This is a very good graphic novels for all ages。 I really like how the author describe anxiety and depression in such a simple way。 Shannon definitely knows how to make you feel nostalgia just using a few words。 Not to mention the incredible art style that made me buy all three volumes at once。 Everyone should read it。

Excellent like the first two in the series, but more mature than the first two。 It addresses some topics more appropriate for middle school like dating and underage drinking。 I still plan to put it on my elementary school shelf, because I think the messages about mental health are important, and some of our upper elementary kids may really need that。

I received this as a Goodreads Giveaway。I thought this was an adorable book and it's perfect for middle school students。 It touches on many topics that plague teens such as body image, popularity, family life, dating, anxiety, and more。 It's a fun read and I like that it's written from the point of view of an 8th grade student - it makes you feel like you're really along the ride with her and you're also a student in her middle school。 The graphics are great and I think it widely appeals to many I received this as a Goodreads Giveaway。I thought this was an adorable book and it's perfect for middle school students。 It touches on many topics that plague teens such as body image, popularity, family life, dating, anxiety, and more。 It's a fun read and I like that it's written from the point of view of an 8th grade student - it makes you feel like you're really along the ride with her and you're also a student in her middle school。 The graphics are great and I think it widely appeals to many teens。 There are some great morals and takeaways from the book for teens and older readers alike, such as "you are enough。" 。。。more

I received this book as a Giveway copy but I went to my local library and read it beforehand because I could not wait。 Shannon Hale does it again! An excellent graphic novel memoir that explores mental health, the stress and pressure put on middle school girls (both then - 1980s - and unfortunately still relevant today), and the ups and downs of middle school life。 You don't need to have read the other books in the series。 Loved it。 An excellent graphic novel memoir that explores mental health, the stress and pressure put on middle school girls (both then - 1980s - and unfortunately still relevant today), and the ups and downs of middle school life。 You don't need to have read the other books in the series。 Loved it。 。。。more

So good! I'm really digging these middles school graphic novels。 I feel my life could have been quite a bit different had I read something like this when I was in middle school, and probably could have gotten help for some of my issues。 So good! This brought back uncomfortable memories from middle school and so wasn't nearly as enjoyable as earlier entries in series。 And with character Shannon now in 8th grade, the events skew a little more mature。 This brought back uncomfortable memories from middle school and so wasn't nearly as enjoyable as earlier entries in series。 And with character Shannon now in 8th grade, the events skew a little more mature。 。。。more

This is the third installment of Shannon Hale’s graphic novel coming-of-age memoirs and I wouldn’t hand this one to anyone younger than middle school。 Shannon is an eighth grader now and a couple scenes deal with unwanted sexual advances from boys/men during a time when she feels unliked by boys when everyone else is “going with” someone。 Most poignant to me still are her interactions with her family, who continually make her feel “too sensitive”, disappointed when she shows emotion, and nagging This is the third installment of Shannon Hale’s graphic novel coming-of-age memoirs and I wouldn’t hand this one to anyone younger than middle school。 Shannon is an eighth grader now and a couple scenes deal with unwanted sexual advances from boys/men during a time when she feels unliked by boys when everyone else is “going with” someone。 Most poignant to me still are her interactions with her family, who continually make her feel “too sensitive”, disappointed when she shows emotion, and nagging her to just be happy。 We still see her inner turmoil with her OCD/anxious thoughts and a lot more of where they intersect with her religious upbringing in the (Mormon) church in this book。 8th grade Shannon also grapples with her future as a woman, the messages from church and parents that her worth is in motherhood。 The author’s note at the end is an absolute must-read and I give it five stars。 。。。more

As with the earlier books in the series, this does a good job of handling some very important subjects for middle schoolers and, well, any age。 Anxiety can really take a toll, and seeing how Shannon is unsupported in her feelings was really hard。 But it was also a good depiction of how people often feel about about individuals with anxiety。 As the parent of a child who is very anxious, it is really a struggle sometimes to relate and understand。 And there is a fine line between coddling and suppo As with the earlier books in the series, this does a good job of handling some very important subjects for middle schoolers and, well, any age。 Anxiety can really take a toll, and seeing how Shannon is unsupported in her feelings was really hard。 But it was also a good depiction of how people often feel about about individuals with anxiety。 As the parent of a child who is very anxious, it is really a struggle sometimes to relate and understand。 And there is a fine line between coddling and supporting which is not easy to distinguish。 The feelings Shannon expresses in the book are real, and they are really well presented。 And all of her relationships and how each contributes to her feelings both good and bad 。。。。 A great follow up and a really good read for anyone whose child may be going through some of the same things。 。。。more

