Summary

For the past six months, newly chosen Green Lantern Sojourner "Jo" Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people。 The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel。 As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent。
But that's all about to change in this new maxiseries that gives a DC Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!

I'll be honest, I picked up Far Sector because of Jamal Campbell's artwork more than anything else, but the story is equally as impressive so it was a win-win overall。 N。K。 Jemisin weaves a political mystery yarn across these twelve issues that introduces a unique society with multiple factions and beliefs all before pulling the rug out from under them and leaving it all completely different from the way she found it。 It's ambitious, but she pulls it off as if she's been writing comics forever。J I'll be honest, I picked up Far Sector because of Jamal Campbell's artwork more than anything else, but the story is equally as impressive so it was a win-win overall。 N。K。 Jemisin weaves a political mystery yarn across these twelve issues that introduces a unique society with multiple factions and beliefs all before pulling the rug out from under them and leaving it all completely different from the way she found it。 It's ambitious, but she pulls it off as if she's been writing comics forever。Jo Mullein has to be one of the best new DC characters in ages as well - she's fun, she's strong, and she doesn't take crap from anyone。 The perfect character for this story, and the flashbacks to her life pre-Green Lantern only add to the intrigue。 I can't wait to see her interact more with the DC Universe at large。And of course, Campbell's art is gorgeous。 He draws and colours all twelve issues, and everything just looks wonderful。 His art style often runs the risk of feeling static, but the momentum and the energy just bleeds off the pages here。Far Sector could have easily just been a one-and-done story that no one paid attention to, but brilliantly tight writing and drop-dead visuals mean it's one that you absolutely should take a second look at if you've passed it by。 。。。more

NK Jemisin and Jamal Campbell made me care about a Green Lantern story。 Care a LOT about it。 Jo is one sexy badass queer bitch and saves lives while doing it with sweet moves。

N。K。 Jemisin worldbuilding the hell out of a Green Lantern story, making it all feel new again + Jamal Campbell on art and colors (the COLORS!) had me reading each issue over and over again。 Top-notch comics right here, big ideas, thoughtful storytelling, and a cool new Green Lantern。I hope there's more coming from this team featuring Lantern Mullein。 I'm excited to learn more about her。 N。K。 Jemisin worldbuilding the hell out of a Green Lantern story, making it all feel new again + Jamal Campbell on art and colors (the COLORS!) had me reading each issue over and over again。 Top-notch comics right here, big ideas, thoughtful storytelling, and a cool new Green Lantern。I hope there's more coming from this team featuring Lantern Mullein。 I'm excited to learn more about her。 。。。more

An excellent Green Lantern series。 More solid and timely sci-fi from Jemisin。

Struggled with the idea of memes as currency and done of the dialogue choices, but overall it was good。

Blurb: A masterpiece of the Beautiful, the Bizarre and everything in-between。 I must confess, that of the great pantheon of Superheroes (or 'Metahumans' as DC would have us say), The Green Lantern has always been to me an after-thought。 I never quite warmed-up to the character (regardless of whoever was under the mask) and compared to the other greats of the DC universe, I found Green Lantern to be quite superfluous。 In fact the only thing I have ever enjoyed about The Green Lantern Corps, has Blurb: A masterpiece of the Beautiful, the Bizarre and everything in-between。 I must confess, that of the great pantheon of Superheroes (or 'Metahumans' as DC would have us say), The Green Lantern has always been to me an after-thought。 I never quite warmed-up to the character (regardless of whoever was under the mask) and compared to the other greats of the DC universe, I found Green Lantern to be quite superfluous。 In fact the only thing I have ever enjoyed about The Green Lantern Corps, has been their stirringly eloquent oath。 However, N。K。 Jemisin has opened my eyes to an iteration of the character which I cannot get enough of。 I suppose the best thing about this story is its overall disconnect from the rest of Green Lantern universe。 We are given a world, we are given a Green Lantern and above all, we are given an engaging and intriguing murder-mystery which brings to mind the great detective-noirs of old。 Indeed there is a moment in the story where our protagonist Sojourner (I love her name) 'Jo' Mullein draws parallels between her conundrum and those faced by the eponymous 'noir-guy' from the films。 For a story of such emotional weight, there are moments of hilarious self-awareness which provide just the right amount of levity, preventing a cloying effect on the palette。 This is also, my first time reading an N。K。 Jemisin story。 And if popular word is to be believed, then this story is par for the course when it comes to any N。K。 Jemisin work。 Be it the development of characters, their sexual proclivities, the allegories drawn from real-world events and most importantly, the vulnerabilities (both personal and societal)。 The artwork does an excellent job of keeping up with the narration, where Jemisin's words carry weight, Campbell's art shows us just where and how that weight is distributed。 The panel-layouts were neat and there was always a method in even the most maddeningly frantic of panels。 The story while complete, ends on a note that hints at more to come in the life of Lantern Jo Mullein, and if it is so, then I shall keep a weather eye on the horizon for that flash of green。 Through the brightest day, and the blackest night。 。。。more

Wow, this was great。 I am not terribly familiar with the Green Lantern, but this gave me enough info that it didn't matter。 Plus, the world-building was fantastic。 I loved all of the alien races and their flawed city, I loved a good number of the characters, I loved the way that Jemisin managed to tell a deep and compelling story in just 12 issues, and in general, I just loved this comic。 Strongly recommended。 Wow, this was great。 I am not terribly familiar with the Green Lantern, but this gave me enough info that it didn't matter。 Plus, the world-building was fantastic。 I loved all of the alien races and their flawed city, I loved a good number of the characters, I loved the way that Jemisin managed to tell a deep and compelling story in just 12 issues, and in general, I just loved this comic。 Strongly recommended。 。。。more

