Summary

1996 was the year that changed everything for Maggie Dawes。 Sent away at sixteen to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she could think only of the friends and family she left behind 。 。 。 until she meets Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island。 Handsome, genuine, and newly admitted to West Point, Bryce gradually shows her how much there is to love about the wind-swept beach town—and introduces her to photography, a passion that will define the rest of her life。

By 2019, Maggie is a renowned travel photographer。 She splits her time between running a successful gallery in New York and photographing remote locations around the world。 But this year she is unexpectedly grounded over Christmas, struggling to come to terms with a sobering medical diagnosis。 Increasingly dependent on a young assistant, she finds herself becoming close to him。

As they count down the last days of the season together, she begins to tell him the story of another Christmas, decades earlier—and the love that set her on a course she never could have imagined。

The Wish is a rightwing conservative morality tale in the vein of Karen Kingsbury’s Someone Like You in which author Nicholas Sparks appropriates a pregnant teen girl’s experience from the perspective of a middle age white male。 Protagonist Maggie starts out as a desperate teen mother and ends up as a dying cancer victim。 When she finds out she’s pregnant, abortion is villified, single motherhood is averted, and adoption is praised as the only “virtuous” option。 Frumpy, lackadaisical, low-achiev The Wish is a rightwing conservative morality tale in the vein of Karen Kingsbury’s Someone Like You in which author Nicholas Sparks appropriates a pregnant teen girl’s experience from the perspective of a middle age white male。 Protagonist Maggie starts out as a desperate teen mother and ends up as a dying cancer victim。 When she finds out she’s pregnant, abortion is villified, single motherhood is averted, and adoption is praised as the only “virtuous” option。 Frumpy, lackadaisical, low-achieving Maggie is juxtaposed with male counterparts Bryce and Mark--physically, intellectually, and morally muscular--unrealistically flawless “saviors。”“I was pretty clueless about the state of the world。。。and honestly didn’t care all that much。 But I liked hearing him talk and he occasionally posed serious questions about serious issues。 After pretending to think about it, I’d say something like, ‘That’s difficult to answer。 What do you think?’ and he’d start explaining his thoughts on the matter。。。I’d enjoyed the sight of his muscles。。。It made me wish that I could be more like him。” The novel wraps up with a saccharine and predictable reunion tied with the bow of Maggie’s last words to Mark, “Thank you for finding me and becoming my wish somehow made true。” If you “wish” for a more authentic alternative, Jennifer Weiner’s That Summer is a similarly setting-based novel that tackles parallel issues with diverse characters and depth of perspective。 While Sparks’ “reckoning” is the impending birth of Maggie’s baby and departure from Bryce, Weiner describes, “This is a reckoning。。。if I sit here and do nothing, I’m。。。complicit。。。‘Do you think you deserved what happened to you that summer?’。。。No girl did。。。I don’t think it’s about blame。 It’s about what happens next…。All the girls who come after us。” 。。。more

I can’t remember when I last cried when reading a book… I think it was when Dumbledore died… seriously, this will bring you to tears。 Very emotional and you start to think; about life, about choices, about death。

Karen

I thought the story was very predictable but still enjoyed reading it。

Terrible。 I’m a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks but I couldn’t get into this one。 The store was so slow and kept wonder what the point of it was。 Very disappointed。

very good book, very "nicholas sparks", but just too sad for me。 so many ways i would have liked it to end, or different directions it could have gone。 great story, great character development, i actually guessed the secret early on。 but with the world the way it is, i want happy stories and this made me more sad than happy。 i'm still glad i read it and would recommend it to others。 very good book, very "nicholas sparks", but just too sad for me。 so many ways i would have liked it to end, or different directions it could have gone。 great story, great character development, i actually guessed the secret early on。 but with the world the way it is, i want happy stories and this made me more sad than happy。 i'm still glad i read it and would recommend it to others。 。。。more

I think this is the best book Nicholas Sparks has wrote in a while。 They have all been good but this one was really good。 I kept wanting to hear Maggie’s story。 Her parents never really did understand her and her sister felt the same way Maggie did。 Neither one of them communicated that until it was to late。 In the end you felt good knowing that Maggie and Bryce we’re together for always。

Sparks never disappoints! Enjoyed this read as the ending was less predictable and a very interesting story plot :) 25th anniversary for Sparks and he nailed it!

I have read every Nicholas Sparks book and this one is just SO GOOD。 I wasn’t expecting much after that train wreck of a book “The Return” but wow, I couldn’t put the book down and I was really satisfied with it! I also really liked how the perspectives changed and just the way the book flowed。 Definitely would recommend for any Nicholas Sparks fans! Also a great holiday read。

I do not even know where to start! This book is absolutely heartbreaking! It pulled so many emotions out of me! Nicholas did such an amazing job bringing this story to life!

Great read。 Captivating and twisting as always。 Had me hoodwinked until the very end, as usual but beautiful as always。

Vintage Sparks writing。 Read it in 2 days。 The story kept me interested and the writing flowed。 The story has a lot of reality to it and for me was different from anything I have recently read。 Loved it😊

I cried so much when I finished it!!! Amazing story。 Unbelievable a male author was able to describe the pregnancy symptoms so well and overall describe the feelings of a 16 year old female as well as her 36 old self。 I could relate to so many things in this book! I recommend it to everyone。 Absolutely wonderful ❤

I am dying from cancer。I knew nothing about this book when I started reading it。 Imagine my surprise to learn the main character was dying from cancer, as am I。 The way the story was written grabbed me by the heartstrings and would not let go。 I only hope that I have the love and people who love me so that I can face the future。 This book meant so much to me。 Thank you Nicholas Sparks for the gift of “The Wish”

I absolutely loved this book。 Nicholas Sparks has such an amazing talent for writing moving and heartfelt novels。 This one was a treasure like many of his others。

I don't read most the books Nicholas Sparks writes, but I was coming off a gruesome murder mystery and figured I could use something different。 I've seen more movies than read books by him, and I'm reminded of how much better books are。 He's a great writer and really draws you into the plot。 Was the ending a surprise? Not really。 But it was really well done。 Chock up another tear-jerking book of romance and loss for Nicholas Sparks。 I don't read most the books Nicholas Sparks writes, but I was coming off a gruesome murder mystery and figured I could use something different。 I've seen more movies than read books by him, and I'm reminded of how much better books are。 He's a great writer and really draws you into the plot。 Was the ending a surprise?
