Summary

The Dark Multiverse is coming, and nothing will ever be the same! Now in paperback, one of the biggest events in DC history is here in the shocking, action-packed epic Dark Nights: Metal from critically acclaimed author Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, reuniting after their smash-hit Batman series。

Beyond our universe, there is the Multiverse 。。。 and beneath the Multiverse is a nightmare realm where every fear that has ever been felt on our Earth becomes reality。 Now an evil force as old as time wants to drag us down into the shadows, into the realm of never-ending terror。

But when the door between worlds opens, it's not just any nightmares that come spilling out。 They call themselves the Dark Knights。 Each one is a twisted version of Batman from a world where one of his worst fears has come true。

With the invasion underway and Batman trapped in the Dark Multiverse, the Justice League must undergo an impossible quest to find the mysterious metals capable of repelling the Dark Knights and their master, the fearsome Barbatos。 If they fail, everything they've ever known will be plunged into eternal darkness。 But the true horror is。。。what if they're already too late?

Collects the best-selling Dark Nights: Metal #1-6, and now with bonus issues, Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt #1 and Batman Lost #1。

The ending makes it too ambitious not to love a little bit。 It brings our heros together in a religious experience next to over-the-top power metal (intentional description) that is too easy not to laugh at。 You have to。 It's ridiculous。 Besides that, it's a giant comic event。 Over stuffed, expository dumping ground, but entertaining nonetheless。 The ending makes it too ambitious not to love a little bit。 It brings our heros together in a religious experience next to over-the-top power metal (intentional description) that is too easy not to laugh at。 You have to。 It's ridiculous。 Besides that, it's a giant comic event。 Over stuffed, expository dumping ground, but entertaining nonetheless。 。。。more

It was fun and full with emotions, tense and adventurous, with enough small twists to stay interesting。 It might be hard to keep track at some parts, but it is understandable for most of it。 The art is fine, but I didn’t find it impressive, considering the previous work in Dark Knights Rising。 The overall message is nice, and I loved Clark and Diana’s personalities and attitudes。 The end was not as enticing as Dark Knights Rising but it was kinda wholesome。

Tim Armstrong

YuckGiving this a star because Electric Superman makes an appearance and that rocks!

I've been meaning to read this for 2 years now。 It has sat on my shelf for that long, as I quietly walked by it in shame。 But the time has come。 Was it good? It was okay, nothing that I am amazingly excited about but I am not really disappointed with either。 When the mood hits me I probably will pick up the rest of the volumes of the metal series to finish the story。 The story is a typical superhero tale。 All hope is lost but wait! First book into comics。 Really enjoyed the story。 Not the biggest fan of the story being told across different story arcs but i think that will just be something to get used to。

Three stars, mostly for the Greg Capullo art and a few good jokes, I love Scott Snyder as a writer but the story was convoluted and filled with way too many cameos。

3。5 starsA bit confusing at the end but quite epic story and gorgeous art

I thought I understood this story, but as I read more and more I lost more and more of the thread of the narrative。 I read this and all of Resistance and Dark Knights over a three day Labor Day weekend and I am still partially perplexed and confused by who did what and how they did it and what happened to this character or that character。 Quite honestly, I am just glad it is over。。。Oh well, I suppose I am a glutton for punishment。 On to DEATH METAL, may the Multi-verse forgive me。

