Summary

The audiobook for this one is terrible。 Tried to listen as audiobook and was about to DNF the book because I was bored。 But when switched to physical reading instead and was much improved。 That being said this story was nothing special。 It was fine but will not be continuing the series。

I loved this book so much。 Abel's character development was perfect, he's definitely now one of my all time fav main book characters。 It was wonderful seeing him discover the humanity inside of him slowly but surely。 Noemi was also a great character。 I liked that from her perspective she thought of herself as "cold" but when we saw her from Abel's perspective she was anything but。This was such a fun read I need to get started on the 2nd book asap 💖 I definitely recommend if you like space road t I loved this book so much。 Abel's character development was perfect, he's definitely now one of my all time fav main book characters。 It was wonderful seeing him discover the humanity inside of him slowly but surely。 Noemi was also a great character。 I liked that from her perspective she thought of herself as "cold" but when we saw her from Abel's perspective she was anything but。This was such a fun read I need to get started on the 2nd book asap 💖 I definitely recommend if you like space road trips, lovable awkward android male lead and space war enemies to lovers。 。。。more

Maybe it's because this isn't my favorite genre but I just thought that this was okay。 I was not invested in the world and there wasn't really anything that stood out to me with the characters。 Though I enjoyed the topics of morality。 It brought up a good question of at what point do we stop being human。 I'd give this a 2。7 if I could but I rounded up。 Maybe it's better for people who lean more towards science fiction。 Maybe it's because this isn't my favorite genre but I just thought that this was okay。 I was not invested in the world and there wasn't really anything that stood out to me with the characters。 Though I enjoyed the topics of morality。 It brought up a good question of at what point do we stop being human。 I'd give this a 2。7 if I could but I rounded up。 Maybe it's better for people who lean more towards science fiction。 。。。more

i've been reading LoveBot on Webtoon recently and was wanting romance in a similar vein—sci-fi, love with a robot—especially after the misery of A Little Life。it's one of the better romance novels i've read。 maybe one of the best? following Abel as he slowly became more human was fantastic。 that it tackled colonization, free will, and other things was a welcome surprise, but really i should've known this wouldn't just be a simple romance set in space in the future。i kinda wish Noemi's chapters w i've been reading LoveBot on Webtoon recently and was wanting romance in a similar vein—sci-fi, love with a robot—especially after the misery of A Little Life。it's one of the better romance novels i've read。 maybe one of the best? following Abel as he slowly became more human was fantastic。 that it tackled colonization, free will, and other things was a welcome surprise, but really i should've known this wouldn't just be a simple romance set in space in the future。i kinda wish Noemi's chapters were more distinctive from Abel's in the prose since they were pretty similar。 not a big deal though, still greattttt and i will be reading the sequels thank you very much 。。。more

This book felt like an unfolding of exploration of the mysteries of consciousness, freedom, and love。 Characters developed well。 Never felt too light or heavy - a good lunch meal。

I did not realize how important the romance was to this book, which reduced my enjoyment。 However there are some nice concepts, the world building had some interest, the characters were pretty well motivated。 There were a few plot holes, which always irks。 People that enjoy a romance will probably like this more than me。

TLDR; This is a flawed but good read。 It’s engaging and interesting despite its flaws。 If you are non-religious, it’s still worth the read but brace yourself (it’s not opposed to not having religion, but it’s handled in a way that made me a bit uncomfortable)。 i really don’t know how to feel。 the experience of this book is amazing, but when i start to think about it too much— it sours。 I don’t entirely agree with the philosophy, love making you human, the lack of empathy for the robots who “aren TLDR; This is a flawed but good read。 It’s engaging and interesting despite its flaws。 If you are non-religious, it’s still worth the read but brace yourself (it’s not opposed to not having religion, but it’s handled in a way that made me a bit uncomfortable)。 i really don’t know how to feel。 the experience of this book is amazing, but when i start to think about it too much— it sours。 I don’t entirely agree with the philosophy, love making you human, the lack of empathy for the robots who “aren’t sentient enough”, the lean on religion (while perfectly valid, is uncomfortable for me as someone non-religious)。 Everything feels too obvious (the narrators realllly spell it out) while at the same time feeling not enough。 And i could have done without the romantic subplot。 BUT- for as much as i criticize it- I did love it, i was hooked by the plot, Abel is an interesting and original take on the concept of androids, and the twist about Mansfield, while being predicable, is dramatic and hard hitting。 if you do read it, read the audiobook- the voice actors are amazing and a huge part of what made me love the book so much。 Nate Belge as Abel has my heart 😭🤚 。。。more

Defy the Stars is a stand alone sci-fi book by Claudia Gray。 This book is about and from the point of view of Abel and Noemi。 This story is about Noemi who finds a robot Abel and finds out he is more human than machine that he has feelings and emotions and even dreams。 I liked Able his character and the way the author made him having these feelings for the first time in his "life"。 I didn't like Noemi she is kind of a hippy, while she amplifies Able's character I don't like hers。 This book left Defy the Stars is a stand alone sci-fi book by Claudia Gray。 This book is about and from the point of view of Abel and Noemi。 This story is about Noemi who finds a robot Abel and finds out he is more human than machine that he has feelings and emotions and even dreams。 I liked Able his character and the way the author made him having these feelings for the first time in his "life"。 I didn't like Noemi she is kind of a hippy, while she amplifies Able's character I don't like hers。 This book left me enjoyed and it made me laugh from Able having funny lines and actions。 This I why I liked the book Defy The Stars。 。。。more

