Summary

I cannot believe how much this book moved me。 Every single page was so eye opening and tragic and honest。 I appreciate Yeonmi so much for telling her story to the world。 I truly believe everyone should read this book。

A novel everyone should read。 Unbelievably eye opening and hard to read at times, Yeonmi has really done well at portraying the hard road that led her to freedom。 I love that she incorporates history In the book as well as it’s highly educational, particularly for myself as I knew next to nothing about North Korea。 Highly recommend and ultimately incredibly touching。 Lots of love for Yeonmi, what a strong and brave woman。

I didn't know much about North Korea before this and I think that's the point。 But Park's story is heartbreaking。 She tells about her life in North Korea and why they decided to escape。 Then she speaks on her life in China and the human trafficking that was happening。 I think this is a must read。 I really learned a lot and her story and others deserve to be heard。 If you haven't, definitely pick this one up。 I didn't know much about North Korea before this and I think that's the point。 But Park's story is heartbreaking。 She tells about her life in North Korea and why they decided to escape。 Then she speaks on her life in China and the human trafficking that was happening。 I think this is a must read。 I really learned a lot and her story and others deserve to be heard。 If you haven't, definitely pick this one up。 。。。more

The author, Yeonmi Park, reveals some important in sight about her time spent in North Korea。 The authors emphasis on her family, and does what's good for her and her family。 The author sets her work during her teenage years。 This is significant because it was the time when Yeonmi wanted to escape for a better life and future。 In my opinion, this novel shows how North Korea doesn't care about it's people。 To me it seems obvious that Yeonmi's family was struggling。 I feel the author was hoping to The author, Yeonmi Park, reveals some important in sight about her time spent in North Korea。 The authors emphasis on her family, and does what's good for her and her family。 The author sets her work during her teenage years。 This is significant because it was the time when Yeonmi wanted to escape for a better life and future。 In my opinion, this novel shows how North Korea doesn't care about it's people。 To me it seems obvious that Yeonmi's family was struggling。 I feel the author was hoping to show a better side but nothing about North Korea was great。 The character Yeonmi seemed to struggle with her childhood。 The character Yeonmi develops a better future in South Korea in the end。 。。。more

Heartbreaking, important memoir。 I've read a few North Korean escape memoirs and this one was well written and incredibly engaging。 The book emphasized the human trafficking and hunger aspects of the defectors more than others I've read。 Grateful to Yeonmi for sharing these details。 Heartbreaking, important memoir。 I've read a few North Korean escape memoirs and this one was well written and incredibly engaging。 The book emphasized the human trafficking and hunger aspects of the defectors more than others I've read。 Grateful to Yeonmi for sharing these details。 。。。more

Anyone who’s curious about the impact the North Korean regime(and the worlds response to it) has on its people should read this book。 It truly is one of the most harrowing and compelling memoirs I’ve read。

Yes, it's there is a history of inconsistencies in the telling of her story since she began her public speaking, but we are talking about someone who is telling the story of trauma in a language that is not her own。 In addition she is recalling childhood memories which very few people recall with the greatest of accuracy。 But even if a fraction of what she said is true, this is worth reading。 The awareness she has raised on the issue of human trafficking also makes this worth reading。I understan Yes, it's there is a history of inconsistencies in the telling of her story since she began her public speaking, but we are talking about someone who is telling the story of trauma in a language that is not her own。 In addition she is recalling childhood memories which very few people recall with the greatest of accuracy。 But even if a fraction of what she said is true, this is worth reading。 The awareness she has raised on the issue of human trafficking also makes this worth reading。I understand some of her opinions are quite problematic, extreme, and offensive, but that is not unusual for someone raised in the opposite extreme。 And it doesn't invalidate the trauma she's experienced。 。。。more

I couldn’t put this book down (though life got in the way and I did end up putting it down for a while)。 It was interesting and eye-opening。 It was about a North Korean defector who got out North Korea by unknowingly getting sold into a human trafficking circuit in China。 After time she and her mother get rescued by a Christian mission in China that gets people out of China via Mongolia and ultimately ending up in South Korea。 It’s a long and hard journey。 Once in South Korea they have to go thr I couldn’t put this book down (though life got in the way and I did end up putting it down for a while)。 It was interesting and eye-opening。 It was about a North Korean defector who got out North Korea by unknowingly getting sold into a human trafficking circuit in China。 After time she and her mother get rescued by a Christian mission in China that gets people out of China via Mongolia and ultimately ending up in South Korea。 It’s a long and hard journey。 Once in South Korea they have to go through a security and refuge center。 It’s there that you see the scales of brain washing start to come off and the NK defectors are slowly re-educated and learn what the rest of the world is like。 It was very interesting to hear the author’s thoughts and insecurities at this time and to see how screwed up NK truly caused their people to be。 North Korea really is a terribly oppressive country, this book shows that and is backed up by accounts from other defectors。 The author said her family did well at first due to her father’s black market operations, but even doing well in North Korea isn’t that great and comes with the threat of losing it all to despotic leaders。 Her father ends up in jail and they become just as dirt poor as other North Koreans。 There were parts I wondered about but in the end it was truly worth the read and is a story that should be shared。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Wow, this book was so incredible。 I honestly don't know what to write at the moment, because I am still processing it all。 So glad to have read it and am grateful to Ms。 Park for sharing her story with the world。 This calls for a reread soon, and I am eager to pick up more books about North Korea。 4。5 stars。 Wow, this book was so incredible。 I honestly don't know what to write at the moment, because I am still processing it all。 So glad to have read it and am grateful to Ms。 Park for sharing her story with the world。 This calls for a reread soon, and I am eager to pick up more books about North Korea。 。。。more

Eye opening, heart rending, hope inspiringA beautiful, though tragic and triumphant, life story。 I give glory to Jesus for Yeonmi and her victory over such evil beginnings。

Highly recommend! I love memoirs and this one did not disappoint。 I know very little about North Korea or the obstacles women (and girls) who attempt to leave North Korea face。 I found this both captivating and very informative!

