When Paige’s ex and his new fiancée come to her for their wedding cake, she wishes so badly that she was in a financial position to say no but isn’t and so she finds herself spiraling and in need of a distraction。 She seeks distraction in Noah who is supposed to be a bit of fun but there has been a bit of a “mix up” and Noah is not the no-strings sort she had mistaken him for, but is he the inspiration she didn’t realise she had needed? This story was warm and comforting and I really enjoyed it。

Good, and Noah was wonderful。 A great example of casual hookup evolving。 Really could have done with a better title though - the mix up is only brought up 200+ pages in, then resolved within 10 pages (a few hours for the characters)。 It would have been nice for that to have been a surprise and the story focuses on so many other interesting topics instead

A lovely easy read。 Enjoyable plot。

I really enjoyed reading this book。 I am a baker myself so a book about a baker written by a baker is an instant read for me。 😅However, while I enjoyed the lenghty descriptions of cake making, I understand why other people would be put off by it。 There are quite a lot of baking and decorating related paragraphs。There are also a lot of ideas that I genuinely resonate with, regarding baking, but also life in general。 I think Paige is my spirit animal, it feels like we share a brain。 Although she i I really enjoyed reading this book。 I am a baker myself so a book about a baker written by a baker is an instant read for me。 😅However, while I enjoyed the lenghty descriptions of cake making, I understand why other people would be put off by it。 There are quite a lot of baking and decorating related paragraphs。There are also a lot of ideas that I genuinely resonate with, regarding baking, but also life in general。 I think Paige is my spirit animal, it feels like we share a brain。 Although she is very independent in her life, I'm vrey much dependent on my husband in our small business。 So that's where we don't really match。 😁There is this one particular thing that happened to Paige that made her life take a different path than what she expected and I definitely liked how it was approached。 Her insecurities made a lot of sense。 I do wish there were more interactions between Paige and Noah, and less drama regarding her ex boyfriend。 I found myself wanting to know more about Noah, he seemed such a nice and uncomplicated man。 But we barely get a few details on his personality and life。Anyway, I liked this。 I'll definitely read more of Holly's books。 I read Just Friends a while back and enjoyed it as well。 。。。more

I absolutely adored this! A bit of a blind pick, I didn’t read the blurb before I started so I just had my own expectations based on the name and the cover。 The idea worked so well, and I don’t think I’ve ever been invested with anyone’s cake making as I have with Paige! Such an easy read (but I love an easy read) that had me thinking about the characters even when I wasn’t reading。 I loved Paige, hated her mum and enjoyed the relationships she had with the supporting characters。 More emotion th I absolutely adored this! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 There’s a lot of inner monologues/thoughts in the book which I found difficult to get through but I kept going, I found it confusing if she had cancer or her best friend did but once it cleared up I loved the plot, you definitely have to keep reading with this book but it gets better。

I kind of struggled with this book。 It started out strong, but the main character quickly lost what made her fun, and as the book went on, I got bored and frustrated with her flip-flopping。 I did enjoy the romantic lead's character but his behaviour at the end was a bit push-overy; I definitely wasn't rooting for the two of them by that point。 I can't say I really enjoyed this book, but I'll definitely try other ones by the same author :) I kind of struggled with this book。 It started out strong, but the main character quickly lost what made her fun, and as the book went on, I got bored and frustrated with her flip-flopping。 I did enjoy the romantic lead's character but his behaviour at the end was a bit push-overy; I definitely wasn't rooting for the two of them by that point。 I can't say I really enjoyed this book, but I'll definitely try other ones by the same author :) 。。。more

I’ve been reading some heavy books lately so I wanted my next read to be light。 I didn’t really have any expectations when I started reading this one but I finished it in 2 days。 It was so entertaining, funny, heart warming and it touched on some serious life issues。 Noah was such a sweetheart! What a beautiful story!

This was a very easy read - I did get frustrated at times with Paige’s character and Noah did seem too perfect at times。 I found myself craving food when reading this as there are some great descriptive passages around pancakes, cake and savoury treats。 I enjoyed the humour used by the author and would read more of her books。

