Summary

Although serial killers are usually male, they are not exclusively so, as Tori Telfer shows in this fast paced, somewhat light hearted look at fourteen female serial killers through the ages, including analyzing the media response and sexists clichés that surround them。

maybe it’s my childhood spent watching criminal minds warping my brain into adulthood, but i found this really cool。 i mean, poison and dead husbands, what’s not to love?

This is the authors first book and it showed。 This is a collection of 14 short stories of female serial killers。 All take place over 100 years ago, except for one。 I enjoyed several of the chapters, but mostly a boring read。 I would pass。 Maybe just not a subject for me。

3。5 stars。 I really enjoyed reading Tori Telfer’s newest work, Confident Women, earlier this year so I was happy to get my hands on her first work。Lady Killers was an interesting read with each chapter containing a case study following one female serial killer from the past。 Pretty much all of the female serial killers Telfer talks about in this book are pre-1950s which I think was a negative point of the book because for most of these cases she was required to fall back on anecdotal evidence an 3。5 stars。 I really enjoyed reading Tori Telfer’s newest work, Confident Women, earlier this year so I was happy to get my hands on her first work。Lady Killers was an interesting read with each chapter containing a case study following one female serial killer from the past。 Pretty much all of the female serial killers Telfer talks about in this book are pre-1950s which I think was a negative point of the book because for most of these cases she was required to fall back on anecdotal evidence and incomplete records。 This meant that a lot of the information about these women was unconfirmed including a lot of their kill counts (which is kind of expected for a lot of the earliest cases)。One thing I really enjoy about Telfer’s work in general is how well she contextualizes these women within their time period。 Due to a lot of the examples in this book being historical Telfer focuses on the cultural climate each of each time period to explain why exactly the existence of a female serial killer was so decisive。 For example, when talking about Kate Bender who reigned during the frontier years Telfer talks about how Kate used the concept of home to lure weary travelers to their death。 She also goes into how ageism, sexuality and insanity affected the perception of these women。I do think that this book is worth the read。 Although compared to Telfer’s newer work the variety of women discussed in this book is limited and it’s clear that Telfer was still developing her narrative voice。 。。。more

I love reading about murder, I'm just one of those people and no I'm not sorry about it。 But after the first two or three, I got really bored。 The writing was fine, it was just a lot of 'she was a rich aristocrat who tortured and killed her servants, till they finally caught her and she went to trial' or 'she was poor and spent her life in a cycle of marriage and then murdering her husbands till they finally caught her and she went to trial' and only a few of those stories are actually interesti I love reading about murder, I'm just one of those people and no I'm not sorry about it。 But after the first two or three, I got really bored。 The writing was fine, it was just a lot of 'she was a rich aristocrat who tortured and killed her servants, till they finally caught her and she went to trial' or 'she was poor and spent her life in a cycle of marriage and then murdering her husbands till they finally caught her and she went to trial' and only a few of those stories are actually interesting。 I needed something changed up, I needed some psychological analysis, I needed a few of them to be less than 100 years ago。 I get it, women murder, and I already know Aileen Wuornos was so not the first female serial killer in America。。。but give me some creativity。 Lots of history, lots of arsenic, not lots of interesting information though。 If you're faint of heart but still want murder stories, this is for you。 If you spend your time listening to podcasts about heinous crimes, this book will put you to sleep。 。。。more

2。75 stars - This book was a book club selection and one that I was so excited to get to。 Sadly, in my mind, it did not live up to the hype。 It was fine as far as the book goes。 There were parts I enjoyed, but a good portion of the book was a bit of a slough for me。 I have always been fascinated by true crime and serial killers (thank you grandma), so I was definitely interested in this book since as the book states, you don't hear an awful lot about female serial killers, mainly because they ar 2。75 stars - This book was a book club selection and one that I was so excited to get to。 Sadly, in my mind, it did not live up to the hype。 It was fine as far as the book goes。 There were parts I enjoyed, but a good portion of the book was a bit of a slough for me。 I have always been fascinated by true crime and serial killers (thank you grandma), so I was definitely interested in this book since as the book states, you don't hear an awful lot about female serial killers, mainly because they are definitely outnumbered by their male counterparts and, honestly, maybe there just weren't that many to begin with。 The book started out promising。 She bought out the big gun, Erzsebet Bathory (more commonly known in these modern times as Elizabeth Bathory The Blood Countess) and she is someone I have always been fascinated by, not by her crimes per se, but by the fact and the fiction surrounding her story。 But then the book continues with a spate of women who basically killed their husbands and children by poisoning them, most commonly with arsenic, usually due to money or they needed their husbands or children out of the way so they could run off with their next victims, which was interesting the first couple of times I read that, but I would argue 90% of the book ended up being about these women who poisoned and it just got a bit repetitive。 In some of the stories you probably could have changed the names of the people and I wouldn't have known the difference。 I do understand that the author was probably working with very limited information and was trying to write the most factual book she thought possible, she probably could have made this into an entirely different book called Poisoner Women - Deadly Women Who Poisoned Throughout History for Love and Profit。 The writing was good and of course, the premise is amazing, but sadly, this book was just okay for me。 This is not to say there weren't a couple of interesting stories in the book besides the Bathory one。 A couple of names stood out that I feel would be interesting to find out more about, but overall I was not as excited to get through this book as I was when I first heard about it。 。。。more

