Summary

Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country。

Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world。 As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule。 He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality。

The foster son of a Thembu chief, Mandela was raised in the traditional, tribal culture of his ancestors, but at an early age learned the modern, inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid, one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived。 In classically elegant and engrossing prose, he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in a Jewish firm in Johannesburg, of his slow political awakening, and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s。

He describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family, the anguished breakup of his first marriage, and the painful separations from his children。 He brings vividly to life the escalating political warfare in the fifties between the ANC and the government, culminating in his dramatic escapades as an underground leader and the notorious Rivonia Trial of 1964, at which he was sentenced to life imprisonment。 Herecounts the surprisingly eventful twenty-seven years in prison and the complex, delicate negotiations that led both to his freedom and to the beginning of the end of apartheid。 Finally he provides the ultimate inside account。

For me all biographies are great sources for motivation and this book was no exception。 The book outlines not only the life of a great person, but also describes life of South Africa on its way to becoming what it is today。Highly recommended。

El reto de leer este libro es una de las más grandes aventuras de lectura que he tenido, donde me obligaba a parar e investigar。 Es todo una inspiración y mirar cómo nuestras convicciones son lo más importante en nuestra vida。 Personajes únicos y especiales。

Nelson Mandela’s capacity for forgiveness and generosity, his bravery, his resilience, his commitment to his people and to doing what is right is inspirational and awe-inspiring。 I am desperately seeking a leader who has these attributes today, who can lead while uniting and fighting for what is right。 With that said, I did struggle to get through this book。 It was very long with many details that were easily muddled in my non-political mind。 It was as if Mandela was sharing his memories from a Nelson Mandela’s capacity for forgiveness and generosity, his bravery, his resilience, his commitment to his people and to doing what is right is inspirational and awe-inspiring。 I am desperately seeking a leader who has these attributes today, who can lead while uniting and fighting for what is right。 With that said, I did struggle to get through this book。 It was very long with many details that were easily muddled in my non-political mind。 It was as if Mandela was sharing his memories from a rocking chair while his grandchildren eagerly listened- full of information, but probably could’ve been edited。 But who am I to judge?People who are interested in politics will probably enjoy this book more than people like me。 No matter what, though, it’s worth reading to create a full picture of this legendary and incredible human who united a country and continues to inspire the world。 The general themes are relevant; anyone who reads it will take away some bit of inspiration to be better。 。。。more

This was a great read。 I knew embarrassingly little about Mandela and recent South African history。 This book and Mandela’s honest telling were very helpful。 His childhood accounts too provided insights into a lifestyle very different from my own experiences。 A recommended read!

An important read for anyone, anywhere around the world, to better understand what is the history behind apartheid and its atrocities in South Africa, through the story of a great and brave man。

Objectively, this memoir is 4 stars。 Mandela's story is an incredibly inspiring one, and the content itself is fascinating and empowering。 The writing style was a little too rigid and stilted for my particular taste at times so I would personally put it at 3 stars, however, I still liked the book and would 100% recommend it。 Objectively, this memoir is 4 stars。 Mandela's story is an incredibly inspiring one, and the content itself is fascinating and empowering。 The writing style was a little too rigid and stilted for my particular taste at times so I would personally put it at 3 stars, however, I still liked the book and would 100% recommend it。 。。。more

It's hard to fathom Mandela's depth of spirit against such odds and trials, but he seems to exemplify what all politicians should strive for, even in the face of unjust persecution。 It's hard to fathom Mandela's depth of spirit against such odds and trials, but he seems to exemplify what all politicians should strive for, even in the face of unjust persecution。 。。。more

I heard it on Audible。The story of a great man narrated with lots of details。 Definitely an inspiring book from an icon of our society。I think the story is well-know by everybody and the book does it part to keep it that way。

3 star read for me - extra star for representation and importance of their struggle。 Nelson and his ghostwriter do a really great job of illustrating a long life lived in civil service and the fight to make South Africa a democratic state with rights for all blacks, colored, Indians, etc。 I do think that the book was extremely long and has a lot of details on political maneuvering, which for me was fascinating but occasionally tedious。 I also think that folx will find it sad that this book doesn 3 star read for me - extra star for representation and importance of their struggle。 Nelson and his ghostwriter do a really great job of illustrating a long life lived in civil service and the fight to make South Africa a democratic state with rights for all blacks, colored, Indians, etc。 I do think that the book was extremely long and has a lot of details on political maneuvering, which for me was fascinating but occasionally tedious。 I also think that folx will find it sad that this book doesn't actually cover his 5 year term in office, just right up to the election results (a reflection of when the oral interviews for this book were recorded, which was in the interim days right afterwards)。 Ultimately, Nelson mentions a quote from a woman who after listening to his speech after he was freed from prison - something like, yes I'm glad you're out and all, but your speech was rather boring, donchya think? And that's sadly how I felt about this book at times。This work fulfills Book Riot's Read Harder challenge prompt - "Read a book by/about a non-Western world leader"。 。。。more

