Summary

The assassins of Barry Eisler’s #1 bestseller The Killer Collective are back—and this time, it’s chaos。

Assistant US Attorney Alondra Diaz hates traffickers。 And she’s determined to put one of America’s most powerful financiers, Andrew Schrader, in prison forever for his crimes against children。

But Schrader has videos implicating some of the most powerful members of the US national security state。 To eliminate Diaz, the powers that be bring in a contractor: Marvin Manus, an implacable assassin whose skills have been forged in intelligence, the military, and the hardest prisons。

Enter former Marine sniper Dox and black-ops veteran Daniel Larison with an unusual assignment: not to kill Diaz, but to keep her alive。

A lot of players are determined to acquire the videos and the blackmail power they represent。 But with Seattle sex-crimes detective Livia Lone, “natural causes” killer John Rain, and ex-Mossad honey-trap specialist Delilah, the good guys might just have a chance。

They’re not going to play by anyone else’s rules。 They’re not going to play by any rules at all。 They want a different kind of fight。 The chaos kind。

The book is an espionage plot and the author skips around and the characters are confusing。 The idea is good, but it is overly repetitive and confusing。 I finished 1/2 of the book and gave up when a new agent was introduced and the plot got more involved。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Another great story! I miss Rain being in the forefront, but I can’t imagine it is easy weaving all these stories together。 I find myself wanting to read more about Larison。 It also makes me excited to read some of the other books to get the backstory。 I’m happy that there will be a sequel。 I also hope Mannus is going to be in it! Overall very enjoyable listen。 Eisler does such a good job with the character voices。

Excellent writer。 Plot weel thought out。 The ending seemed a bit rushed。 Chapters set to each character making style much like Peter James which I also enjoy。 Really liked the Doax and Larrison characters。

Barry Eisler’s The Chaos Kind – if you are looking for an edge of your seat, character driven read, this book will be your jam。 For those of us who are die-hard Eisler fans, this one ranks in my top five (see my previous reviews to see 1-4)。 With the Chaos Kind the guys and gals are back in town。 There is Dox, that Texas giant with a lethal trigger finger who happens to have an incurable crush on a Livia, the hardened Seattle cop with a penchant for enacting revenge with a Ninja-like stealth。 Th Barry Eisler’s The Chaos Kind – if you are looking for an edge of your seat, character driven read, this book will be your jam。 For those of us who are die-hard Eisler fans, this one ranks in my top five (see my previous reviews to see 1-4)。 With the Chaos Kind the guys and gals are back in town。 There is Dox, that Texas giant with a lethal trigger finger who happens to have an incurable crush on a Livia, the hardened Seattle cop with a penchant for enacting revenge with a Ninja-like stealth。 There is Larison, the muscle with a secret that requires him to comport himself as the Angel of Death。 And there is their fearless leader Rain, the lethal assassin so adept at his trade his victim’s deaths are recorded as natural when they are far from it and -rounding out the lethal band is Delilah, John’s ex-Mossad girlfriend who makes the term femme fatale sound tame。 This is the Killer Collective。They morph into the Chaos Kind when they band together to stop the release of some politically damaging videos。 Adding to the Collective is Manus, the hearing-impaired hitman who wields a blade so threatening his victims are rendered incapable of retort and Evie, Maya and Kazenski each with unique skills that make the Collective seem almost domesticated。Eisler departs from his darker prose and infuses humor that is not only hilarious, but so apropos。 There is a stereotype busting scene involving Dox and Larison that is not only adorable, but socially conscience。 And only Eisler could seamlessly weave in a dog named Frodo, a horse named Margarita and a yellow Porsche GTS。 Believe me, it is so nonsensical it works。For Rain fans, there will be far too little of him, but for Dox fans it’s the all Dox all the time show and although I missed Rain, Dox’s humor and compassion is so infectious you recall his first encounter with Rain, and you remember why you’ve loved him from the beginning。 I still have not warmed up to Livia and apparently neither has Delilah。 I will not spoil the plot, I will say Eisler does pass the Bechdel test, but only by a hair。 For me, Larison has always been my least favorite character, after Livia, but the scenes between he and Dox are a counterpoint to their combined lethality and when you toss Manus into the mix it’s a triumvirate of brutality tampered down by their fierce loyalty to and protection of those they love。 Think Dom’s “family”! And add in a Ring metaphor and you have got a quasi-epic quest that warms the heart and thrills the spirit。TD highly recommends。 。。。more

