Summary

The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out in this chilling YA psychological thriller and modern take on the classic haunted house story from New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D。 Jackson!

Marigold is running from ghosts。 The phantoms of her old life keep haunting her, but a move with her newly blended family from their small California beach town to the embattled Midwestern city of Cedarville might be the fresh start she needs。 Her mom has accepted a new job with the Sterling Foundation that comes with a free house, one that Mari now has to share with her bratty ten-year-old stepsister, Piper。

The renovated picture-perfect home on Maple Street, sitting between dilapidated houses, surrounded by wary neighbors has its 。 。 。 secrets。 That’s only half the problem: household items vanish, doors open on their own, lights turn off, shadows walk past rooms, voices can be heard in the walls, and there’s a foul smell seeping through the vents only Mari seems to notice。 Worse: Piper keeps talking about a friend who wants Mari gone。

But “running from ghosts” is just a metaphor, right?

As the house closes in, Mari learns that the danger isn’t limited to Maple Street。 Cedarville has its secrets, too。 And secrets always find their way through the cracks。

Great audiobook。 Ending felt rushed and unfinished to me。 Loved the rest though!

Perfect book for the Halloween season! OMG this book was so scary and I did not see that ending coming! Tiffany D Jackson has done it again! Tiffany is an auto buy in my household! Very timely with the Big Ville scenario and with what is happening in our country。 Highly recommend!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ STARS!This was so good and so freaking terrifying。 I felt like the ending was a bit abrupt and there are some things about side characters I wish would have gotten resolved。 But all in all, this was a great read。

Ok, yup。 I got creeped out。 Bone-chilling read for sure and 100% perfect to read during spooky season。 This is my second Tiffany D。 Jackson book (I read GROWN a couple of months ago and LOVED it) and I absolutely cannot wait to read her other novels。 She has a reader for life in me。 Very much The Haunting of Hill House and Get Out vibes, so if those were ones you loved, then you’ll love WHITE SMOKE。 I love how Tiffany didn’t shy away from covering topics such as marijuana, anxiety, gentrificatio Ok, yup。 I got creeped out。 Bone-chilling read for sure and 100% perfect to read during spooky season。 This is my second Tiffany D。 Jackson book (I read GROWN a couple of months ago and LOVED it) and I absolutely cannot wait to read her other novels。 She has a reader for life in me。 Very much The Haunting of Hill House and Get Out vibes, so if those were ones you loved, then you’ll love WHITE SMOKE。 I love how Tiffany didn’t shy away from covering topics such as marijuana, anxiety, gentrification, overdose, rehab, and racism。 Also, the bed bugs。 Thanks。 Now I feel like I have stuff crawling all over me。If you get creeped out easily, I wouldn’t read this alone in your house nor would I read it at night。 I read most of it alone and I swore I saw figures and heard things。Absolutely loved Marigold, the main character, and her little brother。 As for the rest of the characters… they all annoyed me, but they were all very well written。 The ending threw me for a loop。 Is that really how it ended? I know there must be a sequel coming, RIGHT?! There has to be。 There just does。 Please!Highly recommend this book and highly recommend this author! She does not disappoint you whatsoever。 。。。more

This book was such an easy read。 Loved the writing and the dialogue, I could almost hear the characters' voices in my head。 This is a thrilling, fun book。 This is a fantastic pick for any read during the spooky season。 However, aside from the writing and the main twist (super intriguing) everything else pretty much fell flat for me。¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This book was such an easy read。 Loved the writing and the dialogue, I could almost hear the characters' voices in my head。 This is a thrilling, fun book。 This is a fantastic pick for any read during the spooky season。 However, aside from the writing and the main twist (super intriguing) everything else pretty much fell flat for me。¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 。。。more

Dude wtf。 I really thought for a majority of this book it was going to be a full 5 stars but the last 15% was just so disappointing。 I understand the message of this book but damn it could have gone so many different ways。