Without a doubt Nelson Mandela is an iconic and significant moral leader。 His accomplishments won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and his story is inspiring and uplifting in his fight against Apartheid。 However, I guess it's just me and no one else wants to NOT rate this 5 stars?? Nelson Mandela’s story is so unique it almost feels unreal。 For me, this was a riveting history lesson both of Mandela’s life itself and apartheid in South Africa overall。 I sped through this book in less than a week, the writing is light and the fact that these stories are all true and lived through by one person is just astonishing。 It really got my reading juices flowing。 Mandela was a remarkable man; his resilience, tenacity, balance, kindness and ability to forgive are unparalleled, and it Nelson Mandela’s story is so unique it almost feels unreal。 For me, this was a riveting history lesson both of Mandela’s life itself and apartheid in South Africa overall。 I sped through this book in less than a week, the writing is light and the fact that these stories are all true and lived through by one person is just astonishing。 It really got my reading juices flowing。 Mandela was a remarkable man; his resilience, tenacity, balance, kindness and ability to forgive are unparalleled, and it is a blessing that we have this memoir based on a manuscript he wrote in prison itself (and yes, sure, partially ghostwritten too, but hey, this guy had a country to free from racism, give him a break!)。Why only 4 stars then? He says it in his book: he doesn’t like talking about his personal feelings。 And that’s what I’m really into。 Of course he does discuss his family life and his thoughts, but in large parts the memoir is descriptive of places and actions, not thoughts and feelings。 After reading 700+ pages I still feel like I don’t get the guy, and I would love to。 I don’t really understand what animated him through all this hardship, how he navigated feelings about his family life and his commitment to the struggle。 And how did he manage to stay so calm and just push ahead without harbouring deep resentments? His speeches (some of which are reproduced in parts in the book) are beautiful and emotional, quite unlike the rest of the text。 He lays out his thinking in them more clearly than in the rest of the memoir, and they often give a better idea of how charismatic he was。 Maybe it’s just because he’s so different from me that I can’t comprehend him。 Maybe things don’t have to always be as complicated as they are in my own head。 Maybe some people find their calling/cause and then never question it。 I don’t know, but I would love to know。 Overall this is a mind-blowing book, and everyone should read it。 There is no better way to learn about the history of apartheid。 He is as unique and intriguing a human as you could imagine with an extraordinary life story imbued with meaning。 。。。more

I am so glad that I finally read this。 I knew that my knowledge was limited regarding apartheid, the struggle to bring equality to South Africa, and about Mandela's life。 I knew even less than I had thought。 I was fascinated as his story unfolded from childhood, allowing us to see how his circumstances and his choices led to him becoming a legend。 His courage, resilience, selflessness, intelligence, thoughtfulness, sense of injustice, and skill at collaborating combined to be a force that led to I am so glad that I finally read this。 I knew that my knowledge was limited regarding apartheid, the struggle to bring equality to South Africa, and about Mandela's life。 I knew even less than I had thought。 I was fascinated as his story unfolded from childhood, allowing us to see how his circumstances and his choices led to him becoming a legend。 His courage, resilience, selflessness, intelligence, thoughtfulness, sense of injustice, and skill at collaborating combined to be a force that led to astounding changes made in South Africa for all its citizens。There were so many quotes to ponder in this book。 This one, towards the end, is in my mind and seems relevant to what is happening now。 Mandela on accepting the Nobel Peace Prize - "I was often asked how I could accept the award jointly with de Klerc after I had criticized him so severely。 Although I would not take back my criticisms, I could say that he had made a genuine and indispensable contribution to the peace process。 I never sought to undermine Mr。 de Klerk for the practical reason that the weaker he was, the weaker the negotiations process。 To make peace with an enemy, one must work with that enemy, and that enemy becomes one's partner。 " 。。。more

The people have spoken and they want a review! Long Walk to Freedom accomplishes both telling Mandela’s life story and the history of South Africa in the 20th century。 It’s over 700 pages, but never feels slow or overly complicated。 It’s interesting to consider the audience and purpose of this autobiography since it was published right around Mandela’s presidency。 Mandela is admirable in so many ways - his strength of morals, self-discipline, compassion, fearless advocacy - but the book at least The people have spoken and they want a review! 2。5 stars。To echo what others have reviewed。。。gosh this was a long long longggg walk/read to freedom。 It felt more like 6000 pages than 600, and took me months to read - even though I ended up skimming over a number of pages because I just could not take any more of the excruciating detail he goes into with the hundreds of people's names, tribal names, job titles, acronyms for organisations that it seems like we are expected to remember and understand。 Mandela may have been an incredibly gifted 2。5 stars。To echo what others have reviewed。。。gosh this was a long long longggg walk/read to freedom。 It felt more like 6000 pages than 600, and took me months to read - even though I ended up skimming over a number of pages because I just could not take any more of the excruciating detail he goes into with the hundreds of people's names, tribal names, job titles, acronyms for organisations that it seems like we are expected to remember and understand。 Mandela may have been an incredibly gifted speaker and leader, but I cannot say the same for him as an author。 This book needed HEAVY editing, it could easily have been half the length and as a result would have been way more readable, understandable and engaging。That said, learning about his political life and imprisonment was very humbling and enlightening。 I just kind of wish I had done it via Wikipedia rather than this book, if I'm totally honest。 。。。more

One of the best autobiographies I've read。 I probably underlined more sentences in this book than any other book, period。 Should be required reading for anyone participating in any kind of social movement—or perhaps just anyone living in a democracy—or just everyone。 One of the best autobiographies I've read。 I probably underlined more sentences in this book than any other book, period。 Should be required reading for anyone participating in any kind of social movement—or perhaps just anyone living in a democracy—or just everyone。 。。。more

Wow! I had no idea about so much of what happened in South Africa。 It was so interesting hearing of Mandela’s evolution for his fight for freedom, rejecting even some of his own tribal customs for his pursuit of freedom。 27 years in prison。 I can’t even imagine! The book could have been a little briefer—at times, it went on。 But his story is so inspirational and unbelievable。
