Summary

This is a highly original collection of 12 stories that I suppose is classed as contemporary horror, though the scare element is not a strong part of any。 Having said that, they are on the whole, clever, often gory, and frequently veer healthily towards the supernatural。 Though Enriquez does not tell the traditional ghost story, her writing is concerned in the way past darkness contaminates the present, especially Argentina’s recent past。 Children as objects of horror is a theme Enriquez uses in This is a highly original collection of 12 stories that I suppose is classed as contemporary horror, though the scare element is not a strong part of any。 Having said that, they are on the whole, clever, often gory, and frequently veer healthily towards the supernatural。 Though Enriquez does not tell the traditional ghost story, her writing is concerned in the way past darkness contaminates the present, especially Argentina’s recent past。 Children as objects of horror is a theme Enriquez uses in almost all of these stories。 Kids Who Come Back , which is by some way the longest of the stories, features a Buenos Aires city employee, who’s job it is to update the archive of missing and disappeared children。 Many start reappearing, but regardless of how long they have been missing, often several years, none seem to have aged。 There’s plenty of variety here as well, which the short story format can manage so well, from Meat, a tale of teenage cannibalism, to sexual perversion and mental illness in The Lookout。 My stand-outs, No Birthdays or Baptisms , in which the parents of a young woman who is self-harming in extreme ways in her sleep, hire a cameraman to film her。 The cameraman spends two nights with her and never sees her mysterious, apparently phantasmal assailant, but films Marcela’s naked, “slender and destroyed” body as she sleeps。 And Our Lady of the Quarry in which two teenage girls are infatuated by a rock musician who has committed suicide by skinning himself alive。 。。。more

horrifying and uncomfortable - some stories were better than others

Really enjoyed 9 out of the 12 stories in here! The other 3 weren’t bad, they just weren’t the sort of thing I’d normally read and I found aspects of them a bit upsetting tbh

Mariana Enriquez's 'Where are You, Dear Heart?' is the most twisted short story I've read since Chuck Palahniuk's 'Guts'。 This short story collection is mixed in quality which is a shame because I really thought I would love the book based on its description。 Her stories looking at Argentina's history and the populations' relationship with the rest of the world are easily the strongest of the collection。 'Kids Who Come Back' would have also worked as a separate short novella。 However there are t Mariana Enriquez's 'Where are You, Dear Heart?' is the most twisted short story I've read since Chuck Palahniuk's 'Guts'。 This short story collection is mixed in quality which is a shame because I really thought I would love the book based on its description。 Her stories looking at Argentina's history and the populations' relationship with the rest of the world are easily the strongest of the collection。 'Kids Who Come Back' would have also worked as a separate short novella。 However there are times when Enriquez feels like she is putting so much effort into writing passages just to revolt the reader that it ultimately makes select stories come across as too try hard。 I still would be interested in reading her first collection at some point in the future。 。。。more

To be read slowly… Something about the way these stories are told sits with you a long time after you finish them

a bit creepy but i definitely fucked with it。 like it was good。the first couple of stories bored me (maybe it was the translation, or that im not into paranormal stuff) but the next few were greatmy favourites were the ones that resonated with the real world very deeply, seeming just about possible。 it was great i felt like throwing up at some points which was stellar。 they were so vivid and evocative and GOOD at conveying the setting and unease and horror。 obsessed。my favourite short stories we a bit creepy but i definitely fucked with it。 like it was good。the first couple of stories bored me (maybe it was the translation, or that im not into paranormal stuff) but the next few were greatmy favourites were the ones that resonated with the real world very deeply, seeming just about possible。 it was great i felt like throwing up at some points which was stellar。 they were so vivid and evocative and GOOD at conveying the setting and unease and horror。 obsessed。my favourite short stories were Rambla Triste, Meat and Kids Who Come Back :) 。。。more

A collection of horror stories that are dark and provocative but also fun and fresh。 These stories seem to be inspired by real societal horrors that people experience, like depression, jealousy, and fanaticism, but with a little twist of the paranormal。 Each one is more intense than the last and although this is a collection of stories, they flow in a way that a regular novel does; they ramp you up and get more exciting and horrifying as you go。 I think my favorites are:Rambla TristeWhere Are Yo A collection of horror stories that are dark and provocative but also fun and fresh。 These stories seem to be inspired by real societal horrors that people experience, like depression, jealousy, and fanaticism, but with a little twist of the paranormal。 Each one is more intense than the last and although this is a collection of stories, they flow in a way that a regular novel does; they ramp you up and get more exciting and horrifying as you go。 I think my favorites are:Rambla TristeWhere Are You, Dear Heart?Meat 。。。more

The line between realism and supernatural were so blurred here, I felt like I was reading a book consisting of multiple fever dreams。 12 short stories and some of them did not impress me at all。 But the ones that impressed me saved the book for me。 Favs were : The WellKids Who Came Back Back When We Talked To The DeadMeat

Read in a day to comfort distress。 Reading distress to counteract it made me feel better。

Giana Leiva

Very well written, weird stories。 Perfect for both spooky season and Hispanic Heritage Month

