Summary

‘I see my story as a suite of songs that have a magical connection。 I never understood that connection until I sat down to write。 It was then that the magic started to flow。’

Let Love Rule is a work of deep reflection。 Lenny Kravitz looks back at his life with candor, self-scrutiny, and humour。

‘My life is all about opposites,’ he writes。 ‘Black and white。 Jewish and Christian。 The Jackson 5 and Led Zeppelin。 I accepted my Gemini soul。 I owned it。 I adored it。 Yins and yangs mingled in various parts of my heart and mind, giving me balance and fueling my curiosity and comfort。’

Let Love Rule covers a vast canvas stretching from Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant, Los Angeles’s Baldwin Hills, Beverly Hills, and finally to France, England and Germany。 It’s the story of a wildly creative kid who, despite tough struggles at school and extreme tension at home, finds salvation in music。 We see him grow as a musician and ultimately a master songwriter, producer, and performer。

We also see Lenny’s spiritual growth-and the powerful way in which spirit informs his music。 The cast of characters surrounding Lenny is extraordinary: his father, Sy, a high-powered news executive; his mother, Roxie Roker, a television star; and Lisa Bonet, the young actress who becomes his muse。

The central character, of course, is Lenny, who, despite his great aspirational energy, turns down record deal after record deal until he finds his true voice。The creation of that voice, the same voice that is able to declare ‘Let Love Rule’ to an international audience, is the very heart of this story。

‘Whether recording, performing, or writing a book,’ says Lenny, ‘my art is about listening to the inspiration inside and then sharing it with people。 Art must bring the world closer together。’

What an open and honest story about the joys, trials and tribulations of being part of a family。 The vast inspirations and experiences that drove an artist to create his unique sound。 Great read I can hardly wait for part two。

Poetic in his prose, Kravitz maintains a rhythm and beat in his writing that reflects his musicality。 You will find yourself eager to accompany Kravitz as he takes you on his undulating journey of pursuing a musical career, facing a distinct flavor of obstacles due to both his nature and his parents presence in the entertainment industry。 Filled with characters of the real world you will no doubt recognize, there is an abundance of musical history intertwined in this biography; however, it is no Poetic in his prose, Kravitz maintains a rhythm and beat in his writing that reflects his musicality。 You will find yourself eager to accompany Kravitz as he takes you on his undulating journey of pursuing a musical career, facing a distinct flavor of obstacles due to both his nature and his parents presence in the entertainment industry。 Filled with characters of the real world you will no doubt recognize, there is an abundance of musical history intertwined in this biography; however, it is not just the music that will capture you in this story, Kravitz’s connection to and interest in his heritage provides an additional storyline that will surprise and delight you。 。。。more

Five stars on audiobook, probably less if I’d read it。 I feel like you’re missing half the story without the audiobook。

I highly recommend this audio book, read by Lenny Kravitz himself。 I love learning about people’s passion and where it stems from。 I’m not even a LK fan and I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 I’m kinda tempted to make a Spotify playlist with all his musical influences and his songs。

This is wall to wall name dropping。 And honestly, not mad。 Lenny describing meeting Lisa Bonet is electric。 How is it not the greatest love story of our times?Book ends before they break up, with the promise of part two to come。 So until that arrives I’m just going to imagine they’re still being bohemians at Venice Beach。

What do you know about Lenny Kravitz? Probably about as much as me - that unfortunate incident with some leather trousers at a concert in Stockholm, he married Lisa Bonet, he was in Hunger Games and he sings Are You Gonna Go My Way amongst other fabulous tunes。Well after reading this, I can safely say that Lenny is cool。 He is humble。 He is down to earth。 And this makes him even more sexy。 Yes, he is very sexy 😍He knew everyone! I cannot wait to read it!Also FYI: the Audiobook is narrated by Lenny Kravitz himself so go and drool to the sounds of his dulcet tones ♥️ 。。。more

…”He simply told Dad that we were all entitled to our own interpretations。 There was nothing wrong with doubt。 After all, without doubt, there was no real faith。”Interesting reading the memoir of someone my own age but with a completely different life and lifestyle。 Not the most profound of the memoirs I’ve read but interesting。

While Lenny Kravitz has lead an interesting life full of drugs, sex, and rock ‘n roll, his story telling is weak and a book that has so much potential to be great turns out to be just good。 The name dropping got tiresome, I listened to the audiobook and his narration seemed almost devoid of emotion。 Maybe I wasn’t pulled in because i am not a Kravitz fan, I’m giving this 3 and a half stars。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I do not consider myself a Lenny megafan or even someone who really followed his career。 At the same time, Lenny Kravitz’ music was a staple of my high school and college experience。 My sense of him as a musician was intensity and drive and I was curious to learn something of his life and what his perception is of his road to success。 Kravitz does have an interesting history。 I was disappointed to learn that he’s a total pot head; though given the other options that doesn’t seem so bad。 One anno I do not consider myself a Lenny megafan or even someone who really followed his career。 At the same time, Lenny Kravitz’ music was a staple of my high school and college experience。 My sense of him as a musician was intensity and drive and I was curious to learn something of his life and what his perception is of his road to success。 Kravitz does have an interesting history。 I was disappointed to learn that he’s a total pot head; though given the other options that doesn’t seem so bad。 One annoying point is that there didn’t seem to be a proper ending but was instead very much a to be continued。。。。 The book would have been stronger if it seemed that the ending also closed a specific chapter in Kravitz’ life。 I did appreciate the episodic, flashbulb memory quality to the way the incidents in his life were presented。 It lended verisimilitude to the presentation and contrasts with a memoir like Moby’s Porcelain which seems perhaps too detailed and linear in its style。 All in all a fairly interesting read。 。。。more

