This book once again affirms my love for Simon Rich’s writing！ Funny， warm， triumphant， and as noted by many， surprisingly poetic。 Particularly loved “Screwball”。 Rich takes the prosaic and elevates to hilarious heights。 Rarely do I laugh out loud while reading comedy， but I guffawed a ton with New Teeth。

The description of the stories contained in this book were too odd to pass up。 I really enjoyed the first half or so of the book， but the last couple stories were a bit flat after the utterly unique ones before it。 By far， my favorite two stories were LaserDisc and The Big Nap。 The protagonists were so unexpected and the tone of both the narrators and the author behind it were so unlike anything I've ever read that I just loved it。 How can a 2 year old have the personality of a grizzled noir det The description of the stories contained in this book were too odd to pass up。 I really enjoyed the first half or so of the book， but the last couple stories were a bit flat after the utterly unique ones before it。 By far， my favorite two stories were LaserDisc and The Big Nap。 The protagonists were so unexpected and the tone of both the narrators and the author behind it were so unlike anything I've ever read that I just loved it。 How can a 2 year old have the personality of a grizzled noir detective？ How can disc-reader technology be so humanized？ There's even mutant gorillas and pirate parents。。。 I think the latter half of the book was a bit of a letdown just because it had such "normal" content in comparison to the opening stories; I got used to the humor vibes only to have them taken away from the last couple stories。 。。。more

。。。 I was pleasantly surprised upon reading the September 12th edition of the NYT Book Review。 It featured The Shortlist， a compendium of story collections; this week reviewed by Mateo Askaripour， author of the outstanding debut novel， Black Buck， "an irresistible comic novel about the tenacity of racism in corporate America。"He too found Simon Rich's latest collection of quirk and mirth to be composed of "some of the most inventive plots you'll ever read，" further citing the work to be as "inst 。。。 I was pleasantly surprised upon reading the September 12th edition of the NYT Book Review。 It featured The Shortlist， a compendium of story collections; this week reviewed by Mateo Askaripour， author of the outstanding debut novel， Black Buck， "an irresistible comic novel about the tenacity of racism in corporate America。"He too found Simon Rich's latest collection of quirk and mirth to be composed of "some of the most inventive plots you'll ever read，" further citing the work to be as "instructive as it is imaginative，" and containing "morals that are never planted too deeply for a reader to spot。"Learning the Ropes is certainly my favorite。 Imagine two pirates; one to be lactose intolerant， "so there be certain things he can't be eating，" the other with a parrot on his shoulder， "which always be saying "Shiver me timbers，" which be a pretty pirate thing to say。"After making the crew of a ship they hornswoggled， walk the plank， these two become unwilling surrogate parents to a 3-year old girl stowaway， who soon has the pirates wrapped around her finger。 Of course， after they decided not to throw her overboard。The dynamics of parenting while charting a bloody course across the briny blue， searching for The Dead Man's Chest， is its own sendup。 "And when the little girl saw me， she held up her hands and said "Up？" 。。。 and I said， real ominous-like， "Arr， I be lifting you up all right。"And she smiled because she be too young for understanding subtext。"Rich， who's written for SNL， Pixar， and The Simpsons， also scores with The Big Nap: think Chandler's The Big Sleep。 Now picture Marlowe as an infant。This is New Teeth。 。。。 and it's a delight。 。。。more

I’ve read quite a few of rich’s other books， and while no one could ever accuse him of being a purveyor of high art， he was definitely a consistent purveyor of slick silly laughs。 Judging by this new one though， he may have run out of gas。 Everything just felt really trite and dumb。 I’m not saying don’t read him。 Just don’t read this one。 :-）

I was super excited to read this book as I really needed some laughter during this year。 But this book was a total disappointment。 I do not like writing negative reviews since someone poured their heart and soul into creating something they are proud of。 When I do write a negative review I like to at least say something positive about but I honestly can't find anything good to say about this book。One thing I can say is it is a easy， short read （I finished it in an afternoon since it was so short I was super excited to read this book as I really needed some laughter during this year。 But this book was a total disappointment。 I do not like writing negative reviews since someone poured their heart and soul into creating something they are proud of。 When I do write a negative review I like to at least say something positive about but I honestly can't find anything good to say about this book。One thing I can say is it is a easy， short read （I finished it in an afternoon since it was so short）。 But I also felt like 10 year old wrote it。 I didn't laugh once while reading but I cringed a lot。 I think my favorite story was the pirate story at the beginning。 It was cute。 Overall， super disappointed but if you are into the cringe worthy comedy this might be a book up your alley。 🤷♀️ 。。。more