This was about a wedding cake baker named Paige who is disillusioned with the notion of love, and who ends up having her ex boyfriend come into her bakery for a cake for his wedding。 Fed up she accepts an invite to a party where she is set up by a friend to meet a man in a black shirt, only unbeknown to Paige, she actually meets the wrong black shirt man…Can I just say first off that this is 3。5 stars rounded up, and is purely because the first half of this book was hard to read。 Paige was such This was about a wedding cake baker named Paige who is disillusioned with the notion of love, and who ends up having her ex boyfriend come into her bakery for a cake for his wedding。 Fed up she accepts an invite to a party where she is set up by a friend to meet a man in a black shirt, only unbeknown to Paige, she actually meets the wrong black shirt man…Can I just say first off that this is 3。5 stars rounded up, and is purely because the first half of this book was hard to read。 Paige was such an unlikeable character for the majority of the novel, but especially for the first half before she had started to open up and be nicer to herself and others。 She was selfish and rude and at times just plain mean- it’s easy to see why though later when *spoilers* are revealed, but it was just a bit hard to read through her perspectives at times。 On the other hand, Noah is the ultimate book boyfriend and is niceness personified。 The man is a literal ray of sunshine and it was so lovely to read about how he absolutely fell head over heels for Paige。 The last half of the book amps up the conflict, but it resolved nicely and with the characters actually having a mature conversation about things instead of lots of miscommunication; which was a nice change from a lot of other novels going around。 Overall, this is an easy beach read with a simple plot and cute characters, but you have to stick with it because it takes a bit of time to get going。 。。。more

This is a fascinating account written with humour and real skill of a young woman who is in a bit of a muddle。 Paige makes wedding cakes, mixing up sponges and coming up with ideas which will make a particular design a memorable part of a couple’s big day。 It has given her a focus as she comes to terms with her Nan’s death, the one person from her family who supported her through some dark days。 Being self-employed is risky - it means that she must embrace marketing and creating an air of confid This is a fascinating account written with humour and real skill of a young woman who is in a bit of a muddle。 Paige makes wedding cakes, mixing up sponges and coming up with ideas which will make a particular design a memorable part of a couple’s big day。 It has given her a focus as she comes to terms with her Nan’s death, the one person from her family who supported her through some dark days。 Being self-employed is risky - it means that she must embrace marketing and creating an air of confidence so that people feel that she can be trusted, despite the fact that she is really quaking with fear。 She has been hurt by her family and crucially her boyfriend, so when her ex turns up with his fiancee to choose their wedding cake, she is completely thrown。 Narrated in her own voice, she explains that she forces herself to go to a party, asking the host for a distraction。 The confusion which she suffers means that she has the confidence to approach a stranger who she believes certain things about, and plunges into a relationship。 Cakes, self image and friendship are themes which run throughout this enjoyable book。 I was pleased to have the opportunity to read and review this very personal and honest book with its relatable themes。 The book opens with an admission by Paige。”Well, this is awkward。 And surprising。 And extremely mortifying”。 She has just realised that the prospective customers for a cake who have arrived in her workshop are her ex boyfriend Chris and his new fiancee Pippa。 He immediately takes over the situation , leaving her to wonder about her residual feelings for him。 Being, she admits “a natural people pleaser” and frankly needing the business, she adopts her usual patter and provides her usual selection。 It is only to her special friend Sara she can reveal her true feelings, but there is part of even the understanding mother who does not follow why Paige is behaving with so much uncertainty。 An appalling date with a frustrated comedian follows, and Paige adds to her list of disappointing relationships。 It is a rather funny tale, because of Paige’s honest voice。 This is a very contemporary novel in that Paige can spend hours looking through social media to see the details of Chris and Pippa’s seemingly perfect life。 The combination of her lack of social life and lack of demand for her bespoke cakes is sufficiently depressing to send her off to a party held by her friend, the high powered Mika。 Milka recommends that she approach a man wearing a black top, an ex boyfriend who is an excellent source of temporary distraction, who does not want a long term relationship。 As Paige feels that she does not long deserve a long term commitment, he sounds ideal。 The only problem is, there appears to be two men wearing black tops, so Paige must make an educated guess。 It is in this way she becomes involved with Noah, and begins to realise that he may have more attractions than Milka led her to believe。 This book is so well written, detailing the daily life of a young woman who has some bad memories, but whose honesty makes her an appealing character。 Her family is well depicted, especially her horrible mother for whom she is never the favoured child。 McCulloch writes so honestly from Paige’s point of view that we are on her side throughout, even when she struggles and fails。 I learnt something of the problems of making one off cakes, and there is a charming and very funny episode where she sets up a cake with help, even when it is a difficult situation。 I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a contemporary romance novel with deeper elements, and is certainly not straightforward。 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyed this book。 The characters were really well written。 The plot was a romance but with a modern twist。 Nice to read something a little bit different and not completely predictable。 The main character, Paige, was very relatable and you could connect to her story。 This book would make a fantastic holiday read, and I got through this title very quickly。 It is a feel good book。 I also really like the cover, this would definitely appeal to me in a shop。 A loveable rom-com。

