Summary

As Holo and Lawrence begin the final leg of their journey, Lawrence decides to accompany Holo to her ancient home of Yoitsu, if only to forestall their parting just a bit longer。 Boarding a ship from the port of Lenos (much to the chagrin of the wisewolf, who is none too fond of water!), the pair's fate becomes entangled with that of a boy named Col, whose tale of his circumstances - combined with the gossip of the sailors - leads to a shocking revelation about Holo's homeland!

Feels a bit like an extended short story, but that's not all that bad。 After the events in volume 5, Holo and Lawrence still can't seem to just sit down and talk about their changing relationship - perhaps because neither wants to ask the other to change their plans, perhaps because Holo simply is in a pretty bad place as far as worrying about what she'll find at the journey's end - one of the things that made this series work for me was that there isn't a single simplistic issue, but several th Feels a bit like an extended short story, but that's not all that bad。 After the events in volume 5, Holo and Lawrence still can't seem to just sit down and talk about their changing relationship - perhaps because neither wants to ask the other to change their plans, perhaps because Holo simply is in a pretty bad place as far as worrying about what she'll find at the journey's end - one of the things that made this series work for me was that there isn't a single simplistic issue, but several that intertwine。 Instead of facing their emotions directly, the two protagonists reach a mutual understanding to simply prolong their journey as long as feasible; resulting in them diverting to the south on a rather flimsy rational。 There are some really cute scenes showing Lawrence and Holo's emotional and physical closeness; however for me this got to the point where it was like "just kiss each other already"。 Overall there isn't much "plot" in that volume 6 is basically just the travels southward - unlike the previous volumes this one actually takes place entirely while they are traveling and the emotional drama is nowhere near the level of the previous volume - if reading straight through this is a bit of a welcome chance to decompress。 。。。more

3。5/5Sometimes, this series is really slow。 Like this book, with the ending of the last one, I expected something more than I got here。 I am glad of the ending of this one, though, and what it leads up to。 Biggest problem now, is that I do have book 7, but it is a collection of shorts not directly linked to the main story, and I have no idea when I'll get around to buying the rest! 。。。more

Spice and Wolf volume 6; I was eager to start this one because it is the first volume to go beyond the anime。 The anime was so interesting that I wanted to continue Lawrence and Holo's story。 With their voice actors continuing to speak in my head, it was a lot a fun。 There's a radical change in status quo here。 First of all, there is the introduction of Cole, a little boy who joins the main cast。 He kinda-sorta becomes Lawrence's merchant apprentice but wants to study church law instead in orde Spice and Wolf volume 6; I was eager to start this one because it is the first volume to go beyond the anime。 The anime was so interesting that I wanted to continue Lawrence and Holo's story。 With their voice actors continuing to speak in my head, it was a lot a fun。 There's a radical change in status quo here。 First of all, there is the introduction of Cole, a little boy who joins the main cast。 He kinda-sorta becomes Lawrence's merchant apprentice but wants to study church law instead in order to gain the ability to protect his pagan village。 He's an interesting addition to the duo's dynamics (I had to come up with my own mental voice for him)。 Because of Cole's age, the main cast is basically a family unit now。 Lawrence and Holo are more or less an official couple at this point。 Lawrence's feelings are out in the open but Holo's got this Mayfly December Romance fear。 The economics typical of the series take a backseat as the volume delves more into the leading couple's relationship。 Prime among them is the fact that their journey will be ending soon。 It's intriguing to see continuous development that is also a in-universe delaying tactic。 This is not to say that there are no economics。 On the contrary, it continues。 For instance, Cole's backstory leads into a discussion about the education system in this time period。 There's no publicly funded school system so education is significantly different。 Those who can afford to hire private tutors。 Those who can't pool their money together and hire a wandering scholar。 As far plot, this book picks up directly from the fallout of the last book's climax。 I。E。 they are pursuing someone from the previous book。 Holo sounds like she really wants to sink her teeth into "the vixen"。 This is the second change to status quo。 The third change is how the book starts。 Usually, there is a prologue about the pair traveling in their cart to the next town。 Not n this case。 Leaving Lenos is the prologue。 There's no more cart at all。 They're sailing down a river now。 Isuna Hasekura has written another solid entry for this series。 Trickster Eric Novels gives "Spice and Wolf volume 6" an A+ 。。。more

I fell in love with this series after watching the anime, and picked up this volume to continue the story。 (This is in fact the correct book to continue with。) My main goal was to see what happens in the relationship between Lawrence and Holo after he confesses his love to her。This book would have been 5 stars, but the sometimes awkward writing dragged it down。 I don't think this is just a matter of getting lost in translation, though that could contribute。 I fell in love with this series after watching the anime, and picked up this volume to continue the story。 (This is in fact the correct book to continue with。) My main goal was to see what happens in the relationship between Lawrence and Holo after he confesses his love to her。This book would have been 5 stars, but the sometimes awkward writing dragged it down。 I don't think this is just a matter of getting lost in translation, though that could contribute。 。。。more

Continuing this series where the anime leaves off, I was surprised at the level of skill Isuna Hasekura employs with some of his dialogue。 I would say it's probably the strongest element of his writing。 Most conversations between Lawrence and Holo, though the two may not actually be arguing, come across like a verbal fencing match in that both are trying to get an edge of the other。 Most of it's teasing between the two, but I rather enjoyed the dialogue moments between them。 They were the best p Continuing this series where the anime leaves off, I was surprised at the level of skill Isuna Hasekura employs with some of his dialogue。 I would say it's probably the strongest element of his writing。 Most conversations between Lawrence and Holo, though the two may not actually be arguing, come across like a verbal fencing match in that both are trying to get an edge of the other。 Most of it's teasing between the two, but I rather enjoyed the dialogue moments between them。 They were the best parts of this volume, and I suspect just about any volume in this series。 I was also surprised to realize that this book was also very dialogue driven in that not a lot actually happens as far as action is concerned。 Lawrence and Holo are making their way to the next port town via a river boat and they're aboard it for the vast majority of this volume。 I read it rather quickly since its pretty short。 It only took me two days。 I'm looking forward to continuing the series。 。。。more

