Summary

Critically acclaimed author Alan Moore redefined graphic novel story-telling with Watchmen and V for Vendetta。 In Batman: The Killing Joke, he takes on the origin of comics' greatest super-villain, The Joker, and changes Batman's world forever。

ONE BAD DAY。

According to the grinning engine of madness and mayhem known as the Joker, that's all that separates the sane from the psychotic。 Freed once again from the confines of Arkham Asylum, he's out to prove his deranged point。 And he's going to use Gotham City's top cop, Commissioner Jim Gordon, and his brilliant and beautiful daughter Barbara to do it。

Now Batman must race to stop his archnemesis before his reign of terror claims two of the Dark Knight's closest friends。 Can he finally put an end to the cycle of bloodlust and lunacy that links these two iconic foes before it leads to its fatal conclusion? And as the horrifying origin of the Clown Prince of Crime is finally revealed, will the thin line that separates Batman's nobility and the Joker's insanity snap once and for all?

Legendary writer Alan Moore redefined the superhero with Watchmen and V For Vendetta。 In Batman: The Killing Joke, he takes on the origin of comics' greatest super-villain, the Joker--and changes Batman's world forever。

(Zero spoiler review) 3。75/5When I first fell in love with the comic book medium, I really, really didn't care for superhero's。 It might seem a weird statement, given that most would think the two are intrinsically linked, and in many ways they are。 I just prefer more grounded stories。 I have relaxed this stance a little of late, having bought a number of well regarded superhero runs, although it remains to be seen just how much I will fall for them moving forward。 I borrowed the Killing Joke fr (Zero spoiler review) 3。75/5When I first fell in love with the comic book medium, I really, really didn't care for superhero's。 It might seem a weird statement, given that most would think the two are intrinsically linked, and in many ways they are。 I just prefer more grounded stories。 I have relaxed this stance a little of late, having bought a number of well regarded superhero runs, although it remains to be seen just how much I will fall for them moving forward。 I borrowed the Killing Joke from the library a few months ago。 It was very highly regarded, and it was written by Alan Moore, so of course I was going to give it a shot。 Now, Moore knows how to do dark and disturbing with the very best of them, and I must admit that, all things considered, I was a little underwhelmed by the end of it。 Despite 1980's DC not being the basket case of a company it is now, there was only ever going to be so much leeway Moore was given to tell a tale, and in al honestly, this may have been exactly the story he was wanting to tell。 Maybe it's on me for going in with sky high expectations, but this Joker origin story just didn't quite tickle my pickle as I would have liked。 I felt the pacing was a bit off, especially towards the end。 I found it a little abrupt and jarring。 It felt like it was building to something more momentous in the future, but instead, it was rather hastily wrapped up when there were issues more of potential。 Again, this may have been out of Moore's hands, but I can only judge what's here before me。 I wanted more of Joker and his girlfriend, I wanted more of Barbara Gordon and I wanted it contained within this arc for complete absorption all at once。 I'm certainly no scholar on the Batman reading order, and someone more knowledgeable than me may be shaking their head at my amateur interpretation of the reading order, but what can I say。 It was certainly good。 Is anything by Moore not? But as far as the much lauded Batman origin story。。。 this one left me feeling a little disappointed, despite being head and shoulders above what passes for a superhero story these days。 3。75/5OmniBen。 。。。more

Joker is one wild son of a bitch。

The original coloring is incredible。 Mixed feelings about the story - particularly how it uses Barbara。

After hearing all the hype about it, I was eager to see how could such a short story be so praised for its narrative and thematic concepts。 I get it now。 Great story。 Phrasing is impeccable on this one。 Surely worth a read。

“I’ve been thinking lately。。。 about you。。。 about me。 About what’s going to happen to us, in the end。 We’re going to kill each other, aren’t we? Perhaps you’ll kill me。。。 perhaps I’ll kill you。 Perhaps sooner。。。 perhaps later。”

Received the comic for my Birthday Good:Artwork is good and features many iconic shots, and breathtaking detail。 The story is air tight, and features the Joker's backstory in creative and interesting ways。 Cool transitions between the main story and Jokers backstory。 Very quick but re-readable story。 Bad: Too dark for no reason, continues the trend of Alan Moore writing women only to be in service for the story or men of the comic (cough cough Watchmen)。 The story is a one shot and wasn't built Received the comic for my Birthday Good:Artwork is good and features many iconic shots, and breathtaking detail。 The story is air tight, and features the Joker's backstory in creative and interesting ways。 Cool transitions between the main story and Jokers backstory。 Very quick but re-readable story。 Bad: Too dark for no reason, continues the trend of Alan Moore writing women only to be in service for the story or men of the comic (cough cough Watchmen)。 The story is a one shot and wasn't built up to be the groundbreaking story it is, and can overhype people only to be let down by the simplicity of the short story。 Batman very much feels like a side-character to the Joker, and we lose Batmans emotions on the story。 Personal Opinion: The story was overrated, too dark, and I believe it is so critically acclaimed because it is the only one too go so deep into the Jokers backstory。 And all the batman fans read this and think batman comics should be dark like this, and so many praise it only for the darkness。 Overall I have re-read it multiple times and want to get something out of the comic, but just don't understand the hype, and think it's for the people who enjoy grim tales and like the Joker。 Would have been better if it featured multiple origin stories and we don't know which one is the real one。 。。。more

