This book is a great place to start for anyone looking to learn about investing (and no, you don't have to be a teacher)。 The instructions and explanations were easy to follow and I completely credit this well-written book with the start of my investment portfolio。 I couldn't have done it without the insightful advice。 Hallam also includes tips for investing in Canadian markets (as well as US and some international examples) and offers realistic examples to help the reader understand the concept This book is a great place to start for anyone looking to learn about investing (and no, you don't have to be a teacher)。 The instructions and explanations were easy to follow and I completely credit this well-written book with the start of my investment portfolio。 I couldn't have done it without the insightful advice。 Hallam also includes tips for investing in Canadian markets (as well as US and some international examples) and offers realistic examples to help the reader understand the concepts he is presenting in plain English。 This book should be taught to students in school, it's that good。 。。。more

I have read a few personal finance books, but this has been the best。 Concepts of savings/investing processes are written in a way that anyone can understand them。 It is not overly technical and lays out a very solid foundation of how anyone regardless of there income/background/current living situation can work towards investing for their future。 I would recommend individuals reading this when starting to look into there investing endeavours。

For me, this book was the spark that started the fire。The fire to be financially independent and be in control of my life and finances。 Before reading this book, I had never invested in the stock market since I thought that it was "the place where everyone loses money" - that being the wisdom of the culture and environment I grew up in。 The simple language and lucid writing style of the book helped a newbie like me a lot。 The people who say the book sounds like a Vanguard commercial are missing For me, this book was the spark that started the fire。The fire to be financially independent and be in control of my life and finances。 Before reading this book, I had never invested in the stock market since I thought that it was "the place where everyone loses money" - that being the wisdom of the culture and environment I grew up in。 The simple language and lucid writing style of the book helped a newbie like me a lot。 The people who say the book sounds like a Vanguard commercial are missing the point。 And the point is to get started with investing in the stock market, as early as possible。 Once you do your due diligence, you will see why Vanguard is in its enviable position right now。Six years and a lot of discipline and planning later, I am in a much better position - no debt, own my own place, no mortgage, a strong portfolio。 I live within my means and am happy with my life。 If you are a newbie to the stock market, or have just started your job, or are a few years in - understand that the earlier you start investing, the higher are your chances of a good retirement。 There might be other books in this category to get you started。 If you can't find one, I recommend this one。Who knows? For you, this book could be the spark that will start the fire。 :) 。。。more

This was a good introduction to investing in ETFs。 It started off slow with some stock financial advice like never buy a new car, save money, and pay down loans, but the back half of the book was great。 Easy to read and follow, but full of valuable insights。

I don't know much about the economy or money, but I appreciate the sensible and practical approach in the book。 It's definitely better than some financial advisors I've encountered who tried to pressure me into signing something。 I don't like being bullied into signing things so I quite literally run away every time。I think it's too early for me to say any more。 If I'm a millionaire in a few decades, I'll come back and give this five stars。 If not, it's one star。 :) I don't know much about the economy or money, but I appreciate the sensible and practical approach in the book。 It's definitely better than some financial advisors I've encountered who tried to pressure me into signing something。 I don't like being bullied into signing things so I quite literally run away every time。I think it's too early for me to say any more。 If I'm a millionaire in a few decades, I'll come back and give this five stars。 If not, it's one star。 :) 。。。more

Great book explaining the concepts of wealth and investing。 Goes over the importance of implementing easy and effective investment methods by having a portfolio made up of low-cost index ETFs and bonds。

Natesh Iyer

Very interesting book which explains and motivates people to save and invest wisely。 His reasoning and explanation goes a long way for people to make wise financial investment。It is a must read, the most interesting part was where he says always buy second hand cars and do not buy guzzlers, extremely wise。。。

Bonnie J

The book contains some interesting anecdotes but this book could have been much shorter。

Kylah Brianne

Good read。 Goes into detail on investing

Landon

Super informative and easy to read。

A good book that drills home a single message: buy low-cost ETFs。

Great bookThis was a no nonsense course in investing。 It shows that knowledge is power and investing isn’t something that only some people can figure out。 Do your due diligence and your own research。 And, if it sounds too good to be true-you are correct!

Jill Waddell

A must-read for anyone looking to build some financial literacy。

Lance

Easy accessible entry level financial advance mostly centering around the goal of building a portfolio of index funds and bonds。 Readable boring stuff。

Laura Stevenson

This was a quick read。 I found it got repetitive; "index and bond funds out perform actively managed mutual funds。 Here is a quote and a graph to demonstrate"。 It gave me some things to think about in terms of my investment strategy。 This was a quick read。 I found it got repetitive; "index and bond funds out perform actively managed mutual funds。 Here is a quote and a graph to demonstrate"。 It gave me some things to think about in terms of my investment strategy。 。。。more

Just finished reading this book and I absolutely love all the tips and stories。 The reading is so accessible and with easy and applicable ways。 I can’t wait to put it into practice!Lots of good references from different authors, experts, websites and reliable resources- and practical ways to get started or to be more strategic about our investments。 I am looking forward to putting it into practice and seeing the returns in 10-20 years!

A must read。 This book completely changed how we will be investing our money。 It explains daunting and seemingly complex financial terms in easy to understand ways, often with stories and examples。 And while many finance books are very US-centric, the author does cover other countries, including Canada。 Unfortunately there's no explanation of Canadian specific topics such as TFSAs and RRSPs, but the information here can easily be applied to how one invests and deals with their TFSAs and RRSPs。 I A must read。 This book completely changed how we will be investing our money。 It explains daunting and seemingly complex financial terms in easy to understand ways, often with stories and examples。 And while many finance books are very US-centric, the author does cover other countries, including Canada。 Unfortunately there's no explanation of Canadian specific topics such as TFSAs and RRSPs, but the information here can easily be applied to how one invests and deals with their TFSAs and RRSPs。 I'm so glad I read it! 。。。more

I consider myself to be quite financially illiterate so doing my very best to educate myself in this department。 I read that this book had Canadian examples so that enticed me to give this a read。I thought this book was very informative! It used empirical data to prove the value of investing in stock indexes。Very valuable content and will recommend!

A very simple concept, but powerful, the first chapter is the most important imo。The book talks way too much about why mutual funds are trash, that part could've been significantly less [we got the idea]。I recommend this book to anyone who hasn't realized the potential of compound interest。 The earlier you hop in, the better you'll be served。 A very simple concept, but powerful, the first chapter is the most important imo。The book talks way too much about why mutual funds are trash, that part could've been significantly less [we got the idea]。I recommend this book to anyone who hasn't realized the potential of compound interest。 The earlier you hop in, the better you'll be served。 。。。more

Summary: spend way less than you make (don't buy a new car), nobody beats the market forever, mutual funds incur too many fees that eat into profits, and low-fee index funds are king。 Summary: spend way less than you make (don't buy a new car), nobody beats the market forever, mutual funds incur too many fees that eat into profits, and low-fee index funds are king。 。。。more

This book easy to read and easy to apply! I read this book back in 2012, and started back then。 It did help, but I see now where I could have done better! Time is your friend, so start early! This book is great for complete beginners, but I'm sure can help those seasoned investors as well。 This book has helped both me and my older brother。 He seemed to soak in more of this knowledge than I did, but I look forward to making some changes and setting up my family for an even better future! Too technical for me。 Get ready for a lot of statistics talking and you can skip most of it。
