Summary

Susan Mallery, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fool’s Gold romances, proves there’s no place like Happily Inc for the holidays…

There’s no place like Happily Inc for the holidays…

Wynn Beauchene has a thriving business, a great kid and a mildly embarrassing crush on the guy next door—local cop Garrick McCabe。 She’s a strong, independent woman who can’t help dreaming what-if about a man she barely knows。 Until he needs her help…

Garrick’s pregnant daughter will be home for Christmas, and his house needs a woman’s touch。 Garrick and his little girl were tight once and he’s hoping a small-town Christmas will bring her back to him。 But thawing his daughter’s frosty attitude will take more than a few twinkle lights。 Maybe sharing the holiday with Wynn and her son will remind her of the joy of family。

As the season works its magic on these wounded souls, Wynn realizes it’s time to stop punishing herself for a painful secret, while Garrick remains haunted by the ghosts of past mistakes。 Will he allow Wynn to open the only gift she truly wants—his heart?

Don’t miss Susan Mallery’s latest book, The Stepsisters! A heartfelt tale of friendship between two women who used to be sisters。

This won’t be winning any literature awards! It’s totally bubble gum reading。 Also there was one scene I had to skip…just saying for those of my friends who share my feelings on that kind of thing。

Another great Susan Mallery romance!!I loved the relationship between Wynn & Garrick。 But the relationship between Garrick & his daughter Joylynn was what got to me。 You know there are so many father/daughter relationships that are estranged。 So glad my dad and I had a great relationship。 ❤️

novel is Book 6 in the series, Happily Inc。, which is the name of a fictional, small, California, tourist town whose brand is that of a “wedding destination founded on a fairy tale。” Because there have been five other books before this one, as is common for a series such as this, a great many of the romantic protagonists from the previous books show up frequently in this story。 It is currently the start of the holiday season in Happily, Inc。, just before Thanksgiving。Wynn Beauchene is an attractive, 34-year-old, successful graphic designer and devoted, cookie-baking, single mother of a 14-year-old boy, who is every mother’s dream of a compliant, loving son。 Garrick McCabe is a handsome, ripped, 38-year-old cop whom she has been longing to date the whole of the past year that he has lived next door to her。 Unfortunately, not only has Garrick never asked her out, he’s never even flirted with her, and she has yet to summon the courage to take matters into her own hands and ask him out herself。 But matters take a sudden turn toward a much closer connection with gorgeous Garrick on the day that he knocks on her door for the very first time。 He diffidently explains that his 20-year-old, estranged daughter, Joy, is coming to stay with him over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and he desperately needs help turning his rather bare and cheerless house into a warm, welcoming home on Joy’s behalf。 Garrick explains to Wynn that Joy’s husband is in the military and is currently on deployment at the worst possible time, because Joy is pregnant with her first child, which is due Christmas day。 Joy’s mother has a houseful of Joy’s much younger, rambunctious half-siblings, and Joy has been constantly complaining about the kids to her mother, who is more than ready to offload her rude, entitled twit of a daughter to Garrick, because Joy is ruining the holidays for everyone。 Joy’s mother has decided that it is long past time that Joy gets over her five years of refusing to see Garrick, for no known reason。 Because he has himself longed, all this time, to find out why Joy has rejected him and get back in her good graces, Garrick is more than happy to have the chance to spend time with Joy in close quarters, where she can’t avoid seeing him and talking to him。 He is hoping against hope that he can regain the close relationship with his daughter that he had before she rejected him。Garrick’s primary goal in this story is to do anything he possibly can to become close to his estranged daughter again。 He has had one failed marriage—though not with Joy’s mother, whom he accidentally impregnated when they were both 16 years old—and never wants to marry again。Wynn’s primary goal in this story is to be of service to Garrick in any way possible—whatever favor he wants from her to win back the affection of his daughter, she’s there to help make it happen。 Wynn has never been married, but kind of, sort of, thinks she might like to get married and maybe, possibly, have another child。 Joy’s primary goal in this story is to resentfully demand that her entire family cater to her every whim since she is pregnant。 She apparently doesn’t have a job, hasn’t had one for quite some time, if ever, and there is no indication she has any training for a job or any plans to work in the future。 It is a truly remarkable occurrence that a dedicated young soldier has decided that this infantile brat would be capable of surviving the challenging life of a military spouse。This book is told in the classic manner of mainstream, romance fiction, from the dual point of view of the heroine and the hero, but we occasionally get the point of view of Joy as well。 The structure of this novel consists of the following rather humdrum events:—Multiple scenes with detailed descriptions of shopping expeditions in which Wynn and Garrick purchase endless items to decorate and furnish Garrick’s home。—Multiple scenes with detailed descriptions of the food prepared and served at meals at Wynn’s house, at Garrick’s house, and at various restaurants。—Multiple scenes with detailed descriptions of Wynn and her friends planning weddings。—Multiple scenes in which Joy whines to anyone who will listen about how much she dislikes the discomforts of her pregnancy or is engaged in pettishly railing at her father。—Multiple scenes in which Wynn, Garrick, Joy’s mother, and even Wynn’s teenage son codependently prop up Joy’s selfish rudeness by continually trying to coax her out of her childish sulks。 In between all of the above, there are occasional stolen moments when Wynn and Garrick gradually move forward, in “slow burn” fashion, toward a physical and romantic relationship。 It is not a spoiler to say that they achieve an eventual HEA, because this is a romance novel。If you are a fan of small-town romances which are “low-angst” (which is code for nothing much happens), you might possibly enjoy this book。I rate this book as follows:Heroine: 3 No one thought to get her into therapy or try to figure out what was going on? Not parents of the year here, for sure。 I just really hate when books have major issues like this cleared up with a good talk, or taking time for yourself or some other trifling crap。 How about real mental health care, thank you very much。 But nope, she just needed the loving restorative power of Happily Inc。 Sigh。 Hunter is a little much too。 Most of the children in Mallery books are just too good to be true。 Even if they do have problems, they're fixed by the end of the book, but most of the time they are like Hunter。 Well balanced, good, perfectly polite and courteous Stepford children。 So we get to the big issue which is that Hunter tried to join Junior ROTC without telling his mother。 This is apparently the worst thing he's ever done (seriously)。 Another thing that bugged me, too - I get that Mallery has done glorification of military and police officers before, and seems to have a special place in her heart for torture stories as being hot and sexy (ick) but it just got to me more this time。 I mean, Mallery writes how Wynn thinks Garrick's torture scars are sexy。 Ok, she thought that before knowing they were actually from being tortured, but she did still think they were from line of duty in some way, so still。 Ew。 And the story about his partner was just so over the top。 It was a lot to take in (yeah, over the top, but also once he explains it, it's over。 Done。 It added nothing to the story at all。)。 Oh, and there's a shooting at work and Garrick thinks about how the abusive father deserved to be killed by police。 I mean, not Mallery's fault that I read this after reading about the most recent incident of a police officer killing someone, but to me, it felt like she was writing this in reaction to all the US has been talking about the past few years。 Like, "See? These people are scum and deserve to be killed in the streets。" That was definitely Garrick's attitude at least。 This incident by the way has nothing to do with the plot。 It was completely unnecessary and added nothing, except letting us know that Garrick is ok with certain people being killed by police。 Good to know。 And finally, the last minute romantic conflict was just ridiculous。 Absolutely stupid。 Other than Mallery's usual jokes about men being clueless about anything she deems a woman's thing (har de har har), Garrick seemed like an intelligent man。 But then Wynn says she'd like more kids and Garrick says sure, we can pop out a few while still living in our separate houses and us being neighbors will help with the co-parenting - and has no clue why she's upset about this。 His daughter needed to explain it to him (the daughter who started the book as an utterly spoiled and angry brat and ended the book as a well-adjusted, mature and confident woman - all from the magic of Happily Inc)。 Aside from all that, the romance between Wynn and Garrick was sweet。 It was very slow and other than the idiocy, there was no drama。 But it would have been a much better book if it wasn't so over the top with the DEA, crime lords, torture, undercover knife fights, a woman who dies by throwing herself in front of a bullet for her unrequited love, a teen pregnancy on purpose to "trap" a man, an evil stepmother, etc, etc, etc。 Just really 。 。 。 this book was a lot。 。。。more

