This book discusses the side effects of eating junk food regularly。 Brother, Sister, and Papa bear are getting in the habit of eating junk food often and Mama bear brings them to a doctor to teach them about the negative implications junk food can have on a person's physical health。 By the end of the book the whole family realizes that eating healthy can be delicious as well。 The characters in this story have a change of heart when they learn the true benefits of eating healthy foods。 The book i This book discusses the side effects of eating junk food regularly。 Brother, Sister, and Papa bear are getting in the habit of eating junk food often and Mama bear brings them to a doctor to teach them about the negative implications junk food can have on a person's physical health。 By the end of the book the whole family realizes that eating healthy can be delicious as well。 The characters in this story have a change of heart when they learn the true benefits of eating healthy foods。 The book is full of bright, colorful photos with obvious face expressions from the mom toward the kids。 I like the meaning behind the book and how it makes healthy food more enjoyable to kids。 I would use this book as a lesson to students who do not like fruits and vegetables。 。。。more

➳ My mother gave us figs for our after school snack。 We were raised on fruits & walnuts and could never watch television unless we a) played outside for an equal amount of time, or b) read for an equal amount of time。 Sometimes she'd wake us fifteen minutes early to eat an apple before breakfast because she said it was healthy to let the natural sugar soak in -- or something。 So I approve of this book because it reminded me of home, ha ha。 Also Papa Bear is funny。 :-) ➳ My mother gave us figs for our after school snack。 We were raised on fruits & walnuts and could never watch television unless we a) played outside for an equal amount of time, or b) read for an equal amount of time。 Sometimes she'd wake us fifteen minutes early to eat an apple before breakfast because she said it was healthy to let the natural sugar soak in -- or something。 So I approve of this book because it reminded me of home, ha ha。 Also Papa Bear is funny。 :-) 。。。more

I really feel for Stan Berenstain。 He has a famous children's book series full of little life morals for the children, and, about 20 books in, he decides to do a book on healthy eating and the perils of junk food。 (with some fatphobia sprinkled in, because this was written in the 80's)There's just one problem - his established franchise characters are all grizzly bears, animals that are renowned for gorging themselves on so much food during the summer and fall months that their body mass practic I really feel for Stan Berenstain。 He has a famous children's book series full of little life morals for the children, and, about 20 books in, he decides to do a book on healthy eating and the perils of junk food。 (with some fatphobia sprinkled in, because this was written in the 80's)There's just one problem - his established franchise characters are all grizzly bears, animals that are renowned for gorging themselves on so much food during the summer and fall months that their body mass practically doubles before they hibernate。No seriously。 Look up "Fat Bear Week" and you'll see why this book falls flat on its face the moment Mama Bear looks at her two kids getting fatter and doesn't congratulate them for learning how to survive the winter。 Sure, Mama Bear may look smart, but that polka-dotted dress isn't going to protect her when the snows come。 (Yes I know these are bears that have learned to become people, but still。)As for the book's contents, it gets three stars for the junk food illustrations (which made me want to eat junk food, ruining the book's message) but I will admit that I find it funny that the message of this book is not moderation or limiting unhealthy foods but rather "you are either a mindless slave to chocolate and therefore ONLY consume junk or you're a health junkie that brings raisins to the movie theaters"。 These bears just go full tilt on their eating habits when a better message is "you can eat popcorn, just don't try to live off of it like the Berenstain Bears, who have enough junk food in their house to stock a candy store"。 Also, no offense, Stan Berenstain, but frozen yogurt is technically junk food。 Check and mate。 。。。more

I think the overall idea of this book is really nice: encouraging healthy habits in our diets and exercise, etc。 I like that the family works on developing their habits together and hold each other accountable。 With that said, there are ways to encourage healthful eating habits and exercise without fat shaming。 I would love an update on these themes。

Really liked this book for the most part--focusing on eating veggies, fruits, and other things that help fuel your body and make it function correctly, going over the systems in the body, a female doctor, etc。--but I STRONGLY didn't like that weight was so heavily relied upon as the sign of being unhealthy。 There are so many other side effects to eating mostly sugar/snack foods--tooth decay, mood swings, bad sleep, etc。--but they ONLY focused on weight gain/loss。 Because this perpetuates some re Really liked this book for the most part--focusing on eating veggies, fruits, and other things that help fuel your body and make it function correctly, going over the systems in the body, a female doctor, etc。--but I STRONGLY didn't like that weight was so heavily relied upon as the sign of being unhealthy。 There are so many other side effects to eating mostly sugar/snack foods--tooth decay, mood swings, bad sleep, etc。--but they ONLY focused on weight gain/loss。 Because this perpetuates some really harmful societal norms around weight, body size, and health, I would NOT recommend it as a book for your kids。 There are probably other books out there they discuss eating to fuel your body and help it function well that does not also cause harm。 。。。more

