Stunning illustrations。 The lesson in this story is so important— failure is not only essential, but arguably more important than the successes we have。 The only reason I took a star off is because I wish there was a way for the story to be told without the old man actually saying the words。 I understand this is intentional, but that doesn’t make me prefer that style any more。

Gorgeous, moving, inspiring。

Heidi

What a lovely story about encouragement and finding the courage to take the first step to TRY。 Wonderfully told with spare words but the message is overwhelmingly positive in discussing how failure creates the conditions to learn to do better and improve skills。

This book is beautifully illustrated and the story is truly affecting。 Normalizing failure and championing perseverance is a narrative that we all need to internalize and Yamada's book makes it wonderful。 The best part was that my preschooler was entranced by the entire thing and I think this will be a new bedtime staple。 This book is beautifully illustrated and the story is truly affecting。 Normalizing failure and championing perseverance is a narrative that we all need to internalize and Yamada's book makes it wonderful。 The best part was that my preschooler was entranced by the entire thing and I think this will be a new bedtime staple。 。。。more

This is one of those picture books that seems to be geared toward adults as much, or more than, it is for children。 The themes are perseverance, believing in oneself, and taking that first step in doing something difficult yet rewarding。

Gorgeous illustrations accompany this story about persevering and learning from mistakes。 A bit didactic but the overall result is beautiful。

Kobi Yamada's (What do you do with an idea?) latest on the creativity process, this time about trying and practicing even in the face of "failure。" Expressive illustrations by Elise Hurst。 Might be a little more for adults than kids (great gift book for artists and/or graduates), though I've met kids who would appreciate this。"I am now much closer to the end of my life than the beginning, and time passes whether we have the courage to do something good and worthwhile, or we don't。" "When we make Kobi Yamada's (What do you do with an idea?) latest on the creativity process, this time about trying and practicing even in the face of "failure。" Expressive illustrations by Elise Hurst。 Might be a little more for adults than kids (great gift book for artists and/or graduates), though I've met kids who would appreciate this。"I am now much closer to the end of my life than the beginning, and time passes whether we have the courage to do something good and worthwhile, or we don't。" "When we make it safe to fail, we make it safe to succeed。" 。。。more

I loved this book! The concept of never giving up is so good for adults as well as children and teens。 This is a book for all ages。 I loved the natural progression of trying , not being perfect, which leads to more trying。 It’s just a beautiful book!

Pam

Wonderful story about a young boy who learns about the value of persistence and learning from mistakes from an accomplished sculptor who takes him under his wing。 The illustrations are AMAZING! Kudos to Elise Hurst。

I really really like this book。 What a great bunch of lessons。 If you need any more convincing, I asked my 16 year old son to read this book to me and at the end, he said emphatically “we should own this book。”。 :-) High praise indeed。

Picked this picturebook up for my seniors。 During their student teaching year it is really important to remind them that this work is hard but that there is a wonderful outcome from their perseverance。
