Summary

The Flesh and Fire series is set in the beloved Blood and Ash world。

Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers。 Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort。

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania—she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission—one target。 Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him。 If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot。

Sera has always known what she is。 Chosen。 Consort。 Assassin。 Weapon。 A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood。 A monster。 Until him。 Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her。 And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him。 But Sera has never had a choice。 Either way, her life is forfeit—it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death。

I always find the hardest part of writing a review is the beginning, you know what I mean? I have all the opinions ready to go in my brain, but then having to mould that into sense that’s the killer。。 anyone else feel like that? No? Just me? Ok let’s dive in。 I love the FB&A series but I was little apprehensive in starting this book - its almost a full set of new characters to learn about that somehow ties in with the main book - I mean how was that going to even work? However Jennifer really did pull it out of the bag。 I’m just going to say it now, there is a lot of info dumping which makes the story feel a little heavy but I think that is the main point of this book right - to give us some background on what will happen going forward in TWOTQ。 So many things from FB&A make sense now like my MIND IS BLOWN… Hang on I’m getting way ahead of myself。 So Sera, probably one of the most unique characters I’ve read, so very different from Poppy also similar at the same time。 I think I may even prefer her to Poppy。 I enjoyed her mindset and how she sees the world。。 it was a refreshing change seeing things through her perspective。 Just like Sera the Primal of Death is just as complex。 I would have loved some scenes from his perspective - I’m really interested in his thoughts and feelings because is actions were so interesting and sometimes really unexpected for what he is。 The spice level was on another level - it was all in the little details。。 ahh I just loved it - the chemistry was instant and the love part was a long slow burn *Chefs kiss* I loved the world building and discovering what things were like before From Blood and Ash。 In a Nutshell。。 This story was damn good。 If I could give it more than 5 stars I would。 。。。more

The prequel series I didn’t know I needed。 I was initially disappointed that JLA was released a prequel before the fourth book of FBAA, but I ended up really liking this book。 I had so many questions after the conclusion of book three, and JLA has started to answer a lot of those questions in this book。 I was also pleasantly surprised that Sera and Nyktos weren’t carbon copies of Poppy and Casteel。 Can’t wait for book two。 Side note: spicy, but not a court of silver flames spicy。

Actual rating is 4。5 stars。I got an E-ARC copy of this amazing story in exchange for an honest review by JLA, so I'm about to get real with you!It should come as no surprise to all of you that once again, queen JLA is releasing another book series and she killed it!I mean it's hard for me to describe to you how good it was, because it's like I've said this at least 20 times with Armentrout's books, they are great。 There is nothing less to it, every story she puts out, it's just amazing (to me an Actual rating is 4。5 stars。I got an E-ARC copy of this amazing story in exchange for an honest review by JLA, so I'm about to get real with you!It should come as no surprise to all of you that once again, queen JLA is releasing another book series and she killed it!I mean it's hard for me to describe to you how good it was, because it's like I've said this at least 20 times with Armentrout's books, they are great。 There is nothing less to it, every story she puts out, it's just amazing (to me anyway。)A Shadow in the Ember is no exception。You might be questioning my rating if literally paragraphs ago I said it's an amazing book, and it is, but there were a couple of things I felt a bit repetitive。Sera and Nyktos remind me of a couple Armentrout already introduced us to。 They are amazing on their own way, but at the beginning it felt like rereading one of her other books。  Though it quickly changed,  it still made the first like 20 percent of the book drag on a little bit。But I think the reason why it was a little bit slower to begin with is because of what was to come。I cannot explain to you how good this story is without giving you major spoilers, but I will try。Seraphena is a Maiden。 She was promised to the Primal of Death as his consort。 She has been trained, but not in the way you might think。 She was trained to bring the Primal of Death to his knees。 She is expected to end him。 To use love as a way to end him and end with a century's old debt。Sera is ready for this task, but somehow she fails miserably, why you ask? Because the Primal of Death has no need or want for a consort。 So it's her fault (not really, but that is what she believes,) everyone and their grandmother blames her for it。 So now she is trying to fix it somehow, she has no idea how, but she is looking for a solution。She is a trained assassin, she can kill you in less time that you'd have to blink, so maybe that will help。。。 if it doesn't get her in trouble first (spoiler alert, it does)。This story is all about Sera, about her journey to accept what she really is and what she is worth。 There is a silver-eye-god that's gonna be there and they will have a fun time learning all about her and what she is capable of doing。There is so much that happens in the first installment of this series that if I tried to describe everything about the book, this post would be infinite, so I'll just summarize a little bit some of my favorite parts。There is death, that is something you should expect a lot of, but also some of it it's not in the way you might be thinking of。A silver-eyed god。You can read a few more items of the list of things I absolutely loved about this book, by going to my blog, Then There Were Books。 。。。more