I didn't particularly like this one。 All the material feels stretched。 This could easily have been reduced to 2 chapters on books 8/9 where the story continues。 The main characters don't seem to know what they want to do。。。 but then it actually feels like the author is not sure where to go with the story anyway。 Don't get me wrong, the added elements look like they will be interesting, but the book doesn't hold up on its own even with those taken into account。The translation isn't great, with a I didn't particularly like this one。 All the material feels stretched。 This could easily have been reduced to 2 chapters on books 8/9 where the story continues。 The main characters don't seem to know what they want to do。。。 but then it actually feels like the author is not sure where to go with the story anyway。 Don't get me wrong, the added elements look like they will be interesting, but the book doesn't hold up on its own even with those taken into account。The translation isn't great, with a lot of mistakes you can pick up if you read the previous books (some sentences make no sense at all, others actually contradict what was said in other books) 。。。more

This volume continues the trend from volume 5: it actually contains less focus on economics than the previous volume, which had already reduced the amount of economic focus from the average of the first four volumes。 The author even commented on the reduced focus on economics in the afterword, and said he hoped to bring more economics back to the next volume。While I enjoy and appreciate the economic matters that form some of the basis of these stories, I'm not disappointed with this change of pa This volume continues the trend from volume 5: it actually contains less focus on economics than the previous volume, which had already reduced the amount of economic focus from the average of the first four volumes。 The author even commented on the reduced focus on economics in the afterword, and said he hoped to bring more economics back to the next volume。While I enjoy and appreciate the economic matters that form some of the basis of these stories, I'm not disappointed with this change of pace。 The story was as compelling and enjoyable as the rest of the series, even with the novel's slower pace。 In place of the strictly monetary (not monetarist -- just monetary) economics that comprised a significant foundation for plot in previous volumes, it presented other complexities of daily life that encroached on the characters' lives, and that was in its way often as interesting as the economics of previous volumes。There is not much more to say about the differences between this volume and its predecessors without getting into spoiler territory, but it was a good read, it begins to look like there will be more tendency for developing subplots to span multiple volumes (with the economic matters of volume 5 actually still not fully resolved at the end of volume 6), and any concerns over strained suspension of disbelief due to unreasonable frequency and severity of certain types of problems in the characters' lives have been somewhat allayed with the slightly different approach the author has started taking to spicing up plotlines。As always, I look forward to the next volume。 I bought the first six in a single bundle; now I'm going to have to find the rest of them。 。。。more

The sixth volume in the Spice and Wolf series is。。。 relaxed。 I don't have a better way to describe it。Thus far, all of the previous volumes have been fairly formulaic: Lawrence and Holo arrive in new town, a deal opportunity presents itself, Lawrence tries to make money, fails, Holo steps in to save the day, and then Holo and Lawrence end up saving each other。 This formula has worked out well in the past few volumes。 That said, I'm kind of glad that this volume changed things up a bit。Starting w The sixth volume in the Spice and Wolf series is。。。 relaxed。 I don't have a better way to describe it。Thus far, all of the previous volumes have been fairly formulaic: Lawrence and Holo arrive in new town, a deal opportunity presents itself, Lawrence tries to make money, fails, Holo steps in to save the day, and then Holo and Lawrence end up saving each other。 This formula has worked out well in the past few volumes。 That said, I'm kind of glad that this volume changed things up a bit。Starting where the fifth volume left off, Lawrence and Holo are still in Lenos。 However, they come up with a course of action to chase after Eve, who, in the previous volume, betrayed Lawrence after he tried to renege on their deal。 While they do go in the same direction as Eve, volume 6 isn't actually about the chase。I mentioned it before, but this volume is more relaxed。 There's no major plot in here, no person who needs saving, no deal that gets Lawrence in trouble。 It's just Lawrence and Holo traveling down the river with two new characters。One thing I really liked about this novel, and this series as a whole, is how it deals with the fact that Lawrence is a human and Holo is a wolf deity。 A relationship between an immortal and a human can never last。 They both know this。 They both know that the journey must eventually end, but they keep journeying in spite of that。While I mentioned this volume being very relaxed, it was still quite emotional。 And of course, Lawrence still shows his ignorance。 I'm actually somewhat surprised by how Lawrence still seems to get on Holo's bad side。 I'm even more surprised that he couldn't figure out why he upset her and everyone else could。 If there's one failing to this volume, it would be the feeling of having a forced argument for the sake of drama。 It didn't feel natural this time。 That said, it still wasn't enough to take away a star。 。。。more

I thought that this was a nice addition to the series。 After the events of the previous volume, I thought that it was good that the pace was slowed down and that the characters took their time to re-asses what their future plans were going to take them。 I have mixed feelings though with regards to having a third member join the group。 I'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds in the eighth volume (remember that the seventh is a collection of side stories)。 I thought that this was a nice addition to the series。 After the events of the previous volume, I thought that it was good that the pace was slowed down and that the characters took their time to re-asses what their future plans were going to take them。 I have mixed feelings though with regards to having a third member join the group。 I'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds in the eighth volume (remember that the seventh is a collection of side stories)。 。。。more