In the third installment of the semi-autobiographical graphic novel "Friends" series by Shannon Hale, Shannon is juggling friends, families, and feelings about boys。While I skipped out on the second installment, this third one (set in the 8th grade) takes a much more mature leap。 There's boys, making out, alcohol, and even sexual harassment。 I understand that 1。 this took place in '87, when adults were more lenient and dismissive about many pre-teen issues and 2。 that this is a middle grade grap In the third installment of the semi-autobiographical graphic novel "Friends" series by Shannon Hale, Shannon is juggling friends, families, and feelings about boys。While I skipped out on the second installment, this third one (set in the 8th grade) takes a much more mature leap。 There's boys, making out, alcohol, and even sexual harassment。 I understand that 1。 this took place in '87, when adults were more lenient and dismissive about many pre-teen issues and 2。 that this is a middle grade graphic novel and therefore more geared towards middle school aged children。 But the way in which several issues were addressed just rubbed me the wrong way。 The telling the humiliating stories of the honored students of the month was terrible。 What adult would ever think that's a good idea? And then a girl getting in trouble for BEING pantsed? Instead of the boys pulling her pants down being, I don't know, expelled maybe? Not to mention the sexual harassment of a couple of thirteen year old girls by a mall Santa!!! These were just a handful of the issues that were very glossed over and not necessarily broached as well as they could have been。 I appreciated the self-love reminders and Shannon standing up for women's rights, but this was a somewhat uncomfortable/confusing read if trying to put myself in the shoes of some of the 4th and 5th graders in my school that would pick this up。。。 。。。more

Shannon Hale writes so well and I loved this graphic novel as much as the first two。 Like a balm for my soul, this feel good story included so many relatable moments from my own childhood and was such a breath of fresh air。 I couldn’t recommend these enough。

wow。 this book was so much better than what i expected。 i love this graphic novel series so much, and this one has to be my favorite。 it’s almost like the author opened my brain and took all my memories and experiences right from me, and put it on the page。 i related to a bit too much of what shannon went through。 even though i’m just starting high school, i remember feeling anxious, depressed, and experiencing symptoms of OCD all the time, but thinking that was “normal”。 it’s so cool to see tha wow。 this book was so much better than what i expected。 i love this graphic novel series so much, and this one has to be my favorite。 it’s almost like the author opened my brain and took all my memories and experiences right from me, and put it on the page。 i related to a bit too much of what shannon went through。 even though i’m just starting high school, i remember feeling anxious, depressed, and experiencing symptoms of OCD all the time, but thinking that was “normal”。 it’s so cool to see that my feelings weren’t the only one, and that many other people have felt that way when they were in elementary and middle school。 but anyways i have literal tears in my eyes as i write this, so i’m going to leave my favorite quote from the acknowledgments here:“there were so many things i yearned for, but ultimately what i wanted was just to feel okay。” 。。。more

I loved this book so much! I read it in one day。 I could relate on so many levels to Shannon's middle school experience。 I like how each book in the series has a theme of sorts。 I'm glad she kept a shoebox full of middle school notes passed back and forth to help her get into middle school mode again。 She said in the author's note that 95% of the book was based on stories from her own life。 And the illustrations were fantastic, too。 Loved it! I've really enjoyed reading Shannon Hale's graphic novels about the trials she faced growing up, making friends, and battling her own insecurities。 This volume takes place in Shannon's eight grade year, so over a year since the last one left off。 I did not expect this one to grow so dark towards the end when Shannon is dealing with depression and struggling with her own spiraling thoughts。 Definitely recommend to all middle school and young readers。 I've really enjoyed reading Shannon Hale's graphic novels about the trials she faced growing up, making friends, and battling her own insecurities。 This volume takes place in Shannon's eight grade year, so over a year since the last one left off。 I did not expect this one to grow so dark towards the end when Shannon is dealing with depression and struggling with her own spiraling thoughts。 Definitely recommend to all middle school and young readers。 。。。more
