I started reading The Complete Works of H。P。 Lovecraft in March 2021 and finished it in October 2021。I found most stories good, but not great。 I didn’t like the ones with over-description of unnecessary details coming from Lovecraft’s vivid imagination, but I really loved some of his stories in which a deep characterization and a comprehensive picture of the main characters’ gradual descent into madness were provided。 Overall, I would give 3 stars to this collection。I have rated individual short I started reading The Complete Works of H。P。 Lovecraft in March 2021 and finished it in October 2021。I found most stories good, but not great。 I didn’t like the ones with over-description of unnecessary details coming from Lovecraft’s vivid imagination, but I really loved some of his stories in which a deep characterization and a comprehensive picture of the main characters’ gradual descent into madness were provided。 Overall, I would give 3 stars to this collection。I have rated individual short stories separately, but below is the summary of my ratings for each story。The Tomb (1917) – 3 starsDagon (1917) – 2 starsPolaris (1918) – 3 starsBeyond the Wall of Sleep (1919) – 3 starsMemory (1919) – 3 starsOld Bugs (1919) – 1 starThe Transition of Juan Romero (1919) – 2 starsThe White Ship (1919) – 2 starsThe Doom That Came to Sarnath (1919) – 2 starsThe Statement of Randolph Carter (1920) – 3 starsThe Terrible Old Man (1920) – 2 starsThe Tree (1920) – 2 starsThe Cats of Ulthar (1920) – 2 starsThe Temple (1920) – 3 starsFacts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family (1920) – 3 starsThe Street (1920) – 1 starCelephaïs (1920) – 2 starsFrom Beyond (1920) – 3 starsNyarlathotep (1920) – 3 starsThe Picture in the House (1920) – 2 starsEx Oblivione (1921) – 3 starsThe Nameless City (1921) – 2 starsThe Quest of Iranon (1921) – 2 starsThe Moon-Bog (1921) – 2 starsThe Outsider (1921) – 3 starsThe Other Gods (1921) – 2 starsThe Music of Erich Zann (1921) – 2 starsHerbert West — Reanimator (1922) – 2 starsHypnos (1922) – 3 starsWhat the Moon Brings (1922) – 1 starAzathoth (1922) – 1 starThe Hound (1922) – 3 starsThe Lurking Fear (1922) – 2 starsThe Rats in the Walls (1923) – 2 starsThe Unnamable (1923) – 1 starThe Festival (1923) – 1 starThe Shunned House (1924) – 2 starsThe Horror at Red Hook (1925) – 2 starsHe (1925) – 1 starIn the Vault (1925) – 2 starsThe Descendant (1926) – 1 starCool Air (1926) – 2 starsThe Call of Cthulhu (1926) – 3 starsPickman’s Model (1926) – 2 starsThe Silver Key (1926) – 2 starsThe Strange High House in the Mist (1926) – 1 starThe Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (1927) – 1 starThe Case of Charles Dexter Ward (1927) – 2 starsThe Colour Out of Space (1927) – 3 starsThe Very Old Folk (1927) – 1 starThe Thing in the Moonlight (1927) – 1 starThe History of the Necronomicon (1927) – 3 starsIbid (1928) – 1 starThe Dunwich Horror (1928) – 3 starsThe Whisperer in Darkness (1930) – 2 starsAt the Mountains of Madness (1931) – 2 starsThe Shadow Over Innsmouth (1931) – 2 starsThe Dreams in the Witch House (1932) – 2 starsThe Thing on the Doorstep (1933) – 4 starsThe Evil Clergyman (1933) – 1 starThe Book (1933) – 3 starsThe Shadow out of Time (1934) – 2 starsThe Haunter of the Dark (1935) – 3 stars 。。。more

You either appreciate Lovecraft's old-time spooky stories or you find them a bit antiquated, like I do。 Still, worth a perusal to see the development of horror fiction。 You either appreciate Lovecraft's old-time spooky stories or you find them a bit antiquated, like I do。 Still, worth a perusal to see the development of horror fiction。 。。。more

I read over 70% of this book and just couldn’t muster the energy to finish it。 I’m not a huge fan of his writing。 Some of his stories were great! Incredibly creepy and do give you the heebie jeebies。 Otherwise, it felt a bit repetitive。 3 stars for all the stories I did read。

