Summary

This winning debut picture book from Mexican artist Flavia Z。 Drago about finding the courage to make friends is perfect for the spooky season — or anytime。

Gustavo is good at doing all sorts of ghostly things: walking through walls, making objects fly, and glowing in the dark。 And he loves almost nothing more than playing beautiful music on his violin。 But Gustavo is shy, and some things are harder for him to do, like getting in a line to buy eye scream or making friends with other monsters。 Whenever he tries getting close to them, he realizes they just can’t see him。 Now that the Day of the Dead is fast approaching, what can he do to make them notice him and to share with them something he loves? With fancifully detailed artwork and visual humor, debut picture-book creator Flavia Z。 Drago’s vivid illustrations tell a sweet and gently offbeat story of loneliness, bravery, and friendship that is sure to be a treat for little ghouls and goblins everywhere。

THIS IS THE BOOK CHILDREN NEED TO KNOW BEING SHY IS OKAY! Wow。 This is wonderful。 I love how Gustavo didn't have to change himself to be brave and make friends, and I love that his friends accepted him exactly as he is。 "From that moment on, Gustavo's life changed。 And everyone discovered that even if he didn't talk much。。。 he was the best at helping and protecting his friends。 But mostly, Gustavo never stopped surprising them。 And they never stopped loving him。"YES PLEASE。 MORE OF THIS。 THIS IS THE BOOK CHILDREN NEED TO KNOW BEING SHY IS OKAY! Uhh this was the cutest, and I cannot wait to read it to the Pre-k through Second graders I do virtual outreach for。 Loved the story, and the illustrations that were softly spooky。

Gustavo the ghost is shy。 It doesn't help that, being a ghost, people can see right through him。 Gustavo longs for friends, but his true passion is playing the violin。 He decides to have a concert and invite lots of other children in the neighborhood (depicted in the drawings as tiny versions of classic monsters like the Invisible Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon) to hear him play at a concert in the cemetery。 When no one shows up, Gustavo is sad, so he decides to play his violin anywa Gustavo the ghost is shy。 It doesn't help that, being a ghost, people can see right through him。 Gustavo longs for friends, but his true passion is playing the violin。 He decides to have a concert and invite lots of other children in the neighborhood (depicted in the drawings as tiny versions of classic monsters like the Invisible Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon) to hear him play at a concert in the cemetery。 When no one shows up, Gustavo is sad, so he decides to play his violin anyway to cheer himself up, but an amazing thing happens when Gustavo plays - he begins to glow。 Lost along the way, the other children see Gustavo's glow and, following it and his beautiful music, they finally find him and, getting to know the shy ghost, become his friends。 Gustavo, the Shy Ghost is a sweet tale that will resonate with shy children。 It is also perfect for the Halloween season, and it also references Day of the Dead, denoting a connection with Hispanic tradition。 Children will have fun finding Gustavo in the illustrations, particularly the drawings where he takes the shape of everyday objects like balloons or a lamp, making him "invisible" to the other children。 。。。more

The art in this book is what really makes it shine: I think it is a contender for the Caldecott award next year! Your 5-8 year old will love the friendship and self-discovery story for its brilliant graphics and message。

I found this book by accident and sat down to read it at the end of a long day for me。 In the end, I really liked this book, it was super cute, and the art was just so colorful and fun。 As a future teacher, I could see myself using this book when talking about courage to students or as a fun read-aloud for students near Halloween time。 In this story Gustavo had to be brave to make friends, this is because he wanted to have friends to hang out with and he was so shy he wasn't successful in the pa I found this book by accident and sat down to read it at the end of a long day for me。 In the end, I really liked this book, it was super cute, and the art was just so colorful and fun。 As a future teacher, I could see myself using this book when talking about courage to students or as a fun read-aloud for students near Halloween time。 In this story Gustavo had to be brave to make friends, this is because he wanted to have friends to hang out with and he was so shy he wasn't successful in the past at making friends。 I am sure that many kids will be able to relate to Gustavo, and for those who don't, it is still a cute story。 We also see a little bit of a different culture than just the typical American culture in this book when they mention the Day of the dead。 This might be a good way to also bring up a conversation with students about what is the day of the dead。 。。。more

