Summary

Learn the strategy and philosophy of China's most celebrated military theorist with this highly readable and informative edition of The Art of War。

The Art of War by Sun Tzu is the best known and most highly regarded book on military strategy ever written。 Although its wisdom is from ancient China, its principles and advice are timeless—as applicable in the boardroom as they are on the battlefield。

Unlike contemporary translations that have focused too heavily on applying this military classic to corporate conflicts, this definitive interpretation maintains the impact of the original。 Written for martial artists by a martial artist, it is free of academic commentary and ambiguous metaphors, as Hanshi Kaufman uses straightforward prose to explain Sun Tzu's message。 Like the original, this new interpretation is divided into thirteen sections, each presenting vital information on military strategy ranging from assessing opposing armies and the proper treatment of troops to the use of spies。

Many of the things from this book will transcend into other spheres of your life, and so are not just applicable in war。 Some of the things though are very much about war and do not transcend that well into a normal person's life, or maybe I am just too thick skulled to notice。 It has some nice lessons though, whether useful in my life or not。 Many of the things from this book will transcend into other spheres of your life, and so are not just applicable in war。 Some of the things though are very much about war and do not transcend that well into a normal person's life, or maybe I am just too thick skulled to notice。 It has some nice lessons though, whether useful in my life or not。 。。。more

Very interesting, recommend the audiobook read by Aiden Gillen (you can imagine it’s a better fate of Game of Thrones)。 Art of War is a fascinating bit of text and shows phenomenal insight。 However, if you’re not fighting a combatant over the salt marshes In 5th Century BC China, it’s just an interesting example of what a strong leader must take into account during conflict…neither of which are particularly me。 Well worth ticking off though。

NON FICTIONCLASSICSIt was a nice book。 Great, for military, army, war or battle people。 Contains 13 chapter for 96 pages with a bit small font and beautiful cover。 Had glossary of classic literature at the back。 Not perfect for a fiction fantasy person like me。

I mean it’s Sun Tzu you can’t really rate it less that 5 stars。 Im trying to memorize quotes from it to whip out in conversation cause that would be awesome。

I thought this book was quite difficult to read based on the translation and hard to understand what the author wanted to get across at various points。Some parts were quite interesting, however, unless you’re in the army, a dictator or anyone that’s interested in the art of war, I would say stay away。Decent read。

Listened to this book because it's narrated by THE Littlefinger。 I will still need to read the book visually to retain the information, though。 This kind of book is something you'll ultimately have to read at your own pace rather than being read to。 Listened to this book because it's narrated by THE Littlefinger。 I will still need to read the book visually to retain the information, though。 This kind of book is something you'll ultimately have to read at your own pace rather than being read to。 。。。more

Pretty much required reading; hard not to appreciate a book that's still relevant after a couple thousand years。 Most of the advice still makes sense today。 I had the Folio Society edition of the book, which goes into great detail about the canonical text and what has changed over the years。 The extra detail here was pretty dry。 Pretty much required reading; hard not to appreciate a book that's still relevant after a couple thousand years。 Most of the advice still makes sense today。 I had the Folio Society edition of the book, which goes into great detail about the canonical text and what has changed over the years。 The extra detail here was pretty dry。 。。。more

Pretty good for 2,500 years ago。 Very logical breakdown of various areas of something I know nothing about。 Can't see too many ways that this would be applied to every day life as some have suggested, probably a good way to be very unpopular。I skipped all of the commentary though as I thought the translations themselves made sense without knowing different interpretations which were almost all the same anyway Pretty good for 2,500 years ago。 Very logical breakdown of various areas of something I know nothing about。 Can't see too many ways that this would be applied to every day life as some have suggested, probably a good way to be very unpopular。I skipped all of the commentary though as I thought the translations themselves made sense without knowing different interpretations which were almost all the same anyway 。。。more

Having the Barnes and Noble Classics version, I read ALL the annotations。 It was extremely informative, although I got lost a bit with the similarity of the names of people。 Who’s who, and why should I care? Although I found the book dry and dull, there were a few thoughts worth noodling over, and a handful of profound statements。 I feel like I probably could have read all the famous quotes from The Art of War and gotten almost as much out of it。

A classic is a classic。 Great read, and quite eye opening regarding the machinations of armies and how best to win a war。 My favorite chapter involved spies and now to use them, the very last。 Honestly a pleasure to give works that deserve a second read a reread。 Useful not just for those in the army, but common folk too。 Lionel did a spectacular job translating this classic。 Get to reading it whenever you’re able!

I would be lying if I say that I understood the entire book。 This is a book which, while written for military use, can be used anywhere as it contains common sense knowledge。 A lot of matter is quite similar to what was written by Aacharya Chanakya。 I will now be searching for a book which explains the philosophy in this ancient text in the modern military warfare context。

I mean this is a small book of general observations on the human condition。 Take from it what you will。 Most intelligent people could deduce these things for themselves, but still interesting。

Kyllä tätä lukiessa hyvin hahmottui, miksi tämä on esimerkiksi tiettyjen yritysjohtajien ”raamattu” - onhan koko juttu yksi pitkä metafora, josta saa sovellettua oppia jos niin vaikka mihin tarpeeseen。 (Ilkeästi voisi myös sanoa, että stoori on niin lyhyt, että siksikin kirja riittänee monelle)。 Itse kelailin lukiessani esihenkilön roolin kautta ja olihan siinä paljon samaa, vaikka toki on aika raadollista miettiä tiimiä ”vihollisena”。

I love the sarcastic reviews of the book。 This book is an easy short read。 Entertaining even though most seems like common sense。 Although it must not be since it seems to be a pretty important book through the ages。 And although I find the parts on chariots and use of fire to not be all that relevant in today’s battle fields, I did find the characteristics one should seek in a general to be spot on。 As well as knowing ones self and the enemy。“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy withou I love the sarcastic reviews of the book。 This book is an easy short read。 Entertaining even though most seems like common sense。 Although it must not be since it seems to be a pretty important book through the ages。 And although I find the parts on chariots and use of fire to not be all that relevant in today’s battle fields, I did find the characteristics one should seek in a general to be spot on。 As well as knowing ones self and the enemy。“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting” 。。。more

This is a change of pace from my usual readings of dark, existential poetry and colorful artist biographies。 I have to admit that this book was collecting simulated dust on my virtual shelf。 It looked like I was delaying its completion on purpose。 That's because I was never in the mood for a possible 4 hour session of a "5th Century Tactical-centric Manual"。 Well, not until today, owing to the fact that picking up "The Art of War by Sun Tzu" is one of the best decisions I have ever made!