The master of cosmic horror。 Lovecraft's writing style is so grim and realistic that many people believe he told stories that were based in fact - insisting that the mythical Necronomicon and the Cthulhu Mythos are real。 With assistance from Robert E Howard and Clark Ashton Smith, Lovecraft encouraged this belief among his readers。No one sets a grimmer tone, tells a story with a greater sense of dread, or paints a darker overall outlook of the nature of Man than Lovecraft。 These stories revoluti The master of cosmic horror。 Lovecraft's writing style is so grim and realistic that many people believe he told stories that were based in fact - insisting that the mythical Necronomicon and the Cthulhu Mythos are real。 With assistance from Robert E Howard and Clark Ashton Smith, Lovecraft encouraged this belief among his readers。No one sets a grimmer tone, tells a story with a greater sense of dread, or paints a darker overall outlook of the nature of Man than Lovecraft。 These stories revolutionized horror fiction in a way not seen since Poe's stories decades earlier, inspiring authors for generations to come including Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub, Richard Laymon, Bentley Little, and many more。 If you have not experienced a Lovecraftian story and are about to read him for the first time, buckle in, keep a light lit, lock the doors, and prepare for the ride of your life! 。。。more

I'm a diehard fan, so don't take this as anything like unbiased。 As far as I'm concerned, even Lovecrafts' bad work - and there's no dearth of that - is worth reading。 The way he uses words and the images he builds will always be entirely glorious, excessive, wonderful, astounding, and utterly without peer in the world of the weird fantasy genre。 I'm a diehard fan, so don't take this as anything like unbiased。 As far as I'm concerned, even Lovecrafts' bad work - and there's no dearth of that - is worth reading。 The way he uses words and the images he builds will always be entirely glorious, excessive, wonderful, astounding, and utterly without peer in the world of the weird fantasy genre。 。。。more

It's very good, both as a collection and the works themselves。 Technically it's not all of his work, but it does say "excluding collaborations" somewhere, so I can't blame it fully for that。There are many stories that aren't superb, however there are enough that are superb, so I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 as I am rating the whole collection。 This sort of horror is rare。 The newer stuff claiming to be of a similar nature often doesn't stay true to form。 That is to say it strays from satisfying It's very good, both as a collection and the works themselves。 Technically it's not all of his work, but it does say "excluding collaborations" somewhere, so I can't blame it fully for that。There are many stories that aren't superb, however there are enough that are superb, so I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 as I am rating the whole collection。 This sort of horror is rare。 The newer stuff claiming to be of a similar nature often doesn't stay true to form。 That is to say it strays from satisfying the core element of horror in favor of the aesthetic surrounding it, thus in my rating I am biased in favor of scarcity and originality。 。。。more

Macabre and horrific。 Although most of the stories tend to be witness accounts which majority of people don't find interesting, I on the other hand found this subtle layer of abstraction an interesting tool for story-telling。 Favorites were: A color out of space, A shadow out of time, whisperers in the dark。 Lovecraft is a genius in grim science fiction。 Macabre and horrific。 Although most of the stories tend to be witness accounts which majority of people don't find interesting, I on the other hand found this subtle layer of abstraction an interesting tool for story-telling。 Favorites were: A color out of space, A shadow out of time, whisperers in the dark。 Lovecraft is a genius in grim science fiction。 。。。more

If that crazy theory, that aliens are communicating with us is true, then I'm pretty certain they must have been communicating with this man。Some things H。 P。 Lovecraft writes are so beyond human, that I just have to shake my head, close the book and I start to think about the fact, that this man has the most fantastical mind ever。 Things in these stories are absolutelly surreal and down right crazy, but I still find myself intrigued by them so much。I can't even properly describe what I love abo If that crazy theory, that aliens are communicating with us is true, then I'm pretty certain they must have been communicating with this man。Some things H。 P。 Lovecraft writes are so beyond human, that I just have to shake my head, close the book and I start to think about the fact, that this man has the most fantastical mind ever。 Things in these stories are absolutelly surreal and down right crazy, but I still find myself intrigued by them so much。I can't even properly describe what I love about Lovecraft's stories so much。 Maybe it's their uniqueness。 They are crossing genres, he has a very specific writing style, there are so many crazy fantasy / scifi / horror ideas, which you won't see anywhere else and it also feels like a dive into person's psychology。There is no wonder so many people tried to write something similar, adapt Lovecraft work, or get inspired by it, but almost all of them totally failed。 The only trully good exeption might be Bloodborne, my favorite video game ever。So if it's not clear, I love Lovecraft。 He won't scare you as much as Poe or King, but he is great at getting into your head and staying there for a loooong time, just asking so many questions。 。。。more