This is not bad。 It's just kind of boring。 There's some quick shallow science。 And a quick message。 But it's just not all that much fun。 And therefore its moralizing message just makes me hungry。 For cashew nuts which aren't quite junk food。 2。5 of 5。 This is not bad。 It's just kind of boring。 There's some quick shallow science。 And a quick message。 But it's just not all that much fun。 And therefore its moralizing message just makes me hungry。 For cashew nuts which aren't quite junk food。 2。5 of 5。 。。。more

Who doesn't love the Berenstain Bears?! This is a good book to help kids understand that while junk food tastes good, but it is important to eat healthy and to get some exercise。 This book might be challenging for beginner readers。 This is an AR book for anyone who might want to know。 I would recommend this book to everyone。 Who doesn't love the Berenstain Bears?! I remember the Berenstain Bear Books vividly。 I remember learning how to read from these books and Too Much Junk Food, in particular, was one of my favorites。 I loved the art style so I constantly looked it over and eventually was able to read it on my own。 Later on, I remembered this book, how much I loved it, and the life lesson I didn't realize it taught me。 The goal with children's book is to have some sort of goal, moral story or life lesson and this book definitely delivers that。 I remember the Berenstain Bear Books vividly。 I remember learning how to read from these books and Too Much Junk Food, in particular, was one of my favorites。 I loved the art style so I constantly looked it over and eventually was able to read it on my own。 Later on, I remembered this book, how much I loved it, and the life lesson I didn't realize it taught me。 The goal with children's book is to have some sort of goal, moral story or life lesson and this book definitely delivers that。 。。。more

Really helpful in getting my kids to actively think about their eating habits。 Loved my 7yo daughter's enthusiasm。 I would have liked to see a bit more emphasis on other consequences of eating junk food, as the primary focus was weight gain。 Really helpful in getting my kids to actively think about their eating habits。 Loved my 7yo daughter's enthusiasm。 I would have liked to see a bit more emphasis on other consequences of eating junk food, as the primary focus was weight gain。 。。。more

Who doesn't love junk food? This book tells children that they don't want to get fat。 That is their motivation to eat healthy。 Scary to think that we used to teach our children this! The part where it shows a bear's anatomy is the same as a human's is odd as well。 This book tells children that they don't want to get fat。 That is their motivation to eat healthy。 Scary to think that we used to teach our children this! I totally love this book。 The cubs are cuter when they are chubbier but Mama Bear knows the best。Also, love this part: "And what are we suppose to drink?" asked Papa。 "Try this," she said。 "It's called water。" I totally love this book。 The cubs are cuter when they are chubbier but Mama Bear knows the best。Also, love this part: "And what are we suppose to drink?" asked Papa。 "Try this," she said。 "It's called water。" 。。。more

I understand what the authors are getting at here, but I don’t necessarily think that they approached this topic correctly。 In todays world, it is taught to be who you are and the way the authors are talking here, seems to not agree with this kind of society。 Just because Mama notices her cubs are “getting bigger” doesn’t mean that they need to change everything they are eating, and doing to change。 I wouldn’t recommend this book for a group of children, unless there was a full explanation that I understand what the authors are getting at here, but I don’t necessarily think that they approached this topic correctly。 In todays world, it is taught to be who you are and the way the authors are talking here, seems to not agree with this kind of society。 Just because Mama notices her cubs are “getting bigger” doesn’t mean that they need to change everything they are eating, and doing to change。 I wouldn’t recommend this book for a group of children, unless there was a full explanation that went along with the story, and in some places even changed what the author was saying to something a little better or more relatable to the society we’re in now。 。。。more

tThe Berenstain Bears books were a staple in my house。Often being bought by my parents to teach me a lesson。This is a lesson on healthy eating。

I enjoyed it as did my son。 We've been having strong discussions about cupcakes。 Specifically why he can not have one if he already had a different sugary snack。 This book is a good tool to help reinforce better eating habits before sugary snacks with the why's answered as well。It is also a nice reminder for older readers not just the young。 I enjoyed it as did my son。 We've been having strong discussions about cupcakes。 Specifically why he can not have one if he already had a different sugary snack。 This book is a good tool to help reinforce better eating habits before sugary snacks with the why's answered as well。It is also a nice reminder for older readers not just the young。 。。。more

Cringe-worthy, fat-shaming。 They did talk a little about food as fuel but it was mostly about how they were too chubby。