This book was nothing short of awesome。 It has such fabulous Day of the Dead vibes, a really heartwarming message and brilliant illustrations - full-page, colourful and fun illustrations! The story is quite simple - Gustavo the ghost is painfully shy, but he quite likes a pretty ghost in the town so decides to try and use his true talent, playing the violin, in the hopes to make friends (indirectly)。 I loved that the author has used such a bold and colourful spread to talk about shyness and to en This book was nothing short of awesome。 It has such fabulous Day of the Dead vibes, a really heartwarming message and brilliant illustrations - full-page, colourful and fun illustrations! The story is quite simple - Gustavo the ghost is painfully shy, but he quite likes a pretty ghost in the town so decides to try and use his true talent, playing the violin, in the hopes to make friends (indirectly)。 I loved that the author has used such a bold and colourful spread to talk about shyness and to encourage children to try and push past that feeling to make friends。 Let's be real, making friends is hard! And wouldn't we all like to hide behind a hidden talent to make new ones?I thought this had so much heart。 I wouldn't hesitate to share more of this author's work with my children。ARC provided from the publishers in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Themes of shyness and making friends。 Great for a storytime around Halloween without explicitly being Halloween。 Diverse: Nothing is explicitly diverse, but the abundance of sugar skull decorations and papel picado indicate Latinx cultural influence。

A heartwarming story about how friendship is not just a one-way street。 Gustavo the ghost is afraid to take the first step to make friends, instead sits on the sidelines and observes all the other monsters having fun and enjoying a variety of things。 He decides, eventually, to be brave and do something he loves: put on a violin concert and invite ALL the monsters to join。 In the end, it turns out the monsters are there to hear from Gustavo and want to be his friend too。 It's nice that Gustavo do A heartwarming story about how friendship is not just a one-way street。 Gustavo the ghost is afraid to take the first step to make friends, instead sits on the sidelines and observes all the other monsters having fun and enjoying a variety of things。 He decides, eventually, to be brave and do something he loves: put on a violin concert and invite ALL the monsters to join。 In the end, it turns out the monsters are there to hear from Gustavo and want to be his friend too。 It's nice that Gustavo doesn't really have to do anything to prove himself; rather, the other monsters are ready and available to have a new friend。 Of course they enjoy Gustavo and his music, but the friendship itself is just there。 The emotional tone of this book is spot on -- who knew we could be so empathetic towards a simple little ghost?! It's too sweet。The fact that this is ghost and monster themed makes this book a fantastic October read, but really the vibrancy of the illustrations and overall message and tone of the book makes for a read aloud any time of the year。 ***Note: I was given a review copy of this book by Candlewick Press。 Opinions are my own。 。。。more

The illustration in this book is amazing。 It has so many details and the more you read it the more things you can find。 It is also a good halloween time book to read aloud to students。 It also discusses feelings that many children can relate to and not understand how to process like being shy and nervous。 They talk about how he loves music and how he is terrified to make friends。 I feel like those are two things children could understand and maybe relate to。 It also talks about the day of the de The illustration in this book is amazing。 It has so many details and the more you read it the more things you can find。 It is also a good halloween time book to read aloud to students。 It also discusses feelings that many children can relate to and not understand how to process like being shy and nervous。 They talk about how he loves music and how he is terrified to make friends。 I feel like those are two things children could understand and maybe relate to。 It also talks about the day of the dead which is a Mexican holiday so it can include other students cultures or introduce one to students。 。。。more

This book is super cute, and even better, it doesn't shy away from the "spooky" nature of its characters。 A lot of children's books/media will use something scary--like ghosts or pirates--because they are popular images。 But the lessons they teach then contradict the nature of their spooky denizens。 Not so here。 Gustavo and all of his (would-be) spooky friends are still spooky--even when the story is cute and sweet。 This book is super cute, and even better, it doesn't shy away from the "spooky" nature of its characters。 A lot of children's books/media will use something scary--like ghosts or pirates--because they are popular images。 But the lessons they teach then contradict the nature of their spooky denizens。 Not so here。 Gustavo and all of his (would-be) spooky friends are still spooky--even when the story is cute and sweet。 。。。more