According to the cover review, this is “The wackiest, craziest, most outright fun elements of the DC universe。”And I have to say I agree。 This story was absolutely bonkers。 But also pretty cool。 It’s the kind of story that takes some already out-there ideas (aka the multiverse) and stretches them to the extreme。 A dark multiverse with so many evil Batmen? I feel like a 2 star is probably more accurate, but there's enough enjoyment to nudge it up to 3 stars。I feel it is fortunate that I read the subsequent Justice League series of books before I read this Metal event because otherwise I would have said Scott Snyder is a dreadful writer and DC books are not good。 I truly love the books that foll0w on from this event, but wow, this is a mess。As I read this, after the initial stages of the book, it's telling me to catch up on stuff happening elsewher I feel like a 2 star is probably more accurate, but there's enough enjoyment to nudge it up to 3 stars。I feel it is fortunate that I read the subsequent Justice League series of books before I read this Metal event because otherwise I would have said Scott Snyder is a dreadful writer and DC books are not good。 I truly love the books that foll0w on from this event, but wow, this is a mess。As I read this, after the initial stages of the book, it's telling me to catch up on stuff happening elsewhere in the event that will help fill in the blanks。 It seems to really get anything out of this book, you'll need to read those books too! The villains, the evil Batmans, are just。。。 there。 They show up and act as typical enforcers for the main villain, who is The Batman Who Laughs。 He is definitely a highlight of the book and is the most enjoyable part of the villains。 The big bad, the Barbatos, looks cool, but just feels like a generic 'I am very evil' monster-man。Most of the story is just 'stuff'。 Stuff is happening, followed by more stuff。 None of it seems to matter, nothing feels important。 The stakes just feel hollow, because zero character development comes from this book。 The character who seemed to get the most development was bloody Detective Chimp, of all characters, and that was probably from James Tynion IV for use in Justice League: Dark。 *spoilers*Many of the characters are just 'there', but barely do anything。 Plastic Man gets this big build up that amounts to absolutely nothing。 Black Adam shows up to fight Wonder Woman but is defeated in an instant。 Starro shows up to stop Hal using his ring for a bit and then gets taken out off panel。 By a joke no less (befitting the character, I suppose)。 Towards the end the dark universes start to merge and all these twisted dark versions of characters show up, including a Cheetah Wonder Woman who features prominently。 And Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl alone manage to fight them all until later other characters eventually show up。 So these two were able to defeat several versions of themselves and others alone? Just。。。 why write it this way? Kendra shows up at the beginning of the story, apparently a new person to everyone else but they all instantly accept everything she says, including her being an immortal that reincarnates, without a single question or bat of an eye and she's immediately part of the team and best buds。 Then there's the "53rd dimension" where they were keeping alternate Batmans and Detective Chimps。。。 why? Why were they being kept there instead of being put to use? The excuse is to protect them from the dark。。。 why not put more there to protect them? Why was that place able to protect them? Where did it even come from since everyone says there's only 52 versions? Why was it just full of Batman and Detective Chimps? Why didn't they all come sooner and maybe they should have stopped everything beforehand!? It's just dumb! And how do they win in the end? Shiny, shiny, shiny armour that looks like rejected props from the old Camelot movie。 They look goofy and silly and they use it to magically put everything back again but, OOPS, put a hole in the Source Wall。 They broke the Source Wall。。。 by accident。 So the big thing that sets off the subsequent Justice League books was。。。 an oopsie。That artwork by Capullo is all over the place。 Oftentimes it does look amazing。。。 but there are panels were it looks really bad。 The very first panel in the volume looks dreadful。Overall, not a good book compared to the later material。 I am glad I started reading DC with the next books, but I can say at least I wasn't bored reading this。 Just rolling my eyes a lot。 。。。more

