Summary

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY P。D。 JAMES

This book contains all the investigations and adventures of the world's most popular detective, Sherlock Holmes。 From 'The Adventure of the Gloria Scott' to 'His Last Bow' we follow the illustrious career of this quintessential British hero from his university days to his final case。 His efforts to uncover the truth take him all over the world and into conflict with all manner of devious criminals and dangerous villains, but thankfully his legendary powers of deduction, and his faithful companion Dr Watson, are more than up to the challenge。

I read this whenever I’m sick, and it never fails to lift my spirits。 Highly recommend。

My old boxed set is held together with glue, tape and pure love。 I've read these so many times even attempting to count would be a joke, and yet, I somehow appreciate them just as much on the umpteenth re-read as I did on the first。 If any book ever transported me to another time and place, it's the Holmesian canon。 My old boxed set is held together with glue, tape and pure love。 I've read these so many times even attempting to count would be a joke, and yet, I somehow appreciate them just as much on the umpteenth re-read as I did on the first。 If any book ever transported me to another time and place, it's the Holmesian canon。 。。。more

What a fabulous collection! This was a group read that was to go from October 1 - October 31。 However, the stories were so compelling that I finished this book one week ahead of the planned reading and discussions。Whether they were short stories or the couple of longer tales, reading about Sherlock Holmes, Watson and occasionally Mycroft, it was great to see the incredible deduction skills that Holmes had。 In fact, from time to time as he questioned Watson (btw, the book was written in Watson's What a fabulous collection! One of my favorite characters。 The superhuman aspects that feel just enough in reach that possibly, someday, we might attain his skills, if we try super hard, and have his self-control with cocaine…

Sherlock Holmes is definitely the man when it comes to deductive reasoning and although some of the stories can be a little disappointing I absolutely love Conan Doyle's ingenuity in creating this detective!! This work includes all of Holmes' adventures all in one huge tome。。。 And it is amazing!!Holmes and Watson are the quintessential detective pairing。 Holmes' selfish and oft times blunt personality is balanced by Watson's compassion!! He's not called the world's greatest detective for nothing。 I have to admit, I had to read some of these stories in school and they were lost on me。 When I returned to them I realized just how great they are。 Sherlock and Watson have such a wonderful partnership and dynamic that each story thrills with new sensations and mystery。 He's not called the world's greatest detective for nothing。 I have to admit, I had to read some of these stories in school and they were lost on me。 When I returned to them I realized just how great they are。 Sherlock and Watson have such a wonderful partnership and dynamic that each story thrills with new sensations and mystery。 。。。more

A Study in Scarlet, reviewed on 10/2/2021:I'm quite familiar with the character of Sherlock Holmes (as most people are), but this is my first time actually reading one of the Sherlock Holmes novels。 I thought it was a well-written mystery, and I thought Holmes himself was concisely written。 The author did an impressive job of making even the most menial details look blatant and obvious。 Furthermore, Holmes's line of reasoning was sound and not too difficult to follow。 He came off as fairly belie A Study in Scarlet, reviewed on 10/2/2021:I'm quite familiar with the character of Sherlock Holmes (as most people are), but this is my first time actually reading one of the Sherlock Holmes novels。 I thought it was a well-written mystery, and I thought Holmes himself was concisely written。 The author did an impressive job of making even the most menial details look blatant and obvious。 Furthermore, Holmes's line of reasoning was sound and not too difficult to follow。 He came off as fairly believable, insofar as an eccentric character like him can be believable。The only part of the novel I found unnecessary was the lengthy aside told from John Ferrier's point-of-view。 It's not that I found that part boring or unenjoyable, but it did feel like a huge block of exposition was abruptly dumped into the middle of the story。 Right when the killer was caught, the novel breaks, and I'm suddenly reading a very different story about frontiersmen and Mormons。 Granted, this side story does tie into the main story and provide insight for the killer's motivation (seriously, who needs seven wives?), but I also think it could have been handled better。。。 or at least placed somewhere else, so it wouldn't break the narrative flow。 Still, that's the only real problem I had with A Study in Scarlet。 It was a good mystery novel, and it left me interested in more of Arthur Conan Doyle's work。My final rating for A Study in Scarlet is 4/5 stars。 。。。more

Classic mystery stories。 The virtues and villains are never far from the sitting room of Baker Street。 Holmes and Watson are wonderful companions along these fascinating adventures。 This particular edition includes all stories, both the short (ie the Speckled Band) and longer stories (ie A Study in Scarlet, the Hound of the Baskerville)。 Highly recommend, the shorter stories are around 3-5 pages and can be read in 20-30 mins。

Hello greatest detective in the world。 As a big fan of Sherlock Holmes I found diving into the actual cannon about him a wonderful journey of deduction, mystery, and suspense。 If you're a fan of the show or the movies, check out the stories that inspired both。 Hello greatest detective in the world。 As a big fan of Sherlock Holmes I found diving into the actual cannon about him a wonderful journey of deduction, mystery, and suspense。 If you're a fan of the show or the movies, check out the stories that inspired both。 。。。more

Took me almost a year and a half to read this complete works, but I finally finished! I took breaks between the books to keep myself from getting burnt out。 The stories were enjoyable, but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was often so consistent with his rendering of Holmes and Watson to become almost tiresome if read in quick succession。 I really like the personality type of Holmes and those characters who follow in his footsteps (Sheldon Cooper and Dr。 Gregory House are the first two who spring to mind) Took me almost a year and a half to read this complete works, but I finally finished! A vital edition of the Canon to have in any collection。 The annotations give a wealth of information about Holmes and his world。 Having the stories in chronological order is excellent as well。

It's weird to give a review to such an old classic。 I wouldn't say it is the most exciting read today, but it is definitely worth reading, at least so you can form your own opinion on it。 It's weird to give a review to such an old classic。 I wouldn't say it is the most exciting read today, but it is definitely worth reading, at least so you can form your own opinion on it。 。。。more

Sherlock Holmes was my close companion through the early days of covid-19。 In February 2019, we visited the Magic Castle in LA, and I was called on stage during one of the performances。 The magician did an incredible trick wherein he gave me a book (which I examined!), asked me name a random page number, and then had another audience member hand him a sealed envelope which he had received before the show。 We opened the envelope, and inside was THE PAGE I HAD SELECTED。 And of course, when I turne Sherlock Holmes was my close companion through the early days of covid-19。 In February 2019, we visited the Magic Castle in LA, and I was called on stage during one of the performances。 The magician did an incredible trick wherein he gave me a book (which I examined!), asked me name a random page number, and then had another audience member hand him a sealed envelope which he had received before the show。 We opened the envelope, and inside was THE PAGE I HAD SELECTED。 And of course, when I turned to that page in the book, there was a tear and a missing sheet。 The book was “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, and I got to keep it as a souvenir。 A few days later, looking for something to read, I started working my way through the collection。 I had read quiet a few Holmes stories in school over the years, but it had been a while。 I quickly worked my way through the book, then found my other Holmes book from a college course and read those stories as well。 Then I did some research to figure out which Holmes stories remained, and realized it was time to buy a “Complete Sherlock Holmes” collection。 That long collection of stories seemed like a fitting activity for the interminable days stuck at home。 Unfortunately the pandemic long outlasted the anthology。 My favorite stories turned out to be the Holmes novellas: they had a familiar style to the normal short stories, but the added length made room for much deeper explorations into character’s back stories etc。 “The Valley of Fear” was my favorite of these longer works。 。。。more