I will probably finish this eventually, so I'll keep it on my reading list。 I've been reading this on and off for a few years now and after the first major stories, it gets very repetitive - to the point where I can't even recall whether I'd read something before or if it was a new story。I did thoroughly enjoy At the Mountains of Madness and The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, and another one I've forgotten the name of with an astronaut。 Lovecraft is terribly racist, and though the racism is a pr I will probably finish this eventually, so I'll keep it on my reading list。 I've been reading this on and off for a few years now and after the first major stories, it gets very repetitive - to the point where I can't even recall whether I'd read something before or if it was a new story。I did thoroughly enjoy At the Mountains of Madness and The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, and another one I've forgotten the name of with an astronaut。 Lovecraft is terribly racist, and though the racism is a product of its time, it's still pretty hard to swallow。 The one that I nearly smashed my Kindle was The Medusa's Coil, which was relatively compelling until the ending。 You'll know what I mean if you read it (or just look it up and save yourself the annoyance)。I once read a satirical article about how Lovecraft was essentially scared of everything (POC, fish, the sea, architecture, penguins, colours, dreams。。。 the list went hilariously on)。 I couldn't see it any other way after that。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading this book, despite being a difficult read。 Some of the stories were very suspenseful and thrilling。 Sometimes it was hard to put down。 Other times, difficult to get back to (due to an uninteresting story or due to "life happening")。 I will never look at the Artic tundras or think of dreams the same again。 I hope to some day read Charles Dexter Ward and the Pickman stories again。 They were quite fascinating, suspenseful, thrilling and, at times, very disturbing。 I enjoyed reading this book, despite being a difficult read。 Some of the stories were very suspenseful and thrilling。 Sometimes it was hard to put down。 Other times, difficult to get back to (due to an uninteresting story or due to "life happening")。 I will never look at the Artic tundras or think of dreams the same again。 I hope to some day read Charles Dexter Ward and the Pickman stories again。 They were quite fascinating, suspenseful, thrilling and, at times, very disturbing。 。。。more

A master of the horror craft。 Two stars lost for his quite apparent racism and white supremacy comments。

I will never fully understand why HP Lovecraft lore is the basis of a great amount of other monster lore。 His stories are interesting but not great。 The primary value of these works is the context they provide for other literature, games, and movies。It's also important to note that his works are filled with serious, extreme prejudice towards anyone not white, male, and straight。 I will never fully understand why HP Lovecraft lore is the basis of a great amount of other monster lore。 His stories are interesting but not great。 The primary value of these works is the context they provide for other literature, games, and movies。It's also important to note that his works are filled with serious, extreme prejudice towards anyone not white, male, and straight。 。。。more

These stories talk of one of two things。 The first being; killing oneself because unspeakable horrors have been witnessed, yet we are left to wonder what exactly said horrors are。 The second of which unspeakable horrors are also mentioned, usually in form of a cave, watery depth, or eyewitness — only a bit more explained, but then again not really。 Both of these plot points draw minimal suspense at best, yet I quite like them, I really do。 But only if it’s not all the writer writes about。 And sa These stories talk of one of two things。 The first being; killing oneself because unspeakable horrors have been witnessed, yet we are left to wonder what exactly said horrors are。 The second of which unspeakable horrors are also mentioned, usually in form of a cave, watery depth, or eyewitness — only a bit more explained, but then again not really。 Both of these plot points draw minimal suspense at best, yet I quite like them, I really do。 But only if it’s not all the writer writes about。 And sadly when it comes to Lovecraft that just simply isn’t the case。 I’ve liked some stories by him in the past, (The colour out of space especially) but reading this collection I’ve come to realize how incredibly mediocre and overrated Lovecraft truly is。 I can’t help but notice how he thinks he has such brilliant ideas as a writer。 The repetition of similar plot points proves this, and I do find it rather annoying and wanted to mention it as it may have rendered me biased。 I also can’t look past his racism/racist themes。 If you do like this writer, please don’t be offended and do keep enjoying him。 This type of writing style just simply isn’t it for me。 1/5 ⭐️ 。。。more
