Summary

For fans of the hit Netflix docuseries The Last Dance

During his storied career as head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, Phil Jackson won more championships than any coach in the history of professional sports。 Even more important, he succeeded in never wavering from coaching his way, from a place of deep values。 Jackson was tagged as the 'Zen master' half in jest by sportswriters, but the nickname speaks to an important truth: this is a coach who inspired, not goaded; who led by awakening and challenging the better angels of his players’ nature, not their egos, fear, or greed。

This is the story of a preacher’s kid from North Dakota who grew up to be one of the most innovative leaders of our time。 In his quest to reinvent himself, Jackson explored everything from humanistic psychology and Native American philosophy to Zen meditation。 In the process, he developed a new approach to leadership based on freedom, authenticity, and selfless teamwork that turned the hyper-competitive world of professional sports on its head。

In Eleven Rings, Jackson candidly describes how he:

- Learned the secrets of mindfulness and team chemistry while playing for the champion New York Knicks in the 1970s

- Managed Michael Jordan, the greatest player in the world, and got him to embrace selflessness, even if it meant losing a scoring title

- Forged successful teams out of players of varying abilities by getting them to trust one another and perform in sync

- Inspired Dennis Rodman and other 'uncoachable' personalities to devote themselves to something larger than themselves

- Transformed Kobe Bryant from a rebellious teenager into a mature leader of a championship team。

Eleven times, Jackson led his teams to the ultimate goal: the NBA championship six times with the Chicago Bulls and five times with the Los Angeles Lakers。 We all know the legendary stars on those teams, or think we do。 What Eleven Rings shows us, however, is that when it comes to the most important lessons, we don’t know very much at all。 This book is full of revelations: about fascinating personalities and their drive to win; about the wellsprings of motivation and competition at the highest levels; and about what it takes to bring out the best in ourselves and others。

cool look into the 90s bulls and 00s lakers and phil jacksons interesting blend of spirituality and basketball, at times felt like listening to a stat sheet though

Honestly one of the brightest basketball minds the game has ever seen。 It isn’t that he is all about his X’s and O’s it’s that he managed egos he implemented his own practices of meditation into the game he loved。 This man has coached my favorite players of all time and deserves a ton of credit for being a integral part of 11 championships as a coach !

Enjoyed replaying championship games I watched growing up, all through the perspective of one of the greatest coaches of all time。 This read is good for any coach (or leader), trying to gain a deeper spiritual perspective on how to elicit top notch performance, instill valuable life lessons, and manage team egos。 Jackson’s Zen Master approach was fascinating。 Thoroughly enjoyed the use of Buddhist teachings & practices used throughout the book!

Really liked the connection between sports, management and Zen Buddhism。 The book provided a lot of useful takeaways for the everyday life。

This is a wonderful sports but that is chocked full of action from one of the greatest coaches of all time。 His comments about stars like Jordan, Pippin, Rodman, Shaw and Kobe were impressive。 They also had me meandering back to those incidents and had me remembering where I was for them。 Additionally, his life advice is valuable。 A very good book I recommend

Interesting book about how to deal with people from all walks of life, from a man who has won it all

This book is a great read and gives a great perspective on two championship teams。 It’s full of basketball references so you might need to be a fan to get the most out of the character references。 Despite that there’s a lot of good insight into management and leadership。

I love reading about leadership。 I enjoy basketball。 The story of Phil Jackson is really nice, I just think there could be more to talk about the soul of succes and not just his story。 Overrall good, just anticlimatic。 Missing a great last chapter。

Cool insights from a legendary coach of two dynasties

Sam

Amazing book and one hell of an amazing guy。 This book is more on leadership and how to move forward without losing yourself in the process。 Definitely one time read but some zen quotes were pure bliss and intriguing!

