Summary

The latest novel in the beloved New York Times bestselling Longmire series finds the sheriff chasing down the whereabouts of an iconic American painting。

One of the most viewed paintings in American history, Custer's Last Fight, copied and distributed by Anheuser-Busch at a rate of over two million copies a year, was destroyed in a fire at the 7th Cavalry Headquarters in Fort Bliss, Texas, in 1946。 Or was it? When Charley Lee Stillwater dies of an apparent heart attack at the Wyoming Home for Soldiers & Sailors, Walt Longmire is called in to try and make sense of a piece of a painting and a Florsheim shoebox containing a million dollars, sending the good sheriff on the trail of a dangerous art heist。

My first Longmire mystery, and my first Craig Johnson novel; I really enjoyed it。 Attracted by the idea of a mystery set around a supposedly destroyed painting of Custer's Last Stand, the original event having occurred just across the state border from Longmire's county, I plunged in to "Next to Last Stand" with gusto。 I wasn't disappointed。 I find Johnson's writing style one that helps the reader to keep going, as we get deeper into Longmire's world with its regular characters, and the new ones My first Longmire mystery, and my first Craig Johnson novel; I really enjoyed it。 Attracted by the idea of a mystery set around a supposedly destroyed painting of Custer's Last Stand, the original event having occurred just across the state border from Longmire's county, I plunged in to "Next to Last Stand" with gusto。 I wasn't disappointed。 I find Johnson's writing style one that helps the reader to keep going, as we get deeper into Longmire's world with its regular characters, and the new ones pertinent to the story in question。 There's humour as well as action, yet neither are allowed to overwhelm the narrative。 They are just part of Walt Longmire's daily life as Sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming, as is his sidekick, Dog: "a big Saint Bernard/German Shepherd/dire wolf。" I decided I wanted a buddy just like him!So, as previously stated, my first Longmire mystery, but I'm certainly not expecting it to be my last。 。。。more
