Summary

Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel

When the department store she works in closes for good, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options。 She doesn’t want to move in with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered Edinburgh life。

Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want Carmen there either。 Her sister has always been sarcastic and difficult。 But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs a retail assistant for his ailing bookshop, so welcoming Carmen might still have some benefits for everyone。

At Sofia’s behest, Carmen is thrown into the daily workings of old Mr。 McCredie’s ancient bookshop on the streets of the old dark city。 Can she use her design skills to revamp the store and bring it back to popularity in time to benefit from Christmas shopping traffic? Can she choose between bad boy literary rock star Blair and quiet Quaker student Oke? And will she heal the rift with the most important people of all: her family?

Jenny Colgan has written many books that involve books, bookshops, cupcakes, and bakeshops - all some of my favorite things。 I enjoyed reading The Christmas Bookshop and liked the characters。 I found that the story was not as much of a Christmas story as I originally thought。 Yes, Christmas was a part of the setting but not the focus。 If you enjoy reading a sweet romance set in places that take you away from your everyday life, I think you would enjoy this book。 You don't even have to read it at Jenny Colgan has written many books that involve books, bookshops, cupcakes, and bakeshops - all some of my favorite things。 I enjoyed reading The Christmas Bookshop and liked the characters。 I found that the story was not as much of a Christmas story as I originally thought。 Yes, Christmas was a part of the setting but not the focus。 If you enjoy reading a sweet romance set in places that take you away from your everyday life, I think you would enjoy this book。 You don't even have to read it at Christmas-time! 3。5 stars 。。。more

This is my first book by Jenny Colgan, so I cannot compare to her others, but I found it absolutely delightful from beginning to end。 I was concerned it might seem saccharine or formulaic, but there was no sign of either one。When Carmen is laid off from a dying department store, her seemingly perfect sister with her perfect family and her perfect life invites her to Edinburgh and a job helping a client salvage his bookshop business。 Seeing no other options to hand, Carmen swallows her pride and This is my first book by Jenny Colgan, so I cannot compare to her others, but I found it absolutely delightful from beginning to end。 I was concerned it might seem saccharine or formulaic, but there was no sign of either one。When Carmen is laid off from a dying department store, her seemingly perfect sister with her perfect family and her perfect life invites her to Edinburgh and a job helping a client salvage his bookshop business。 Seeing no other options to hand, Carmen swallows her pride and prepares to get along with her now enormously pregnant sister, and。。。 interesting things happen。 Lots of interesting things。 Full of lots of interesting people behaving like normal people (both sensible and silly, sometimes at the same time)。 Three children who behaved like children, and, like Carmen, you discovered that was just fine too。 Really, for a Christmas read it was quite ideal。 A touch of romance, but the relationship of the sisters was more important by far。 The Edinburgh setting was put to great use, and may set some readers to plotting their next vacation。 A lovely surprise。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Another fantastic book from Jenny Colgan。 The descriptions of walking through Edinburgh are so lovely and make wish I could go and visit and the setting of the book shop is perfection。 Absolutely wonderful!

A wonderful warm Christmas story。 Edinburgh sounded picture perfect and I loved the descriptions of Carmen’s walk to work each day at the bookshop。 Her relationship with Mr McCredie was lovely and I found myself loving how Carmen opened up to Sofia and the children。

Donna

This was a very charming book, it reminds me of those romance movies you see around Christmas time。 The setting was wonderful and I love how the author taught you a little about the cities history and sights。 It was a very lighthearted and quick read for me。

I rather liked The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan。 I will say it was probably not one of my favorites but, I still really liked it。 She writes about Scotland in this book and I've found myself reading several books based in Scotland in the last year。 I seem to be drawn to that area。 This story is about Carmen, a young woman who always feels like an outcast in her own family。 She doesn't go on to college like her sister and then loses the only job she's ever had during a bad economy。 I think I rather liked The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan。 I will say it was probably not one of my favorites but, I still really liked it。 She writes about Scotland in this book and I've found myself reading several books based in Scotland in the last year。 I seem to be drawn to that area。 This story is about Carmen, a young woman who always feels like an outcast in her own family。 She doesn't go on to college like her sister and then loses the only job she's ever had during a bad economy。 I think there are a lot of women that can sympathize with her。 Her sister is pregnant with number four。 She needs help and she has found a part-time job for Carmen。 I felt really bad for her but, good thing start to happen!I became immersed in her surroundings in Edinburgh。 I love the history and some of the characters。 Some of her many characters were not very developed but, they didn't need to be。 I liked Carmen and her eccentric boss Mr。 McCredie who owns a rare and antique bookshop。 He is pretty interesting。 We met a snobby author who was really kind of funny。 At least the circumstances were。 There are so many interesting happenings that keep this book interesting。 I would recommend this book for any Jenny Colgan fan or anyone that enjoys something a little different once in a while。 I received a complimentary copy of this book from #WilliamMorrow #CustomHouse and #Netgalley。 Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own。 。。。more

