Summary

Greece in the age of Heroes。 Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia。 Here he is nobody, just another unwanted boy living in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles。

Achilles, “best of all the Greeks,” is everything Patroclus is not—strong, beautiful, the child of a goddess—and by all rights their paths should never cross。 Yet one day, Achilles takes the shamed prince under his wing and soon their tentative connection gives way to a steadfast friendship。 As they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something far deeper—despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals。

Fate is never far from the heels of Achilles。 When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name。 Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause。 Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows Achilles into war, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they have learned, everything they hold dear。 And that, before he is ready, he will be forced to surrender his friend to the hands of Fate。

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart。

i don’t want to be repetitive as there are so many glowing reviews of this book i could give。 but it was fluid magic to its core。 the pain and beauty of these characters fights to your core till you are bonded to every emotion。 it was brilliant and beautiful, a tale for the ages。 and GOD did it hurt。 kind of brought me back to the mindset that made me love reading。 it was imaginative as it was poetic。 the only keeping me from a 5 star rating is my one inadequacies of taking too many breaks over i don’t want to be repetitive as there are so many glowing reviews of this book i could give。 but it was fluid magic to its core。 the pain and beauty of these characters fights to your core till you are bonded to every emotion。 it was brilliant and beautiful, a tale for the ages。 and GOD did it hurt。 kind of brought me back to the mindset that made me love reading。 it was imaginative as it was poetic。 the only keeping me from a 5 star rating is my one inadequacies of taking too many breaks over the couple weeks i read this and subsequently forgetting many of the characters names。 lots of greek names they got jumbled and kind of took me out of the story but like i said it is mostly my own doing for reading it over a long span of time。 。。。more

This book。。。 wow。 No idea why it took me so long to read because I loved it。 It broke my heart, but I still loved it。 It’s a tale I know by forwards and backwards from all my time spent reading it and studying in school。 However it was brought to life in such a new and fresh way!

This story was great and you can see why it has been told so many times and this is a beautiful rendition。 Seeing the story of a Greek hero told through a somewhat queer lens made the characters all that more relatable。

So I literally just finished and I'm crying so hard LOLanyways this was amazing, I love how every single character was portrayed, especially Achilles, he's not perfect and it's shown very clearly。 The writing is beautiful almost lyrical and the heartbreak is REAL。 After sobbing through the last 30 pages I can say that I'm definitely going to go into a huge reading slump AND obsess over Greek mythology<3 So I literally just finished and I'm crying so hard LOLanyways this was amazing, I love how every single character was portrayed, especially Achilles, he's not perfect and it's shown very clearly。 The writing is beautiful almost lyrical and the heartbreak is REAL。 After sobbing through the last 30 pages I can say that I'm definitely going to go into a huge reading slump AND obsess over Greek mythology<3 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was so beautiful in the beginning。 I absolutely loved the bond between Achilles and Patroclus。 Why Thetis was such a cold-hearted fish is beyond me。 She was legit against her child being in love and happy。 Patroclus is right, she did ruin him。 When it got to the war chapters, I was kind of bored because I’m not a war person but then when everything went south and it kept on getting sad each chapter, my heart shattered。 This book quite literally showed unconditional bond between two peo This book was so beautiful in the beginning。 I absolutely loved the bond between Achilles and Patroclus。 Why Thetis was such a cold-hearted fish is beyond me。 She was legit against her child being in love and happy。 Patroclus is right, she did ruin him。 When it got to the war chapters, I was kind of bored because I’m not a war person but then when everything went south and it kept on getting sad each chapter, my heart shattered。 This book quite literally showed unconditional bond between two people but why it was this heart breaking is beyond me?! I have never been one to be interested in mythology but this book has definitely changed that for me。 。。。more