More than just an eye-catching cover and an enticing blurb, this heartfelt romantic comedy was touching and empowering and entertaining from start to finish。Paige is a wedding cake baker, and despite not being much of a romantic, she enjoys her job – at least when she gets to bake creative cakes and not a particular kind of design that is wanted by her jerk of an ex-boyfriend Chris and his wife-to-be。 As her finances aren’t great, Paige agrees to bake a cake for the happy couple – at a high fee, of course。 But being back in contact with her ex makes Paige stressed and confused, and in need of a distraction from this, she attends the party of her friend in search of a one-night-stand。 When her friend tells her to head for the guy in the black top, she does exactly that, only there’s two guys in black tops… so has she picked the right one?I enjoyed the fun concept to the story and can I just say that yes she absolutely picked her hook-up right because Noah was just a dream! I loved his character from the moment we met him and really I wanted to hear nothing more of Paige’s ex because that would waste valuable Noah time and it would have been a travesty。 Paige does not want a relationship, just something casual, and short-term, yet Noah is more romantic and would like something more settled。 Paige knows she needs to set him straight but despite her original plan, she does enjoy spending time with him。 The Mix-Up sees her battling with her own insecurities as she tries to work out what she really wants。I found Paige a likeable protagonist, if not one I wanted to shake a fair few times。 She goes back and forth a lot and never seems to be able to stick to a decision but then it would be unfair to judge as that is pretty relatable。 She is confident on the outside but more insecure than she would like to let on and I felt for her。 One thing I really did enjoy was her friendship with Sara as they both could level with each other and support each other through everything, despite their different stages in life。The overall plot in Holly McCulloch’s second novel (the first has since made its way onto my wishlist) is warm and witty yet affirming at the same time。 Despite some harder subjects, such as Paige’s strained relationship with her mother, this book had me smiling the whole way through and I was incapable of putting it down yet at the same time reluctant to see it come to an end。Towards the end of the book, I kept thinking we were running out of pages to resolve everything and in fact some things, which seemed quite major parts of the book at times, were left unresolved。 When I thought about it, I wasn’t sure if I minded that they weren’t all settled。 I don’t know if it’s because really I just wanted to read more of Noah or because maybe it was fun to get away from the typical feeling that books need to tie up all loose ends come the end, but I think I preferred it this way。 The uncertainty just seemed to fit with Paige – she was one of those characters that deserved a happy ending yet I kind of feel like there would always be another drama on the horizon for her and you know I would be there to read it if there was! Both moving and funny, The Mix-Up was a joy to read with a romance I just couldn’t get enough of。 。。。more

An enjoyable read, more complex than your standard chick lit。 My only niggle is the loose ends concerning Paiges family, I need some closure! However the rest of the story was funny and a good illustration of how past experiences and feelings can impact future relationships。 Perfect for the beach, the garden or the sofa this summer。 Thank you Netgalley

It was something different and unique。- Noah was a wonderful human being and too pure for this world。- Sara was a well-rounded, fun character who was a great friend。- It was pretty funny at times, I had a few laugh out loud moments。 I loved Holly's descriptions of people, the semi-naked cakes and the like。- I liked the healthy representation of sex, sexual freedom, masturbation, intimacy (even though I wished there had been more detail in the sex scenes)。CONS- There was an entire cancer subplot that really wasn't mentioned in the blurb or introduced well; whilst not triggering for me I know it would be for others。 And I am not keen on cancer/medical stories (due to health anxiety)。 It wasn't too graphic or descriptive though。 The first time it was mentioned, I was left confused。 Wait, Sara had cancer (which was heavily implied) and then it took a while for it to hit me that Paige had also had cancer, and that's how they'd met。 The 'breast friends' thing too。 I realise that the author herself had cancer as mentioned in her acknowledgements, and that writing this book had been healing for her。 That's great。 I just wish it had been introduced better into the story。- Paige was quite an asshole to beautiful Noah and I'm surprised he put up with it。 I know she had some deep-rooted issues but maybe I'm tired of books where women are afraid to be vulnerable and avoid intimacy, and deliberately self-sabotage。 She lied a lot, avoided being honest, and I ended up disliking her and couldn't relate to her much。 At one point I wanted to reach in and slap her into sense lol。 Her actions just seemed contradictory at times。- The family subplot went NOWHERE。 I was so disappointed。 It was an absolute disgrace how Paige's mother treated her, and I was so angry that nobody stood up or defended her? The dad was silent, her brother was silent。。。 I was hoping that there might be some resolution/comeuppance in that plot later in the book, but it never came?! I wanted Alex to stand up to his mother and tell her what she had done was wrong。 After that lunch, they were hardly mentioned ever again and to me, that was a real disservice to people struggling in poor family dynamics。 I guess it could be a reflection on real life in that sense。 But I'm not the only one who felt this either。- The Chris plot was also a huge let-down。 I was expecting (again) a confrontation, perhaps Pippa discovered them at dinner or him flirting with Paige, and subsequently calling off the wedding。 Paige could then finally be assertive and tell him what she really thinks (what everyone else thinks) of him。 That would have been a better outcome。 Or even, maybe she made the cake and something happened it on the way to the wedding lol。 Instead Chris fizzled out halfway through the book。 It was really weird。- Also, the entire premise of the blurb wasn't explored to its full potential。 I didn't expect Paige to discover she'd met the 'wrong' black top guy mid-way through the novel and then nothing big happened (except for her questioning why she was with Noah and breaking up with him even though she CLEARLY LIKED HIM A LOT smh。。。 no wonder men think we're crazy HAHA)。 - It was predictable (like。。。 when the piano in her apartment was mentioned, I KNEW that Noah would be able to play it lol。。。 I can sense these things haha)。 But then, most young adult novels are predictable in some way。 Could be a pro AND a con。Overall, whilst this book was easy and fun to read and I liked some of the characters, I really disliked the main character at times, and many subplots in the book felt unfinished and unresolved, leaving me unsatisfied :( I really would like to read "Just Friends" though, I hope that one is better! 。。。more

