Summary

This is a hard one。 The story of a dysfunctional family that could be our next door neighbors or possibly our own。 Highly readable but I did get lost in a lot of the research and science。 It is heavily medical and pharmaceutical in it's contents。 I am totally ignorant of medications, procedures, and related research。 For me, it was a bit too balanced between whether this book was about a family suffering from the effects of schizophrenia or whether it was a book about research, medicine, and pha This is a hard one。 The story of a dysfunctional family that could be our next door neighbors or possibly our own。 Highly readable but I did get lost in a lot of the research and science。 It is heavily medical and pharmaceutical in it's contents。 I am totally ignorant of medications, procedures, and related research。 For me, it was a bit too balanced between whether this book was about a family suffering from the effects of schizophrenia or whether it was a book about research, medicine, and pharmaceutical treatment。 I got lost in the science of it, but found myself more grounded in the socio dynamics of a very dysfunctional family。 。。。more

What a tragic story。 I thought the author did a great job blending the science with the real life to make it a more interesting read for non-fiction。

Dodaję szóstą gwiazdkę za świetnie opisany proces badań nad schizofrenią。

So good。 Really intense。 Sad at times but also fascinating with all the history of mental illness treatment and the family drama。 Reminded me a bit of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks。

Reading this is like watching a car crash in slow motion。 I couldn’t put it down but also ultimately it’s just me voyeuristically peering through a window into one family’s incredibly unlucky and tragic life, with the primary payoff being “thank goodness that’s not me” rather than any meaningful knowledge gained about the latest advances in schizophrenia treatment (spoilers: not much to report sadly)。 Not sure I feel good about having read this one。

What a fascinating story。 I couldn’t put the book down because it was so interesting to see the storyline progress。 The family members allowed themselves to be so vulnerable when they told their version of the events。 I highly recommend this book。

。。more

It took me three weeks to get through this book。 It must be because of its sad and depressing topic that I often find really hard to endure。 The life of this family is just full of tragic and suffering that it's really hard to take it all in。 But it also shows what a sickness like schizophrenia can do not just to the sick people, but the entire family。 While the story of the Galvin family is definitely interesting, it also often felt quite voyeuristic, exploiting, one-sided, and just to intimate It took me three weeks to get through this book。 It must be because of its sad and depressing topic that I often find really hard to endure。 The life of this family is just full of tragic and suffering that it's really hard to take it all in。 But it also shows what a sickness like schizophrenia can do not just to the sick people, but the entire family。 While the story of the Galvin family is definitely interesting, it also often felt quite voyeuristic, exploiting, one-sided, and just to intimate。 It felt the story of some of the family members was told (mostly the ones who have no schizophrenia) but the others didn't have a say in it, was it because they were dead or probably too sick。 But that made the book a little unbalanced for me。If you are interested in schizophrenia then this might be an interesting book for you to read。 But keep in mind that not everyone mentioned in this book also had a say in it。 。。。more

The Galvins’ story is utterly heartbreaking。 The book itself is well laid out and researched。

This was as really tough read, mostly from the trauma and challenges endured by this family, but also it was a bit on the long side and I had to put down & pick up a number of times to get through。 The other reviews that included some critique about the voices represented being mostly of the women in the family are valid points though unavoidable I imagine, but I would have really liked to have heard the experiences of the boys firsthand。 I thought the author did a good job of remaining as objec This was as really tough read, mostly from the trauma and challenges endured by this family, but also it was a bit on the long side and I had to put down & pick up a number of times to get through。 The other reviews that included some critique about the voices represented being mostly of the women in the family are valid points though unavoidable I imagine, but I would have really liked to have heard the experiences of the boys firsthand。 I thought the author did a good job of remaining as objective as possible。 It definitely gave an inside look at what families of those with schizophrenia go through over the course of a lifetime and the different variations of how symptoms can be exhibited in different people, as well as the immense challenges in trying to better understand and treat this disease。 。。。more

Fascinating and chilling read about mental illness, family trauma, guilt, denial and healing。

This book read a little technical, but 4 stars for such a fascinating story。

I thought this was a well done narrative nonfiction that explored both how schizophrenia affected one family and the history/research of schizophrenia。 This family suffered immensely, and mostly in silence which I think hurt them more in the end。 But it was the 60s & 70s, with mental illness still being hush-hush, so you can't really blame them。 Overall, if you like narrative nonfiction and are interested in this kind of subject, i would definitely recommend picking this up。 I thought this was a well done narrative nonfiction that explored both how schizophrenia affected one family and the history/research of schizophrenia。 This family suffered immensely, and mostly in silence which I think hurt them more in the end。 But it was the 60s & 70s, with mental illness still being hush-hush, so you can't really blame them。 Overall, if you like narrative nonfiction and are interested in this kind of subject, i would definitely recommend picking this up。 。。。more

