The surreal Jodorowsky universe of the Incal brilliantly revisited: The artwork of Janetov is an unashamedly homage to that of Moebius of the original Incal, and is yet another tribute to continental European artistry for graphic novels。

Marcelo Lee

John Difool´s, all-time galactic loser, adventures from the very beginning - good even without the genius art of Moebius。

Moebius is absent from this second journey into the world of the Incal, but Jodorowsky's stream of consciousness writing style remains fully intact and the art is still great and more than capable of carrying the, quite frankly, crazy plot/universe。 Moebius is absent from this second journey into the world of the Incal, but Jodorowsky's stream of consciousness writing style remains fully intact and the art is still great and more than capable of carrying the, quite frankly, crazy plot/universe。 。。。more

So I read this after Akala mentioned the series is his favourite in Natives。 I started with The Incal, which in the timeline should be second but was the first written, on some vague recommendation I read online and I think it would work either way。If you read it the way I did, this is the backstory of John DiFool, Class R Detective, and the tale of him falling in love and solving some of the most scandalous crimes set to at least keep people glued to their TV sets for a bit。The world it’s set i So I read this after Akala mentioned the series is his favourite in Natives。 I started with The Incal, which in the timeline should be second but was the first written, on some vague recommendation I read online and I think it would work either way。If you read it the way I did, this is the backstory of John DiFool, Class R Detective, and the tale of him falling in love and solving some of the most scandalous crimes set to at least keep people glued to their TV sets for a bit。The world it’s set in has very obviously inspired other things, most clearly The Fifth Element, with its malevolent corporations, focus on consumption, lack of morals and obsession with televising more and more scandalous events to keep interest。 The art is amazing。 I definitely think I preferred this to The Incal but both are great。CW: near-constant violence or threat of violence/rape, substance use。 。。。more

Less crazy than "The Incal", less abstract and hippy-trippy new-age, and a lot more naturalistic, turpistic even。 Jodorowsky tries very hard to come up with ideas as eccentric and shockingly disgusting as they are absurd upon closer look。 Some very convenient plot turns, especially at the end when he wakes up to the fact he's writing a prequel and there's a need of tying it all somehow to the original plot-line。 However, all in all, it more-or-less works somehow and you eventually come to terms Less crazy than "The Incal", less abstract and hippy-trippy new-age, and a lot more naturalistic, turpistic even。 Jodorowsky tries very hard to come up with ideas as eccentric and shockingly disgusting as they are absurd upon closer look。 Some very convenient plot turns, especially at the end when he wakes up to the fact he's writing a prequel and there's a need of tying it all somehow to the original plot-line。 However, all in all, it more-or-less works somehow and you eventually come to terms with the fact that it's just his style。One of the stuff that stands out is his scathingly mean portrayal of mass-media and proles who mindlessly consume it。 It hits painfully close to home - especially, the more we tumble down along the path blazed by the dystopias of yore。 And, his elitist contempt for proles is so honest it's palpable。I liked the Janjetov's art。 It embodies the Moebius' spirit while still managing to be its own thing。 And it's less cartoonish, which counts as a plus in my book。 。。。more

Time to get back and re-read some graphic novels。 And this volume, and volume two, prequels, are magnificent。 Bested only by the Incal stories of Jodorowsky and the immortal Moebius。 Which I'll be diving into shortly。 Time to get back and re-read some graphic novels。 And this volume, and volume two, prequels, are magnificent。 Bested only by the Incal stories of Jodorowsky and the immortal Moebius。 Which I'll be diving into shortly。 。。。more

Solid follow-up to the first series, but a shade less compelling in the early middle

Jodorowsky continues to dazzle, and Janjetov continues Moebius's spirit。 One thing I didn't notice until the interview with Janjetov at the end, but when Jodorowsky was first introduced to his artwork, he said it reminded him of Moebius's early stuff, before he refined his style, so he decided to write an Incal prequel to fit the style, and over the course of the book the art style gradually becomes more refined, until the very last section, where it looks pretty much exactly like Moebius, at wh Jodorowsky continues to dazzle, and Janjetov continues Moebius's spirit。 One thing I didn't notice until the interview with Janjetov at the end, but when Jodorowsky was first introduced to his artwork, he said it reminded him of Moebius's early stuff, before he refined his style, so he decided to write an Incal prequel to fit the style, and over the course of the book the art style gradually becomes more refined, until the very last section, where it looks pretty much exactly like Moebius, at which point the timeline of the original Incal starts。 What a fun ride。 I also got myself After Incal, The Metabaron, and The Technopriests, and hope to read straight through them this Christmas, to give myself something to do。 Long live Jodorowsky! 。。。more

While it's not as original as The Incal, this prequel is still pretty fun as it tells the story of John Difool who again is the stories hero。 Because you presumably already know what will happen next, this volume can at times be annoying。 There's not much weight attached to certain characters story and fate as we know they aren't around in The Incal, and for that reason it'd maybe make sense to read this BEFORE the original。 But, by the end everything has been tied up nicely and it was a great e While it's not as original as The Incal, this prequel is still pretty fun as it tells the story of John Difool who again is the stories hero。 Because you presumably already know what will happen next, this volume can at times be annoying。 There's not much weight attached to certain characters story and fate as we know they aren't around in The Incal, and for that reason it'd maybe make sense to read this BEFORE the original。 But, by the end everything has been tied up nicely and it was a great exploration of the characters and world。 。。。more

