Summary

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics。

‘The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it。’

When Basil Hallward paints the portrait of young, handsome Dorian Gray, he falls prey to his dazzling beauty。 Afraid that his youth and looks will waste away, Dorian expresses a wish that his portrait, and not he, will age and fade over time。 His wish is granted, and over the ensuing years, Dorian indulges in every kind of vice and pleasure, never ageing nor disfiguring。 Only his portrait, hidden to the world, bears the marks of his actions, and as his soul grows ever more wasted and corrupted, devastating
consequences lie in wait。

The Picture of Dorian Gray is an exploration of the purpose of art, the superficial nature of youth and beauty, and the conflict between morality and intemperance。 First published in its complete, uncensored form in 1891, it is Oscar Wilde’s only novel。

Bellissimo。 Questo capolavoro mi è piaciuto molto anche se devo dire che alcuni passaggi della storia per me sono stati quasi banali。 La scrittura mi ha coinvolta。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I dont write reviews so I don't know if this is upto the standards of the reviews hehe。 This book has a moral lesson。 The excess of anything is bad。 The irony that the thing you love the most is the thing that destroys you。I really liked Basil's character and Lord Henry's dialogues。 I was soo heart-broken when Basil was killed 。 I put the book down after the scene。Dorian considered Lord Henry his good friend than Basil but I think Basil was the friend that Dorian should have cherished。 He wanted I dont write reviews so I don't know if this is upto the standards of the reviews hehe。 This book has a moral lesson。 The excess of anything is bad。 The irony that the thing you love the most is the thing that destroys you。I really liked Basil's character and Lord Henry's dialogues。 I was soo heart-broken when Basil was killed 。 I put the book down after the scene。Dorian considered Lord Henry his good friend than Basil but I think Basil was the friend that Dorian should have cherished。 He wanted to save Him while Lord Henry encouraged Dorian in everything ; good or bad。I was hoping that at the end of the book Dorian would confess to Lord Henry that he murdered Basil ( I know he talked to him but it wasn't a proper confession but also I think Lord Henry got the idea that he had murdered him。) Also, I was soo shocked when Dorian died。 But again he did suffered for a appropriate amount of time for his sins。 The ending was good。I don't got any homosexual vibes from any of the characters, Basil really liked Dorian。 He worshipped him like when you really like someone for who he is。 I don't know , I just didn't get the love vibes - I read it on google that the book was banned because of homosexuality and how Women were shown; that I agree with。 Women were shown lesser than men which in that era was the case ,so。 I Loved the Book 。 。。。more

I loved this book (that I read two summers ago)。 It is currently shelved in my favorite-books-of-all-time-mental-archive and it will never get out of there。 Read it! I command you! Plus it is a beautiful way to absorve the knowledge of literature

I was extremely excited for this book but it felt off to me。 I disliked the style of writing, even with the overabundance of details the book felt bland and dragged out。 I disliked that Dorian couldn't find his place in the middle of Lord Henry and Basil's views, I know this is the purpose of the book but I couldn't get over it。 I hated the book's perspective of morals as self-indulgent, since morals are developed with personal experiences, everyone's varry and might find one action the opposite I was extremely excited for this book but it felt off to me。 I disliked the style of writing, even with the overabundance of details the book felt bland and dragged out。 I disliked that Dorian couldn't find his place in the middle of Lord Henry and Basil's views, I know this is the purpose of the book but I couldn't get over it。 I hated the book's perspective of morals as self-indulgent, since morals are developed with personal experiences, everyone's varry and might find one action the opposite。 There are other small issues I had with this book like why society thought that moral-goodness had a weight on appearance? I don't think there was anything I enjoyed while reading this book。 。。。more

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! i love the words on the conversations and the aesthetic of the book。 I pictured Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray bcs he's face just matches the vibes。 Also this is the first classic i've ever read, little bit of struggle here and there。 ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! i love the words on the conversations and the aesthetic of the book。 I pictured Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray bcs he's face just matches the vibes。 Also this is the first classic i've ever read, little bit of struggle here and there。 。。。more

