Summary

Learn to make every moment a once-in-a-lifetime experience with this definitive guide to the Japanese art of ichigo ichie (pronounced itchy-GO itchy-A), from the bestselling authors of Ikigai。

Every moment in our life happens only once, and if we let it slip away, we lose it forever--an idea captured by the Japanese phrase ichigo ichie。 Often spoken in Japan when greeting someone or saying goodbye, to convey that the encounter is unique and special, it is a tenet of Zen Buddhism and is attributed to a sixteenth-century master of the Japanese tea ceremony, or "ceremony of attention," whose intricate rituals compel us to focus on the present moment。

From this age-old concept comes a new kind of mindfulness。 In The Book of Ichigo Ichie, you will learn to。。。

* appreciate the beauty of the fleeting, the way the Japanese celebrate the cherry blossoms for two weeks every April, knowing they'll have to wait a whole year to see them again;
* use all five senses to anchor yourself in the present, helping you to let go of fear, sadness, anger, and other negative emotions fueled by fixating on the past or the future;
* be alert to the magic of coincidences, which help us find meaning among the disconnected events of our lives;
* use ichigo ichie to help you discover your ikigai, or life's purpose--because it's only by learning to be present, to be tuned into what catches your attention and excites you in the moment, that you can identify what it is that most motivates you and brings you happiness。

Every one of us contains a key that can open the door to attention, harmony with others, and love of life。 And that key is ichigo ichie

A good reminderWhen I read about ichigo and ichie, it made me think of my friends and family who had had life threatening illnesses and how this had changed their outlook on life。 It’s as simple as this - learning to appreciate every moment。

The book Captures the essence of " carpe diem" in a japanese way。 Has strong arguments about why you should live in the "present " based on the basic emotions。 All the examples related to the tea ceremony made me want to try it。 The book Captures the essence of " carpe diem" in a japanese way。 Has strong arguments about why you should live in the "present " based on the basic emotions。 All the examples related to the tea ceremony made me want to try it。 。。。more

It is a very calm soothing read like truly Japanese culture。 This book is all about being in the Present and as we all know that it's very rare for us to be in the moment and living it。 This book does provide some methods for being in the present and how it is helpful for us。 It is a very calm soothing read like truly Japanese culture。 This book is all about being in the Present and as we all know that it's very rare for us to be in the moment and living it。 This book does provide some methods for being in the present and how it is helpful for us。 。。。more

I'm always on the look out for books that help me to think about/perceive life and experience in new and more thoughtful ways。 This book is a perfect addition to my collection。 Ichigo Ichie translated from Japanese is "In this moment, an opportunity"- meaning that "everything we experience is a unique treasure that will never be repeated in the same way again"。 We will never have the exact same date with a love, a hike in the woods, a day at the beach, or meeting with friends。 Each presents its I'm always on the look out for books that help me to think about/perceive life and experience in new and more thoughtful ways。 This book is a perfect addition to my collection。 Ichigo Ichie translated from Japanese is "In this moment, an opportunity"- meaning that "everything we experience is a unique treasure that will never be repeated in the same way again"。 We will never have the exact same date with a love, a hike in the woods, a day at the beach, or meeting with friends。 Each presents its own unique experience that we can appreciate and savor。 What a wonderful way to make the most of every moment。 I'm going to revisit this one, and probably create a sketchnote or two with my takeaways。 LOVE IT。 。。。more

Ichigo Ichie - that this exact moment where I’m typing thee words into Goodreads, and smiling, this exact moment will never come back。 That there’s beauty in impermanence, and therefore why not just be fully in this moment。 Carpe diem is the closest Latin, and by relation English, expression of Ichigo Ichie。 But what made Ichigo Ichie come alive for me was in the way that Garcia and Miralles have explained it。 Never preachy, but lots of ideas, ways to be “Ichigo Ichie。” So much of the book reson Ichigo Ichie - that this exact moment where I’m typing thee words into Goodreads, and smiling, this exact moment will never come back。 That there’s beauty in impermanence, and therefore why not just be fully in this moment。 Carpe diem is the closest Latin, and by relation English, expression of Ichigo Ichie。 But what made Ichigo Ichie come alive for me was in the way that Garcia and Miralles have explained it。 Never preachy, but lots of ideas, ways to be “Ichigo Ichie。” So much of the book resonated deeply, but if I had to share one thing that really came home to me, it was “you are not your thoughts。” A part of the mindfulness and meditation that drive Ichigo Ichie, is to allow every thought into the mind, without getting attached to it。 Without fighting it。 Thoughts may be good, bad, embarrassing, joyful, and the way to deal with this variety of thought is to remember that “you are not your thoughts” :-) Ichigo Ichie。 Easy read, packed with insight。 。。。more

Beautiful book about zen in life。 I wasn’t sure I will like this much but this book did go a bit deeper into the zen philosophy about keeping things simple, living in the presence and seizing the moments。 Destiny depends on a moment。 Carper diem! Also, thru the book appreciate the concept of “mono no aware” or the nostalgia and sadness caused by impermanence of and all things that exist。 Make a good book to read to quiet down your mind - read It slowly if you can。

I thought this was a good companion to ikigai and I read this as I read the authors previous book on ikigai。I like how it all ties together and also introduces multiple other concepts。Maybe I'm a bit late joining the bandwagon of western thought being hyped up about multiple Japanese thoughts, but its still a great journey and I feel some resonance。There are additional concepts that need further research and I'll be looking at more of these authors books to read。 I thought this was a good companion to ikigai and I read this as I read the authors previous book on ikigai。I like how it all ties together and also introduces multiple other concepts。Maybe I'm a bit late joining the bandwagon of western thought being hyped up about multiple Japanese thoughts, but its still a great journey and I feel some resonance。There are additional concepts that need further research and I'll be looking at more of these authors books to read。 。。。more

Truly excellent。 One of the most enlightening and inspiring books I have read。 The idea of translating emotions into time is powerful, refreshing and totally changes your vision of how to live in the present as well as how to (much) better deal with anger, sadness and fear to let those go and move towards the emotion of happiness。The whole concept of ichigo ichie and its significance opens up a new vision of the world and how to truly live life as a treasure and path of appreciation of beauty in Truly excellent。 One of the most enlightening and inspiring books I have read。 The idea of translating emotions into time is powerful, refreshing and totally changes your vision of how to live in the present as well as how to (much) better deal with anger, sadness and fear to let those go and move towards the emotion of happiness。The whole concept of ichigo ichie and its significance opens up a new vision of the world and how to truly live life as a treasure and path of appreciation of beauty in so many things。Don't miss it, it will change your life distinctly for the better。 。。。more
