As a victim of spiritual abuse, this book made my flesh crawl。 In his introduction the author states he wrote this book in response to some of the abuse happening in fundamentalist churches。 He uses David as an example of how to behave。 His answer is to do nothing let God handle it What he does not emphasize that David fled and tried to stay alive。 He let God deal with Saul and Absalom but he did just do nothing he looked out for his well being。 Doing nothing is never the answer。

I finally came around to reading this book, as it has been classified as a classic by many Christian leaders and they were not wrong。 I don't know what I enjoyed more, the poetic-fictional style of Edward's writing or the content itself。 I found myself handing on every sentence。 It was an easy read that I finished in a few hours。 Since finishing, I went to Amazon-Kindle to order a few more of his books only to realize that already had 2。 I'm excited to read them。 I finally came around to reading this book, as it has been classified as a classic by many Christian leaders and they were not wrong。 I don't know what I enjoyed more, the poetic-fictional style of Edward's writing or the content itself。 I found myself handing on every sentence。 It was an easy read that I finished in a few hours。 Since finishing, I went to Amazon-Kindle to order a few more of his books only to realize that already had 2。 I'm excited to read them。 。。。more

The king Saul in me gives this book/play a 1 star。 Wtf did I just read?

Okay! This book gave me some amazing thoughts and ideas, igniting the imagination and causing my mind to soar to lofty new heights with the vivid imagery and poetic turn of phrase。 However! There is quite a bit of fanciful fabrication with the words of Scripture so my theologically conservative background was not a fan! I did but it though and it made me so excited to read the books of Samuel and study the life of David。 What an amazing example of leadership and humility! I highly recommend!

Lovely read really gets you thinking。。。

This book was an easy read, but wasn't what I had expected walking into it。 It reads more like a fictional tale than a discussion or study of these three kings。 This wasn't the book for me, but it was still good。 This book was an easy read, but wasn't what I had expected walking into it。 It reads more like a fictional tale than a discussion or study of these three kings。 This wasn't the book for me, but it was still good。 。。。more

Fue necesario re-leer para recordar porque me gustó tanto este libro hace años。 La forma original en la que está contado contrasta con sus verdades profundas。

Elizabeth Maust

I found the structure of the book to be rather boring and uneventful。 It felt as if every chapter was just a repetition of the one before。 I understand what the author was trying to convey, but personally did not connect well with his writing style。

Saul, David and Absalom and what we can learn from them - lots。。

Love this book。 Taking a true story and putting it into a play-like context to understand the importance of a humble leader and the difference between a Saul, a David, and an Absolom。

Onix Eberle

Learned so many things about the life of David and the leaders that surrounded him。

This story is a study in Biblical leadership, presented in story form。 It is short (94 pages) and easy reading and the included book discussion questions make it a good choice for a small group to read and discuss。 The reflection on the leadership of King Saul, David, and Absalom provide food for thought about church leadership today。 Recommended。

Okay。。。The book had a great meaning and concepts, however it was hard to follow。 Over all a good read due to the meaning and the vision brought about from the story of 3 biblical men。

