt misled by the synopsis。On the plus side, the author is a very talented writer。 She did a great job setting the mood and dealing with some pretty heavy subject matter in an engaging way。 I enjoyed the style, just not the premise of the story。 I read/listened to the ebook as well as the audio version, and must say I really enjoyed the narration。 。。。more

Thank you Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for my first audiobook。 This YA thriller was a quick easy-to-read writing! I did think this was a bit mature and dark for a YA book but strangely enjoyed it。 The author was really good at setting a dark, depressing mood setting。 This story follows main character Wyatt and follows her toxic relationship。 She lives in a town that is filled with a "sickness" that causes them to kill。 In the end, I didn't expect the plot twist。 Please be aware of the trigger Thank you Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for my first audiobook。 This YA thriller was a quick easy-to-read writing! I was disappointed by the ending。 I was more on the haunted urban legend vibe and the ending kind of fell flat for me。

I LOVED this book! Our main characters were so real and I felt such a bond with Wyatt。 The emotions and struggles throughout were authentic and palpable。 It gets pretty dark and bleak at times but that's partly why I found myself so invested in the outcome。 This book is so well written and was so hard to put down。 I have nothing negative to say about The Violent Season and it's definitely a 5/5 skull read 💀 I LOVED this book! it was a solid 3 star read。 I enjoyed the concept and although i had an idea who was at fault i liked how it came about。 Although i would have liked if they talked about the sickness more。 i felt like we didnt really get enough closure out of the book and it didnt seem to be set up for there to be a second book

I wouldn't exactly call this good, but it did keep my attention。 I wouldn't recommend it and a week from now I probably won't remember it。 I wouldn't exactly call this good, but it did keep my attention。 I wouldn't recommend it and a week from now I probably won't remember it。 。。。more

Even though some of the book was predictable, there were still a lot of twists I wasn’t expecting。 I absolutely loved Wyatt and Porter。 Amazingly done and well written!

This book sounded like there might be some supernatural element to it but there was not。 Instead it was some weird coincidence and mainly a story about a relationship full of violence。 On top of that it never really felt like any of the characters sounded like real people but rather like bad caricatures of people。 Also the ending was predictable and disappointing。 The writing was extremely repetitive and basic。 Do not recommend。 Also Trigger Warning: violence, suicide, murder, rape。

Pretty good。 A girl named Wyatt , her mother was murdered。 She thinks there is a sickness in her town because of a lot of deaths in no time her town。 She is obsessed with cash, a boy who just uses her。 She finally remembered cash murdered her mother when they were high。 Bit drawn own and predictable

Definitely reads like a first novel。 The phrase "I was cuss words and cigarettes" was overused frequently。 I also didn't appreciate the use of the cliche phrase "I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding。" Interested to see where she goes from here。 Definitely reads like a first novel。 The phrase "I was cuss words and cigarettes" was overused frequently。 I also didn't appreciate the use of the cliche phrase "I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding。" Interested to see where she goes from here。 。。。more

Massive trigger warnings for this book: there is a really long scene where one of the characters sexually assualts and attempts to rape another character。I went into this book with really high hopes for it but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype I had created for it。 My primary issue with the book was that the blurb felt as though it gave too much information away。 I could be misremembering but I think the plotline about hunting for her mother's killer didn't really come into play Massive trigger warnings for this book: there is a really long scene where one of the characters sexually assualts and attempts to rape another character。I went into this book with really high hopes for it but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype I had created for it。 My primary issue with the book was that the blurb felt as though it gave too much information away。 I could be misremembering but I think the plotline about hunting for her mother's killer didn't really come into play in any meaningful way until around the 75% mark which is definitely too far into the book for something that has been included in the blurb。I was expecting this story to give me the vibes of "teenagers scare the living shit out of me" with a touch of unreliable narrator but the book just didn't have murderous teenagers vibe that I was expecting, I think the expectation for this book was that teenagers are mysteriously murdered in November when the actual vibe is a lot of people die in November and it's a very weird coincidence。The prolonged SA scene was somewhat crucial to my low ratings of this book。 I can somewhat understand the intention behind its inclusion but it felt gratuitously long and was incredibly detailed。 I read an eARC of this book so it is possible that finalised copies of this book will include a trigger / content warnings page but I definitely didn't have one in this book and this is very definitely a book that needs one。I think this book also felt as though it was missing a lot of intrigue as my friend who had only read the blurb for was able to accurately guess in a single guess who the murderer was。I hate leaving such a poor review for a book because it is no mean feat to write a novel but unfortunately this is a book that I don't think I liked anything about :( I am definitely not writing off this author as this definitely feels like a book that someone with different tastes to me would enjoy or even if it had been blurbed differently。。。 。。。more