I can't even rate this because I don't know how much I enjoyed it。 I've never watched any Joker movies nor read anything related to him, but what in the world?! What in the world is wrong with this guy。 What frightens me about the Joker is realistic he is, the mental issues he has and the poverish situations he’s been in can happen。 I like the ending though, especially in the movie! Moore's writing is uncharacteristically blunt and the treatment of Barbara grossly misogynistic, but Brian Bolland's excellent artwork carries this as a classic Joker comic。 Moore's writing is uncharacteristically blunt and the treatment of Barbara grossly misogynistic, but Brian Bolland's excellent artwork carries this as a classic Joker comic。 。。。more

I think this needed to be longer。 I want to see more of the Joker's desire to put this plan into action。 I want to see more of Gordon's descent into almost madness, but resolve。 Otherwise, this is one of the pivotal stories in the Batman history。 Although a major event in The Killing Joke has since been healed(?), this was a pretty groundbreaking story。 Honestly, I think stories like this should happen more in superhero universes。 I would consider the Batman writers trailblazers in this regard。 I think this needed to be longer。 I want to see more of the Joker's desire to put this plan into action。 I want to see more of Gordon's descent into almost madness, but resolve。 Otherwise, this is one of the pivotal stories in the Batman history。 Although a major event in The Killing Joke has since been healed(?), this was a pretty groundbreaking story。 Honestly, I think stories like this should happen more in superhero universes。 I would consider the Batman writers trailblazers in this regard。 We get to dig into the Joker's backstory and the relationship between Batman and the Joker。 I think from a psychological standpoint, Batman's stories do a consistently better job of diving into motivations and relationships, and The Killing Joke is no different。 This is still a great story, just felt a little short to me。 。。。more

The build up to the big-reveal art works is just extraordinary。 I read the physical comic and caught myself staring in awe at some of the frames。This is an origin story, a short and crisp one, that leaves it's mark。 The writing is equally brilliant, it's something you could read over and over again。 I have a new appreciation for the medium, and what it can achieve。 The build up to the big-reveal art works is just extraordinary。 I read the physical comic and caught myself staring in awe at some of the frames。This is an origin story, a short and crisp one, that leaves it's mark。 The writing is equally brilliant, it's something you could read over and over again。 I have a new appreciation for the medium, and what it can achieve。 。。。more

Smile!A great story! I found the ending a little weak, however; the overarching narrative and complex themes warrant a high rating。 Alan Moore hasn’t disappointed and the artwork is stellar。 It’s a great story focusing on the Joker and a quick read。Happy reading, everybody!

Please, whatever you do, do NOT watch the animated film based on this。 Great origin story for the Joker, and a tragic adventure。 Changed the course of the Bat Family。

“So when you find yourself locked onto an unpleasant train of thought, heading for the places in your past where the screaming is unbearable, remember, there’s always madness。 Madness is the emergency exit… You can just step outside and close the door on all those dreadful things that happened。 You can lock them away… forever。”The Killing Joke is a classic Batman story that follows the Joker as he escapes from Arkham Asylum, determined to prove that he is not that different from the caped crusad “So when you find yourself locked onto an unpleasant train of thought, heading for the places in your past where the screaming is unbearable, remember, there’s always madness。 Madness is the emergency exit… You can just step outside and close the door on all those dreadful things that happened。 You can lock them away… forever。”The Killing Joke is a classic Batman story that follows the Joker as he escapes from Arkham Asylum, determined to prove that he is not that different from the caped crusader that hunts him: that the line between madness and sanity is fragile, thin and easily broken by just one bad day。 The story is told in dual timelines, one following the Joker as he breaks out, kidnaps Jim Gordon and lures Batman to a deranged confrontation, and the other one follows Joker before he became a master criminal: his backstory and what happened to him are revealed。The Killing Joke is a very hyped story and whenever I googled which DC comics I should pick up and which ones are the best, the Killing Joke was nearly always mentioned, so I expected to like it。 Unfortunately, I was very disappointed and didn't really care for this story。 The art beautiful and intense and suited the dark, twisted nature of the book, but the story was just, a bit blah, though I enjoyed how the Joker's madness was shown, drawn and written - he is truly terrifying in what he does, especially to Jim Gordon。 Joker's backstory was very basic and boring - a failing career, (view spoiler)[ a pregnant wife who dies (hide spoiler)] etc。 - and I didn't feel like what happened to him was enough to explain why he became the man he is now。 I also think the ending of the story was very abrupt and unsatisfying。 Another thing I really disliked was how Barbara Gordon was used in this story。 It made me so uncomfortable how she was first harmed, and then taken advantage of and humiliated: the Joker literally (view spoiler)[ shot her, then stripped her naked and took photos of her, and later paraded them to her father to try and drive him mad (hide spoiler)]。 This book is, in many ways, very violent - there are fights, killings, mental violence - but the way Barbara was assaulted in so many ways, in such invasive, horrible ways, really didn't sit well with me。 I've read that Alan Moore himself has said later on that he regrets some of the things he wrote in the book, for example all the stuff with Barbara, and man do I agree: that should've been toned down。So, yeah, this was a sad disappointment in many ways。 It had some good stuff - mainly between the Joker and Batman when they discuss how they are not as different from each other as Batman would like to believe, how they have both left what "normal" people would call sanity behind them - but I honestly wouldn't recommend it。 。。。more

The Graphic Novel of Jokers kind I've origin it's an interesting read but it seems too confusing sometimes on what the story is going for and what it's really talking about。 I read this book 3 times and I'm still kinda confused about some parts of the book。 The Graphic Novel of Jokers kind I've origin it's an interesting read but it seems too confusing sometimes on what the story is going for and what it's really talking about。 I read this book 3 times and I'm still kinda confused about some parts of the book。 。。。more