It's been quite a while since I read a Barry Eisler book after being disappointed with the last one that I read after having really enjoyed the previous books (sorry for the horribly run-on sentence。)The Chaos Kind was fun and while I would not call it wonderful, it was an enjoyable read since the plot was very twisty, quite interesting and introduced some very cleverly developed new characters in addition to keeping many of the old standbys (Damn, another horribly written run-on sentence, sorry It's been quite a while since I read a Barry Eisler book after being disappointed with the last one that I read after having really enjoyed the previous books (sorry for the horribly run-on sentence。)The Chaos Kind was fun and while I would not call it wonderful, it was an enjoyable read since the plot was very twisty, quite interesting and introduced some very cleverly developed new characters in addition to keeping many of the old standbys (Damn, another horribly written run-on sentence, sorry)。An Assistant US Attorney has charged an extraordinarily wealthy man with a series of crimes, some of which involve children。 Livia Lone, detective, and Dox, sniper, of previous Eisler books, discover that her life is in peril and come to the rescue。 Extraordinary details about the crimes begin to come to the surface and it turns out that some very powerful people, many of whom are inside the Federal Government, are involved。 Eisler's old standby, John Rain, is asked for assistance and he reluctantly joins Livia, Dox and assorted others。 Chaos ensues but in a rather enjoyable way。Eisler fans will almost certainly, very much enjoy this book as will those who enjoy a complex, twisty, somewhat convoluted plot with a fair share of action。Over and Out 。。。more

I enjoyed this Barry Eisler thriller more than its predecessor "The Killer Collective" and that is possibly because I needed to get to know the characters in the prior novel in order to enjoy them even more in this one。 (Note to self: when all of the reviews are telling you to read the series in order, I should listen to them!) This novel has elements of The Avengers and maybe The Magnificent Seven (minus the fabulous Elmer Bernstein score!) The team gets back together again (with some new additions) to help a dedicated prosecutor with her quixotic campaign to end a powerful child sex ring a la Jeffrey Epstein。 The series started around the lead character, an assassin named John Rain。 Frankly, I found him to be the least interesting of our heroes。 My fav once again was Dox, who is kind of like Spenser (of the Robert Parker series) except that Dox is not exactly a do-good Private Eye。 Instead he's a sharp shooting sniper (well, nobody's perfect。) But he's an equally enjoyable wisecracking personality and adores his romantic interest as much as Spenser loves Susan。 Be warned there's a lot of violence and in my view a little too much attention to details about weapons used (I get that the author likes authenticity but my eyes kind of glazed over the types of guns, knives etc。) The plot moves swiftly and what it lacks in believability it makes up in good writing。 Added bonus for me were the many references to Japan and Japanese culture/history (I attended some High School near Kobe, the author lived and worked in Japan。) I'm going to pay more attention to the First Reads choices going forward, this was a good one I might not have found otherwise。 。。。more

A pretty good action adventure but the characters are getting a little old。 Story line is great with interesting twists and a little frightening as it mimics current apparent corruption in our current DOJ is revealed。

Skill and experience beats the evil bad guys in the end。Do I g w hat is right for the right reasons keep friends stepping up to cover your back。 Hit men calling in favors to keep the innocent alive and kill those out to harm them, does not get in the way of all the action。 Enjoy the ride。

If you haven't been following the series, it will be almost impossible to appreciate most of the characters。 If you have been following the series the key players are back for another audacious spectacle of coordinated fire power and killing expertise。 There is also the introduction of several other players who could show up in future stories。 And even if they don't, they were exceptionally fine additions to the crew。Barry Eisler writes action thrillers as well as anyone writing today。 His comma If you haven't been following the series, it will be almost impossible to appreciate most of the characters。 If you have been following the series the key players are back for another audacious spectacle of coordinated fire power and killing expertise。 There is also the introduction of several other players who could show up in future stories。 And even if they don't, they were exceptionally fine additions to the crew。Barry Eisler writes action thrillers as well as anyone writing today。 His command of how National Security operates, from the CIA to the DNI, from the NSA to the rapidly changing importance of digital acumen in defending the country from threats foreign and domestic is frightening。 As the series progresses he keeps his storylines relevant。 In The Chaos Kind the story parallels the Jeffrey Epstein debacle from several years back。 Powerful men caught up in a web of debauchery and abuse of underage girls。 Naturally, Livia Lone, the Seattle Sex Crimes Detective, has been on a mission to punish anyone involved no matter how up the food chain they are。Each episode also further humanizes the killers in his stories making it harder and harder to see them as anything other than operatives doing the government's business。 Not killers without a conscience。 Not people without morals or compassion。 In this story there is more a sense of friendship and partnership as members of this collective reveal the more human sides of themselves。If any of this sounds interesting start at the beginning with the John Rain series and introduce yourselves to these remarkable men and women。 Read the Livia Lone series to get an understanding of the depth of her feelings。 You won't be able to put any of Eisler's stories down。 。。。more

Overall Good Action NovelGenerally, this was a good read。 The characters are intense and interesting, and there were some new ones thrown in。 At times, it did feel too long and unnecessarily complex。 I would read the next book in the series, but felt the ending had a few holes that should have been closed based on the length of the book。
