Summary

Veronica McCreedy is about to have the journey of a lifetime 。 。 。

Veronica McCreedy lives in a mansion by the sea。 She loves a nice cup of Darjeeling tea whilst watching a good wildlife documentary。 And she’s never seen without her ruby-red lipstick。

Although these days Veronica is rarely seen by anyone because, at 85, her days are spent mostly at home, alone。

She can be found either collecting litter from the beach (‘people who litter the countryside should be shot’), trying to locate her glasses (‘someone must have moved them’) or shouting
instructions to her assistant, Eileen (‘Eileen, door!’)。

Veronica doesn’t have family or friends nearby。 Not that she knows about, anyway 。 。 。 And she has no idea where she’s going to leave her considerable wealth when she dies。

But today 。 。 。 today Veronica is going to make a decision that will change all of this。

This was a quick enjoyable read。 Simple story about an elderly lady and her grandson who she did not know she had and finds when she is 86 years old。 Then enters her interest in penquins。 Not a believable story but a nice summer read。

This is such a heartwarming read and I really enjoyed it, finding it hard to out down! I loved all of the characters particularly the flippered ones! I am a fan of alternating voices so enjoyed resding both Veronica and Patrick’s points of view。 I especially loved Veronica’s diary entries, finding them fascinating (I learnt some new things about the war) and heartbreaking in equal measure。 These were done so well I think they could almost form the basis of a whole book in itself! Obviously I loved all the penguin content, who wouldn’t and it did make me look at these creatures in a different light。 This reminded me of books such as the lido and all the lonely people。 I understand the Eleanor Oliphant comparisons but I don’t think I would make them myself。 The character of Veronica McCreedy reminded me of the main character in the Cactus, mainly because of her spikiness and stubbornness (although a I could not finish the cactus!)。Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is after a heartwarming, cosy read with substance and plenty of penguins! This was very nearly 5 stars for me, the only thing was I think it was about 30-50 pages too long for me and I was finding myself getting a little impatient for it to end! Other than that a really enjoyable read。 。。。more

Usual tale of cranky old lady with misfit grandson looking back in her life 。。 but it was really sweet and a bit different 。。 I enjoyed it。 I don't think you can just lob up to Antartica like a tourist booking a trip to London but hey 。。 Usual tale of cranky old lady with misfit grandson looking back in her life 。。 but it was really sweet and a bit different 。。 I enjoyed it。 I don't think you can just lob up to Antartica like a tourist booking a trip to London but hey 。。 。。。more

This book is the delightful tale of Veronica McCreedy, an octogenarian whose life experiences made her very crusty indeed。 Charming all around。

The premise intrigued me - the book didn't disappoint! An 85 year old proper lady wants to leave her fortune to penguins - the journey is a fun and educational story in many ways。 I love penguins and really enjoyed getting more insight into their lives。 The people are great too and they evolve through the story。 This is a book that will be shared at book club and take a proud place in my library。 The premise intrigued me - the book didn't disappoint! This is a cute ass book full of really nice redeeming characters and it makes u smile and cry and maybe it's a bit twee but its proper feelgood so it gets the benefit of the doubt。 Really impressed by the author, especially in her depiction of *SPOILER* the afterlife/death。 Anyway it's a really good book and it had me reading it in all my spare time, including while I was walking to the shops which is just a bit unnecessary u kno so it must be really good。 This is a cute ass book full of really nice redeeming characters and it makes u smile and cry and maybe it's a bit twee but its proper feelgood so it gets the benefit of the doubt。 Really impressed by the author, especially in her depiction of *SPOILER* the afterlife/death。 Anyway it's a really good book and it had me reading it in all my spare time, including while I was walking to the shops which is just a bit unnecessary u kno so it must be really good。 。。。more

Such an easy and delightful read。 She brings the characters to life warts and all and although I found it quite predictable I loved all the back stories and interactions。 I'd Ike to think that if I make it to Veronica's age I'd be stubborn enough to set off on a huge adventure like that too。 Such an easy and delightful read。 She brings the characters to life warts and all and although I found it quite predictable I loved all the back stories and interactions。 I'd Ike to think that if I make it to Veronica's age I'd be stubborn enough to set off on a huge adventure like that too。 。。。more

A wonderful bookAs this is a totally different book to my usual choice, I was immensely surprised to find how much I absolutely loved reading it。 The story line from human to penguin, really catches your attention。 I also like the ways in which the story line is weaved together and the descriptions in your minds eye become real。 A wonderful book。

This was September’s choice at Novels&Natter bookclub on Facebook。 I assumed it was going to be a nice easy read featuring cute penguins。 What I didn’t expect was that it wouldn’t be the penguins that captured my heart but a grumpy, stubborn octogenarian with a love of a glamorous handbag and not much else。Veronica is everything I never knew I needed in a protagonist, she has a fabulous inner dialogue which she tactfully changes when she opens her mouth。 After watching a wildlife documentary she This was September’s choice at Novels&Natter bookclub on Facebook。 I assumed it was going to be a nice easy read featuring cute penguins。 What I didn’t expect was that it wouldn’t be the penguins that captured my heart but a grumpy, stubborn octogenarian with a love of a glamorous handbag and not much else。Veronica is everything I never knew I needed in a protagonist, she has a fabulous inner dialogue which she tactfully changes when she opens her mouth。 After watching a wildlife documentary she decides on a whim she will leave her millions to a research centre studying Adélie penguins on Locket Island in Antarctica。 Only after she has visited to make sure they are worthy and ruled out having any living relatives though。Enter grandson Patrick, dope smoking, work shy and recently dumped he is everything Veronica abhors。 While Veronica is annoying everyone at the research centre Patrick is sent a box containing her personal journals and while Patrick may not like the present Veronica much he loves the teenage girl he reads about。This is where the book took a real turn for me, it became historical fiction and explored prisoners of war and the freedoms they had, sent to work in the countryside。 Veronica experiences some terrifying losses and you come to understand why she has built a hardness around her heart。The author writes with beautiful clarity from both an elderly woman and young adult male perspective。 The characters really make this book, from Eileen who regularly helps Veronica at home to the staff at the research centre。 All are slightly eccentric and absolutely wonderful。There is a clear message at the heart of this book about climate change and also a little romance, some funny moments and not forgetting some very cute penguins。 It really is something quite special。 。。。more