It’s rare that you read a book, and it changes you forever。 This was that book and I’m forever grateful for it。

Tahira Maria

A heroine story that shines light into an unseen world of shame, with compassion and delicate honesty that elicits empathy and sympathy。 Although the author tells of a culture that lacks and forbids emotional expression, her words emit powerful emotions in a language she taught herself。 I’m grateful she found the courage to tell the whole truth without holdback。 Her pursuit for freedom grants others permission to do the same。 I pray all the best for her。

Heartbreaking and moving。 Yeonmi bravely shares her story, which must be incredibly difficult to recount。 While it is a story of horror, sadness, and loss, it is also an important story of courage, resilience, and hope。

Where do I begin? An amazing memoir representing the horrors are experienced by so many。 This story highlights the crimes of sex trafficking and the oppression of those living in fear within a communist country。

I’ve watched many documentaries on North Korea before because it seemed like a very mysterious country and I’ve come across many videos of Yeonmi Park on YouTube talking about her escape from North Korea。 Decided to read this as I watched a video of her mentioning this book。 I’m glad I read it because reading the hardship she went through was such a different experience than listening to her say it。 This is definitely such an eye opening book and I urge everyone to read it。 I cried so much readi I’ve watched many documentaries on North Korea before because it seemed like a very mysterious country and I’ve come across many videos of Yeonmi Park on YouTube talking about her escape from North Korea。 Decided to read this as I watched a video of her mentioning this book。 I’m glad I read it because reading the hardship she went through was such a different experience than listening to her say it。 This is definitely such an eye opening book and I urge everyone to read it。 I cried so much reading one section of the book。 I would love to know more about her struggles being in America as well because I’m sure she must’ve gone through her struggles being an immigrant and learning English。 I hope she releases a second book。 Overall, I hope to be as confident, brave and strong as Yeonmi ❤️ 。。。more

This is a really inspiring/horrifying/disturbing story of how a young North Korean girl was able to make her way to South Korea and freedom。 The monumental selfishness of the dictators of North Korea is truly amazing。 It is worse than 1984/The Animal Farm in real life with its mind control over the country's citizens。 The suffering that Ms。 Park and others like her endure in North Korea is terrible and escape through China is certainly an ordeal in itself。 Those Chinese who "help" them are human This is a really inspiring/horrifying/disturbing story of how a young North Korean girl was able to make her way to South Korea and freedom。 The monumental selfishness of the dictators of North Korea is truly amazing。 It is worse than 1984/The Animal Farm in real life with its mind control over the country's citizens。 The suffering that Ms。 Park and others like her endure in North Korea is terrible and escape through China is certainly an ordeal in itself。 Those Chinese who "help" them are human traffickers。I gave the book three stars because I was glad when it was done。 。。。more

While it seems that the evil of North Korea is a common knowledge awareness, it is important to understand they impact on a country when communism is the way of government。 This book was very difficult to listen to, but important。 Yeonmi's story of self-preservation, healing and ultimately being able to help others is extraordinary。 This should also be a warning tale for those that believe big government (who allegedly has the best interest of the population in mind) is a dangerous proposition。S While it seems that the evil of North Korea is a common knowledge awareness, it is important to understand they impact on a country when communism is the way of government。 This book was very difficult to listen to, but important。 Yeonmi's story of self-preservation, healing and ultimately being able to help others is extraordinary。 This should also be a warning tale for those that believe big government (who allegedly has the best interest of the population in mind) is a dangerous proposition。Silencing, Cancel Culture, among other things lead the population towards where N Korea was。 If the population is censored, under the illusion of kindness, where does that lead the population? This should show the evil that can exist when the population is silenced and the lengths to which a family will go to be free。 Let us never allow this to happen in the US。 。。。more

Yeonmi is very good at showing the good, the bad and the ugly。 Even in the worst situations she finds a way to keep moving, a reason to live。 As a person who hasn’t lived through much adversity, even I can empathize and understand her decisions。 I am glad that she had the courage to write this book and also showing the parts of herself that she isn’t as proud of。 I find that this way of revealing truths about the world even more effective than journalism in a way because it goes in depth in the Yeonmi is very good at showing the good, the bad and the ugly。 Even in the worst situations she finds a way to keep moving, a reason to live。 As a person who hasn’t lived through much adversity, even I can empathize and understand her decisions。 I am glad that she had the courage to write this book and also showing the parts of herself that she isn’t as proud of。 I find that this way of revealing truths about the world even more effective than journalism in a way because it goes in depth in the individual’s thoughts and emotions and I find it easier to connect with then a news report。 We do need both but I think stories like this are crucial。 。。。more