The book depicts two ways of life, two types of people, and two different pursuits。 Saul represents one while David represents another。 Saul is tall and handsome。 He is admired by people。 He reasons like most。 Saul’s actions reveal his philosophy, laid out in chapter 6, which is to take matters into his own hands using his own wisdom。 Saul, threatened that he might lose his kingdom to David, throws spears at the harp player。 David was constantly thinking to himself: ‘What should I do?’ Some may The book depicts two ways of life, two types of people, and two different pursuits。 Saul represents one while David represents another。 Saul is tall and handsome。 He is admired by people。 He reasons like most。 Saul’s actions reveal his philosophy, laid out in chapter 6, which is to take matters into his own hands using his own wisdom。 Saul, threatened that he might lose his kingdom to David, throws spears at the harp player。 David was constantly thinking to himself: ‘What should I do?’ Some may answer as such: “When someone throws a spear at you…just wrench it out of the wall and throw it back。 Everyone else does, you can be sure。 And by throwing back the spear, you are to show others that you are courageous, bold, not a pushover, defender of faith and justice!” And…after the order of King Saul。 Keep doing that and you might find yourself just like King Saul: quite mad。 David was probably quite tempted to do fight back。 Everything within him urged him on。 But it was all too clear that he, too, would end up like King Saul, vying for vengeance, eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth, if he succumbed to his desires。 Instead, what does David do? He says the following: “Better he kill me than I learn his ways。 Better he kill me than I become as he is。 I shall not practice the ways that cause kings to go mad。 I will not throw spears, nor will I allow hatred to grow in my heart。 I will not avenge。 I will not destroy the Lord’s anointed。 Not now。 Not ever!” Here one can pause and ask, “Why did God allow David to go through all of this?” Edwards, the author of this book, states that God was performing surgery on David, to tear out the Saul inside David through King Saul。 It almost cost the patient’s life, but without it, a person cannot be used by God。 So many people leave God’s university because attending the university entails going through complete brokenness。 David was willing。 Edwards writes to comfort the Christians who have been hurt by other Christians。 The pain is more severe and bitter when Christians are harmed, deceived, attacked by other Christians since they all profess that they are a family of God。 But indeed, the church is not full of angels。 It’s full of broken people slowly conforming to the image of Christ。 There are countless stories of those who left their church due to conflicts, and to these people, Edwards writes。 Yes, you may have come across another Saul at church, someone who is cursing and spreading false rumors about you。 But are you any better? Look closely within yourself。 Who do you see? Is it not another Saul? The realization should humble those who thought themselves in the right and want to take revenge。 That David did not respond in the way he wanted to yet just avoided the situation as if nothing happened should inspire us to lay down our own anger (“you must be slow to speak, quick to listen, and slow to becoming angry since human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires…” James 1) and through the power of the holy spirit, overcome evil with good。 The story makes it clear that if we follow our own impulses of setting things right (instead of letting God put things to rights), we are no better than Saul and might become quite mad in years down the line。 “Vengeance is mine,” says the Lord (Rom 12:19)。 We are on this earth to walk, talk and act like Christ。 Nothing more。 Nothing less。 We are not here to judge others and their actions and label who is in the order of David or Saul。 I pray that I can be watchful in our own actions and motivation and live out the life of King David, a man after God’s own heart。 。。。more

This little tale is partly an inspiration for the pure-hearted who has been struggling in a congregation with a Saul or an Absalom, in order so that they can understand that they can be and act as a David。 It is very good and adds a dimension to the story that I'd never thought like this about。 It is very simple too, maybe too simple, but at the same time deep, maybe too deep? Anyway。 A great read!

Quite possibly one of the most challenging and encouraging books I’ve ever read。 Amazing for both followers and leaders to be encouraged but also broken by their own sin! A must read, a multiple times read, just read it okay

Theology at times kinda sketch, but the points he lands through the allegory are excellent。 Will definitely turn back to this book when I am in vocational ministry again。

Gut-wrenching, sobering, indispensable

very intriguing to read about the Saul—>David—>Absalom dynamic。 “God knows, but he never tells。” :)

Много хубава история, която те кара да се замислиш как ти самия постъпваш в дадена ситуация и какво трябва да направиш в друга。

A book for the ones who lost faith because of their religious situation or religious disposition in life, which admittedly where I was more than 10 years ago。 However, beginning to question everything (because you wanted to know God intimately) is the beginning of wisdom, and I started deeply questioning religions since 2008。 This book is for the ones who question。

Excellent book。 Gene Edwards is a great story teller that takes us through the required brokenness to be a leader after God’s heart。 This book challenged me to evaluate my heart and the motives behind everything that I do。

A Good book, which is a message transcription。 This book describes an illustrated view in the life of three different kings, where submission to Lord's will considered higher then using one's authority。 A Good book, which is a message transcription。 This book describes an illustrated view in the life of three different kings, where submission to Lord's will considered higher then using one's authority。 。。。more

I read this in the span of a hour and a half, and I had some good reflection on some of the things it brought up, but I was confused and didn’t really understand exactly what this was trying to teach。 There were some good points but I felt like there were a lot of half thought out passages。 Also, I do feel like books like these can do more harm than good。 If people aren’t familiar with Christianity, this could be misleading because creating a work of fiction with dialogue that didn’t actually ex I read this in the span of a hour and a half, and I had some good reflection on some of the things it brought up, but I was confused and didn’t really understand exactly what this was trying to teach。 There were some good points but I felt like there were a lot of half thought out passages。 Also, I do feel like books like these can do more harm than good。 If people aren’t familiar with Christianity, this could be misleading because creating a work of fiction with dialogue that didn’t actually exist between these biblical people could deceive and confuse people。 Even though I’m a Christian, I question if this author is actually trying to write works based off of the Bible or just use people from the Bible to push his own narrative。 。。。more

This book puts into perspective the reality of God’s anointing upon sinful man。 You will say “Amen。。 or oh me!”
