Summary

A grand vision defined: The CEO of The Walt Disney Company shares the ideas and values he has used to reinvent one of the most beloved companies in the world, and inspire the people who bring the magic to life。

In 2005, Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company during a difficult time。 Morale had deteriorated, competition was more intense, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company's history。 "I knew there was nothing to be gained from arguing over the past," Iger writes。 "The only thing that mattered was the future, and I believed I had a clear idea of the direction Disney needed to go。" It came down to three clear ideas: 1) Create the highest quality content Disney could produce。 2) Embrace and adopt technology instead of fighting it。 And 3) Think bigger--think global--and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets。

Twelve years later, Disney is the largest, most respected media company in the world counting Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox among its properties。 Its value is nearly five times what it was when Iger took over, and Iger is recognized as one of the most innovative and successful CEOs of our time。

Now, he's sharing the lessons he's learned while running Disney and leading its 200,000 employees--taking big risks in the face of historic disruption; learning to inspire the people who work for you; leading with fairness and communicating principles clearly。 This book is about the relentless curiosity that has driven Iger for forty-five years, since the day he started as a studio supervisor at ABC。 It's also about thoughtfulness and respect, and a decency-over-dollars approach that has become the bedrock of every project and partnership Iger pursues, from a deep friendship with Steve Jobs in his final years to an abiding love of the evolving Star Wars myth。

"Over the past fourteen years, I think I've learned so much about what real leadership is," Iger writes。 "But I couldn't have articulated all of this until I lived it。 You can't fake it--and that's one of the key lessons in this book。"

I really enjoyed reading this, but it was mostly because I love Disney and was fascinated by Iger’s insider perspective。 I learned a lot about Disney’s history and major moments over the last 20 or so years and I learned a little bit about management。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Very much enjoyed the read。 It is strongly comparable with Shoe Dog from the founder of Nike, only more focused on a CEO rather than Founder trajectory。It was nice to see a very personal side of Bob Iger and to get to know so much about the depth of his friendship with Steve Jobs。 Also, I was a big fan of him admitting that he cries。 The glorification of CEOs is not always healthy, and getting back a human touch from very "successful" people makes it easier to relate and be inspired。 Very much enjoyed the read。 It is strongly comparable with Shoe Dog from the founder of Nike, only more focused on a CEO rather than Founder trajectory。It was nice to see a very personal side of Bob Iger and to get to know so much about the depth of his friendship with Steve Jobs。 Also, I was a big fan of him admitting that he cries。 The glorification of CEOs is not always healthy, and getting back a human touch from very "successful" people makes it easier to relate and be inspired。 。。。more

The one quote I took out from this book adds confirmation to my positive personality:Often we lead from a place of fear rather than courage […] if you walk up and down the halls constantly telling people the sky is falling the sense of doom and gloom will over time permeate the company。 You can’t communicate pessimism to the people around you, it’s ruinous to morale。 No one wants to follow a pessimist。 Pessimism leads to paranoia which leads to defensiveness which leads to risk aversion。 Optimis The one quote I took out from this book adds confirmation to my positive personality:Often we lead from a place of fear rather than courage […] if you walk up and down the halls constantly telling people the sky is falling the sense of doom and gloom will over time permeate the company。 You can’t communicate pessimism to the people around you, it’s ruinous to morale。 No one wants to follow a pessimist。 Pessimism leads to paranoia which leads to defensiveness which leads to risk aversion。 Optimism emerges from faith in yourself and the ones who work for you, it’s not about saying things are good when they’re not and it’s not about conveying some blind faith that things will work out, it’s about believing in your and others abilities。 。。。more

An easy-to-follow story of professional achievements of someone who can be described as one of the most effective 'mercenary' CEOs of the recent decades。 This captivating narrative walks us through his first career steps starting within ABC, later at Capital Cities and then under the helm of The Walt Disney Company (with lots of details on Pixar, Marvel, LucasFilm and Fox acquisitions)。 Iger shares his learnings on 'true leadership':- optimism- courage- focus- decisiveness- curiosity- fairness- An easy-to-follow story of professional achievements of someone who can be described as one of the most effective 'mercenary' CEOs of the recent decades。 This captivating narrative walks us through his first career steps starting within ABC, later at Capital Cities and then under the helm of The Walt Disney Company (with lots of details on Pixar, Marvel, LucasFilm and Fox acquisitions)。 Iger shares his learnings on 'true leadership':- optimism- courage- focus- decisiveness- curiosity- fairness- thoughtfulness- authenticity- the relentless pursuit of perfection- integrity。Above else what stems from this story is the importance of reading well the right people, establishing key relationships with the right degree of straigtforwardness and navigating with a crystal clear set of priorities (max 3)。 For him stepping in as Disney's CEO it was: i) high quality of content; ii) use of technology to redefine distribution & business models; and iii) global reach。The only thing arguable is the style - it feels at times condescending and to-the-bone self-centered。 At the same time, one needs to have an ego to achieve what Iger already achieved。。。 。。。more