No matter how much I read it, the ending never ceases to amaze me - nor does the rest of the book。 It's a masterpiece, it deserves to be treasured, and I think everybody should read it once, if not more, before they die。 No matter how much I read it, the ending never ceases to amaze me - nor does the rest of the book。 It's a masterpiece, it deserves to be treasured, and I think everybody should read it once, if not more, before they die。 。。。more

This book makes you hold your breath。 Not once, not twice, but again and again and again。 It makes you ask , to rethink your realities。 It puts forward our most outrageous thoughts, our most blasphemous desires, that we hesitate to even bring to the forefront of our minds。 And presented as bluntly as they are ,in the form of this book, it leaves you only two choices。 To muse and marvel at them, or to hate them with a passion hitherto unknown。 For me, it was the former。 It was the character of lo This book makes you hold your breath。 Not once, not twice, but again and again and again。 It makes you ask , to rethink your realities。 It puts forward our most outrageous thoughts, our most blasphemous desires, that we hesitate to even bring to the forefront of our minds。 And presented as bluntly as they are ,in the form of this book, it leaves you only two choices。 To muse and marvel at them, or to hate them with a passion hitherto unknown。 For me, it was the former。 It was the character of lord henry which was the highlight of this masterpiece。 The shocking ability of his to put into words that which others refrain from even thinking, is astounding。 It feels as if Oscar Wilde let his pen rein free as much with lord Henry's character as he restricted it with the others'。 The moral spiraling of Dorian couldn't have been predicted in the beginning, where he was presented as the purest of youths, and was all the more shocking for it。 He is howmost of us would've wanted to live; lawless, unstoppable, without any thoughts of consequences。 The painter, for me, was our demure self, that we present to the world, the thick crust we wear on top of our dark insides, the uncontroversial being that goes with the flow。 In short, it is an impeccably written poisonous book, that can mar you for life , if you are not careful handling it。 So do read it, but with a light heart。 Don't think too deeply, or you might end up as Dorian did。 。。。more

It's hard to describe such a complex book that deep dives in depth at different themes and points of view。 Starting with the easier aspect, the book follows a boy named Dorian Gray who is seemingly beautiful in the eyes of society。 When his portrait is painted, he accidently wishes to never lose this beauty and youth, to never be physically scarred by time ─ and it comes true。 Influence seems to be one of the biggest themes that shapes the book。 How your surroundings can taint an innocent mind a It's hard to describe such a complex book that deep dives in depth at different themes and points of view。 Starting with the easier aspect, the book follows a boy named Dorian Gray who is seemingly beautiful in the eyes of society。 When his portrait is painted, he accidently wishes to never lose this beauty and youth, to never be physically scarred by time ─ and it comes true。 Influence seems to be one of the biggest themes that shapes the book。 How your surroundings can taint an innocent mind and drive them to do things they may have only thought of。 Different perspectives are argued within by different characters, which makes this story ever compelling。 It is also can be related to our society now days, and it's obsession of looking good on social media。 It is a shame it's Oscar Wilde's only novel。 Or perhaps that is the charm of it。 。。。more

Might not there be some curious scientific reason for it all? If thought could exercise its influence upon a living organism, might not thought exercise an influence upon dead or inorganic things? Nay, without thought or conscious desire, but not things external to ourselves vibrate in unison with our moods and passions, atom calling to atom in secret love or strange affinity? But the reason was of no importance。 He would never again attempt by a prayer any terrible power。It is a sad truth, but we have lost the faculty of giving lovely names to things。 Names are everything。 I never quarrel with actions。 My one quarrel is with words。 That is the reason I hate vulgar realism in literature。 The man who could call a spade a spade should be compelled to use one。 it is the only thing he is fit for。 。。。more