These short stories were interesting and unsettling but weren't really that scary。 There was some gore so be sure to check the trigger warnings。 I enjoyed it but it's a bit forgettable compared to other short horror stories I have read。 Angelita Unearthed- 3creepy baby with decaying flesh haunting her relative by wailing for her bones。 yes, seems like a legit start Our Lady Of The Quarry - 1meh。 brats are jealous of a douche and their fellow brat friend。 not as creepy just really annoying These short stories were interesting and unsettling but weren't really that scary。 There was some gore so be sure to check the trigger warnings。 I enjoyed it but it's a bit forgettable compared to other short horror stories I have read。 Angelita Unearthed- 3creepy baby with decaying flesh haunting her relative by wailing for her bones。 yes, seems like a legit start Our Lady Of The Quarry - 1meh。 brats are jealous of a douche and their fellow brat friend。 not as creepy just really annoying The Cart - 2people making fun of a homeless man get exactly what they deserve The Well - 5 my goodness yes。 i really liked this one。 a bit predictable but our main character in this story is so well written and that ending, ugh Rambla Triste- 3paints an unsettling picture of barcelona The Lookout- 2two people in a hotel。。almost romantic。。。 but forgettable Where Are You, Dear Heart?- 4 "i masturbated to the sound of sick hearts" isn't the best line to blast from your car from this short story in your work parking lot。。。 but it was definitely unsettling。。。 Meat- 4creepy fangirls know no end to their obsession No Birthdays Or Baptisms- 5this one was great (in whatever way an unsettling story like this can be) and captivated me from start to finish Kids Who Come Back- 4 although this was the longest story, it was the most entertaining and i couldn't wait to find out what was going on The Dangers Of Smoking In Bed- 1 ironic indeed Back When We Talked To The Dead- 3who is letting all these brats play with an ouija board read as part of spooky season haunted tales that hopefully keep me up till the witching hour🕸 picture of dorian gray🕸 we have always lived in the castle🕸 rules for vanishing🕸 dracula🕸 the iliac crest🕸 the dangers of smoking in bed 。。。more

Weird objectification of bodies was a thing is here, alongside a smattering of slurs that made me feel a bit uncomfortable, especially when directed at marginalised communities and those looked down upon in the local society。 Was really looking forward to this one - pretty certain I'd love it - but I was really disappointed by it, unfortunately。 Might head to the author's other translated collection, since that was written after this one, to see if it's any different。 Weird objectification of bodies was a thing is here, alongside a smattering of slurs that made me feel a bit uncomfortable, especially when directed at marginalised communities and those looked down upon in the local society。 Was really looking forward to this one - pretty certain I'd love it - but I was really disappointed by it, unfortunately。 Might head to the author's other translated collection, since that was written after this one, to see if it's any different。 。。。more

didnt live up to my expectations, it was macabre without going too far but i wanted that extra spice, most stories were tame like it could have gone a bit further and still left room for the imagination (i liked 'where are you dear heart?', 'our lady of the quarry' and 'the dangers of smoking in bed') didnt live up to my expectations, it was macabre without going too far but i wanted that extra spice, most stories were tame like it could have gone a bit further and still left room for the imagination (i liked 'where are you dear heart?', 'our lady of the quarry' and 'the dangers of smoking in bed') 。。。more

These stories were formatted a bit like jokes—culminating until the chilling punch-line that read like "。。。 And they were never seen again" with a very pointed DUN-DUN-DUUUN。 But that's not really the biggest issue。 After all, the first batch of stories and the last, especially, were effectively crafted and had me oo-ing and making faces as I turned pages。 But the absolute slog of a story about missing children not only lacked sufficient chills but drug on so long that its inevitable "punch-line These stories were formatted a bit like jokes—culminating until the chilling punch-line that read like "。。。 And they were never seen again" with a very pointed DUN-DUN-DUUUN。 But that's not really the biggest issue。 After all, the first batch of stories and the last, especially, were effectively crafted and had me oo-ing and making faces as I turned pages。 But the absolute slog of a story about missing children not only lacked sufficient chills but drug on so long that its inevitable "punch-line" felt almost silly。 It's totally possible I'm missing some cultural context here and would appreciate them more if I knew the kinds of allegory happening—after all, it's horror。 But after about three stories with similar narrative structures, I began to become bored with the delivery and the spectacle lost its edge。 But man, that dead baby in the beginning was pretty scary。 。。。more

An eerie collection of fabulously uncomfortable tales。I enjoyed some of the stories a lot more than others, which is pretty normal for a short story collection。 I loved how Enríquez explored unique ideas, and her ability to create such a claustrophobic atmosphere is brilliant。However, by the end of the collection I felt that the tales were becoming slightly repetitive in tone; I would have loved one or two that really diverged from her usual style just to keep things interesting。A brilliant spoo An eerie collection of fabulously uncomfortable tales。I enjoyed some of the stories a lot more than others, which is pretty normal for a short story collection。 I loved how Enríquez explored unique ideas, and her ability to create such a claustrophobic atmosphere is brilliant。However, by the end of the collection I felt that the tales were becoming slightly repetitive in tone; I would have loved one or two that really diverged from her usual style just to keep things interesting。A brilliant spooky season read。 。。。more

It’s not as shocking as her other books。 These short stories have less suspense but still are amazing。 Although, now that I think about it, I’m not sure if they are less shocking or I actually got used to Mariana Enriquez’s stories 😛
