(audiobook version)Wonderful and very listenable。 I worry a lot with reference type books in audio format and have been stung before by a person reading lists。 Glad to say this one is 97% narrative telling and a tiny bit of the basic facts at the end of each story。 Loved every minute of it。 It was either refreshing my memory of stories I read long ago or giving the cliffnotes of ones i will never get to。 Recommended for any fan of 221b。

https://maxlapin。 https://maxlapin。com/2020/11/27/b287/ 。。。more

Great book overall but it took me literally a decade to finish because of all the detailed information (and this book itself is already super thick!!!)。 I'm pretty sure that I'll re-read this book over and over again。This one could be best served as a reference book, something that you read after finishing the main stories to find more easter eggs。 All Sherlock Holmes stories were arranged chronologically, each story is covered by around 10 to 20 pages with original illustration。 It talked about Great book overall but it took me literally a decade to finish because of all the detailed information (and this book itself is already super thick!!!)。 I'm pretty sure that I'll re-read this book over and over again。This one could be best served as a reference book, something that you read after finishing the main stories to find more easter eggs。 All Sherlock Holmes stories were arranged chronologically, each story is covered by around 10 to 20 pages with original illustration。 It talked about background stories, some hints that were not explained well enough in the main stories, Holmes's reasoning and etc。 In some parts, it provided comparison between the stories which gives reader a more systematic thinking of how stories are related。 A really enjoyable read。 。。。more

This book goes through every Sherlock Holmes story and explains the characters, the story, and background。 Then the second part is about customs and history of Victorian London。If you love SH, you will love this。

Highly informative introduction and a ready reference to Holmes。 The illustrations are cool and the artwork accompanying each of the chapter nicely brings out the analytical details of the story concerned。 There are some typos in the print though。 Overall a good read。 Some mild trivia here and there are especially likable。

A must-have for the Sherlock Holmes fans。

William Smithwick

Must read for any Homles fan。 The insets were repetitive if you read the text。

Not a full read through, as this is more of a reference book for the Canon with some great background info on the stories, author, media, & culture。

You -- and I cannot stress this enough -- should be reading this book right at this moment if you love Sherlock Holmes。 You will not regret it。

John Fraley

Very informative。

Katharine

More like an encyclopedia than anything else, but great for Holmes-nerds like myself!

Linda

Bailed。 This got left behind in the move。 Sadly it held no new information so I just could never get excited by it。 A novice to the Holmes canon would probably find it most illuminating。

。。。more

This book takes each of the Canon and describes and annotates it。 Each story has a chapter which explains Conan Doyle's ideas。 It helps if you do not understand Watson and need more explanation。 The ideas about the Victorian world and detective fiction are good if simple。 The problem is that you would do better to read the stories。 Please do not spoil them by reading this book first。 This book takes each of the Canon and describes and annotates it。 Each story has a chapter which explains Conan Doyle's ideas。 It helps if you do not understand Watson and need more explanation。 The ideas about the Victorian world and detective fiction are good if simple。 The problem is that you would do better to read the stories。 Please do not spoil them by reading this book first。 。。。more

For Sherlock Holmes fans and enthusiasts, this book is a must-have。 The book discusses each story that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote that features Holmes and Watson。 I also like the Pop Culture section where it talks about the movies, TV shows and fandok surrounding the great detective。 Fantastic illustrations and easy-to-read format。 Great addition to your book collection。

I liked this very much。 It is filled with interesting background information and the layout is very well put together。

This is a very interesting recap of everything Holmes。 In addition to biographical information about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, there are summaries of every story in the Holmes canon, short bits about the Victorian era, sidebars about things like hansom cabs, Jack the Ripper, and many others。 There are lists of movies, authors of pastiches & parodies, TV shows, and much much more。 People who are just starting out as fans of Holmes & Watson can find a lot of good source material here, in addition to This is a very interesting recap of everything Holmes。 In addition to biographical information about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, there are summaries of every story in the Holmes canon, short bits about the Victorian era, sidebars about things like hansom cabs, Jack the Ripper, and many others。 There are lists of movies, authors of pastiches & parodies, TV shows, and much much more。 People who are just starting out as fans of Holmes & Watson can find a lot of good source material here, in addition to canon。This book is one BIG spoiler - if you have never read the original Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories, do NOT read this book until you have done so (I don't expect there to be many people who have not read the original in some language or other - all the stories have been translated into more languages than anything else except the Bible - another of the neat little facts from this book)。Also, if you have not read Sherlock Holmes, and you like mysteries, what are you waiting for? Then read this book for additional information。 。。。more

Skipped a few parts about stories I did not get to yet, but all in all it was great reading it!

Scott Fitzgerald

An essential tool for any holmesian intellectuals。All background information like history and methodology to any case is depicted in this 。 Cannot recommend this highly enough for anyone looking for a book on Sherlock Holmes without any uneccesary jargon in it

Good reference text - I read this alongside re-reading the Holmes canon。 Not really sure what readership it’s aimed at - too detailed for GCSE students, completely redundant for Holmesians, too long for most moderately interested readers - ? A lot of work has gone into it though and it’ll be useful to refer to in future to remind me of which story is which ;-)