4。5 starsThough it’s set in the same world and shares several characters in common with The Incal, I was surprised at how different in tone this prequel story is。 Depicting John DiFool’s tragicomic backstory, Before。。 is much less cosmic or digressively fantastical and focuses instead on John’s coming of age and a pivotal first investigation, all of which takes place in the megacity that The Incal begins in。 Instead it’s a conspiracy sci-fi noir, and being set almost exclusively in a dystopian s 4。5 starsThough it’s set in the same world and shares several characters in common with The Incal, I was surprised at how different in tone this prequel story is。 Depicting John DiFool’s tragicomic backstory, Before。。 is much less cosmic or digressively fantastical and focuses instead on John’s coming of age and a pivotal first investigation, all of which takes place in the megacity that The Incal begins in。 Instead it’s a conspiracy sci-fi noir, and being set almost exclusively in a dystopian slapstick Sodom means it’s a much cruder and crueler story, especially early on。 Strangely, I also found the characters and emotions more engaging here, with genuine romance and tragedy I didn’t feel nearly as much in The Incal’s grand galactic romp。Janjetov’s art is a let down from the previous book when he tries to imitate Moebius’s style, but as the story progresses he thankfully draws with his own distinct style more and more。 It’s not Moebius-quality, but it has charm。 。。。more

I love this series! You can tell Moebius still had his hand in this, as confirmed by the artist in the interview at the end of the book。 The detail in the artwork is amazing。 Third book on the way!

I'm gonna mark this as read even though I actually read The Incal, Book 1: Orphan of the City Shaft instead。 Essentially the same contents in both versions。 This is basically a note to myself because I keep seeing this and thinking I read it but not seeing it marked as read。 I'm gonna mark this as read even though I actually read The Incal, Book 1: Orphan of the City Shaft instead。 Essentially the same contents in both versions。 This is basically a note to myself because I keep seeing this and thinking I read it but not seeing it marked as read。 。。。more

And so the final book of the Incal (that I know) is finished and I must admit that a lot of the story now makes a lot more sense。True the universe (and trust me this story is on the grandest of scales - I know there are far more educated people than me would will be able to do more justice) is an amazingly rich place and it seems with every page there are new characters and situations and even worlds but now after reading my through the 3 books it all starts to make a lot more sense。Now the real And so the final book of the Incal (that I know) is finished and I must admit that a lot of the story now makes a lot more sense。True the universe (and trust me this story is on the grandest of scales - I know there are far more educated people than me would will be able to do more justice) is an amazingly rich place and it seems with every page there are new characters and situations and even worlds but now after reading my through the 3 books it all starts to make a lot more sense。Now the real challenge here is that I do not give spoilers - however this book really is nothing but one huge spoilers since it explains the origins and reasons for the events in the other two books (Incal and Final Incal) - so really to dive in to this book will reveal what is going on。 Strangely I tried to read these books in the order of their publication and for me at least I think this order works best - the artwork is truely amazing and it is fascinating to see small ideas and images which have found their way in to other books, comics and movies。 I can see now why so many people directly (and many more indirectly) credit this story, the artwork and even the vision is their own creations。 。。。more

Before the Incal takes a much bawdier and earthly tone than The Incal, but the action is just as fast-paced and enjoyable。 Despite the lack of mystical symbolism that permeated the first volume of the Jodoverse, the origin story of John Difool is just as satisfying。

So things have come full circle。 Last, or first, depending on how you approach series, is most civil of all the three。 What starts as mysterious detective story, serves as great prequel at the end。 Less mysticism, more reality。 All three books are now connected, and world is even richer, many things are explained。 You can keep it reading over and over again, discovering new lines and connections you missed previously, all within vivid world described with colorfull language。

Images are marvelous, but plot generally is naive。

Beautiful art, but little to no plot。What a disappointment。

Very good, but not nearly so compared to Incal。Definitely read Incal first - this one gives some more context, but also spoilers to Incal and should be read second (Jodorowsky also says this - read them as you would look at a tryptich: start in the middle, then left-to-right。Two notes on art:1。 Janjetov does an excellent job emulating Moebius。 He is also humble enough not trying to "innovate/break-out" - and I think that requires a great artist。2。 I have not realized that I've read the European Very good, but not nearly so compared to Incal。Definitely read Incal first - this one gives some more context, but also spoilers to Incal and should be read second (Jodorowsky also says this - read them as you would look at a tryptich: start in the middle, then left-to-right。Two notes on art:1。 Janjetov does an excellent job emulating Moebius。 He is also humble enough not trying to "innovate/break-out" - and I think that requires a great artist。2。 I have not realized that I've read the European version of Incal with much wilder color palette than the US version。 The color usage was fascinating and I was surprised to find out here that I have the US version of Before Incal。 if I haven't seen the European version, I'd be OK with this version, but I don't quite agree that the US audience requires more "realistic" coloring。。。。 。。。more

Another supreme achievement, The Incal saga may be one of the great works of our age。 John DiFool is still a man for our times, perpetually falling in a debauched metropolis, having lost his innocence, and needing to wake up to the possibilities of increased consciousness。 The book feels like it contains the whole spectrum of human emotion。

Rocko Estalon

Jer Clarke

Silly shit。 Surprisingly good implementation of the Star Wars-style prequel setup。 Violates the tone of the original but had some fun parts along with the strange gross nightmares。
