Summary

I'm really not sure how to rate this。。。 3。5 stars? 4 stars? I went into this a little unsure (especially with the Disney logo slapped on the cover and the binding, not that I hate Disney, but I just wasn't sure what to expect), but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying this。Though there were some things I wasn't particularly fond of。 For example, this book brought a lot of politics and Marxist ideologies to the table which I was not looking for, and did not want。 I came to this book seeking the beauty of whimsical, mysterious, and mildly frustrating yet magical Nonsense, not the nonsensical reality of socialism and Marxist theories (though my opinion on that matter is entirely irrelevant here and this is not the proper avenue for it)。 Needless to say, it was not the kind of nonsense I was looking for。 And thus, my dear Miss Braswell, a star has been knocked off of this rating (or at least a half) because of it。HOWEVER, I thought the rest of the story was wonderful and I loved seeing most of the Angleland bits just as much as the nonsensical Wonderland bits (aside from the afore mentioned issues)。 One of my favorite things was seeing the square where all the children played and where Alice photographed them in their various acts of play and shenanigans。 I would love doing something like that and playing with the children and learning their neat little games and fancies。 Wonderland was just as exciting and interesting as I hoped with only one little flaw: the way that Miss Braswell built her world was incredible except for the small fact that it was a bit confusing at times。 The way she wrote it was kind of brilliant in a sense。 It was so whimsical and confounding that it really felt like a dream, but while this was a great strength it was also a great weakness in the fact that it felt like waking from a dream where you can't recall all the details。 But it was while you were reading it。 It made some of the scenes hard to understand and hard to visualize because of how dream-like it appeared。 So, in a way, I don't know if that is something that needs to be corrected, or if it's something that makes the novel almost perfect in its understanding of Wonderland。 I suppose you'll have to be the judge of that。 As for characters (I will be brief, don't worry!), I really enjoyed Alice's character, though I thought there were some points were she was kind of rude and acted just the tiniest spoiled, but she's only human after all, and over all her character was well developed。 I loved Mr。 Katz, he was a perfectly beautiful addition and I really enjoyed his interactions with Alice。 He was interesting and I couldn't believe who is Wonderland counterpart was (though I suppose I should have seen it coming)。 All of my loves of Wonderland (the Hatter, the Dodo, the Gryphon, etc。。。) were perfectly wonderful and just full of the right kind of nonsense that I can't resist。 It was really interesting to see how everyone interacted with each other and it was a delight to see them all again。 The villains were perfectly, well, villain-y, except for Ramsbottom, if he can really be considered a villain (I suppose he is?)。 I feel like Miss Braswell tried too hard to make him a not so swell guy。 He was a politician, so that was a setup from the start, but he was way too open with his skewed thinking for it to actually be believable。 It just felt too boldfaced, where normally politicians hide their doings sneakily and snake-like。 It really wasn't thought out too well, but luckily he ended up having such a small part in the book that it didn't end up ruining it, but I think it could have been done better for sure。 Whew。 This review ended up being longer than I intended (sorry!)。 Anyway, this book ended up being a pretty delightful read and I'm glad I picked it up in the end。 Do with this what you may!Until the next marvelously nonsensical adventure, Happy reading, my friends! 。。。more

Unbirthday, by Liz Braswell。 It takes place in Kexford featuring Alice who goes back to Wonderland。 After reading other dark fairytale books, I searched for more and found this one。 Alice is different from other eighteen-year-old ladies in Kexford, which is perfectly fine with her。 She'd rather spend golden afternoons with her trusty camera or in her aunt Vivian's lively salon, ignoring her sister's wishes that she stop all that "nonsense" and become a "respectable" member of society。 So many Unbirthday, by Liz Braswell。 It takes place in Kexford featuring Alice who goes back to Wonderland。 After reading other dark fairytale books, I searched for more and found this one。 Alice is different from other eighteen-year-old ladies in Kexford, which is perfectly fine with her。 She'd rather spend golden afternoons with her trusty camera or in her aunt Vivian's lively salon, ignoring her sister's wishes that she stop all that "nonsense" and become a "respectable" member of society。 So many twists in this new story。 But thankfully with characters you mostly already know! What I loved about Unbirthday is that Alice really is just a regular girl, settled back into her own life, content with her photography and a guy she likes。 It really focused on Alice's growth。 I was skeptical in the end, I won't spoil anything, but I was unsatisfied, but I did like the classic parts with familiar tones。 'We're all mad here' is easily the best Mad Hatter quote。 If you like Wonderland, read this。 I don't have a lot more to say, but a ruined childhood is still a ruined childhood。 It will be ruined。 。。。more

The book was enjoyable and the writing was well done, but with the ending, everything we built up to during the novel seemed to be for nothing。

What a truly delightful read! It is Alice all grown up but twice the fun。 I loved the heart behind the story and the morals。 I am excited to read more from this series!