A high-octane murder mystery set in one of the most fascinating and imaginative scifi worlds I've ever read, with a Green Lantern I actually like hitting the hard-light streets。 This hit all the hallmarks of good scifi for me, and I certainly hope this won't be the last we see of Jo。 A high-octane murder mystery set in one of the most fascinating and imaginative scifi worlds I've ever read, with a Green Lantern I actually like hitting the hard-light streets。 This hit all the hallmarks of good scifi for me, and I certainly hope this won't be the last we see of Jo。 。。。more

Please skip if you’re looking for an interesting story。 Please skip if you’re looking for a competent Green Lantern book。 Please。 Trust me on this。 You will be disappointed。 The art is the only redeeming quality。 On the bright side, now that Jo has joined the ongoing Green Lantern title we will get an opportunity to see her grow under better writers。 That’s all folks。

The first issue of the series (full disclosure read as digital floppies) was what really got me to try Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy。 Yeah, I know this is a comic, but for her first foray into the medium, because this is different than writing novels, she really does a great job。Jemisin takes the skeleton of the Green Lantern concept, some of which is classic SF/space Opera and updates it for 2021。 And, while someone is likely to bash me for this, Jemisin deals with voter suppression, sentience The first issue of the series (full disclosure read as digital floppies) was what really got me to try Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy。 Yeah, I know this is a comic, but for her first foray into the medium, because this is different than writing novels, she really does a great job。Jemisin takes the skeleton of the Green Lantern concept, some of which is classic SF/space Opera and updates it for 2021。 And, while someone is likely to bash me for this, Jemisin deals with voter suppression, sentience, race, policing issues, and sexuality without hitting the reader over the head。 I have nothing against allegory and message fiction。 But, living in an era where movines such as Blazing saddles, of which Richard Pryor was one of the writers, could probably not get made, heavy handed check box (oh lets do this issue x, then issue b and make sure we stay within no offense levels) fiction has become tiresome。BTW way later this week I'll probably be reading DC Comics Pride month special-and there I know the writers and publisher are going for a specific message。 From the previews I've read I'll probably enjoy it。There are some tweaks to Sojourner Mullein's powers and role as a Green Lantern。 A little less of a space cop, a little more guardian/protector role in a space complex composed of multiple races with naturally multiple issues。 Jo, over the course of the story, is not only revealed as bi-sexual and arguably dealing with PTSD and race issues from her time in the military, but damn I think she comes off as a three dimensional character。In addition, Jemisin creates, no surprise if you have read her novels, a complex alien environment。This will almost certainly read better in the trade paperback collection。 。。。more

Unique touches make this character and world compelling as the former dives further into the depressing familiarity of the latter。

The final issue landed today and I just finished it。 This whole series was a blast。 Whilst the series was delivered under DC's young adult imprint, this did not annoy me as it normally would。A city in space with 3 distinct races who, given their history, have decided to ban emotion。 Into the mix throw a human Green Lantern and see what happens。 That's the elevator pitch but does little justice to what NK Jemisin and Jamal Campbell achieved here。 There was a lot packed into this and it had breadt The final issue landed today and I just finished it。 This whole series was a blast。 Whilst the series was delivered under DC's young adult imprint, this did not annoy me as it normally would。A city in space with 3 distinct races who, given their history, have decided to ban emotion。 Into the mix throw a human Green Lantern and see what happens。 That's the elevator pitch but does little justice to what NK Jemisin and Jamal Campbell achieved here。 There was a lot packed into this and it had breadth and heft with some rather though provoking ideas。Right off the bat, NK Jemisin shows a mastery of the comics form。 The pacing is spot on and she gives room for the artist to tell the story。 Further, DC made the wise decision of sticking with the artist when things fell behind。 I always feel comics are better for one artistic voice, something that I accept is logistically difficult to achieve。This had a light tone, despite the weighty ideas being explored and there was always a little lighter moment (comedy, romance etc) when the story needed it。I also give high praise for the decision to keep it a limited series。Highly recommended。 。。。more

An amazing comic written by an even better author that came out exactly the time when it should have。 As of today, I just finished reading all 12 issues and I'm so sad to see it gone。I have always had a difficult relationship with Green Lantern - what with them being almost omnipotent space cops and all - but the new Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein is a fantastic character, demonstrating all the interesting moral and personal choices that would come from being a minority of one serving as a peace An amazing comic written by an even better author that came out exactly the time when it should have。 As of today, I just finished reading all 12 issues and I'm so sad to see it gone。I have always had a difficult relationship with Green Lantern - what with them being almost omnipotent space cops and all - but the new Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein is a fantastic character, demonstrating all the interesting moral and personal choices that would come from being a minority of one serving as a peacekeeper in a strange world。 The plot is also great- a classic whodunnit with a twist that I don’t think anyone could see coming。 But what really shines here is the setting。 N。K。 Jemisin is known for her world building, and “The City Enduring”- a city where 5 previously warring species all gave up their emotions to coexist- is probably the most interesting and nuanced setting for a comic book series since Batman: No Mans Land。 There may be some people that will not like some of the commentary that this book has, particularly around the concepts of power, policing, and race。 But I personally thought it is one of the best and most open addresses to those questions that the medium of superhero comics has produced recently。 This series got me back into comic books after drifting away from it for 5 years, and it will make anyone love comics。 Great intro to the DC universe of the 21st century and one of the best Green Lantern stories written in the last 20 years。 。。。more

Review for issues 1 to 7。This series exceeded my expectations! But that'll teach me to underestimate N。 K。 Jemisin's brilliance!