A Shadow in the Ember is the first book in the Flesh and Fire series, a prequel set years prior to the Blood and Ash series giving us the story of the first Maiden, Seraphena and Nyktos。 Little did I know how badly I needed this story before I sat down and devoured over 700 pages in a couple of hours and was left with a book hangover that feels like it’ll never be over。Seraphena was born for one purpose; to save her people from the Rot that is destroying them and become the consort of the Primal A Shadow in the Ember is the first book in the Flesh and Fire series, a prequel set years prior to the Blood and Ash series giving us the story of the first Maiden, Seraphena and Nyktos。 Little did I know how badly I needed this story before I sat down and devoured over 700 pages in a couple of hours and was left with a book hangover that feels like it’ll never be over。Seraphena was born for one purpose; to save her people from the Rot that is destroying them and become the consort of the Primal of Death by making him fall in love with her and then kill him。 Her entire life, she was trained to destroy him。 What Seraphena never expected was to be the one that falls for him。“I knew these were the kinds of kisses I’d read about in those books。 The ones I’d never experienced at The Jade when I sought to ease the restless energy in me。 Because I could do this for hours and never grow tired。”Much like Poppy, Seraphena is another badass female who can hold her own against a tough fight。 But Seraphina also has a family that treats her horribly and a childhood that wasn’t hers, her days filled with training to be a weapon against the Primal。And then there’s the delicious Nyktos who we initially meet in the Blood and Ash series but now in a whole new light。 Mystery and temptation all rolled into one package。 This brings the character to a whole other level, especially when we get to the Shadowlands。 While Seraphena and Nyktos butt heads, the heat and tension radiates from them at every interaction。 Hello slowburn romance!“He drew my head back, as he kissed me like he wouldn’t allow a single part of my mouth to go unexplored。 As if he’d been waiting for ages to do this。”I need so much more and I need it ASAP! Armentrout had me at the edge of my seat the entire time and I could not put the book down。 I loved every second of it because as always, the Queen of romantic fantasy gave us gold! 5+ Stars!!*ARC provided by Social PR Butterfly in exchange for an honest review。* 。。。more

