Summary

Before The Matrix, before Star Wars, before Ender’s Game and Neuromancer, there was Dune, one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written。

Melange, or ‘spice’, is the most valuable – and rarest – element in the universe。 And it can only be found on a single planet: the inhospitable desert world Arrakis。

Whoever controls Arrakis controls the spice。 And whoever controls the spice controls the universe。

When stewardship of Arrakis is transferred to his house, Paul Atreides must travel to the planet’s dangerous surface to ensure the future of his family and his people。 But as malevolent forces explode into conflict around him, Paul is thrust into a great destiny beyond his understanding。

And in this game of power, only those who can conquer their fear will survive。

The first time I started reading Dune was back when I was 14 and the book was too complicated for me。 After seeing the new movie I just couldn't wait to get back to Herberts' novel and see if I like it better now。 And yes I do。 By far one of the best sci-fi novels I've read。 The first time I started reading Dune was back when I was 14 and the book was too complicated for me。 After seeing the new movie I just couldn't wait to get back to Herberts' novel and see if I like it better now。 And yes I do。 By far one of the best sci-fi novels I've read。 。。。more

I have spent the last 2 months immersing myself in this world of spice, politics, religion, sand, and worms only to come out with a newfound favourite book。 This book is highly regarded as a classic and one of the best science fiction novels of all time for good reason。 Never before have I read a book so dense and rich in its storytelling。 For the first 100 pages or so I was extremely confused。 I was thrown into this world with no context and Frank Herbert didn’t bother with any exposition。 He w I have spent the last 2 months immersing myself in this world of spice, politics, religion, sand, and worms only to come out with a newfound favourite book。 This book is highly regarded as a classic and one of the best science fiction novels of all time for good reason。 Never before have I read a book so dense and rich in its storytelling。 For the first 100 pages or so I was extremely confused。 I was thrown into this world with no context and Frank Herbert didn’t bother with any exposition。 He was just throwing made up terminology at you as if it was a pre established language that the reader should’ve already known。 Once I got over that hump and became acquainted with the terminology and the vast amount of characters the book became a breeze。 I was so engaged in the story that I couldn’t put it down。 Themes of religion, heroism, power, politics, environmental destruction, fate, and so much more run rampant throughout the story and anchor this science fiction tale to feel much more grounded and relatable。 Frank Herbert obviously loves this world he created so much and that just bleeds through every paragraph。 He describes these landscapes and scenes with such sophistication and care。 While it did take me a while to get through this (I’ve also had it sitting on my shelf since December of last year) I can’t say this is one that you would want to rush through。 It’s a book where allowing yourself to take your time with this world and it’s characters will only make reaching the end a more rewarding experience。 。。。more

This book was so unique and unlike anything I’d ever read! Parts 1 and 2 were so fun and phenomenal but part 3 felt rushed (maybe because I was speed reading it in the theater lol) and I feel like I missed out on a TON of character development because it jumped so many years。 But overall I quite enjoyed the book!!

A true epic in the science-fiction genre。 This book was a rollercoaster for me, obviously brought upon the need to read the book before seeing the movie。 I guess I should thank Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet for making me read this book faster (aka short TBR vs long TBR list)。Starting off this book I felt like I would never get the hang of it, but I slowly came around。 Get ready for a lot of different words, but it does get better! One of the things I did not like about this book was the way it wa A true epic in the science-fiction genre。 This book was a rollercoaster for me, obviously brought upon the need to read the book before seeing the movie。 I guess I should thank Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet for making me read this book faster (aka short TBR vs long TBR list)。Starting off this book I felt like I would never get the hang of it, but I slowly came around。 Get ready for a lot of different words, but it does get better! One of the things I did not like about this book was the way it was written in regards to points of view and thoughts。 It was not easily discernable when characters were thinking to themselves。 For instance, it would start off with Paul and his thoughts, and then immediately switch to Chani or to Jessica, but not be completely clear it was their thoughts until the end of the though。 IF that makes any sense。 For the better part of the book I thought the Duke and Jessica were telepathic because of how fast the thoughts changed point of view。 Anyways, this book covered a lot of time, which I did not expect。 I enjoyed the political aspects of this book more than I thought I would, because I usually hate them, but when you get the trope of "the man vs the system" it really makes me care, apparently。 lolOkay, one of the other things that was a little out of place were the main character names。 I felt a little upset that I was reading an intense science-fiction book and their names were common。。。。 he was using words like Bene Gesserit, Atreides, etc, and their names were Paul, Jessica, and Duncan- but that could be a me thing。 This book it a beast。 It is long the characters are interesting to an extent。 It feels very face-value and not multi-dimensional when it comes to their personalities, but they are an interesting read。 I feel as if this book sets up the others, because I wasn't really compelled to keep reading the series, but that ending made me go "welllllllll I think I need to read the next one at least"。 I know the movie (2021) only covers about the first half-ish of the book and it does it pretty well。 However, reading the whole book will help fill in some of what the movie alludes to。 。。。more