The first book in a YA space adventure series that I picked up a free copy of at work。 Deals with some surprisingly complex concepts about what makes us human, and I like the interaction between the two main characters so far, as well as the supporting cast。 Non-stop action starting with the immediately attention-grabbing first two sentences, and continuing all the way through。 Will be heading right into the next book。

Ok, for a light read, but weak in terms of plot and depth of character development。 I enjoyed it, but unlike many books I won't bother re-reading this in the future。 Ok, for a light read, but weak in terms of plot and depth of character development。 I enjoyed it, but unlike many books I won't bother re-reading this in the future。 。。。more

3。5✨: This is a pretty good blend of Sci-fi and romance。 I love Naomi and Abel chemistry。 I didn't give it 5 stars is because I felt that especially in the last act things were just happening too quickly for my taste and I wanted more of the romance。 3。5✨: This is a pretty good blend of Sci-fi and romance。 I love Naomi and Abel chemistry。 I didn't give it 5 stars is because I felt that especially in the last act things were just happening too quickly for my taste and I wanted more of the romance。 。。。more

AH。 IM NOW OBSESSED WITH THIS SERIES。 the world of this was really interesting。 and as a space lover i really like the aspect of exploring the universe and different planets etc so that aspect of this book had me hooked from the start。 but the characters were really good too, i especially enjoyed abel and seeing him evolve and change throughout the book。 and noemi was really smart。 im excited to continue。

It's a good time。 Seems to aimed for a younger audience, perhaps preteens。 The romance is a little too perfect and platonic, the conflict a bit sterilized。 That's fine, it knows what it is and it's not Game of Thrones。 The writing is competent, the voice of Abel is great。 Not my favorite book, but certainly worth my time。 It's a good time。 Seems to aimed for a younger audience, perhaps preteens。 The romance is a little too perfect and platonic, the conflict a bit sterilized。 That's fine, it knows what it is and it's not Game of Thrones。 The writing is competent, the voice of Abel is great。 Not my favorite book, but certainly worth my time。 。。。more

2。5 stars, rounded downFirst of all, I would like to thank Hafsah Faizal for writing the book that gave me the motivation to finish this one。This book wasn't REALLY bad, as such。 There were moments in it that made me laugh and towards the end the main relationship became a lot more interesting and dynamic。But OMG was this book unnecessarily confusing。 During the first 100 pages, I was very tempted to just dnf, it was that bad- too much convoluted plot and information, not enough characterisation 2。5 stars, rounded downFirst of all, I would like to thank Hafsah Faizal for writing the book that gave me the motivation to finish this one。This book wasn't REALLY bad, as such。 There were moments in it that made me laugh and towards the end the main relationship became a lot more interesting and dynamic。But OMG was this book unnecessarily confusing。 During the first 100 pages, I was very tempted to just dnf, it was that bad- too much convoluted plot and information, not enough characterisation。 A lot of times it felt like the author was doing a 'not like other girls' with Noemi and a 'not like other mechs' with Abel which was not a good look。 The plot, to me, was convoluted and the ending was a huge let down for me。 I thought I was going to see some real action and high stakes and I might even cry! But then I realised there are two more books of this (no, I will not be reading the sequel) and then the ending happened and it was like- 'oh, so this was all for nothing'。There were some interesting ethical points brought up, but the only one that was addressed fully was the idea of 'what it is to have a soul' which I sort of got but then again this mech is probably old enough to be the main girl's dad so even if he does have a soul this is certainly not a relationship of equals。 However, the rest of the points really fell flat。 A lot of times it felt a bit preachy- there is a scene where terrorists bomb (I think they bomb? I'm really not sure) an important event and the author must have mentioned that Noemi ABSOLUTELY DID NOT CONDONE TERRORISM NOT NOW NOT EVER NONONO at least three separate times when we only needed to hear it once。There's also the issue of the tagline of this book- 'love is the ultimate rebellion'。 First of all, what rebellion? The plot twist at the end, I admit, was very well thought out and came out of nowhere whilst also making sense which is all one can aspire to。 But one of the characters wasn't really rebelling against anyone。 Like in the loosest sense of the word, they were but not really。 So the tagline was very misleading because it wasn't applicable until the last quarter of the book and even then I think the publisher/author could have thought of a better one。I also have an issue with using this tagline and then including no queer representation (or at least no queer representation, that I, a queer person, remembered or noted)。 'Love is the ultimate rebellion' is pretty exclusive of aromantic people (this definition of love is almost certainly exclusively romantic) as well as being very ignorant of the struggles that people who aren't straight, in this case, face every day。 Love might be the ultimate rebellion, but that is most certainly a queer story to tell- whether it's trans people unapologetically loving themselves or people attracted to the same gender loving who they love, it's certainly a queer story。 This is certainly not the first time a book with little to no queer representation has done something like this, but it doesn't make it any less icky。 On a more positive note, Gray seems to have included some queer rep in her Star Wars novels so progress, I guess?Anyway。 This book certainly wasn't for me。 It's worth noting I don't particularly like YA Sci Fi, especially when there's a lot of romance involved, so if you do enjoy this genre then maybe you'll enjoy it more than I did。 Claudia Gray is a good writer, but the concept, plot and other issues made this a confusing, if light, read for me。 。。。more