4。5 StarsThis was such an enjoyable read。 It took me a bit to get into because I don't really like the Alice and Wonderland tale but this was very cool。 I love the characters and relationships between the worlds。 I was not expecting anything from any of the plots and I found both world stories to be excellent。 4。5 StarsThis was such an enjoyable read。 It took me a bit to get into because I don't really like the Alice and Wonderland tale but this was very cool。 I love the characters and relationships between the worlds。 I was not expecting anything from any of the plots and I found both world stories to be excellent。 。。。more

Not my favorite Twisted Tale。 The thing I liked the best was Mr。 Katz。 He was a great addition to the book, and I truly enjoyed reading about him and Alice。 And his Wonderland counterpart was perfect。 He was my definitely my favorite thing from this book。I don't know what I expected from it but I feel like more could have been done with this story。 It did feel kinda draggy to me, again, I don't know what I was expecting but this did feel like a bit of a let down。 Not my favorite Twisted Tale。 The thing I liked the best was Mr。 Katz。 He was a great addition to the book, and I truly enjoyed reading about him and Alice。 And his Wonderland counterpart was perfect。 He was my definitely my favorite thing from this book。I don't know what I expected from it but I feel like more could have been done with this story。 It did feel kinda draggy to me, again, I don't know what I was expecting but this did feel like a bit of a let down。 。。。more

This wasn’t as different as I thought it would be。 I found my attention drifting so much, and wanting the story to be a lot more chaotic and violent。 I still want to try a different story from the twisted tale series。 But this one I would maybe recommend if you absolutely love Alice in Wonderland。

I honestly don't know what was that book 。。 it was a load of 。。 NONESENSE !!So the story is about 18 years old Alice who wants to return to Wonderland until she sees some photos of her friends from Wonderland calling for her help, and Mary Ann is dead !! So it's up to Alice to Free Wonderland from the Reign of the Queen of Hearts before she wins the game of toys and bring the End Of Time, can Alice alone stop her ? Unbirthday by Liz Braswell is 504 pages of exciting logic and nonsense as an adult Alice finds her way back into Wonderland and begins the dramatic adventure to save it from the Queen of Hearts。

If I am being bluntly honesty? I felt like this book was a complete drag/bore to read & alot of the time I had no desire to pick it up to read which generally does not happen with the other Twisted Tales book (or any other books come to think of that!) as I found I couldn’t even put them down。 But this one? I could of left for weeks without having that thought of “I MUST read! Yes。 Yes I do & that’s simply because this would of made a GREAT Twisted Tale if the story/writing wasn’t so boring/slow。 。。。more

2。5 stars。 This book was better when taken as a whole。 I appreciated the shout-outs to the world of Wonderland as created by Disney, but the plot was uneven and only somewhat enjoyable in parts。 This book reads more like a YA book, whereas Braswell's other twisted tales feature a more mature writing style and plot。 2。5 stars。 This book was better when taken as a whole。 I appreciated the shout-outs to the world of Wonderland as created by Disney, but the plot was uneven and only somewhat enjoyable in parts。 This book reads more like a YA book, whereas Braswell's other twisted tales feature a more mature writing style and plot。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow。 It was a stunning novel。 I thoroughly enjoyed the various twists Braswell threw in。 The layout of the chapters was well done and kept the flow of the book very well。 She really held the torch for Wonderland and its whimsy and ran with it blazing。 The places, the characters, all of it was so vivid。 I really liked the back and forth between Wonderland and the real world and how Braswell meshed the two together。 It was nice to see pieces of both could be found within eachother as Alice made se Wow。 It was a stunning novel。 I thoroughly enjoyed the various twists Braswell threw in。 The layout of the chapters was well done and kept the flow of the book very well。 She really held the torch for Wonderland and its whimsy and ran with it blazing。 The places, the characters, all of it was so vivid。 I really liked the back and forth between Wonderland and the real world and how Braswell meshed the two together。 It was nice to see pieces of both could be found within eachother as Alice made sense of the nonsense and brought nonsense to places and things where there was a serious of lack of it。 The themes brought about by the book regarding Xenophobia and far right politics were, while unexpected, also very welcome。 These are tense times we live in and it was comforting to read that Alice was also apart of the fight。 I was a little disappointed there was no further mention of whether or not Alice got to meet Mary Ann after the end of Time as there was so much talk of her throughout the book and I also hoped there would be a little more of the Knave following his interesting betrayal。 I was most certain that there was something to it。 I half suspected that he was Katz。 But all in all, I thoughly enjoyed it。 I was so pleased when Katz was revealed to be the Anglish counterpart of Cheshire! I half hoped he would join Alice in Wonderland but knowing he was in on the magic will have to simply be enough。 。。。more