Not written amazingly but entertaining and pretty good ideas。 The chosen one shtick (even though it likely originated from here) seemed like it was going to be tired, but Paul is actually a much more interesting character than I initially expected。 A Lawrence of Arabia type messiah to the Arab people of arrakis whose goal throughout most isn’t even to overthrow the oppressive empire/harkonnen family but to stop the jihad that he knows will be set into motion by his future self。 Didn’t expect him Not written amazingly but entertaining and pretty good ideas。 The chosen one shtick (even though it likely originated from here) seemed like it was going to be tired, but Paul is actually a much more interesting character than I initially expected。 A Lawrence of Arabia type messiah to the Arab people of arrakis whose goal throughout most isn’t even to overthrow the oppressive empire/harkonnen family but to stop the jihad that he knows will be set into motion by his future self。 Didn’t expect him to be the villain at all but you can tell that’s where Herbert is going with it by the end; he has said that he was mainly warning people about blindly following and praising personable leaders。 Also like the ecological aspect。 Not crazy deep or anything but just a call to not squander our resources or we will likely regress to a feudal system wherein the powerful will do anything to maintain control over Earth’s spice equivalent。 Really an interesting vision of the structure of our future society。 Just some cool ideas in this thing and the desert planet aesthetic rules。 Probably won’t check out the rest; god emperor of dune sounds interesting (especially Duncan Idaho climbing a mountain and giving a girl an orgasm; Herbert is a horny dude holy) but the rest seem a bit less interesting and more like plot driven space operas。 I’ve gotten what I want out of it and definitely appreciate the series。 。。。more

This is so Masterpiece! Because I am falling in the story about another planet which it has all over desert how the people survive and fought against each other, and how they rule all over the planet。 This is how fantastic that Frank Herbert wrote the Science Fiction novel。

DNF at 11%。 My god it is so dry and preachy。 All the characters have the slowest inner monologues that drag on like nothing I’ve ever seen。 The world building is atrociously bad too。 As is the writing。 Maybe this was good when it came out in the 60s but thankfully, we have much better books out now。

I actually tried to read this story a couple of times。 It just would not grow on me。 I am not saying that it is bad and that it should not be read。 Not in the lease。 Just that for me, I couldn't connect with the written version。I did watch the 1980s film and a couple of the directors cuts after that。 I skipped the Sci-Fi channel's miserable excuse for a mini series after about 30 minutes。 But, I am excited to view the 2021 theatrical version, which at the time of this posting will be tomorrow。 S I actually tried to read this story a couple of times。 It just would not grow on me。 I am not saying that it is bad and that it should not be read。 Not in the lease。 Just that for me, I couldn't connect with the written version。I did watch the 1980s film and a couple of the directors cuts after that。 I skipped the Sci-Fi channel's miserable excuse for a mini series after about 30 minutes。 But, I am excited to view the 2021 theatrical version, which at the time of this posting will be tomorrow。 So with that said, I think the story itself is brilliant, but not one that I can follow in book form。 。。。more

me and my invisalign-induced dry mouth would not last three seconds on arrakis。honestly in a time where the quality of a book is so dependent on plot twists, I respect a book that basically tells you what is going to happen and is still enjoyable。 foreshadowing is still cool, kids。

Wow。 This book is an absolute masterpiece。 Jaw-dropping in it's scope and world-building。 A fascinating mixture of fantasy and sci-fi。 The author, through some magic, was able to craft long stretches of dialogue as intensely as the scenes of epic action。 While the plot is slow to roll due to the sudden immersion into this universe with little to no hand-holding, once the reader gets their bearings and the conflict fully emerges, it is a near non-stop breathtaking ride with twist after twist。 Wow。 This book is an absolute masterpiece。 Jaw-dropping in it's scope and world-building。 A fascinating mixture of fantasy and sci-fi。 The author, through some magic, was able to craft long stretches of dialogue as intensely as the scenes of epic action。 While the plot is slow to roll due to the sudden immersion into this universe with little to no hand-holding, once the reader gets their bearings and the conflict fully emerges, it is a near non-stop breathtaking ride with twist after twist。 。。。more

This book felt like game of thrones but set in a faraway future。 I really enjoyed reading it and was surprised at how well it held up despite being written in the 1960s。 I can see how many science fiction books looked to dune as inspiration。 The world building in this book is insane I don’t think I’ve read a book with as complex of description of the world。 I am so excited to see the movie now that I’ve read the book。
