Summary

The third installment of Neil Gaiman's seminal series, THE SANDMAN VOL。 3: DREAM COUNTRY, celebrates its 30th anniversary with an all-new edition!

The third book of the Sandman collection is a series of four short comic book stories。 In each of these otherwise unrelated stories, Morpheus serves only as a minor character。 Here we meet the mother of Morpheus's son, find out what cats dream about, and discover the true origin behind Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream。 The latter won a World Fantasy Award for best short story, the first time a comic book was given that honor。

Collects THE SANDMAN #17-20。

This volume is quite unique。 We can see Dream in different situations and we can see the very crude reallity of this vast world that The Sandman has。 The art was one of my favourites the coloring was unique。 Plus we have the script of Calliope, is a good view behind cameras of the making of the saga。

Much shorter than the others because included are script & notes for one of the stories。2021: 3rd time through

An okay set of four self-contained episodes。 Feels like filler, like an interlude before getting back to the main event。

This third outing in Gaiman's "Sandman" series sidesteps the main narrative to present a set of four short stories, three of which feature the eponymous antihero in various guises, and the last of which features, instead, a cameo by his sister, Death。 I enjoyed "Dream Country" more than I did the previous instalments。 This collection functions as an ode to the power of story-telling, a feature that should appeal to many bibliophiles, not least for the many literary references and borrowings that This third outing in Gaiman's "Sandman" series sidesteps the main narrative to present a set of four short stories, three of which feature the eponymous antihero in various guises, and the last of which features, instead, a cameo by his sister, Death。 I enjoyed "Dream Country" more than I did the previous instalments。 This collection functions as an ode to the power of story-telling, a feature that should appeal to many bibliophiles, not least for the many literary references and borrowings that underpin it。 I particularly like the way in which Gaiman slyly queries the boundaries and hierarchies between imagination and reality, as well as the roles of artist, muse, and audience in the process of creative production。 I'm now beginning to get a better feel for, and to find my footing in, this series; consequently, I look forward to picking up Volume 4 soon。 。。。more

Maybe I’ll augment this later, but I want to keep the run of responses going, regardless。 In Short, Dream Country functions as a sturdy and sophisticated bridge to comic book excellence。

This was such a random set of stories I'm not sure what to make of it。 Woefully little Morpheus but A Midsummer Night's Dream was interesting。 This was such a random set of stories I'm not sure what to make of it。 Woefully little Morpheus but A Midsummer Night's Dream was interesting。 。。。more

again, just really wasn't impressed by this one。 couple decent stories, couple boring ones。 i'm not a big fan of the disconnected short stories, at all。 not sure this story is for me。still, i'll continue with the hope that it picks up with the next volume, since that's where the sandman's supposed to hit its stride。 let's see。rating - 3/10 again, just really wasn't impressed by this one。 couple decent stories, couple boring ones。 i'm not a big fan of the disconnected short stories, at all。 not sure this story is for me。still, i'll continue with the hope that it picks up with the next volume, since that's where the sandman's supposed to hit its stride。 let's see。rating - 3/10 。。。more

This feels like a weird step backward to me。 It's still a nice read but where Vol。 2 read as a lot of payoff for all the setup in Vol。 1 while also adding a lot of new stuff to the world, Dream Country feels like just more setup without building on the stuff established in the last 2 volumes, that is to say, it doesn't have all them payoffs like we had in the last Volume。It's not bad。 I just hoped for different pacing, I suppose。 This feels like a weird step backward to me。 It's still a nice read but where Vol。 2 read as a lot of payoff for all the setup in Vol。 1 while also adding a lot of new stuff to the world, Dream Country feels like just more setup without building on the stuff established in the last 2 volumes, that is to say, it doesn't have all them payoffs like we had in the last Volume。It's not bad。 I just hoped for different pacing, I suppose。 。。。more

Okay I think this is where my affair with this series ends。 I'm sorry lol。 It's just the more I was reading this one the more I retroactively disliked the earlier two。 And I'm really sorry but I hate the art style for this series and I also rly hate having to read panels where a woman gets raped and then after that is drawn provocatively and naked its simply :3 not for me。 Like this book possibly retroactively made me dislike the other two? I didn't much care for this one。 The story of Calliope felt a little too cruel and abusive for me, it felt unnecessary。 Like yes, justice was served, but it just。。。。I dunno it felt gratuitous。And the other two stories, the cat one was alright and the midsummer night's dream one was just meh to me。 I guess Puck will come back in some way or another (or else is part of some larger DC lore I don't know about) but I feel like that was my only takeaway。 I didn't much care for this one。 The story of Calliope felt a little too cruel and abusive for me, it felt unnecessary。 Like yes, justice was served, but it just。。。。I dunno it felt gratuitous。And the other two stories, the cat one was alright and the midsummer night's dream one was just meh to me。 I guess Puck will come back in some way or another (or else is part of some larger DC lore I don't know about) but I feel like that was my only takeaway。 。。。more

The first and last stories were my favorite--probably because they were the most disturbing。