Allows the reader to step into life of a family w/6 schizophrenic siblings and how treatments as changed due to the contribution of the Galvin family。 I had a paranoid schizophrenic brother& have lived through some of this。 Gave me understanding of how twisted relationships can become as a result。

Tamara

I give this book mixed reviews; the family story was pretty depressing however the history of the field of psychology was very well done。

I found this story a fascinating story of early issues with mental healthcare and research。 It follows a family of 12 children that had six of the sons diagnosed with schizophrenia and other mental health issues。 The institutions and doctors were unable to help this family whose members were born between 1945-1965。 The studies were too new and the medication (too new) that literally killed at least two of the brothers in their later years。 It was a fascinating and tragic story detailing the prob I found this story a fascinating story of early issues with mental healthcare and research。 It follows a family of 12 children that had six of the sons diagnosed with schizophrenia and other mental health issues。 The institutions and doctors were unable to help this family whose members were born between 1945-1965。 The studies were too new and the medication (too new) that literally killed at least two of the brothers in their later years。 It was a fascinating and tragic story detailing the problems with the research and medications available to the family。 I learned to have more empathy for families with members that suffer from mental health issues。 No one is untouched when even one member suffers, the whole family suffers。 I highly recommend this book as a history of the development of psychology and medication in the 20th century。 。。。more

4。5* Meticulously researched and so well-written。 I liked that this followed the personal circumstances of the family but was also interspersed with chapters about the development of psychology and society at the time, providing important context。 Really well done non-fiction。

A frightening look at just how messed up our very recent history with mental health is。 Structure was confusing and covered a lot of territory, but the large family did bring everything together。

Carmen

This is an interesting topic, focusing on a family with a story that should be told。 I’m just not a huge fan of this author’s writing style (I also didn’t enjoy Lost Girls)。 It felt a little bland to me, took a very interesting story and made it seem slow。 There was a lot of room to mix in more history of mental health care, but that was almost completely left out。

Laura Noggle

It's hard to imagine having 12 kids, much less half of them having schizophrenia。 This book was fairly interesting, but it also felt like a real train wreck。 So much of it is quite awful, and I found it to be a drawn out suffering, both the reader's and the family's。 This is my third book on schizophrenia this year, so maybe I'm just tapped out on the topic。 Still, it was a bit too depressing for me。Has anyone seen the screen adaptation? I thought there was a Netflix movie, but I can't find it。“ It's hard to imagine having 12 kids, much less half of them having schizophrenia。 This book was fairly interesting, but it also felt like a real train wreck。 So much of it is quite awful, and I found it to be a drawn out suffering, both the reader's and the family's。 This is my third book on schizophrenia this year, so maybe I'm just tapped out on the topic。 Still, it was a bit too depressing for me。Has anyone seen the screen adaptation? Trigger warning - incest, molestation。 It was an insightful yet heartbreaking memoir about a family mental health crisis spread out over the decades。 It is also shows how poorly mental health has been addressed in the United States。 I have not read anything like it。 I do think I may have enjoyed the mental health treatment history information more than some would。

This one is really sitting with me。 I learned so much about how we go about helping those with mental illness。 I learned a lot about genetics and how it doesn't mean what I thought it meant。 This book has made me want more information on the science of mental illness and other illnesses。 For a fascinating read, dive into this one! Very interesting read。 A little more clinical that I was expecting but still fascinating。

Outstanding。 The story of one family horrifyingly beset with schizophrenia, but much more than that: It's also a social history of how mental illness and in particular schizophrenia has been defined, redefined and misdefined, how it has been viewed and treated and mistreated in our society, the issue of what is "normal," and the failings of our health care "system" and inadequate social safety net。 Difficult stories told with insight and sensitivity。 Outstanding。 The story of one family horrifyingly beset with schizophrenia, but much more than that: It's also a social history of how mental illness and in particular schizophrenia has been defined, redefined and misdefined, how it has been viewed and treated and mistreated in our society, the issue of what is "normal," and the failings of our health care "system" and inadequate social safety net。 Difficult stories told with insight and sensitivity。 。。。more