Enjoyed listening to him narrate the audiobook。 This covers his life from childhood until the release of his first album。 I’ll read the book if he continues his story。

Enjoyed learning about Lenny’s life and music。 He had such an interesting and rich childhood。 I’m glad I listened to the audiobook because you could really hear his passion and drive, especially about his desires to make authentic music。 And I appreciated he put in some snips of his songs so you could hear what he was talking about。 He ended by making it sound like he will write another book(s) about the rest of his life。 I look forward to reading them。

It’s the story of a privileged kid that is narcissistic but well meaning。 Lots of name dropping is this short book。 It is well written。

I really enjoyed this。 Lenny Kravitz has LIVED and grew up knowing all of the greats。 I enjoyed hearing about his mother Roxie Roker and how he met Lisa Bonet。 Lenny had me falling in love with Lisa by the way he talked about her。 I'm guessing there will be a part two because this ends before his mother's untimely passing and before Lisa and him divorce。 Excited to read or listen to more about his amazing life。 I really enjoyed this。 Lenny Kravitz has LIVED and grew up knowing all of the greats。 I enjoyed hearing about his mother Roxie Roker and how he met Lisa Bonet。 Lenny had me falling in love with Lisa by the way he talked about her。 I'm guessing there will be a part two because this ends before his mother's untimely passing and before Lisa and him divorce。 Excited to read or listen to more about his amazing life。 。。。more

I find memoirs / biographies interesting, but rarely are they well-written enough to be notable。 This is one of those - interesting to learn more about Lenny’s background, but didn’t stand out。 I was also most interested to learn about his current relationship with his ex wife and her new husband, but the book ends just as he’s achieving success with his first album and is still married to Lisa Bonet。 “To be continued,” so I’ll wait for the next book…

Megan

Of course it was good! Its Lenny Kravitz。 💗

I started to read this, but was encouraged to do audio book, so glad I did。 You should too!

🖤 I swore off memoirs for a while after reading The Promised Land but after hearing a sample of this book I was hooked。🖤 Lenny Kravitz's voice is so smooth and calming。 I'm talking ASMR on steroids。🖤 The singing incorporated throughout is just the motivation needed to see him in concert。🖤 His love for his mother (Roxi Roker) is evident throughout this book。🖤 The road taken to become Lenny Kravitz, The Rock Star, was not easy。🖤 Never judge an artist by their appearance。 I'm not sure what I though 🖤 I swore off memoirs for a while after reading The Promised Land but after hearing a sample of this book I was hooked。🖤 Lenny Kravitz's voice is so smooth and calming。 I'm talking ASMR on steroids。🖤 The singing incorporated throughout is just the motivation needed to see him in concert。🖤 His love for his mother (Roxi Roker) is evident throughout this book。🖤 The road taken to become Lenny Kravitz, The Rock Star, was not easy。🖤 Never judge an artist by their appearance。 I'm not sure what I thought about Lenny Kravitz but I never imagined what I read (listened to) was it。🖤 The ending leads me to believe their will be another memoir in this series。🖤 4。5/ stars 。。。more

I really didn’t know much about Lenny beyond his music and previous relationship with Lisa Bonet。 It was not the most compelling read but it moved along swiftly at least。 I’d say it’s more of a 2。5 ⭐️ for me。

Great audiobook, loved that he narrated it himself。 One of the best celebrity memoirs I’ve read, but definitely ended too soon - I want more!

The book moved fast, kept my interest but was a bit light on details。 I’m not really a fan of his music but did enjoy the book。 I wish the ending wasn’t so abrupt。 It seemed to leave out big parts of his life…but maybe it’s because he plans to write another book。 Others commented that he name dropped a lot but his mom was famous and had connections and he grew up knowing a lot of famous people。 I don’t think he named dropped。。just told the story about the role they played in his life。

Lenny has certainly had a very unique life so far。 It was surprisingly more interesting and in depth than I thought it would be。 We have a lot in common。 I enjoyed the easy style of writing that made the book a quick, but enjoyable read。

Jayne

Kinda pissed he did a to be continued cliffhanger ending 😠

。。。more

Fascinating Storytelling I enjoyed this audiobook from the opening pages of LET LOVE RULE。 I am not a rock and roll music person and knew little about the background and life of Lenny Kravitz。 His dual life with his white father and black mother living part of the week in Manhattan then the rest of the week in Brooklyn with his maternal grandparents was interesting。I was interested to see the variety of music built into his life and how these influences show up in his unique musical sound。 The h Fascinating Storytelling I enjoyed this audiobook from the opening pages of LET LOVE RULE。 I am not a rock and roll music person and knew little about the background and life of Lenny Kravitz。 His dual life with his white father and black mother living part of the week in Manhattan then the rest of the week in Brooklyn with his maternal grandparents was interesting。I was interested to see the variety of music built into his life and how these influences show up in his unique musical sound。 The highs and lows of his life are also built into the storytelling of this book。 As you listen to the author on LET LOVE RULE, occasionally he breaks out into a song which made this listening experience distinct。 I heard this book from cover to cover and recommend it。W。 Terry Whalin is an editor and the author of more than 60 books including his latest 10 Publishing Myths, Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed。 。。。more