Tbh, I read this because it is one of bill gates recommendation in his website。 But when i started reading it, it really appalled me。 I'm not good at writing a complete review about a book, but I would recommend this book for everyone, especially for all working of working professionals out there。 Not because this book told a "success" story of a man, but rather to show that to achieve a long lasting "success" you will have to add more considerations into things that can't be quantify。 Tbh, I read this because it is one of bill gates recommendation in his website。 But when i started reading it, it really appalled me。 I'm not good at writing a complete review about a book, but I would recommend this book for everyone, especially for all working of working professionals out there。 Not because this book told a "success" story of a man, but rather to show that to achieve a long lasting "success" you will have to add more considerations into things that can't be quantify。 。。。more

I genuinely enjoyed this more than I thought I would。 I learned more about Iger’s history and character。 He imparted some good lessons and insights through his words。

A compact, easily digestible autobiographical book on leadership that is well worth reading。 Most of these books are best used as dippers - to get ideas from, this is worth reading cover to cover and there are some inspirational ones in it

Awesome read。 I love a leader who puts empathy and respect above all, and the stories and takeaways Iger highlights sure suggest that those are values he holds close。 Whizzed through this one in a day because the stories were compelling, the pages were full of wisdom, and Disney is just cool。

Bob Iger did a phenomenal jobs of telling his rise from ABC to running the conglomerate that is Disney。 I really enjoyed how candid and opened he was about each high and low he experienced and who he experienced it with。 The breakdown of how he acquired Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm were just incredible。 I highly recommend this book to anyone interested to seeing the rise of Disney。

It was an excellent book, unveiling what is to be in a Leadership position, how many challenges have to faced, how the ego game takes place as well, also provides good tips but not in the common way。。。 this is the list of things you should do but more, this is my story he shares what it worked for him and the effect that it has。 Highky recommended。

Solid career advice。 Mostly generic stuff about leadership。 I really enjoyed hearing about the Pixar merger with Steve Jobs。

It's the kind of books I used to avoid for the title and cover related to pop and self-improvement。 But, man, I'm interested in anything involving Mickey。 It is a good book that 65% of the content tells the life of Robert Iger, and the rest provides important information on how to lead a team。The most illustrative phrase for me:"It's funny how everything connects to everything, from one person to another, from job to job。 The progression of the story is coherent from beginning to end。" It's the kind of books I used to avoid for the title and cover related to pop and self-improvement。 But, man, I'm interested in anything involving Mickey。 It is a good book that 65% of the content tells the life of Robert Iger, and the rest provides important information on how to lead a team。The most illustrative phrase for me:"It's funny how everything connects to everything, from one person to another, from job to job。 The progression of the story is coherent from beginning to end。" 。。。more

When you work for the company you saw the tide turn against Michael Eisner from a cast member & fan perspective by this was interesting to read how it all happened from a Board of Directors & COO perspective。 I went through the transition of Eisner to Iger so this was nice to see a perspective from the side of the company that we don't see or know much about。 When you work for the company you saw the tide turn against Michael Eisner from a cast member & fan perspective by this was interesting to read how it all happened from a Board of Directors & COO perspective。 I went through the transition of Eisner to Iger so this was nice to see a perspective from the side of the company that we don't see or know much about。 。。。more

This book is a great read for me for a number of reasons:1) I love the humility that Robert Iger showed throughout the book, even when he was at the peak of the corporate ladder。2) The writing was raw and candid。 3) The book talks about Disney‘s strategic acquisitions of several companies - I worked on legal M&A for a year previously, but had always felt like I didn’t get to understand the business processes surrounding M&A。 This book talked quite a bit about the thinking processes behind acquis This book is a great read for me for a number of reasons:1) I love the humility that Robert Iger showed throughout the book, even when he was at the peak of the corporate ladder。2) The writing was raw and candid。 3) The book talks about Disney‘s strategic acquisitions of several companies - I worked on legal M&A for a year previously, but had always felt like I didn’t get to understand the business processes surrounding M&A。 This book talked quite a bit about the thinking processes behind acquisitions, the negotiations and the potential issues that may arise post-acquisitions - all these filled in a lot of gaps for me and those chapters are really fascinating! 。。。more