This is a beautifully festive book set in Edinburgh with Christmas just around the corner and lots of snow and magic in the air。 Our leading lady, Carmen, took a while to grow on me 。 She was quite a negative person at the start with little social life, no job and no romance in her life and feeling quite sorry for herself。 When she is invited by her posh sister, Sophia, to move to Edinburgh to work in a local bookshop which is pretty much dead in the wood, she reluctantly takes up the offer。 The This is a beautifully festive book set in Edinburgh with Christmas just around the corner and lots of snow and magic in the air。 Our leading lady, Carmen, took a while to grow on me 。 She was quite a negative person at the start with little social life, no job and no romance in her life and feeling quite sorry for herself。 When she is invited by her posh sister, Sophia, to move to Edinburgh to work in a local bookshop which is pretty much dead in the wood, she reluctantly takes up the offer。 The Bookshop run by an elderly man who prefers reading in the backroom to selling in the shop is in urgent need of modernising and Carmen has the task of turning things around before Christmas arrives! The bookshop owner is a lovely character and I enjoyed reading about him and his sad but fascinating back story。 Carmen, who has no idea of how to react with children soon finds herself being won over by her sister's three little ones and succeeds where the nanny, nasty Skyla, fails。 Also into the mix comes a famous but extremely selfish and egotistical author who shows an interest in Carmen - but is it genuine or selfishly motivated? The mysterious, quirky but lovely Oke is a kind and gentle man and there are hints of romance throughout the book but will anything come of it? It isn't until the final part of the book that this part of the story begins to unfold and I loved the latter part of the book more than the start - so much so that Id love there to be a follow up as I feel there is a lot more to Oke that readers would love to know。 As the story progressed I found myself warming to Carmen who began to blossom in her new surroundings and became a much nicer and more positive woman。 I enjoyed this story very much and would recommend it to anyone looking for a gentle, humorous and festive tale for Christmas reading。 My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for my honest and unbiased review。 。。。more

I really wanted to love this book。 About 50 pages in, I was hoping to just like it, I didn't。 It was very hard to get though。 I would have put it down but I won it in a giveaway and felt obligated to finish it and review it。 It was funny at times but the main character was very annoying and childish。 I did like how she evolved through the book。 Maybe it was just my frame of mind, or I was not in the right place to read this book。 I really wanted to love this book。 About 50 pages in, I was hoping to just like it, I didn't。 It was very hard to get though。 I would have put it down but I won it in a giveaway and felt obligated to finish it and review it。 It was funny at times but the main character was very annoying and childish。 I did like how she evolved through the book。 Maybe it was just my frame of mind, or I was not in the right place to read this book。 。。。more

I feel so terrible leaving such a low review, but I genuinely loathed this book。 Do not pick this up if you are looking for a magical Christmas book。 Don't pick this up if you're looking for a heartwarming romance。 And certainly don't pick this up if you want excitement, multi-dimensional characters or even just an interesting story。 I was completely bored by this book and not at all invested in any of the 1-note characters, or anything they were doing, really。 Thank you to #Netgalley and #Willi I feel so terrible leaving such a low review, but I genuinely loathed this book。 Do not pick this up if you are looking for a magical Christmas book。 Don't pick this up if you're looking for a heartwarming romance。 And certainly don't pick this up if you want excitement, multi-dimensional characters or even just an interesting story。 I was completely bored by this book and not at all invested in any of the 1-note characters, or anything they were doing, really。 Thank you to #Netgalley and #WilliamMorrow for a complimentary ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

Jenny Colgan’s The Christmas Bookshop is the story of Carmen who moves to Edinburgh to work and live with her sister’s family。 While there, Carmen works in a bookshop that is in great need of help。 From the bookshop to the characters, The Christmas Bookshop shows that first appearances aren’t always correct。 A lovely and well-written story that shows the magic of the Christmas season。

Jenny Colgan has combined my two favorite things into one very enjoyable read! Holiday season and bookshops! Two sisters, Carmen and Sofia work out bumps in their relationship in a setting as charming as one found in the Christmas movie, The Holiday。 Of course my favorite “character” is the bookshop itself。 Highly recommend adding this to your list of books to give and even better?