I read the 4 collected editions in the recommended reading order (going back and forth between books) and it was still hard to follow。 I liked it (did not live it but enjoyed some aspects of it), especially the last issue so I ended with a very positive opinion, but at times I felt like a college art student who walked-in by mistake in an advanced science lecture。。。I loved the premise of a Dark Multiverse and the batmen villains (and their origin stories) thanks to which it is really entertainin I read the 4 collected editions in the recommended reading order (going back and forth between books) and it was still hard to follow。 I liked it (did not live it but enjoyed some aspects of it), especially the last issue so I ended with a very positive opinion, but at times I felt like a college art student who walked-in by mistake in an advanced science lecture。。。I loved the premise of a Dark Multiverse and the batmen villains (and their origin stories) thanks to which it is really entertaining。 The designs and art are wonderful too。 But why are the technicalities made so complicated? Most of us would be perfectly fine with less how and why and more story (evil Batmen should be plenty of fun and nightmares to work with already without I don't know how many metals, songs and other "scientific" elements)。。。 I guess you have to read all the other Crisis to understand better (the chimps?) ? Or not。。。 It is too much, even for long-time readers。And by the way I had read the Geof Johns' Hawkman run, but there was nothing about his apparently life work investigation on the matter, or on the Birds people as far as I remember (which I had an idea about because I read the Return of Bruce Wayne (in full, not the single issue collectes in the Road to Metal book))。The heroes make so many back and forth attemps that don't achieve much (especially when the last and very good issue felt much more straightforward than you would have imagined after all that happened)。 Really it would gain a lot to be simplified overall and rely more of the badass designs and action scenes。 I was all into it up to the end of the first 4 issues cross-over in Gotham's labyrinth, then I got lost in the references, jump between places and dimensions etc。 But as I said, the excitement came back with the last issue。I read most of Rebirth titles of 2015-2017 and I had no idea that Mr。 Terrific was still active, that Plastic Man was in an egg, why Green Lanterns Simon and Jessica are not part of the event at all (being off planet is not a reason, this is a universe wide threat) etc。 Rather than random issues from past events that are not suitable stand-alone issues AT ALL (The Return of Bruce Wayne, End Game, Final Crisis) I wish that the Road To Metal book set the background and bridge from ongoing Rebirth titles better, so that we may enjoy this event more。 There is undoubtedly a lot of work and thinking behind everything, maybe too much, and some of it fail to reach even an attentive reader。I will give it another try if they publish an Omnibus, probably after a deep refresh of previous Crisis and Morrison run or Snyder mythos。Next, I will read No Justice and Snyder's JL run。 。。。more

I don't think super heroes lend themselves to any sort of middle-of-the-road approach。 You either have to approach them with earnestness, or hit it with the most over-the-top silliness that you possess。 Scott Snyder's seems to regularly go for the bonkers approach。 This is the writer that replaced Batman with Jim Gordon in a weird robot for a while。 And the forward suggests that this whole premise was a shot in the dark for them that happened to work out。 Finding sacred metal armor and weapons t I don't think super heroes lend themselves to any sort of middle-of-the-road approach。 You either have to approach them with earnestness, or hit it with the most over-the-top silliness that you possess。 Scott Snyder's seems to regularly go for the bonkers approach。 This is the writer that replaced Batman with Jim Gordon in a weird robot for a while。 And the forward suggests that this whole premise was a shot in the dark for them that happened to work out。 Finding sacred metal armor and weapons to fight a team of the most evilist Batmen ever is definitely pretty over the top, but the artwork helps sell the absurdity。 It still suffers a bit from the problems most of these mega-events have: in trying to tackle the most massive awe inspiring events, they usually end up tearing off more than they can chew。 Many events by DC and Marvel end up with characters simply explaining the epic, world-shattering events half the time, because fully demonstrating these things would take too much time and too much artist effort to render。 (Worth noting that this is kind of an American thing。 One Punch Man will spend 20 pages on a really cool explosion。) It usually leaves me feeling like I read a really compelling explanation of an amazing story。And Dark Metal shows instead of tells more than most, pulling off a fair share of what it sets out to do。 There are strange conspiracies, weird monsters, and some of the oddest visuals I've seen in a mainstream Batman comic。The villains definitely do a lot of heavy lifting in the best books in the Metal series。 Beyond The Batman Who Laughs, who may be one of the better DC villains in a generation, we get a cavalcade of ruined Batmen from failed timelines who are all awful is surprisingly distinct ways。 They are absolutely the stars of the show, and there's a reason DC gave them their own book and an entire standalone story just for The Batman Who Laughs。While it still falls prey to some Mega-Event problems, Dark Knights: Metal is a solid, entertaining read。 。。。more