I could not put it down。 Zen Master over here。

Despite having never watched a basketball game in my life, this book was amazing。 Phil Jackson is a true genius in leadership。 Brining Zen philosophy into a highly chaotic and stressful sport he has coached and lead the most iconic sports teams in history。

This is one of the best books i’ve ever read。 It’s different than other sports books and changed my outlook on athletics。 Phil is a very unique basketball coach。 The book isn’t filled with what you would expect from someone like him。 Never in my life would I have expected to read about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Michael Jordan’s game six performance in the same book。 It taught me a lot about life while at the same time telling me the story of how Phil got his rings。 From a basketball standp This is one of the best books i’ve ever read。 It’s different than other sports books and changed my outlook on athletics。 Phil is a very unique basketball coach。 The book isn’t filled with what you would expect from someone like him。 Never in my life would I have expected to read about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Michael Jordan’s game six performance in the same book。 It taught me a lot about life while at the same time telling me the story of how Phil got his rings。 From a basketball standpoint this book also impressed。 Kobe and Jordan’s stories have been talked about a lot so if you already know them don’t expect a lot of new things。 What I loved though was the fact that he didn’t talk about them much。 Most stories about the bulls and lakers tend to talk about them a lot because it sells, but Phil talked a lot about everyone else and the team as a whole。 Personally i find it way more interesting to read about Dennis Rodman and Metta World Peace because i haven’t already heard their stories thousands of times。 This book perfectly combines the worlds of psychology and sports with a little dash of spirituality。 If you like that sort of stuff you will love this book。 。。。more

Good book which provides authentic insight into relationships Jackson had with some of the sport’s biggest names。 If you have bought this, you are probably familiar with some of Jackson’s philosophies and ‘out there’ thinking - this book goes deeper as you would hope but also talks to the ethos behind why basketball strategies such as the triangle were so integral to the success of Jackson’s Bulls and Lakers。The conversation with Jordan on how he needs to get to the next level is fantastic, as i Good book which provides authentic insight into relationships Jackson had with some of the sport’s biggest names。 If you have bought this, you are probably familiar with some of Jackson’s philosophies and ‘out there’ thinking - this book goes deeper as you would hope but also talks to the ethos behind why basketball strategies such as the triangle were so integral to the success of Jackson’s Bulls and Lakers。The conversation with Jordan on how he needs to get to the next level is fantastic, as is how he manages the late great Kobe。As a book itself, there are some parts which dragged a little in my opinion but overall, good book。 。。。more

Great mix of zen, leadership, coaching & basketball。Superb stories about the leading characters during his playing career and more detailed in his coaching career with the Bulls and the Lakers。 Jackson goes through his wins and losses without hiding, saying where he did well and where he could’ve done better。His teams were iconic, with some of the best players ever。 If you’re a sports fan, this is must-read。

It's an excellent summer reading, highly recommended。 Jackson could have easily written 800 or 1000 pages for the same events that were squeezed into 350 pages。 The man is a living legend and I'm neither a Lakers nor a Bulls fan。 But I'm glad he didn't, because the way the book is structured keeps you energised till the final page。 I also liked the fact that Jackson did not focus on his personal life; it's a sports memoir, read by sports fans which are interested in sports, not personal drama。 It's an excellent summer reading, highly recommended。 Jackson could have easily written 800 or 1000 pages for the same events that were squeezed into 350 pages。 The man is a living legend and I'm neither a Lakers nor a Bulls fan。 But I'm glad he didn't, because the way the book is structured keeps you energised till the final page。 I also liked the fact that Jackson did not focus on his personal life; it's a sports memoir, read by sports fans which are interested in sports, not personal drama。 。。。more

Arguably the greatest coach in NBA history, Phil Jackson details his coaching philosophy gathered from a plethora of mostly Eastern philosophy learned throughout his life & experience on the basketball court as a player。 Growing up in a catholic household but adapting Buddhism practices later on in life。The book goes through into detail how he led the Bulls & Lakers, on way to three separate 3-peats。 Coaching & managing superstars and personalities Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Arguably the greatest coach in NBA history, Phil Jackson details his coaching philosophy gathered from a plethora of mostly Eastern philosophy learned throughout his life & experience on the basketball court as a player。 Growing up in a catholic household but adapting Buddhism practices later on in life。The book goes through into detail how he led the Bulls & Lakers, on way to three separate 3-peats。 Coaching & managing superstars and personalities Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O’Neal, & Kobe Bryant。 The book has a lot of valuable takeaways for readers not just in sport but in life。 。。。more

Reading this book feels like taking a journey with one of the most sound people in history。 A must read for everyone。The book does not feel like a book, it feels like a conversation。 A conversation with one of the great coaches and leaders from basketball。 Reading this book has provided me with the much needed wisdom I was looking for。 Surely, one of my top 5 favourites。