Home for the HolidaysHappily This Christmas by Susan Mallery is the sixth book in the Happily Inc series, but my first by this author。 I have heard her name many times however, as she is one of my mom’s favorites, so when this came across my kindle I was so excited to get my first introduction to her work。 While I do think the story would benefit from having read the previous books, it is a standalone that can be appreciated by itself。 Our leading lady Wynn (how adorable is that name?) is a sing Home for the HolidaysHappily This Christmas by Susan Mallery is the sixth book in the Happily Inc series, but my first by this author。 I have heard her name many times however, as she is one of my mom’s favorites, so when this came across my kindle I was so excited to get my first introduction to her work。 While I do think the story would benefit from having read the previous books, it is a standalone that can be appreciated by itself。 Our leading lady Wynn (how adorable is that name?) is a single mom of a young teenager who is starting to realize that it is time for her to start prioritizing her needs and venture back into the dating scene。 Coincidentally around this same time her gorgeous neighbor Garrick begs mercy that she help him prepare to host his estranged, pregnant daughter whose husband is deployed。 His daughter Joylyn is less than pleased to spend time with the father that she feels abandoned her as a young teen and makes that obvious at every opportunity。 It is up to Wynn to help Garrick reconnect with his daughter so they can have the relationship they both have been missing。 From the start, the friendship between Wynn and Garrick was genuinely sweet and supportive as she helped him prepare to see his daughter that he no longer knew due to a misunderstanding years back。 Their interactions were timidly flirtatious and it was a treat to see their relationship build slowly throughout the story。 While Wynn may have provided incite to the female brain, Garrick was able to help her find her way through the terrifying minefield that is dealing with a teenager。 They were the perfect complement to the other’s parenting style and came together as a solid team to deal with the various issues that came their way。 It was obvious from reading other reviews that Joylyn was not a favorite character in this book as she came off obnoxious and entitled, but as someone who has been a young, pregnant wife with a deployed husband It wasn’t hard for me to commiserate with her pain and frustrations。 People are not perfect all of the time, and this was a tiny glimpse into one of the most painful parts of her life。 As she learned the truth about what happened with her father in the past she is able to come to terms with what she lost and how to move forward together with him as a family。 One thing I feel compelled to mention is that while this was set around the holidays and that was a catalyst for Wynn and Garrick getting to know each other better I would not classify this as a “Christmas book。” This was an extremely adorable friends-to-lovers that happens to occur close to Christmas。 It does not make it any less of a great read, but it doesn’t give you the warm hot chocolate with marshmallow feelings you would expect to get with a Christmas themed addition to the series。 After getting brief introductions to the characters from the rest of the series throughout I am confident that I will be diving back in to get to know everyone better very soon。 If you are looking for something to read over your holiday break this is definitely one to reach for。 。。。more