I enjoyed it。 It took me awhile, though。 I loved almost everything about it, except the love aspect。 It felt forced and out of place, especially after the realization of who’s counterpart Katz was。 It seemed weird。

Alice in Wonderland has long been a favorite of mine, and this retelling cemented this even farther。 Liz Braswell created such a complex addition onto the Alice in Wonderland canon (both Disney and Carroll's original)。 It's fun to see an older Alice, and to see how she's matured and to get a deeper look at her relationships (both with characters in England and Wonderland)。 It's got a good mix of Victorian-era England and Wonderland, both in terms of conflict and setting。 I think this is my favor Alice in Wonderland has long been a favorite of mine, and this retelling cemented this even farther。 Liz Braswell created such a complex addition onto the Alice in Wonderland canon (both Disney and Carroll's original)。 It's fun to see an older Alice, and to see how she's matured and to get a deeper look at her relationships (both with characters in England and Wonderland)。 It's got a good mix of Victorian-era England and Wonderland, both in terms of conflict and setting。 I think this is my favorite of the Twisted Tales so far! 。。。more

I was really excited to read this book because of how much I like Alice in Wonderland and retellings of the story。I am not sure what I really expected, maybe I expected to be a bit more “Twisted”。I liked the idea of Alice seeing Wonderlandians in the photos she took。 I like how she was on this mission to save Wonderland and all her friends there。 I enjoyed reading about the different characters and also about this one special man that catches Alice’s attention and Vice versa。It was a bit interes I was really excited to read this book because of how much I like Alice in Wonderland and retellings of the story。I am not sure what I really expected, maybe I expected to be a bit more “Twisted”。I liked the idea of Alice seeing Wonderlandians in the photos she took。 I like how she was on this mission to save Wonderland and all her friends there。 I enjoyed reading about the different characters and also about this one special man that catches Alice’s attention and Vice versa。It was a bit interesting to read about the different ways Alice had to get to Wonderland。 The story does go back and forth between Wonderland and the Angleland。There were parts that seemed to drag out and were a bit frustrating to read。 These parts for me were like the extra fluff and description of EVERYTHING which i felt was unnecessary at times。 The political part of the story was also not something I cared about but being that I’m a mood reader, I feel like maybe our recent political events got me burnt out on all that。 Overall it was still a good read, I did struggle to get through those slower, dragged out parts, but it did get interesting towards the last fourth of the book。 。。。more

It feels like it's been a very long time since I've read a retelling, so it felt appropriate to start with an Alice in Wonderland one that I've been so excited about。 Now bear in mind, I obviously have a fond love for Alice in Wonderland, so the fact that I really loved this may stem from that, or you could also see it as being a success since my expectations were obviously really high going in。 But honestly, this was everything I wanted it to be。 While my expectations were high, I was also supe It feels like it's been a very long time since I've read a retelling, so it felt appropriate to start with an Alice in Wonderland one that I've been so excited about。 Now bear in mind, I obviously have a fond love for Alice in Wonderland, so the fact that I really loved this may stem from that, or you could also see it as being a success since my expectations were obviously really high going in。 But honestly, this was everything I wanted it to be。 While my expectations were high, I was also super super nervous about being let down。 But this captured all the whimsy and charm of the original Disney adaptation of Wonderland, but also added some more。 I loved that you got to see an older Alice。 She did read as younger than 18 but, I think that's just the nature of who she is。 She's always inquisitive and imaginative and has a lovely childlike quality that I enjoy her bringing into adulthood。 I thought her views on the world seemed fitting for the Alice I know。 You got to see more of the real world here and that was such a cool added touch。 I loved the addition of photography, it was clever and really timely。 I wasn't expecting the discussions about prejudice against immigrants but it was a really nice addition。 I was easily able to picture all of the Wonderlandian characters that I know and love as their characterization seemed on par with what I knew。 It was like coming home reading this honestly, the nostalgia and nonsense just made me smile the whole time I was reading。 My one thing is that I did find the pacing to be very slow。 For the first 300 or so pages I didn't mind it so much, but around that point it did start to drag a bit。 But overall I'm so glad this didn't disappoint, and now I have to go watch the original Disney Alice in Wonderland for the millionth time! 。。。more

This felt like a very good extension of the original Alice in Wonderland novel。 The tone felt familiar while the events and places Alice visited were new。 I enjoyed the story even though this is not my usual type of book。

I am a HUGE Wonderland geek & this book made me so happy! The author did a lovely job of tying in Wonderland into the characters current world! We join Alice as she solves puzzles & fight for what’s right! It’s a lovely mirror image of our world and how one must stand up and have our voices heard, all while being true to ourselves!
