Summary

"But you do," he went on, not waiting for contradiction。 "You love the boy body and soul, plainly, directly, as he loves you, and no other word expresses it 。。。"

Lucy has her rigid, middle-class life mapped out for her until she visits Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte, and finds her neatly ordered existence thrown off balance。 Her eyes are opened by the unconventional characters she meets at the Pension Bertolini: flamboyant romantic novelist Eleanor Lavish, the Cockney Signora, curious Mr Emerson and, most of all, his passionate son George。

Lucy finds herself torn between the intensity of life in Italy and the repressed morals of Edwardian England, personified in her terminally dull fiancé Cecil Vyse。 Will she ever learn to follow her own heart?

***3。5**The first part of the book that takes place in Italy felt really short and didn’t meet my expectations。 The second half is much better in regards to the interactions between characters and sympathizing with Lucy and the story。 I really admire Lucy’s character growth。 Overall, I think maybe the movie will translate better for me。。

Comparing this to Middlemarch, I find this writing style so clear and beautiful but I didn't feel the need to stop and think what the author meant。 I enjoyed the movie and enjoyed the book! Only downer was the end where basically the family and friends are all against the main couple's marriage。 That's really kind of annoying, especially because their love was all bloomed from a kiss。 But the commentary on the changing standards of England was still a great backdrop to the story。 Also enjoyed th Comparing this to Middlemarch, I find this writing style so clear and beautiful but I didn't feel the need to stop and think what the author meant。 I enjoyed the movie and enjoyed the book! A young English girl yields to a man in a moment of passion, then later on has to struggle with the question of whether she should admit to that passion further down the road, or go ahead and marry the man she's engaged to who but for whom she has no passion whatsoever。 If you want to know which she decides, you just have to read the book。 A young English girl yields to a man in a moment of passion, then later on has to struggle with the question of whether she should admit to that passion further down the road, or go ahead and marry the man she's engaged to who but for whom she has no passion whatsoever。 If you want to know which she decides, you just have to read the book。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Overall, I enjoyed this book。 I think that it has a lot of reflections and life lessons that are still relevant today。 I wish that book was longer and took more time to explain how Cecil and Lucy's relationship developed in Rome。 Overall, I enjoyed this book。 I think that it has a lot of reflections and life lessons that are still relevant today。 I wish that book was longer and took more time to explain how Cecil and Lucy's relationship developed in Rome。 。。。more

This is such a wonderful book, I truly couldn't stop smiling as I read it。 Forster's writing is incredibly poetic as he describes feelings, thoughts, and scenery。 His imagery never ceasing to be majestic。 This is such a wonderful book, I truly couldn't stop smiling as I read it。 Forster's writing is incredibly poetic as he describes feelings, thoughts, and scenery。 His imagery never ceasing to be majestic。 。。。more

A Room with a View has certain kind of humor that kind of works。 It has a shallow main character who gains depth and color too slowly and too gradually。 It also has a plot so mellow it's a good thing the book is rather short。In my understanding A Room with a View is significant in describing a certain turn in social norms and expectations of how people from different classes and generations behave。 It brings an intriguing premise of big ideas clashing but fails to deliver by making the character A Room with a View has certain kind of humor that kind of works。 It has a shallow main character who gains depth and color too slowly and too gradually。 It also has a plot so mellow it's a good thing the book is rather short。In my understanding A Room with a View is significant in describing a certain turn in social norms and expectations of how people from different classes and generations behave。 It brings an intriguing premise of big ideas clashing but fails to deliver by making the characters representing those ideas cardboard and lifeless。 。。。more

There is so much to savour in this book on each reading。 Perfect。

2。5 stars I hate to say this for a classic, but I find with EM Forster’s novels the Mechant Ivory movie production versions are better than reading his books。 Towards the end of the novel there are some very beautifully written passages, but majority of the novel felt was stilted or anti- climatic。

The beginning of the book was kind of boring。 There was very little that happened; the first half of the book was just spent building the characters。 I liked the last 100 pages, where the book started to pick up the pace。

Review from April 2021:Apparently this is one of the books they read in The Office for the Finer Things Club? Anyways。 I was so excited for this book。 I was hoping for a better version of Letter to Juliet and I was sorely disappointed。 This was a slow, slow, SLOW start。 Once chapter 8 rolled around things got a little better。I couldn’t really get on board with Lucy and George’s relationship。 It seemed rushed to me and didn’t seem to have too much depth to it。 Like, when did they even fall in lov Review from April 2021:Apparently this is one of the books they read in The Office for the Finer Things Club? I didn't see it happen。Lucy’s brother was my favourite character, and I don't even remember his name, so that just goes to show how memorable this book has been for me。 I definitely need to give this a reread because I’ve seen so many people rave about it。 Maybe I didn't mesh too well with Forster's writing, and maybe the second time around it'll be better。 。。。more