4。75 stars? I very much loved this book it was heartbreaking in the best way possible。 My only tiny issue is that it is told from a side character's (Lover/best friend's) perspective。 The story really is more about Achilles' journey。 It kinda lacks in the punch of an active main protagonist。 4。75 stars? I am absolutely enthralled with this book。 This book deserves ten stars。 The writing is perfect。 Seriously。 The writing is so well written and with purpose。 Every line fits together like a puzzle that was made to be broken and put together again。 Miller writes like she was with the characters in Ancient Greece all those years ago。 Patroclus' character is beautiful and real and true。 Patroclus and Achilles are each other's other half。 Their love is honest and pure, they understand each other, and I am absolutely enthralled with this book。 This book deserves ten stars。 The writing is perfect。 Seriously。 The writing is so well written and with purpose。 Every line fits together like a puzzle that was made to be broken and put together again。 Miller writes like she was with the characters in Ancient Greece all those years ago。 Patroclus' character is beautiful and real and true。 Patroclus and Achilles are each other's other half。 Their love is honest and pure, they understand each other, and they are helplessly and hopelessly in love。 After they died, the last chapter broke me。 I thought it couldn't get any worse, but Miller knows how to embody her characters and invoke feeling。 (view spoiler)[When Patroclus was by himself, waiting to be buried, my heart shattered。 He awaited to be reunited with Achilles in death, and when he wasn't, he was helplessly wandering, waiting for someone to take pity on him。 I think Thetis came full circle when she realized her faults with Pyrrhus and her lack of better judgement when it came to Achilles and Patroclus。 Of course she would be the one to reunite them in death。 (hide spoiler)]Their story is entwined, and I'm happy that Miller writes about their relationship。 I also like that Helen was not a big part of the story, she was only the cause of the war, no real importance, just shows that men will fight for a beautiful face they've never seen。 The relationship between god and mortal is a big aspect of the this book, and Miller's way of acknowledging certain gods and not others is interesting。 I feel like there was a parallel between Thetis and Briseis。 Don't want to get too much into it at risk of spoiling, but they both were what the other was for each boy。 (view spoiler)[Briseis telling Achilles he wasn't good enough for Patroclus, while Thetis constantly goes on about how Patroclus is not deserving and too mortal for Achilles。 (hide spoiler)]I loved their little moments, their hidden smiles, their small touches, tossing figs, racing each other, etc。 So sweet and pure。 Their time with Chiron a blissful state that was cut short。 Their agonizing love for each other drove them both to do unthinkable things, and turn them both into people they weren't。 (view spoiler)[Patroclus killing soldiers and climbing the wall disguised as Achilles in desperate hopes that he could end the war somehow and Achilles would be spared。 Or Achilles going absolutely mad after his death。 (hide spoiler)] But at the same time their love drove them to do such beautiful things。 Achilles' instinct to protect Patroclus is so touching and heart-wrenching, and vice versa, just in different ways。 Both become such pivotal and integral parts in the other boys' life。I don't know what to do with myself now after reading this book except maybe thank the gods and sacrifice a few goats for the gift that is The Song of Achilles。 。。。more

This book was just incredible。 So beautifully written and crafted in a way where you fall in love with both Patroclus and Achilles and you can’t help but feel this attachment to them both, as well as other characters such as Chiron or Briesis。 I can’t put into words the way this made me feel, it was simply phenomenal。 I would recommend to all。

Personally, I thought the book was brilliant。 It was gripping, heart-breaking, and the relationship development between Achilles and Patroclus is done quietly, but in a way that makes you fall in love with them as much as they do with each other。My reason for four stars however, is because it was definitely overhyped。 I tend not to get too emotional when I read anyway, so I didn't burst into tears or scream into a void at the ending。 Perhaps if I'd heard less about it, I would have been less。。。 Personally, I thought the book was brilliant。 It was gripping, heart-breaking, and the relationship development between Achilles and Patroclus is done quietly, but in a way that makes you fall in love with them as much as they do with each other。My reason for four stars however, is because it was definitely overhyped。 I tend not to get too emotional when I read anyway, so I didn't burst into tears or scream into a void at the ending。 Perhaps if I'd heard less about it, I would have been less。。。 well, not disappointed, but my expectations would've been lower。I still whole-heartedly recommend this book。 It's written beautifully。 I only wish I'd read it earlier。 。。。more