This was an OK volume, four short stories so not really a big deal。CALLIOPEThis was the most interesting story。 I liked that there is the personification of the muses and how Madoc becomes obsessed with Calliope, losing his "humanity" in order to achieve glory。Madoc's punishment is really scary and well written, and I liked how we dive a little bit in Dream's background (I hope in future volumes there will be some link with Calliope)。A DREAM OF A THOUSAND CATSThis was pretty meh。 Well okay, "cat This was an OK volume, four short stories so not really a big deal。CALLIOPEThis was the most interesting story。 I liked that there is the personification of the muses and how Madoc becomes obsessed with Calliope, losing his "humanity" in order to achieve glory。Madoc's punishment is really scary and well written, and I liked how we dive a little bit in Dream's background (I hope in future volumes there will be some link with Calliope)。A DREAM OF A THOUSAND CATSThis was pretty meh。 Well okay, "cats can dream", and Morpheus can get different forms and he's also the Dreamlord in cats dreams。 Not really fond of this tho。 Pretty pointless。A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAMWilliam Shakespeare returns in the story by paying a half of his debt with Sandman。 This was a good story, even if I didn't read the original comedy but only knew a glimpse of it。 I like how Oberon and Titania actually exist in another world and Sandman honours them by making them well known again in the human world。Gaiman here wanted to show us his love of literature, and how its power can make something immortal and passed for centuries in human cultures。FACADEDidn't really know Element Girl before this and this wasn't really interesting for me, since I don't care about DC superheroes。 Not a bad story, since it arises an existential dilemma。 。。。more

My least favourite of the first 3 Sandmans。 First and last issue in this one were my favourites, the cat one was a bit boring, and I don't think I know enough about Shakespeare to properly appreciate the 3rd one。 Looking forward to reading the next volume! A mixed volume。 All Sandman issues are full of violence, the TW list would be so long。。。 better google for a list if Sandman interests you。 Will point out TW for rape for issue 1 and TW suicidal thoughts/ wish to die in 4 tho。 The Midsummer Night's Dream in this issue did deserve the prize, tho。 Morpheus strikes a deal with Shakespeare in VOL 2。 Now, he collects and Shakespeare has to perform The Dream infront of the real fey。 Titania and Oberon, Puck and the others enjoy the show and interact w A mixed volume。 All Sandman issues are full of violence, the TW list would be so long。。。 better google for a list if Sandman interests you。 Will point out TW for rape for issue 1 and TW suicidal thoughts/ wish to die in 4 tho。 The Midsummer Night's Dream in this issue did deserve the prize, tho。 Morpheus strikes a deal with Shakespeare in VOL 2。 Now, he collects and Shakespeare has to perform The Dream infront of the real fey。 Titania and Oberon, Puck and the others enjoy the show and interact with the actors who have to deal with the consequences of that later。 Funny stuff。 The last story about Element Girl is what many call the weakest of the volume but I just find it so incredibly sad。。。 。。。more

The third installment in the Sandman series is a disappointment, much shorter than the first two volumes, and uninspired。 It’s as if Gaiman was experiencing the writer’s block the character in his first story has。 That character unblocks himself by acquiring the ageless Calliope, one of the Muses, and I was not wild about the casualness with which Gaiman describes him raping her on their first night。 The second story goes a long way to use the line at the end about it not being possible to get a The third installment in the Sandman series is a disappointment, much shorter than the first two volumes, and uninspired。 It’s as if Gaiman was experiencing the writer’s block the character in his first story has。 That character unblocks himself by acquiring the ageless Calliope, one of the Muses, and I was not wild about the casualness with which Gaiman describes him raping her on their first night。 The second story goes a long way to use the line at the end about it not being possible to get a thousand cats to agree to anything。 The third story has faeries visiting Shakespeare and company and having them put on a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is not all that original。 The lone highlight was the character ‘Death’ in the last story, who, far from the traditional grim reaper, is a youthful looking woman who does her job in a friendly and reasonable way。 Overall not horrible, but this one could have been skipped。 。。。more

It’s not my favourite, but I enjoyed it。

This volume consists of four stand alone tales。“Calliope” is the story of a muse captured by one writer and then passed on to another。 Things do not go well for the second writer once Morpheus gets involved。 A well done dark story。 (4/5)In “A Dream of a Thousand Cats,” a group of cats meet in a graveyard to hear another cat tell a story about how dreams shape the world。 This was a fun story where cats have their own mythology。 (4/5)The first two stories have pencils by Kelly Jones and inks Malco This volume consists of four stand alone tales。“Calliope” is the story of a muse captured by one writer and then passed on to another。 Things do not go well for the second writer once Morpheus gets involved。 A well done dark story。 (4/5)In “A Dream of a Thousand Cats,” a group of cats meet in a graveyard to hear another cat tell a story about how dreams shape the world。 This was a fun story where cats have their own mythology。 (4/5)The first two stories have pencils by Kelly Jones and inks Malcolm Jones III。 The art fits both stories well, but I thought it was especially good in the second one。 “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” follows up on “Men of Good Fortune” from the previous volume where Morpheus met William Shakespeare。 In this story Morpheus has Shakespeare put on a special performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in a field in the countryside to an audience of fairy folk。 Shakespeare’s son is one of the actors。 The audience members include Queen Titania, King Oberon and Puck, who are characters from the play。 During the play the fairies comment on the performance and one of them causes some mischief。 The story is humorous but also bittersweet。 The fairy folk are about to leave our world and we see that Shakespeare’s work has taken a toll on his family life。 The art by Charles Vess is gorgeous。 Both the story and art are outstanding。 My favorite story in this collection。 (5/5)I love the line given by Morpheus after King Oberon comments that while the play is pleasant, it’s not true:“Things need not have happened to be true。 Tales and dreams are the shadow truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes, and forgot。“Facade” is the story of Urania Blackwell aka Element Girl, a former super hero with a grotesque appearance。 No longer needed by those in power, she lives off a small pension and leads a very lonely life。 She wants to die but her powers prevent her from doing so。 Death appears and offers her advice。 I liked the art by Colleen Doran and Malcolm Jones III。 The art shows both ugliness and beauty and the facial expressions help tell the story。 While I liked how the story comments on disabilities and identity I’m not sure how I feel about the ending。 (3/5)The script for “Calliope” is included at the end as a bonus。 Overall this was a nice mix of stories。 。。。more