A Shadow in the Ember is book one of the Flesh and Fire series, which is a companion to the Blood and Ash series。This is the story of Nyktos, the Primal of Death, and Sera, his Consort。Nyktos and Sera have never had a choice。 A deal made centuries ago has bound them together。 Trained to become his weakness, Sera must get Nyktos to fall in love with her。 But is the Primal of Death even capable of such an emotion?Nyktos is so much more than The Primal of Death, and there is a reason his people fee A Shadow in the Ember is book one of the Flesh and Fire series, which is a companion to the Blood and Ash series。This is the story of Nyktos, the Primal of Death, and Sera, his Consort。Nyktos and Sera have never had a choice。 A deal made centuries ago has bound them together。 Trained to become his weakness, Sera must get Nyktos to fall in love with her。 But is the Primal of Death even capable of such an emotion?Nyktos is so much more than The Primal of Death, and there is a reason his people feel safe with him。 He is protective and thoughtful。 His sweetness to Sera, and his willingness to give her what she needs, without taking for himself, speaks volumes。 And it also seems like the complete opposite of what one would assume the Primal of Death to actually be like。 He has a conscience and understands what taking a life does to the soul。 But he is also closed off and in need of more。 Don't get me wrong。 He is powerful and dangerous, and he can be eerily calm, detached, and downright scary。 His power is unbelievable and unfathomable。 It's interesting to see Nyktos here after meeting him in TCOGB。 In TCOGB, he seems a little broken (for obvious reasons)。 Here, he is so young and humorous (at times), but he is also jaded and burdened by so many things。 Seeing him open up to Sera is both beautiful and heartbreaking。 Sera was born with a single purpose。 End the Primal and restore life to her kingdom。 She is fiery, unapologetic, and willful。 A complete badass! She is also reckless and impulsive, and seems to have little regard for her own life。 And I get it。 She was raised to be a weapon with an expiration date。But Sera is also lonely underneath her bravado。 A simple, kind gesture from Nyktos begins to unravel everything, and it places her between duty to a kingdom and loyalty to herself and her heart。I absolutely love the connection between Sera and Nyktos。 And I can't get into the why of it without spoilers。 They are so right together, but neither seems to trust easily - or even understand why they cannot seem to stay away。 So many questions from the Blood and Ash series are answered through Nyktos and Sera's story。 There are interesting twists, and I am a fan of the larger world building。 We meet some fascinating characters in this story and learn about the politics of Iliseeum - where things aren't necessarily what they seem to be。I am very much looking forward to book two! 。。。more

Wow。 Just really - WOW。 A Shadow in the Ember completely blew me away。 After devouring the offerings in the Blood and Ash series, I was so excited to dive into the history of the world Armentrout has created, when Gods and Primals still roamed the earth。Promised to the Primal of Death years before her birth, Seraphina was born in the shroud of the Primals, trained to become his consort from birth。 And trained in secret to fight - to be strong enough to stop the Rot killing the lands。 When she wa Wow。 Just really - WOW。 A Shadow in the Ember completely blew me away。 After devouring the offerings in the Blood and Ash series, I was so excited to dive into the history of the world Armentrout has created, when Gods and Primals still roamed the earth。Promised to the Primal of Death years before her birth, Seraphina was born in the shroud of the Primals, trained to become his consort from birth。 And trained in secret to fight - to be strong enough to stop the Rot killing the lands。 When she was rejected by Nyktos at 17, she was distraught, as she was the last hope to save the kingdom。Three years later, a chance encounter with the God Ash set the wheels in motion for the tide to turn in her favor, giving her hope that she could one day save the lands。 Claimed by Nyktos and taken to the land of the Gods, she was awed by the beauty, and the amazing creatures she would meet。 And let me just say, I am completely and utterly enamored of the Draken。 A Shadow in the Ember is filled with new information - the history of the Gods and Primals。 The deviousness of some, the cunning of others。 I was enthralled from the first page to the very last - and good Gods, what an ending。 The turn of tides is brilliant。。。I don't know how to keep my patience for the next book in the thrilling world of Flesh and Fire。 I am on the edge of my seat - anticipating how Nyktos and Sera will triumph over the evil spreading through both the mortal and godly realm。 I need more - like, yesterday! 。。。more

It kept my interest and was an easy read。 I wish JLA could improve her dialogue - it’s too current and juvenile。 She repeats the same jokes。 I appreciate the connections to FBAA, but at the same time, a lot of information is thrown at you。 That said, I enjoyed reading about Sera and Nyktos and I’ll happily continue。 Sometimes reading can be fluffy fun and this fits into that category。