Interesting journey through women killers throughout history

Julia Andrade

The women in this book are cruel, heartless and violent, they kill their parents, their children, anyone who gets in their way。 Although these women are notoriously evil, Tori’s writing made me empathise with their situations, all of them born in a time where women had no control over their lives or their futures, some of them did what they had to to survive。 Others were just straight up murderers。3。5 /just because/ I'm a huge true crime fan so most of the stories in the book I already knew。Ps: The women in this book are cruel, heartless and violent, they kill their parents, their children, anyone who gets in their way。 Although these women are notoriously evil, Tori’s writing made me empathise with their situations, all of them born in a time where women had no control over their lives or their futures, some of them did what they had to to survive。 Others were just straight up murderers。3。5 /just because/ I'm a huge true crime fan so most of the stories in the book I already knew。Ps: if a woman offers you soup, don't eat it。 。。。more

DNF。。。tired of reading about killers from 1000 years ago。 Boring!

A very quick and easy read (read this in about a day)。 This book provides the basic overview of these infamous Lady Killers。 It does shed light as to possible reasons why these women eventually became killers。

Ana Lydia

PERFEITO!!!!!

Really enjoyed this book。 The research that went into creating it was amazing, so much detail。 Such an interesting read。 The layout of each story was captivating。 Really really loved this book。 Hoping the author will write some more similar books about other crimes。

I liked it。 I didn’t love it, largely because, as other folks have stated here, the specifics of many of the stories aren’t available to the writer or thus, the reader。 I appreciated learning about notorious women I’ve never heard of, spanning the globe no less。 I thought the writer was thoughtful in handling the subject matter, calling out problematic tropes, and writing in a way that kept the reader engaged。 I’d recommend, but almost put it in the category of a beach read- nothing wrong with a I liked it。 I didn’t love it, largely because, as other folks have stated here, the specifics of many of the stories aren’t available to the writer or thus, the reader。 I appreciated learning about notorious women I’ve never heard of, spanning the globe no less。 I thought the writer was thoughtful in handling the subject matter, calling out problematic tropes, and writing in a way that kept the reader engaged。 I’d recommend, but almost put it in the category of a beach read- nothing wrong with a beach read, but if you’re looking for something a little heavier or academic this isn’t it。 。。。more

I liked this book。 I enjoyed the tone, often sarcastic, because it didn’t take itself to seriously without detracting from the horror of the subject matter。 I came for the stories, which turned out to be as engaging as expected。 Telfer unpacks quite a bit of nuance in each story, but in the end it felt like something was missing。 Manipulation of gender and class structures are central themes in the book but race is only mentioned in the cases of the Egyptian and Moroccan murderesses。 It does a d I liked this book。 I enjoyed the tone, often sarcastic, because it didn’t take itself to seriously without detracting from the horror of the subject matter。 I came for the stories, which turned out to be as engaging as expected。 Telfer unpacks quite a bit of nuance in each story, but in the end it felt like something was missing。 Manipulation of gender and class structures are central themes in the book but race is only mentioned in the cases of the Egyptian and Moroccan murderesses。 It does a disservice to ignore the significance of whiteness and ideas about white femininity, especially in the American cases of the 20th century。 Part of that comes down to lack of resources and information, as Telfer mentions in the conclusion。 Little survives about the non-white female serial killers in comparison。 All in all, I thought the book was well written and engaging。 4 stars 。。。more

I picked up this book because I loved the podcast “Criminal Broads。”Telfer’s storytelling ability is great, but it’s better in podcast format。 I’m not sure if I was just underwhelmed or if I was expecting the detail in 30 minute-long podcast episodes。Not a terrible book, just wasn’t what I was expecting。
