Extremely sprawling and mildly cohesive history of the (Marvel) universe。Not having read Marvel comics consistently since the 80s, most of this was new to me; but the glimpses of stories, in some cases trying to distill a couple of years of comics into a compelling sentence, didn't inspire me to go see what the full story was。 And when they get to the modern era's multiple-title crossover events that last for a couple of years, which happen one after the other, it just gets repetitions。When DC d Extremely sprawling and mildly cohesive history of the (Marvel) universe。Not having read Marvel comics consistently since the 80s, most of this was new to me; but the glimpses of stories, in some cases trying to distill a couple of years of comics into a compelling sentence, didn't inspire me to go see what the full story was。 And when they get to the modern era's multiple-title crossover events that last for a couple of years, which happen one after the other, it just gets repetitions。When DC did this same thing back in the 80s, they kept the brush-strokes broad enough that it talked more about the eras and characters instead of individual storylines, which was more palatable IMO。Truthfully, I found the annotations in the back more interesting than the story (which is Galactus telling Franklin Richards of the history of the universe at the end of time before he passes on the mantle of Galactus。。? I would think there could be a more compelling story hook。。。), and potentially the reason I would want to keep this book。 。。。more

If you're a fan of Marvel comics this is an absolute must have。Huge props to Mark Waid for managing to take 80 years of comics and condense it into 6 issues and still make it so compelling! And each of Javier Rodriguez's pages is an absolute delight。I loved this。 If you're a fan of Marvel comics this is an absolute must have。Huge props to Mark Waid for managing to take 80 years of comics and condense it into 6 issues and still make it so compelling! And each of Javier Rodriguez's pages is an absolute delight。I loved this。 。。。more

Excellent series from Waid exploring the entire history of the Universe in great detail ,told as a conversation at the end of time between Galactus and Franklin Richards。 Especially impressive is the annotations section at the back of the volume, fleshing out even more detail。

This is immensely successful at what it sets out to be: a spectacularly illustrated, exhaustively comprehensive organization of decades of Marvel comics into a timeline summary。 I’m impressed more than moved by what is essentially a very pretty long-form wiki entry, but it’s still very pretty and very impressively collected in one place。 The summaries of decades of comics I’ve mostly heard of but rarely read had some interesting context and neat reveals I’d otherwise never know。 Like, Spider-Man This is immensely successful at what it sets out to be: a spectacularly illustrated, exhaustively comprehensive organization of decades of Marvel comics into a timeline summary。 I’m impressed more than moved by what is essentially a very pretty long-form wiki entry, but it’s still very pretty and very impressively collected in one place。 The summaries of decades of comics I’ve mostly heard of but rarely read had some interesting context and neat reveals I’d otherwise never know。 Like, Spider-Man’s birth parents were CIA agents killed in a plane crash orchestrated by Red Skull when he realized they were working undercover against him? Ok! The last 2-3 issues covered more modern comics I’d actually caught up with in recent years; it was neat to see how each of those were covered in a page or two and I got a nostalgic thrill from all the subtle visual references scattered around but not explicitly called out。 I imagine that’s how every page feels for readers who’ve read way more Marvel comics than I have。 I also appreciated the extra 10-15 pages at the end of every issue devoted to copious notes showing the original published comic source for each page, usually with a panel from the original comic for good measure。 。。。more

Nice comic to get up to speed with the marvel history, but a little bit boring。But to be honest, it's just panels of action with a narrator saying: "then this happened", "then hero x was born", "then this celestial came to earth", etc etc。。。Only for the Marvel fans who don't want to read a Wikipedia page。 Nice comic to get up to speed with the marvel history, but a little bit boring。But to be honest, it's just panels of action with a narrator saying: "then this happened", "then hero x was born", "then this celestial came to earth", etc etc。。。Only for the Marvel fans who don't want to read a Wikipedia page。 。。。more

Very Good and very info heavy, I especially enjoyed the loose narrative in which the history was delivered to the reader。 The art is great and the writing incredibly informative, great for figuring out which parts of the Marvel universe you want to read。

Basically the Marvel Handbook in story form, and it’s amazingly cohesive for such a sprawling, messy, often contradictory universe created by dozens of people over almost 75 years。 It’s a nearly impossible task, but Waid mostly pulls it off。 I say “mostly” only because he had to leave several things out, but they’re all included in the extensive appendix that’s nearly as long as the main story。

It's clear a lot of work went into this and Waid is one of the masters。 I see a lot of the other reviews here compared this to the Grand Design books。 But it doesn't work in any real sense as a story。 It feels like an echo of Marvel Comics #1000 where it's one darned thing after another。 In Marvel Comics #1000, Ewing forced it into a story by adding his own story of a Captain-Universe-type mask。 Here, the framing device is one I feel was not too surprising。 One of the more notable things here is It's clear a lot of work went into this and Waid is one of the masters。 I see a lot of the other reviews here compared this to the Grand Design books。 But it doesn't work in any real sense as a story。 It feels like an echo of Marvel Comics #1000 where it's one darned thing after another。 In Marvel Comics #1000, Ewing forced it into a story by adding his own story of a Captain-Universe-type mask。 Here, the framing device is one I feel was not too surprising。 One of the more notable things here is how the book really slows down at the end beginning roughly with Bendis's big events。 I wonder if Waid likes those or merely thought they were all necesary。 。。。more

This is a beautifully drawn visual dictionary。 However there is one warning to potential readers。 This is as I’ve said just now, a visual dictionary。 I would look elsewhere for an action packed superhero comic。 However, after getting over my surprise over the genre, I found that History of The Marvel Universe was an amazing accomplishment。