My head is spinning! This book took me on a journey。 There was plenty of good historical lore for From Blood & Ash that was so awesome to finally get into the meat of。 Our heroine Sera is like Poppy on crack, she’s quick with her dagger, and unyielding。 Sera is a stab first, ask questions later type with a backbone that Poppy didn’t necessarily have at first。 Nyktos is delicious, the banter is so much fun and the build is slow with steamy payoffs throughout。 Oh and and and DRAKONS! I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE IN LOVE WITH A BOOK SERIES WORLD THAN。 I HAVE WITH THE FROM BLOOD AND ASH UNIVERSE!!!!!First of Sera, is badass who isn't afraid of death and isn't afraid of standing up to someone more powerful than her。 And Daddy Nyktos wants to protect her from herself and her lack of fear for death。The ending of this book had me screaming because like I need them to fall in love。 I mean based off the FBAA we know they kinda do but still I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE IN LOVE WITH A BOOK SERIES WORLD THAN。 I HAVE WITH THE FROM BLOOD AND ASH UNIVERSE!!!!!First of Sera, is badass who isn't afraid of death and isn't afraid of standing up to someone more powerful than her。 And Daddy Nyktos wants to protect her from herself and her lack of fear for death。The ending of this book had me screaming because like I need them to fall in love。 I mean based off the FBAA we know they kinda do but still 。。。more

So far so good, absolutely love the first three chapters。 What a great set up, they don't oversaturate the story with blood and Ashe details but knowing the context from the other series just makes it so much more juicy! They hop into the main character interactions pretty quickly and it was so hard to put down! Pre-ordered and ready to keep reading on Tuesday, two more days til the release!!! 😍 Will update。 So far so good, absolutely love the first three chapters。 What a great set up, they don't oversaturate the story with blood and Ashe details but knowing the context from the other series just makes it so much more juicy! Ran to Barnes and noble when I saw it was out early even though I preordered the physical book and ebook。 I love this series and now I’m just depressed because I finished it in two days and want to know what happens next。 I love the characters and the plot even more than the original FBAA books!

I could not put this down! I unfortunately had to since I have a job, but oh my lord! That ending! I absolutely love Sera and Nyktos! But that ending was absolutely jaw dropping! Now I’m craving the next book and lord know that’ll be sometime! Thank you JLA for always creating a masterpiece with each page。

A Shadow in the Ember is the prequel to From Blood and Ash。 Taking place many years before From Blood and Ash, it follows Seraphena as she is the chosen consort to the Primal of Death。 However, she has been told and trained her entire life that she was chosen to kill him and it will save her people。 I felt like I was back in FBAA again, this is a story that just doesn’t let go once it grabs you。 Sera is the best character too。 I love that we get a woman with the task of saving her people。 She’s A Shadow in the Ember is the prequel to From Blood and Ash。 Taking place many years before From Blood and Ash, it follows Seraphena as she is the chosen consort to the Primal of Death。 However, she has been told and trained her entire life that she was chosen to kill him and it will save her people。 I felt like I was back in FBAA again, this is a story that just doesn’t let go once it grabs you。 Sera is the best character too。 I love that we get a woman with the task of saving her people。 She’s seriously badass。 However, she cares about her people and wants to do what is best for her people and only her people。 In walks Nyktos。 Yes, the Primal of Death, the man she is expected to trick and kill。 Nyktos comes off crazy hot and a serious alpha male。 These two are both unstoppable!Jennifer L。 Armentrout kills this mystical land。 She’s able to bring such a fanciful world to life and give it this real feel to it。 Not just the world but her characters are extremely real feeling。 Sera is one that you will root for even though you might find yourself liking Nyktos too。 You will like Nyktos as well。 Even in his alpha ways, he’s a man you can’t help but fall for。 This is a series not to miss。 I totally recommend it。 The narration by Stina Nielsen was beyond amazing。 This is the same narrator that brought us the Blood and Ash series and she nails these mystery and fantasy books。Thank you Brilliance Publishing for the complimentary copy of this audiobook with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion。 I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that。。。 my opinions。Check out my Blog: Next Book ReviewCheck out my Facebook Page: Next Book Review Facebook 。。。more