A great start into the horror/suspense genre。 I love Tiffany D。 Jackson because she does her stories justice to the real world。 She adds in social issues and gives her characters a voice about their state of being。 Marigold has anxiety, but the real situation about her sources of sorrow don't unfold until near the end in true Jackson fashion。 The characters in the household make you wonder who to trust and who to blame, it's a great mix of suspense and horror。 Add in gentrification, private pris A great start into the horror/suspense genre。 I love Tiffany D。 Jackson because she does her stories justice to the real world。 She adds in social issues and gives her characters a voice about their state of being。 Marigold has anxiety, but the real situation about her sources of sorrow don't unfold until near the end in true Jackson fashion。 The characters in the household make you wonder who to trust and who to blame, it's a great mix of suspense and horror。 Add in gentrification, private prison systems, the mafia, evangelicals and legalized cannabis as well as blocking the feeds of social media and you have a topical winner! I loved most of White Smoke。 It was a page-turner that had some genuinely creepy moments。 I also loved the familial angst and the social commentary。 So why four stars instead of five? Because of the ending。 It was way too abrupt。 So much that I was an actual shock when I turned the page and was faced with the acknowledgements。 The ending fizzled out and left a few things unresolved。 And from what I can see, White Smoke seems to be a stand-alone, so it really should've had a more concrete ending。 I loved most of White Smoke。 It was a page-turner that had some genuinely creepy moments。 I also loved the familial angst and the social commentary。 So why four stars instead of five? I don't read YA thrillers often as they are never quite what I want them to be and overall I have decided they aren't for me。 I had heard a lot of buzz about this book though, so I went in with high expectations。 I thought it was a good thriller/horror book and it was probably the best in this genre that I have read。 I ended up giving this 4。25/5 stars (rounded down to 4/5 stars)! I really enjoyed this one especially as it really started picking up around the 40% mark。 It was just scary enough for spooky season without keeping you up all night checking for ghosts。 I like that our main character, Mari, is flawed。 She has her own figurative ghosts and issues to work out。 I have seen several reviews say that the ending was abrupt and there was no true closure。 I would completely agree。 Other than that unsatisfying ending, this book was really interesting。

THIS WAS SO DAMN FUN OMG。With hints of Twilight Zone’s “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”, social commentary on The War On Drugs, and the 90s horror film, The People Under the Stairs - this was absolutely PERFECT for spooky season。

I was frantically flipping forward at the end of this--sure that it couldn't just end where it did。 And yet。 Jackson had me right where she wanted me as a reader in this。 Even as I knew I was being emotionally manipulated, and she would complicate characters and plot points later on, I was 100% along for the ride。 This was particularly true in terms of Mari's stepsister Piper。 Listen, I'm not proud of how I felt as a reader toward this 10-year-old girl for most of the book, knowing it was more c I was frantically flipping forward at the end of this--sure that it couldn't just end where it did。 And yet。 Jackson had me right where she wanted me as a reader in this。 Even as I knew I was being emotionally manipulated, and she would complicate characters and plot points later on, I was 100% along for the ride。 This was particularly true in terms of Mari's stepsister Piper。 Listen, I'm not proud of how I felt as a reader toward this 10-year-old girl for most of the book, knowing it was more complicated, but I also know as a reader that's what Jackson wanted me to struggle with。 Mari as a narrator was great because, like in a lot of horror we have reason to question her as a narrator--as do those in her life--even as we can be reasonably sure she's telling the truth。 And, she grows significantly as a character over the course of the book。 In many ways we are seeing her healing。I will say the one thing that threw me and felt a little out of place narratively was the preface。 I can also see what it's doing but I'm not sure it and the way the scares operated fit within the expectations of a reader going in to be able to look back on it after the end and go "oohhhhhhh。" I don't know I'm articulating that well, and it was a small thing。 This was spooky but also modernized-- looking at the impact of deindustrialization and the war on drugs and mass incarcerations impact on communities and corporate greed and also the corruption in small (-ish this community was still bigger than the one I grew up in)。 And, like with the world around us, safety is more complicated than escaping the haunted house at the end。 (Do other Midwestern communities categorize ginger ale as pop? It has always existed in its own separate category for me so seeing pop pretty much exclusively be ginger ale in this threw me slightly。) 。。。more

I could not put this down! I was terrified & had to keep going。 Jackson did an amazing job at giving us a fresh take for ya horror。 Threading institutionalized racism through it in a subtle way that just amps the suspense。
