Summary

The most current and insightful look at the politics and culture of the Bond world as the last Daniel Craig movie hits theaters。 This book presents an insightful and thoroughly entertaining exploration of the political context of the Bond books and films。 Jeremy Black offers a historian's interpretation from the perspective of 2020 and the latest Bond film, assessing James Bond in terms of the greatly changing world order of the Bond years-a lifetime that stretches from 1953, when the first novel appeared, to the present。 Black argues that the Bond novels-the Fleming books as well as the often-neglected novels authored by others after Fleming died in 1964-and films drew on current fears in order to reduce the implausibility of the villains and their villainy。 The novels and films also presented potent images of national character, explored the rapidly changing relationship between a declining Britain and an ascendant United States, charted the course of the Cold War and the subsequent post-1990 world, and offered an evolving but always potent demonology。 Bond was, and still is, an important aspect of post-World War II popular culture throughout the Western world。 This was particularly so after Hollywood launched the filmic Bond, thus making him not only a character designed for the American film market but also a world product and a figure of globalization。 Class, place, gender, violence, sex, race-all are themes that Black scrutinizes through the ongoing shifts in characterization and plot。 His well-informed and well-argued analysis provides a fascinating history of the enduring and evolving appeal of James Bond。 This updated edition explores new developments in the Daniel Craig years, looks to the post-Craig years, and considers the cultural significance of Bond in the modern world。

I read this book in preparation for a conversation with Jeremy Black on Bond。 I must say the only thing better than reading Black on Bond is listening to him speak on Bond! Black has a seemingly boundless passion and endless knowledge on the subject and this book does a fantastic job of laying it out。 If you are interested in the character, Cold War history, and/or post war culture and politics this highly digestible book will not disappoint。

An alluring and detailed crafting of Bond's history and cultural impact。 But no one cares about your academic controversies or opinions on American English words。 An alluring and detailed crafting of Bond's history and cultural impact。 But no one cares about your academic controversies or opinions on American English words。 。。。more

2。5 starsThere is nothing like kicking back and watching a new 007 film, especially with the signature gun barrel 'walk-turn-shoot' moment and then the famous theme music immediately setting the mood。I wish this book had some of that magic。 Even at less than 200 pages it was sort of tedious, though it was not really overly detailed about either the original book or subsequent movie series。 It reads like a college textbook on Bond, and it wasn't surprising that the British author is a historian a 2。5 starsThere is nothing like kicking back and watching a new 007 film, especially with the signature gun barrel 'walk-turn-shoot' moment and then the famous theme music immediately setting the mood。I wish this book had some of that magic。 Even at less than 200 pages it was sort of tedious, though it was not really overly detailed about either the original book or subsequent movie series。 It reads like a college textbook on Bond, and it wasn't surprising that the British author is a historian and professor。 Occasionally, however, he made some valid points - especially in the final chapter, where he briefly discusses the difficult choice of the next villain (he notes that certain races / nationalities / etc。 will be offended, and box office success has to be taken into account) or if the main character and movies will experience even more overhauling in the wake of actor Daniel Craig's departure。 。。。more

A thorough overview of the context of Ian Fleming’s Bond novels and films

I’m a big fan of the James Bond movies- much to the rest of my family’s regret, I’m sure - and I’ve read one or two of the Fleming novels。 This book considers an aspect of Bond beyond his activities- what happened in a certain part of British society that inspired Fleming to create a character who’s become so symbolic of Britain, and what was going on in Britain and in the US that influenced the making of both the novels and the movies。In the course of the book, we learn how the worldview of Fle I’m a big fan of the James Bond movies- much to the rest of my family’s regret, I’m sure - and I’ve read one or two of the Fleming novels。 This book considers an aspect of Bond beyond his activities- what happened in a certain part of British society that inspired Fleming to create a character who’s become so symbolic of Britain, and what was going on in Britain and in the US that influenced the making of both the novels and the movies。In the course of the book, we learn how the worldview of Fleming and others of his social status contributed to creating Bond, and how his adventures and attitudes reflected the changing fortunes of the U。K。 after World War II, and see how other authors handled Bond in the novels as times and attitudes changed。 Of course, the movies’ portrayal of Bond, as well as each actor’s personal take on 007, had a great influence on how we think of Bond。 We learn about how Bond in the movies both reflects and contradicts the Bond from the novels, how the producers’ fortunes affected the series, and how Americans’ growing influence on the world scene and love for the films affected how Bond was portrayed。 It’s a shame the book didn’t come out a bit more recently- it’d be interesting to hear about our reflections on Bond in light of the #MeToo movement, and how much we let Bond’s cavalier treatment of women slide。The book is short and thus a quick read, although it’s a bit dry at points。 The author is an expert on Bond and culture and has lectured at symposiums on Bond ( they have symposiums on Bond?!?), so he knows his stuff。 I wish he’d resisted the urge to gripe about some fellow critics that disparaged him at one conference, because it undercuts his credibility, but otherwise it was in interesting - if not necessarily gripping - book。 。。。more

This was a good, and very detailed book, but it was dry at times。 We do get lots of info, like Bond slept with 58 women so far in the books/films and that Ian Fleming didn't have a whole lot of money when he died。 Bond fans will enjoy it。 This was a good, and very detailed book, but it was dry at times。 We do get lots of info, like Bond slept with 58 women so far in the books/films and that Ian Fleming didn't have a whole lot of money when he died。 Bond fans will enjoy it。 。。。more

Could have been better, but got more interesting as it went along。

A bit rambling about Bond and his times and how the political situation changed from the books to the movies。 Not too coherent, and I would have preferred a more linear timeline instead of bouncing back and forth。

Brilliant! Just finished reading。 Packed full of insight, especially re Fleming and era but also how Bond has evolved into Craig! Need to re-read as so much info to absorb。 Makes reruns of books and films a necessity。