I was really excited to review The Mix-Up, as I had read Holly McCulloch's first book 'Just Friends' which I absolutely loved! I absolutely loved the baking in this book all the cakes and other baking goodies, left me salivating and wanting A LOT OF CAKE! I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an independent review。 This book was easy to read。 But quite slow and repetitive throughout with Paige’s yo-yo feelings about her ex。 It had the potential to be a good story but it needed to get on with her new life and romance quicker, rather than dwell continuously over her past。 I had hoped it would be fun and lighthearted。 3 stars

There is a little bit of intrigue going on too as Paige doesn't want to get romantically attached and it isn't until quite a way into the book that you find out why。 The clues are there but they are so subtle。 Clever writing as when the reveal came I had a little cry and connected with Paige all the more。I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a distraction for a few hours and wants a good laugh and a little cry。 。。。more

I was provided with an ARC by the publisher in exchange for an honest review。Things I liked:Cake Noah SaraHumour Things I didn’t like:Paige’s Ex-boyfriendPaige’s familyUnexplained storylinesTo be honest I’m just a little bit meh about lead character Paige。 At times I loved her and of course felt empathy towards her but after a while I just got a bit fed up with the self pity。 Not for me this one。 The book is called The Mix Up and definitely delivers a messy storyline。 Rushed and not always expla I was provided with an ARC by the publisher in exchange for an honest review。Things I liked:Cake Noah SaraHumour Things I didn’t like:Paige’s Ex-boyfriendPaige’s familyUnexplained storylinesTo be honest I’m just a little bit meh about lead character Paige。 At times I loved her and of course felt empathy towards her but after a while I just got a bit fed up with the self pity。 Not for me this one。 The book is called The Mix Up and definitely delivers a messy storyline。 Rushed and not always explained。 2 stars 。。。more

Paige seems to be stuck in a bit of a rut。 Having taken over her Gran’s wedding cake business, she has to deal with an abundance of sickeningly happy couples。 But Paige is far from being a romantic at heart, in fact, she has a two week limit on any relationship after her ex up and left her。Then one day, as fate would have it, her ex wanders into her shop wanting to purchase a wedding cake。 When he then begins flirting with her, Paige is obviously rather thrown by his actions。 But she focuses on Paige seems to be stuck in a bit of a rut。 Having taken over her Gran’s wedding cake business, she has to deal with an abundance of sickeningly happy couples。 But Paige is far from being a romantic at heart, in fact, she has a two week limit on any relationship after her ex up and left her。Then one day, as fate would have it, her ex wanders into her shop wanting to purchase a wedding cake。 When he then begins flirting with her, Paige is obviously rather thrown by his actions。 But she focuses on the job at hand, refusing to allow any lingering feelings to take over her。 The encounter is awkward, as you would expect, but Paige’s wit gets her through it in one piece。When her friend suggest a man who would be fun to hook up with, Paige leaps at the chance to enjoy herself after her encounter with her ex, but when she is told to approach the man with the black top, she doesn’t expect to find herself approaching the handsome Noah。 He is kind and charming, and the spark between them is instant, but with Paige still being reluctant for anything more than a hook-up, You are left wondering what will become of their chemistry。This is one of those stories that makes you smile on so many occasions as you follow Paige’s journey throughout this book。 She is clearly self critical, and has faced some difficulties over the years, but she has a strong head on her shoulders and always manages to achieve what she sets her mind to。I loved the characters and the dialogue shared between them。 Each of them have such strong personalities and traits that impact upon the story as it progresses。 Full of humour, wit, and truly heart warming moments, this is a gorgeous read that had me hooked to the very end。 。。。more
