A great read。 A lot of the advice in here is relevant towards military leaders, but even more that I think is really relevant to anybody who has a roller leadership in their life。

Although much of the book was self-serving, it reflected Mr。 Powell humane nature。 His candid and honest description of his upbringing as well as his challenges was quite revealing。 I enjoyed the read and increased admiration for our military and governmental leaders。

Just as good the second time around!

While this book wouldn't be described as exciting, it was still a captivating book。 Mr。 Powell gathers his past personal interactions with others and is able to weave them into many leadership learning points。 He was able to convey the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions as well as bringing up the next generation。 He provides plenty of examples of how ordinary Americans can inspire others to be great leaders as well as providing examples of how amazing everyday Americans can be While this book wouldn't be described as exciting, it was still a captivating book。 Mr。 Powell gathers his past personal interactions with others and is able to weave them into many leadership learning points。 He was able to convey the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions as well as bringing up the next generation。 He provides plenty of examples of how ordinary Americans can inspire others to be great leaders as well as providing examples of how amazing everyday Americans can be。 。。。more

Very interesting when talking about his military career, especially his discussion of the lead up to Iraq and his UN speech。 Less interesting when he’s describing his speaking career。

I really enjoyed this audiobook。 General Powell shares his wisdom of his leadership style。 It is incredible that most of the management would learn so much from it。 Unfortunately, the believe that managing by fear is most effective。 General Powell brings a wonderful humor to his storytelling。 Yes, he is the narrator。 I really enjoyed and learned a lot about effective leadership and management。

Highly informative read - reassuring to me that I practiced a decent amount of his advice, learned a decent amount more (including the importance of timing when to "Get off the train"), and even disagreed with a bit but still could appreciate his point of view。 Definitely recommend for all current and future leaders。 Highly informative read - reassuring to me that I practiced a decent amount of his advice, learned a decent amount more (including the importance of timing when to "Get off the train"), and even disagreed with a bit but still could appreciate his point of view。 Definitely recommend for all current and future leaders。 。。。more

Superb reading for anyone in a day to day leadership struggle。 Colin Powell gives us all guidance on what worked for him on the "ladder to success。" This should be a must-read for all leaders, particularly in government and agencies like the Postal Service where the average guy or gal on the deckplate will find that there are too many trivial leaders who were never taught there are no trivial jobs in any successful organization。As a military veteran I can relate to leaders like General Powell。 A Superb reading for anyone in a day to day leadership struggle。 Colin Powell gives us all guidance on what worked for him on the "ladder to success。" This should be a must-read for all leaders, particularly in government and agencies like the Postal Service where the average guy or gal on the deckplate will find that there are too many trivial leaders who were never taught there are no trivial jobs in any successful organization。As a military veteran I can relate to leaders like General Powell。 As a postal employee I have to quote Colin Powell for postal management "You can never err by treating everyone in the building with respect, thoughtfulness, and a kind word," Every one of of our employees is an essential employee。 Every one of them wants to be viewed that way。 They will not let you down or let you fail。 They will accomplish whatever you have put in front of them。"Love the chapter "The Indispensable Person"I enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down。 Got through it over the weekend。 I think you will enjoy it the same way。 It is an easy read with multiple informative chapters。Ka-Ching! Another addition to the professional development library。Thank you for your service to America Mr。 Powell。 Hope to see you again on the "Get Motivated" seminar circuit。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book; the audio version is narrated by Powell himself, which makes it even better。He shares some of his personal stories, giving us a chance to follow the development of his career。 There's some humour, there are insights, failures。 Colin Powell is a great person to hang out with。I like him even more after processing this book。 And yet, as a fellow reader commented, I wish he covered the problem with the "WMDs that were not there" in greater detail。 Considering his experien I really enjoyed this book; the audio version is narrated by Powell himself, which makes it even better。He shares some of his personal stories, giving us a chance to follow the development of his career。 There's some humour, there are insights, failures。 Colin Powell is a great person to hang out with。I like him even more after processing this book。 And yet, as a fellow reader commented, I wish he covered the problem with the "WMDs that were not there" in greater detail。 Considering his experience and the rules he promotes (see notes below about known/unknown/。。。), it seems that he could've easily caught it。 Either he started applying these rules as a consequence of this failure OR he follows the other rule (see "dirty linen" below)。 He is very loyal to his country, and despite the mistakes, he isn't going to throw others under the bus, he prepares his "3 envelopes" instead。This latter point is something worthy of emphasis - he is dedicated to the cause and is willing to make personal sacrifices for the country, prioritizing long-term objectives。Some notes for internal use:# dealing with the press- they get to pick the question, but you get to pick the answer- you don't have to answer any question you don't want to- never lie- beware of being too open- never answer hypothetical questions about the future- never reveal the private advice you have given your superiors- answers should be directed to the message you want readers and viewers to get; the interviewers are not your audience- they're doing your job, you're doing yours, but you're the only one at risk- don't predict or speculate about future events- beware of slang or one-liners, unless you're consciously trying to produce a soundbite- don't wash dirty linen- do not answer any question containing a premise you disagree with- don't push yourself or don't let others push you towards an answer you don't want to give- if trapped - be vague- never cough or shift your feet :-)# dealing with information when solving problemsUnderstand the kind of data you're dealing with or are being provided- what you know- what you don't know- what you think- and distinguish which is which。(in a way, similar to what Rumsfeld said about unknown unknowns)# other points- bad news isn't wine, it won't get better with time。- AAR (after action review), an analysis of what happened, to figure out how to do better next time。- "sorry for the 100 horses vs I can make another general in 5min"。- the 3 envelopes story。- swagger stick - "officers are authorized to carry them, if they see the need"。 。。。more

One of the best books I have ever read, what an amazing speaker。 I bought both the audio book and the physical version。

RespectIn a world full of political hacks, Colin Powell has always been a person who spoke what he believed regardless of who it pleased or displeased。 Our world needs more men like this and understand what makes them tick。 This book captures the heartbeat of Colin Powell。

Chris Murphy

Solid book full of solid advice from a person who has demonstrated himself to be a solid leader。 Highly recommend。

Principios que funcionanEl libro narrado en primera persona es muy bueno, todo lo que Powell vivió lo narra tan naturalmente que impresiona。 lo mejor del libro, las 13 reglas que sugiere para liderar

Trish Mcintosh

Disappointed。 This felt like so many leadership/self help books by charismatic successful people。 A third or later book pushed out with little new - pasted together to fulfill a book contract。 It wasn’t awful- it just wasn’t good。

Yonatan Zeleke

Enjoyed this book thoroughly I had to read it twice。 Gen Powell various “rules” for leadership and even being a decent human being in this book。 Most of the rules in the book are common sense ideas but he presents them in such a simple way that makes it very easy to read。 I have used his recommendation in my leadership roles and will continue to use them more in the future。

Tyler Beil

I love how he takes what he has learned from the military to how he imply it throughout his life。 It has inspired me to be a better father and worker。 From this book he is a very remarkable upstanding man。 I only wish is that he had say something about what he would like the future of the government to do。

William Hands

Fantastic book。 Simple, relevant and applicable lessons everyone should be mindful of, well told。 I plan to reread this book many times。