The Violent Season, while a solid debut, was not at all what I expected it to be。 I expected a spooky, horror type story but this was predominantly about the toxic relationship between our MC Wyatt and her best friend/love of her life Cash, and the mystery of who killed her mother。 I’m not even sure if I enjoyed the book or if I just couldn’t stop reading because I wanted answers。 The writing was easy to read and the pace was good but I didn’t particularly love the characters。 I was surprised to The Violent Season, while a solid debut, was not at all what I expected it to be。 I expected a spooky, horror type story but this was predominantly about the toxic relationship between our MC Wyatt and her best friend/love of her life Cash, and the mystery of who killed her mother。 I’m not even sure if I enjoyed the book or if I just couldn’t stop reading because I wanted answers。 The writing was easy to read and the pace was good but I didn’t particularly love the characters。 I was surprised to see it was actually a debut from Sara Walters! It definitely didn’t feel like it。 My main issue (or frustration) with the story was the lack of answers surrounding the ‘November sickness’。。 it was mentioned so much throughout the book but for what? Nothing ever comes of it so what was the point! I think it would have been an all round better book if that element was taken out and it was just listed as a YA contemporary/murder mystery。 Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This is more of a teen character study than an actual horror/thriller。 Most of the "shocking" parts and deaths have already happened and so we hear about them from the characters' perspectives。 For most of the book, Wyatt is trying to figure out or she's wondering about what happened with two different deaths。 I didn't guess the mystery but I wasn't surprised by it either which is why I'm rating it 3 stars。 If I was shocked or if more crazy stuff happened, I'd probably rate it a 4。 It's a good s This is more of a teen character study than an actual horror/thriller。 Most of the "shocking" parts and deaths have already happened and so we hear about them from the characters' perspectives。 For most of the book, Wyatt is trying to figure out or she's wondering about what happened with two different deaths。 I didn't guess the mystery but I wasn't surprised by it either which is why I'm rating it 3 stars。 If I was shocked or if more crazy stuff happened, I'd probably rate it a 4。 It's a good spooky read but not great or groundbreaking。 。。。more

A very readable book, would be a good book discussion title, dealing as it does with sexual violence among teens, as well as gaslighting。 Four stars because I had the killer pegged practically from the get-go, and some of the scenes stretched credulity。 Still, well worth reading。

The Violent Season was an intriguing book about a town "sickness"。。。 or was it a murderer from outside? And is there really a violent season in Wolf Ridge? The general atmosphere of this book is a bit creepy and cold, a great story to read in these chilly almost-November days。 But I found the plot to be extremely lacking。 Not only was it extremely predictable, but even when writing this review, I found it difficult to articulate what actually happens。 There are a lot of conversations and even more teenage angst (think: no one in the world gets me, I can't wait to escape from this podunk town, etc。)。 Overall, not a bad "spooky season" read, but there are lots of other thrillers out there to get you in the Halloween spirit。 Thank you to Dreamscape Media for the audio ARC via Netgalley! 。。。more

Overall, an interesting story but nothing ground breaking or memorable。 I didn’t think the twists were surprising like others mentioned。 It was a short read so it wasn’t too hard to finish。 You don’t really get the chance to connect with the characters so you can’t really care for the story or invest yourself in it。 I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator was good though。
